After Transmigrating to Become Lady Skylark - Chapter 62
Chapter 62
The entire conference room fell into a deathly silence.
Sawada Tsuna, sensing the terrifying consequences this question was about to trigger, began waving his hands frantically at Jin Chaoyan. However, Sasagawa Ryohei, as if suddenly reminded of something, chimed in with his booming voice, “Oh—! Hibari, so you really…”
Jin Chaoyan instantly activated her Sharingan. With a speed that even Dino couldn’t react to, she plucked an oyster from the box in front of him and tossed it across the air straight into Ryohei’s mouth, plugging the rest of his words before they could leave his unsuspecting throat. Immediately, she deactivated the Sharingan and turned to the youth in the hallway—who was still currently peaceful and seemingly hadn’t heard the full conversation—saying:
“I’m not asking you—”
“I was going to ask the ten-years-later you, but it’s nothing important anyway. Are you finished with training? Let’s head back to our base.”
Hibari Kyoya gazed at her thoughtfully for a while. Though he knew she was being perfunctory, a few seconds later, he turned around decisively and walked toward the other end of the hallway, using action as his answer to her question.
Jin Chaoyan let out a massive sigh of relief, even pressing her hand against her chest. Feeling her heart beating at a normal rhythm, she didn’t dare linger in this den of trouble. She quickened her pace to follow the youth’s back, wishing she could open a space portal and teleport back next door instantly.
In the training room.
Sasagawa Ryohei pulled the whole oyster shell out of his mouth, spat aggressively, and looked quite bewildered as to why Jin Chaoyan hadn’t let him finish. Beside him, Dino also let out a long breath of relief, saying fortunately:
“That was terrifying. Thank god Chaoyan was here. I was already mentally prepared for Kyoya to go on a rampage and for me to have to risk my life to stop him.”
Reborn kicked him squarely in the face. “Is this how you act in front of your students? Stop embarrassing yourself here.”
After pinning Dino to the ground with his foot, Reborn curled his lips and looked at the Vongola members in the room, announcing: “However, regardless of whether the news is true or false, it does remind me of one thing. If this operation against Byakuran succeeds and we return to ten years ago, Tsuna, organize a full physical examination for all family members.”
Sawada Tsuna: “Eh?!”
Because Byakuran hadn’t left them much time, the boys were only briefly distracted by the massive gossip Squalo dropped before throwing themselves back into Vongola Box training and dealing with the girls’ strike.
Two days before Choice began—
Sawada Tsuna decided to tell the girls the truth.
His decision met with strong opposition from Sasagawa Ryohei; rumors said he even took a punch from Ryohei because of it. However, when Jin Chaoyan went to the dining room that evening, she could clearly feel that the previous oppressive, gloom-before-the-storm atmosphere had transformed into a vigorous, united battle spirit.
For a moment, she even considered changing her mind and going to Choice to witness their growth. But ultimately, remembering the reality of her mountain of debt, she dismissed the idea.
Sawada Tsuna and the others only learned of Jin Chaoyan’s decision not to attend on the morning of the Choice battle. The Vongola Decimo was very surprised:
“Wh-why?”
“Because there are other people in the base. The injured Lal Mirch, Mr. Yamamoto who isn’t suited to go, my housekeeper Chinari, Mr. Kusakabe, and so on… Someone with at least a bit of combat power has to stay behind, right?” Jin Chaoyan counted them off on her fingers and answered seriously.
“That makes sense,” Reborn nodded after hearing her out. “Then we’ll leave the people in the base to your care.”
“Understood.”
Sawada Tsuna: “?”
Ever since witnessing Jin Chaoyan’s ability to easily talk Hibari away at the conference room door, he was certain that this wife of Hibari-senpai could handle the highly idiosyncratic Cloud Guardian. Thus, seeing Reborn and Jin Chaoyan make such a casual decision, he instinctively clutched his head and began to mutter:
“But… but if you aren’t there, Chaoyan… what if Hibari-senpai refuses to follow the game rules and insists on doing things his own way?”
