- Chapter 51 - Familiarity (Familiar)
Li Zhiyun was too reckless.
Outside the ward.
Tonight’s accident was major, and many police officers had arrived and were questioning the tourists who were present one by one.
However, there were two wards they did not dare to enter easily.
One of them was Li Zhiyun’s.
Wen Zhu sat by the hospital bed, her eyes fixed on Li Zhiyun’s left arm, which was completely wrapped in gauze, and her eyes started to turn red again.
She never thought of herself as someone who panicked easily.
But tonight, she didn’t know why, the thought that Li Zhiyun was in this state because she saved her, a sense of indescribable panic clutched her heart.
Li Zhiyun was lucky tonight.
What if… what if the fragments of that chandelier had scattered a little more?
Wouldn’t it have hit her back, or her spine?
The more Wen Zhu thought about it, the more scared she became, and even the hand holding Li Zhiyun’s began to tremble uncontrollably.
Li Zhiyun felt her shivering and, with her uninjured right hand, held hers back.
Her palm was dry and warm, carrying a calming strength.
“Don’t be afraid, I’m fine.” Her voice was still a little weak, but steady.
Wen Zhu bit her lower lip, and it took a while before she forcibly swallowed the surging tears.
“Next time something like this happens, you don’t have to worry about me.” Her voice was hoarse. “I have a lot of luck. When I was little, I went on a spring outing with my classmates. Several people fell into the ravine, but I was fine. I have very good luck…”
“If I could, I would rather be the one lying here than”
Before she finished speaking, Li Zhiyun raised her right hand and gently sealed her lips with her index finger.
Her lips were a little pale, making her face look even thinner.
“Saving you was my voluntary choice.”
The beautiful eyes looked at her, and the corners of her lips curved slightly.
“I don’t want you to feel bad about it. If you really feel guilty…”
Li Zhiyun paused, “Then comb my hair for me.”
The fingertip pressed against her lips had a cool, soft touch, and Wen Zhu’s breathing stopped for half a beat.
She followed Li Zhiyun’s gaze and then noticed that her originally dark and smooth long hair was now covered in dust and wood chips, and many sections were tangled together.
Wen Zhu’s heart felt as if it had been pricked by a needle, hurting even more.
For someone as particular about cleanliness as Li Zhiyun, she must be very uncomfortable right now.
Seeing that Wen Zhu didn’t speak for a long time, Li Zhiyun thought she was unwilling, and her eyelashes slowly lowered.
“I want to comb it myself too, but my right hand isn’t very comfortable right now either.”
Her voice was low. “If you don’t want to, I won’t force you…”
“I don’t mind!” Hearing this, Wen Zhu immediately snapped back and spoke quickly.
She looked at Li Zhiyun’s lowered eyes, her heart completely softened.
At this moment, let alone combing her hair, even if Li Zhiyun wanted the stars in the sky, she would be desperate to negotiate with the moon to pick them for her.
Wen Zhu softened her voice, coaxing her: “I’ll help you comb it.”
With that, she got up and went out, borrowed a clean comb from the nurses’ station, and then sat back down by Li Zhiyun’s pillow.
Li Zhiyun cooperated by sitting up straight and slightly turning her body, offering her back to Wen Zhu.
Wen Zhu held the comb, treating it like the most precious treasure in the world, carefully starting from the ends of her hair, gradually untangling it for her.
Li Zhiyun’s hair quality was excellent.
Aside from being natural, it showed the smoothness meticulously nurtured by money and time, like a black waterfall.
But now, this beautiful waterfall was covered with small stones and sharp wood chips.
Every stroke Wen Zhu combed made her heart tighten a bit more.
Her fingers were extremely gentle. Wen Zhu was afraid of hurting Li Zhiyun, so she could only use the most clumsy and patient method to pick out the small debris one by one from her hair.
Finally, when the last wood chip was removed, Wen Zhu breathed a sigh of relief.
She straightened up after carefully finishing and realized that she was too close to Li Zhiyun.
Bending over, she was practically enveloping Li Zhiyun from behind, so close that she could clearly smell the crisp and clean scent of pear blossoms on her.
Just as she was about to quietly step back, Li Zhiyun suddenly turned her head.
