After Turning Into a Kitten, I Was Adopted by My Father-Figure Childhood Friend - Chapter 33
Deny, Deny, Deny
“Like? Like him? What are you talking about?”
The tips of his mismatched ears flushed a thin, sunset pink at those words. Cat Song stiffened his neck and barked out an exceptionally loud denunciation. “I do not like Little Lu at all!”
The group of cats replied in unison, “Meow.”
“Really!”
“Meow meow.”
“I hate him the most!”
As the clarifications grew increasingly urgent, loud, and high-pitched, Da Fu shook his ears in annoyance. He drew out his voice nonchalantly. “The cat hears you.”
Tsk. What a stubborn little You-Meow.
A hint of a smile flickered in the tabby cat’s eyes as if he had shrewdly seen through everything. Amidst Cat Song’s mindless, flustered meowing, Da Fu narrowed his eyes and flicked his tail dismissively. “Alright, alright. Stop.”
“Now, let us first discuss the matter of Blueberry!”
Song Xingyu had a thousand reasons to hate Lu Jingchuan. They were so numerous he could rattle them off without thinking. For instance, Lu Jingchuan was a boring science student who did not understand him at all and only followed him around like a mute. Or, just because he disappeared for a few days, that serious guy was so worried he wanted to call the police. Or, he was a total jerk who cried over nothing; clearly, it was Song Xingyu’s own business, yet Lu Jingchuan ended up sadder than he was.
Cat Song’s fur puffed out into a ball. His two paws scraped restlessly against the ground before he instinctively retracted them, his little mouth muttering under his breath. He pressed his tail, now a large, fluffy strip, under his paws and stepped on it anxiously, kneading it like dough. Fearing the other cats would not realize just how annoying Lu Jingchuan was, Cat Song’s eyes darted around rapidly. He spoke with desperate haste.
“In short, Little Lu is a jerk! Blueberry’s owner would never like him!”
The little calico made his announcement fervently, his amber-gold eyes sparkling with a bright, cunning light. He looked full of anticipation, only for his soft little face to be suddenly nuzzled from the side.
Cat Song jumped in surprise. He instinctively tried to hide, only to be nuzzled by another cat from the other side. The cats smelled like warm kittens, that cozy, sun-baked scent. The little calico was sandwiched between two cats, their long tails draped affectionately over him as they licked and nuzzled him dearly.
“Little Meow.” Xiao Bai licked the fur on the kitten’s head and gave the tip of his ear a gentle nip, humming softly. “We know, we know. We will not touch your human.”
Such a cute kitty.
Nuomi the tortoiseshell cat squinted her eyes with a smile, clearly amused by little You-Meow. She expressed her doting support. “We will find another male human for Blueberry.”
Cat Song instantly became excited. Feeling that the other cats finally recognized Lu Jingchuan’s annoyances, he puffed out his chest and thought triumphantly. As expected, his judgment of people is the most accurate.
Hmph. Little Lu’s reputation for being annoying has already spread through the cat world. He will not have any kittens to pet from now on!
“Meow meow!” He pricked up his tail, which was then sweetly entangled by the tails of the other two cats. He was completely oblivious, making a sweet promise. “I will find a good man for Blueberry!”
The quiet and conformist Da Fa asked blankly, “Where is the cat going to find one?”
That was an excellent question. Cat Song immediately narrowed his eyes and pressed a paw seriously to his chin, assuming a deeply thoughtful expression. To introduce someone, they had to be handsome and have a good character.
If he were human right now, finding a couple of rich second-generation friends as options would not be out of the question. Those friends might not have much talent, but they had plenty of money and loved to relax. Anyone he considered a friend had no bad habits; at most, they loved art, and with a bit of tidying up, they looked respectable enough to match a nice young lady.
But now he was a cat, a cat struggling to communicate with that annoying jerk Little Lu using tiny paws. Thinking about how Lu Jingchuan had been messaging him all morning through that music app, Cat Song scratched his ear in frustration. He had not yet figured out how to reply with cat paws, let alone how to turn back into a human.
Suddenly, he had a flash of inspiration. His gaze swept over the crowd of cats. “Are your owners male or female? Are any of them single?”
They were all in the same district, so their family backgrounds should be similar. That would be a great choice. The cats looked at one another. Da Fu narrowed his eyes, a glint of wisdom flashing within them. “The Boss!”
“The Boss’s human is a male. I often see him taking the Boss out for runs. The Boss runs faster than the human!”
Speaking of the Maine Coon leader, that semi-trailer of a cat named Alpha, Da Fu spilled everything like beans from a jar. “But the Boss does not know about this yet. He has to patrol the territory every day. Usually, if the cats have business, they come to me and Nuomi first.”
At this, Da Fu lifted his tail proudly, wagging it back and forth. Clearly, even though he was not the leader, this division of labor made him feel very good, and he worked at it with great enthusiasm.
The Search for the “Good Man”
Cat Song followed the group of cats as they leaped onto a wall, walking one after another along the ledge in a line of little cat steps. This villa district consisted of row houses, all two or three stories high. Because it was near the city center, each villa was roughly two to three hundred square meters with small front and back yards.