“Huh?” Jin Chaoyan pointed at herself, not quite understanding how he got the misconception that she could stop Hibari if he truly got angry or entered a battle craze. “Isn’t Mr. Reborn there? You don’t need to worry.”
After a pause, she tried to add, “Actually, before he gets truly angry, he’s quite easy to coax. Just give him a few compliments.”
Sawada Tsuna: “?” He instinctively imagined the scene of trying to communicate with Hibari Kyoya. “…How do I compliment him?”
Do people even need to be taught how to kiss ass?
Jin Chaoyan pondered for two seconds but couldn’t come up with an example on the spot. She could only manage, “Just… compliment him with sincerity? Anyway, he admires you so much; if you praise him, it’ll definitely work.”
Sawada Tsuna: “…”
Thinking of the scenes where the future Hibari had beaten him up from every possible angle in the training room, he felt Jin Chaoyan might have some misunderstanding of the word “admire.”
The day of the Choice battle, Byakuran caused a massive commotion in Namimori.
Even inside the Hibari base, Jin Chaoyan could hear the faint sound of explosions outside. Chinari stood in the courtyard, looking out with worry. Her posture reminded Jin Chaoyan of the cameras placed around the perimeter, so she asked Tetsuya Kusakabe for a feed of the external surveillance.
Sure enough, through the hidden cameras outside the Namimori Shrine, she could clearly see large plumes of smoke and forest fires on the opposite mountain left by some unknown attack. Meanwhile, the group that had gathered outside the shrine to participate in Choice had already vanished.
“…The battlefield isn’t in Namimori?” Kusakabe said instinctively while watching the monitor.
“Isn’t that great?” Jin Chaoyan crossed her arms and gave a lazy smile. “If the battlefield were in Namimori, that guy—whether ten years ago or ten years later—would be driven insane with rage.”
Kusakabe imagined that scene and felt the Madam had a very good point.
After the brief commotion, Namimori returned to tranquility. Seeing no more excitement to be had, Jin Chaoyan walked out to play with Hibird, who had been left at the base.
She gave Hibird a few different “looks,” took some “superstar” photos, and edited them. As she did, the sunset in the courtyard gradually dipped westward. After another booming sound, Kusakabe emerged from the monitor room and said to her:
“Madam, Kyo-san and the others are back!”
Hibird, perched on Jin Chaoyan’s fingertip, flapped its wings and cheered happily, “Hibari~ Hibari~”
“I know, I’ll take you to see him.” Jin Chaoyan walked out with Kusakabe toward the exit of the Hibari base. Because they were hidden by Mist attribute camouflage, they appeared to step out of thin air, giving the outside Sawada Tsuna a fright.
“Welcome back in triumph, everyone! Do we need to hold a celebration ceremony?” Kusakabe gave them a thumbs-up.
Jin Chaoyan walked to the edge where the youth stood, his aura looking far from peaceful. As he turned his head to look at her, she casually held up Hibird and had it “kiss” his cheek.
Hibari Kyoya: “!”
Seeing such a blank expression on that face was a rare treat; Jin Chaoyan almost couldn’t resist taking out her phone to record it. How cute!
Because he hadn’t been chosen to fight in Choice and had to suppress his battle intent, only to be forced to retreat with Vongola afterward, Hibari Kyoya was extremely displeased. But now, frozen by the affection of his pet, he saw the smile in Jin Chaoyan’s curved eyes. The aggressive aura around him dissipated for no reason, and he instantly regained his usual calm.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
Jin Chaoyan placed Hibird—who had just “kissed” him—on his shoulder. “I saw you were in a bad mood, so I’m coaxing you. What’s wrong? Was Choice not fun?”
“Hmph,” he replied expressionlessly. “Boring.”