“Are you done?”
Her voice was very soft, and her warm breath landed on Wen Zhu’s cheek.
The distance between the two was instantly compressed to less than a fist’s width.
They were so close that their breaths mingled.
Wen Zhu completely froze, her mind blank, momentarily forgetting to dodge.
Li Zhiyun also seemed not to have expected them to be so close when she turned her head, and she paused slightly.
The air seemed to solidify.
The two looked at each other like this, neither moving.
Until Li Zhiyun lowered her eyes, her gaze sliding from Wen Zhu’s panicked eyes, over her upturned nose, and finally, resting on her lips.
She was inherently aloof; when she looked down, her long eyelashes cast a small shadow beneath her eyes, obscuring the emotions in her eyes, yet adding a sense of condescending scrutiny.
Wen Zhu felt her legs go weak and almost knelt down right there.
She finally came to her senses, almost hastily retreating from behind Li Zhiyun, stuttering as she spoke.
“It’s… it’s done. Are you thirsty?” Wen Zhu didn’t wait for Li Zhiyun’s reply, grabbing the bedside water bottle in a panic, “I’ll go get you some hot water!”
With that, she fled the ward without looking back.
With a “bang,” the door closed. Wen Zhu walked down the corridor, her mind filled with the scene just now.
Why did Li Zhiyun suddenly stare at her lips?
Was she… was she trying to seduce herself?
As soon as this thought popped up, Wen Zhu felt like she was going crazy.
That was Li Zhiyun!
The cold, distant, and untainted Li Zhiyun!
Wen Zhu felt that thinking this way was simply desecrating a deity, desecrating her savior!
She slapped her hot cheeks hard, forcing herself to calm down, and headed toward the utility room for water.
The corridor was quieter than before. As she passed an office, Wen Zhu glanced casually.
A woman in a police superintendent uniform stood by the desk, her face full of difficulty.
And sitting opposite her was Li Zhishu.
“Miss Li, the result of our current investigation is that it was an accident.”
The female superintendent’s voice held a plea. “That room was a wooden cabin. The chandelier was hung by a rope and secured to the ground with a wooden stake. The stake was buried deep, and no one expected that the artificial snow this evening was too heavy. When the wind blew, the foundation softened, causing the stake to loosen and pull out.”
“The ski resort has admitted it was a safety oversight on their part and has decided to take full responsibility, only hoping you can be magnanimous.”
The female superintendent was also having a massive headache.
The eldest daughters of the Pei and Li families, plus a popular female celebrity, a bunch of people she couldn’t afford to offend, had an accident here, along with many injured ordinary citizens.
If this wasn’t handled well, let alone public opinion, the pressure from above would be enough to cause her trouble.
But she couldn’t help it, all the evidence clearly pointed to this being an unfortunate accident.
Li Zhishu’s face was cold, and her voice carried no warmth. “What about the surveillance footage?”
Her presence was intimidating; even sitting down, she exuded a strong sense of oppression.
The female superintendent wiped the sweat from her forehead. “Miss Li, that area faces the restroom. To protect the tourists’ privacy, no surveillance was installed. We checked the corridor footage, but with people coming and going, we didn’t capture anyone suspicious.”
Li Zhishu frowned tightly, about to say something more, when the corner of her eye caught sight of Wen Zhu carrying a water bottle at the door.
Seeing Wen Zhu, the intimidating aura around her suddenly receded, even showing a hint of a smile as she waved at her.
“Little Wen Zhu, why did you come over? How is Zhiyun now?”
“I came to get some hot water,” Wen Zhu said. “She’s doing quite well now.”
“Thank you for your trouble,” Li Zhishu’s tone was as gentle as if she had become a different person.
She turned back and looked at the female superintendent again. “Keep investigating.”
Her expression, however, softened quite a bit compared to before. “Even without surveillance, there will always be traces left at the scene. The answer ‘accident’ is not satisfactory to me.”
She paused, her gaze sharply fixed on the other party. “If the superintendent can’t handle it, I can find someone else. I trust the superintendent won’t disappoint me, right?”
The female superintendent was drenched in sweat under her pressure, nodding repeatedly. “Rest assured, we will continue to investigate! We will definitely get to the bottom of this!”