Song Xingyu had previously complained that Lu Jingchuan refused to stay in the large Lu family mansion and moved out the day he returned to the country. He had not realized this place was so close to the Lu family’s company. Since Lu Jingchuan started working, he had not missed his morning runs. When the weather was good, he even rode his mountain bike to work and back. Upon returning, he would not stop, taking Cat Song out for a nightly run every day.
Song Xingyu used to be a fragile college student, but now he was a self-disciplined kitten with a sleek, strong physique. He jumped easily from one house’s wall to the next, pricking up his ears and poking his head out to listen to Da Fu at the front of the line.
The cat squad was ordered by combat strength. Cat Song, the weakest, was in the middle, preceded by Xiao Bai and Da Fu, and followed by Nuomi and Da Fa. Staring at Xiao Bai’s furry backside, Cat Song grew curious. He trotted forward to cut in front of Xiao Bai. “Fu-Meow, Fu-Meow, what about your human? Is it a kind young lady?”
Da Fu snorted, sounding very proud of his human. “My human was picked up from the riverbank by a cat. He was fishing by the river. The cat watched for a long time until I got sleepy. Seeing that he could not catch a single fish after half a day, the cat shared half of mine with him. He was so grateful he took the cat home immediately.”
Da Fa’s muffled voice came from behind. “Human is good. Cat was not good; cat was unwell. Human helped cat get better.”
Wait? So Da Fu did not scout out a human to trick? It sounded like the classic script of a failed fisherman who finds an injured kitten and takes it home for patient care. Kitties sure knew how to embellish their stories.
Cat Song flicked his ears and a mysterious smile played on his lips. He nuzzled Da Fu affectionately. “Meow is good, human is good.”
Da Fu proudly twitched his whiskers. “Of course! The cat’s human is very good, and the human’s female is also very good.”
Oh. He has a wife and likes fishing. Sounds like a middle-aged doctor.
Cat Song seriously crossed Da Fu’s human off the list of candidates. The line of cats marched like a train along the villa paths, moving from Villa 501 to Villa 305. They sat in a polite row on the wall, peering into the villa while Da Fu jumped into the yard to announce their arrival.
Compared to Lu Jingchuan’s villa, which looked like a model home, the Maine Coon leader’s villa was cluttered with various items. Cat Song’s sharp eyes scanned the area, seeing everything from sneakers on the floor to Gundam models on the shelves. It looks like a human with many hobbies!
As Cat Song was evaluating, a shadow suddenly rushed out. It was a blur of movement as a semi-trailer of a cat zoomed up the wall, stopping abruptly right in front of them. It nearly knocked the cat squad off the ledge. Alpha’s sharp gaze swept over the scattered cats. His beautiful silver-black fur made him look like a majestic little tiger. He sat regally on the wall, his gaze naturally landing on the stunned kitten who had forgotten to run. His voice was incredibly deep. “Looking for me?”
“Boss!” Da Fu scrambled up and meowed the situation to the Maine Coon. Alpha lowered his head and pushed Da Fu back with an unceremonious paw to the head. “No.”
Having been rejected repeatedly, Da Fu grew annoyed. “Why? The Boss’s human clearly does not have a partner!”
The Maine Coon went silent for a moment. “The Boss, he likes male humans.”
His human was busy pursuing men and would not choose a female human. The group of cats scattered under the Boss’s authority. Alpha came and went like a whirlwind, moving with the speed of a charging tiger. He did not say another word, walking with a majestic stride that left Cat Song utterly entranced. Song Xingyu stared blankly at the impressive lynx tips on Alpha’s ears. They fluttered in the wind. So cool! I want to be that cool in the future!
The Encounter
“Stop staring, You-Meow!” Da Fu was very unhappy. His ears slumped, and he sat down beside the little calico, wagging his tail irritably. “Hurry up and think of something!”
The Boss’s human liked men, the second-in-command’s human was old, and Xiao Bai and Nuomi’s humans were both female. Cat Song scratched his ear and meowed while hugging his tail. “Then let me think a bit more.”
At worst, he could introduce a boyfriend to Blueberry’s owner after he turned back into a human. As he was meowing to comfort Da Fu, he suddenly felt a chill down his spine. An unknown sense of crisis, like an electric current, numbed his tail and surged into his brain. He shuddered all over. Feeling as though he were being watched by something dangerous, he looked around instinctively.
Meow? Does it feel like someone is plotting against a cat?
“Over here.”
A low voice sounded from behind him. “You-You, are you planning to run away from home?”
The sensation of suddenly being called by name was like being abruptly pulled into someone’s personal space, dragged into an inseparable boundary without warning. Song Xingyu’s ears pricked up. He turned his head in disbelief.
Da Fu, who had been holding his head in his paws, jumped in surprise. His ears shot up as he sensed the danger. His fur stood on end, and he bared his teeth, hissing a warning behind him.
“Meow uuu!”
Danger!