At the same time, Jin Chaoyan heard Sawada Tsuna nearby telling Kusakabe about the defeat in Choice. Mid-sentence, a slender little girl in unique clothing stepped out of the mobile tent-like device Irie Shoichi had created and brought to the Choice battlefield.
Meeting those clear, sky-blue eyes, Jin Chaoyan felt a slight startle. Before she could speak, the other girl offered a sunny smile first:
“Chaoyan-neesan, we meet again.”
“Yuni.”
Compared to their previous meeting where Yuni’s soul spoke through a puppet-like body, this time the heavy, “divine-prodigy” vibe of someone forcing themselves into maturity had vanished. Jin Chaoyan felt that only now was she truly meeting her, so she also smiled and reached out her hand:
“I suppose this counts as our first official meeting? It’s a pleasure to meet you, and thank you for saving me last time.”
Yuni shook her hand, shaking her head with a bright, warm smile. She gave off the feeling of looking at a vast clear sky from the shade of a tree—warm, but not scorching. “I didn’t do much. Besides, even if I hadn’t appeared then, you would have found a way to leave.”
“You two… know each other?” Sawada Tsuna, his attention drawn by their conversation, leaned in curiously.
Jin Chaoyan and Yuni nodded together but didn’t elaborate.
Just then, the “coaxed” Hibari Kyoya noticed more people crowding around. His aura, which had been briefly soothed, began to agitate again. He knit his brows and turned to leave when—
“Wait, Chairman.” Jin Chaoyan grabbed the sleeve where his red Disciplinary Committee armband was pinned. “Do you want to go back to the base to eat something?”
“No.” Hibari Kyoya felt today’s “crowding density” was already high enough. He didn’t want to see these people anymore, so he didn’t even want to return to the Japanese-style base connected to the Vongola side.
“Alright then. You and Mr. Dino can settle dinner outside. I’m planning to make Flower Cakes in a bit. Those pastries are best eaten hot, they aren’t as fresh if packed, so I guess I won’t send any to you?”
“Whatever.”
The boy turned to leave with Hibird on his shoulder, but Dino asked an extra question, “Flower Cakes? Isn’t it out of season for cherry blossoms?”
“Mr. Dino, how could we have cherry blossoms in our yard?” Jin Chaoyan explained with a smile. “They’re made with Damascus roses from a nearby estate. Chinari already went to pick up the flowers for me… Mmh, the ten-years-later Hibari really liked eating these. Would you like to try some?”
Dino: “!” He was instantly intrigued, losing all interest in chasing after his petty fifteen-year-old student. “Then I’ll—”
Halfway through his sentence, he sensed killing intent and jumped aside just in time. He turned to find his student had doubled back at some point. “Kyoya?”
“I’ve changed my mind.”
Hibari’s tonfa strike missed, but he didn’t seem to care, casually putting his weapon away. “The Flower Cakes. I’ll eat them.”
Then, his grey-blue eyes looked at the dodging Dino beside him. With a hint of killing intent and a slight curl of his lips, he added, “But you can’t give any to him.”
Dino: “?”
He asked in shock, “Are you being protective of your food, Kyoya? I’m your most beloved Home Tutor; do you have to be this stingy?”
“Home Tutor? There is no such relationship. You are just a herbivore about to be bitten to death.”
Watching their interaction, Yuni laughed softly from the side, sighing: “How magical.”
“Hmm?” Jin Chaoyan turned her gaze back to her, curious.
“I have the same ability as Byakuran—the power to visit other parallel worlds. Among eight trillion parallel worlds, this Cloud Guardian of the Vongola family is always a loner. Chaoyan-neesan is the only one who married him and lives with him—”
Yuni said with a beaming smile, “This world truly is the one capable of giving birth to miracles.”
Sawada Tsuna, overhearing yet another piece of Hibari gossip: “?!” His pupils shook with the force of an earthquake.
Only one wife in eight trillion worlds? What kind of “King of Loners” constitution is that?!