Only after receiving this assurance did Li Zhishu let her leave.
Zang Ying had urgent business at the club and had already said goodbye and left.
Li Zhishu followed Wen Zhu back to the ward.
When she heard Li Zhishu relay the police investigation result as “accident,” Li Zhiyun, lying on the hospital bed, narrowed her eyes almost imperceptibly.
Clearly, she didn’t believe it either.
“Don’t overthink things, focus on recovering,” Li Zhishu said, not wanting her to worry. “I will look into the rest of the matter.”
After saying that, she looked at Wen Zhu. “I will be very busy these next few days. Little Zhu, I’ll have to trouble you to take good care of Zhiyun during her hospitalization.”
“I will,” Wen Zhu nodded immediately.
Wen Zhu walked Li Zhishu out.
At the door, she hesitated and finally spoke, “Sister Li, do you really think… this was intentional?”
Li Zhishu raised an eyebrow and asked her in return, “Don’t you think so?”
“If Sister Zhishu trusts me,” Wen Zhu took a deep breath, as if making a decision, “you can look into Jiang Xinxin.”
Li Zhishu searched her mind for the name but found no impression of it.
She asked, “Who is that?”
“Pei Xiubai’s new love, the female celebrity who was also hospitalized because of the fallen chandelier.”
Wen Zhu spoke, her tone slightly hesitant. “This is just a guess of mine.”
She remembered that Jiang Xinxin had only returned from the restroom just before the awards ceremony.
In fact, she had wanted to mention it to the superintendent just now when she heard the camera was facing the restroom.
But she was afraid they would learn about her relationship with Pei Xiubai and Jiang Xinxin and think she was suffering from persecution paranoia.
As she spoke, Wen Zhu also felt that she sounded too much like someone informing on others behind their backs.
She looked into Li Zhishu’s eyes, saying every word with extra seriousness. “Sister Zhishu, I’m not saying this because I’m jealous of Jiang Xinxin and Pei Xiubai being together.”
She no longer had any expectations for Pei Xiubai.
But she had to find out. If Li Zhiyun was indeed injured because of Jiang Xinxin, then she was, in the end, the one who dragged Li Zhiyun down.
“This is just a guess. I have no evidence. If you don’t believe it, you don’t need to waste your energy to…”
“I believe you.” Li Zhishu patted her shoulder.
She looked at Wen Zhu’s somewhat bright eyes and suddenly understood why Li Zhiyun liked this girl so much.
Wen Zhu had an open and clean sincerity, true to her name, like a towering green bamboo after a fresh rain.
Being by her side felt like even the biggest temper would be soothed.
Li Zhishu’s tense shoulders relaxed, and she told Wen Zhu, “Don’t blame yourself. Tonight’s events have nothing to do with you.”
“I’ll find a caregiver to come over soon. Until the caregiver arrives, please stay with Zhiyun for a bit longer.”
After speaking, she turned and left.
As soon as Li Zhishu left, Wen Zhu returned to the ward.
Li Zhiyun was not lying down but sitting up against the headboard, looking out the window.
The moonlight was beautiful tonight.
The cool moonlight streamed through the glass window, falling on her profile, making her look even more unrealistically beautiful, as if she might melt into the moonlight at any moment.
Not long after, the caregiver arrived.
She was a very capable middle-aged aunt who immediately put away the toiletries and change of clothes she brought and then quickly attended to Li Zhiyun’s washing up.
After all this, the aunt noticed Wen Zhu still in the room, looking a little confused.
“Girl, aren’t you leaving?”
Wen Zhu shook her head. “I’m not leaving. I’m staying here tonight.”
Li Zhiyun was in a high-end single ward, which had a bed for the patient and a companion bed for family members.
She told the aunt, “I’ll stay with Miss Li tonight. You can come back tomorrow morning.”
The aunt subconsciously looked at Li Zhiyun on the bed, seeing that she didn’t object, she immediately nodded in agreement, a big smile spreading across her face.
“Alright, since you’re staying with Miss Li, I’ll head back then.”
The aunt said, quickly gathering her belongings. “I’ve done everything I need to do. You just need to help Miss Li change her clothes tonight.”
Wen Zhu was stunned.
