After Transmigrating to Become Lady Skylark - Chapter 50
Chapter 50
Seeing that everyone at the Merone Base was out of danger, Jin Chaoyan didn’t stay in the Vongola strategy room. She bid farewell to Reborn and Giannini and went to find Haru to check on her and Kyoko.
Most of the combatants had been sent to attack the Merone Base today, and with the previous Millefiore raid on this base, she suspected the girls were living in fear.
She was right.
When she reached B7, the restaurant only held Bianchi, Fuuta, Haru, Kyoko, and Kina. Seeing her, Haru was startled. “Hahi? Chaoyan, were you left behind too?”
“Mhm,” Jin Chaoyan nodded and sat down. Seeing the freshly baked pastries no one had touched, she picked one up and took a bite. “Smells great. Kina, your skills have improved again.”
“I’m glad you like it, Madam.” Kina poured her tea and sat beside her at her request.
Just then, Haru frowned and spoke up. “Since the middle of the night, there’ve been these dangerous thump-thump-thump sounds. I thought that since you and ‘that person’ are so close, he wouldn’t hide things from you. I can’t believe… well, forget us, but how could he hide it from you too!”
Bianchi gently smoothed her hair and added in a comforting tone, “These men… always so self-righteous.”
Eating her pastry, Jin Chaoyan guiltily rubbed her nose. Between her and Hibari, she wasn’t the one being kept in the dark; if anything, she was the one hiding more secrets. But she wasn’t sure: if she had been awake during the raid, would Hibari have chosen to take her to the battlefield?
“I wonder what Tsuna and the others are doing… and when they’ll be back,” Kyoko sighed worriedly.
Fuuta added carefully, “Don’t—don’t worry! Tsuna-大哥 and the others will definitely return safely!”
“They actually will be back soon,” Jin Chaoyan said, finishing her pastry and wiping her hands. “Based on the current situation, you might even be able to go outside the base to meet them later.”
This revelation shocked Bianchi and Fuuta, who also knew the situation. They exchanged looks, realizing the joyous implication: The operation against the Merone Base was a success!
Haru jumped up with a cheer, but then looked back at the still-seated Jin Chaoyan. “Aren’t you coming with us?”
Chaoyan shook her head, her light blue bangs swaying and obscuring the purple diamond mark on her forehead. “No.”
“Why?” Haru asked curiously. “Didn’t Hibari go out with Tsuna and the others?”
Good question. Jin Chaoyan gave a dry laugh. “Because the one who went out was indeed my husband, but the one coming back definitely isn’t.”
Haru: “?” She really didn’t understand adult romance. Bianchi, however, nodded thoughtfully.
By the time Reborn officially notified everyone that the boys were returning, Jin Chaoyan had returned to the Hibari base and received a call from Kusakabe.
“Madam, I am currently following Kyo-san—the one from ten years ago—toward Namimori Middle School. He doesn’t seem to want to return to the base. What are your… plans?”
At that moment, Jin Chaoyan was sitting in the sun-drenched courtyard, plucking leaves from a plant. Perhaps the week of high-intensity training had changed her habits; being this idle felt uncomfortable. “I don’t have plans. But he seems very difficult to deal with. Mr. Kusakabe, please take care of him, and watch out for your own safety.”
Kusakabe: “…” Thanks for the reminder. He recalled himself trying to teach the Chairman how to fight earlier and felt a phantom pain in his jaw.
In his anxiety for the future, he blurted out, “Mr. Dino was supposed to arrive today. With him here, even the younger Kyo-san might listen to reason. Unfortunately, on his way from the airport, his favorite sports car broke down. He’s staying at a repair shop for a while.”
“Eh?” Chaoyan sounded confused.
Kusakabe explained, “I mentioned him before—Mr. Dino is the one who accompanied the fifteen-year-old Kyo-san during his training across Japan. He’s the boss of the Cavallone family, the third-ranked alliance family of the Vongola, and Kyo-san’s teacher.”
Because of the future Hibari’s attitude toward her, Kusakabe no longer hid Mafia intel from her. He explained everything in detail to help her understand.
“Oh…” Jin Chaoyan, who was basking in the sun without even wearing sunscreen thanks to the Yin Seal, lazily let go of a leaf. “What I meant was… does Mr. Dino like sports cars that much? If he doesn’t mind, he can borrow mine.”
Kusakabe thought he had misheard. “What?”
“He can borrow my sports car. I’ll send you a picture; ask him if he likes it. If he’s okay with it, come back to the base, and I’ll give you the keys.”
Jin Chaoyan thought this was a brilliant idea. Anyone, as long as they could keep the fifteen-year-old Hibari occupied! And since Dino was Hibari’s teacher, he must be very reliable. Lending him a car would be no problem at all!
6:00 PM.
Jin Chaoyan was leaving the B8 training room when she ran into the boys in the elevator. Sawada Tsuna immediately thought of Hibari’s reaction at the Merone Base and called out hesitantly, “Chaoyan-san…”
“Hm? Who is she? Tsuna, your friend?” a boy with silver-grey hair and bandages on his hands asked curiously.
“This is…” After Gokudera and Yamamoto greeted her, Tsuna introduced her. “This is Hibari-学姐’s wife from ten years in the future.”
“WHAT?!” Ryohei Sasagawa was shocked for two full seconds before realizing what the word “wife” meant, his eyes widening into circles.
Jin Chaoyan noticed he looked younger and guessed he had been swapped too. “Are you the younger Mr. Sasagawa?”
“Yes, he’s Kyoko’s brother, Ryohei Sasagawa,” Tsuna introduced.
“Ah,” Chaoyan rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “So it’s you. Don’t be so surprised; I know your wife ten years from now too.”
Ryohei: “?!” Tsuna: “Eh?” Gokudera and Yamamoto: “?!”
“Why?!” Tsuna, whose worldview was being shattered for the umpteenth time, clutched his head. “Even Big Bro…?”
Gokudera supported him. “Tenth! Get a hold of yourself! There’s a saying that ‘fools have fool’s luck.’ A lawn-head idiot like him probably falls into that category!”
Ryohei was too stunned to argue about being called an idiot. Yamamoto laughed and rubbed his head. “That’s great. It feels like everyone ten years later is quite impressive.”
The elevator was noisy. Jin Chaoyan, used to Hibari’s quiet lifestyle, felt slightly out of place. “By the way, do you have a new plan?”
“Yes, we plan to tomorrow…” Tsuna started to mention the Vongola Boxes, but seeing Kyoko and Haru waiting outside, he immediately swallowed his words. Ryohei, still reeling from being a “winner at life,” regained his composure and interjected confidently, “Tomorrow, we’re holding another Sumo tournament!”
Jin Chaoyan: “…” She quickly distanced herself from the group to avoid catching their stupidity.
Remembering the sight of Hibari being beaten by Genkishi that morning, even if she knew this was a Shonen manga where the heroes would win, she still felt worried about this fifteen-year-old Chairman. At the very least… if he hit a crisis again, she wanted to be able to rush to his side.
Jin Chaoyan and Kina arrived at the gates of the future Namimori Middle School. She called Kusakabe to ask if the fifteen-year-old Hibari needed a change of clothes or bedding.
When the call connected, she heard noisy chatting. “Mr. Kusakabe?”
“Yes, Madam. I’m buying sake with an old friend. Is there… what? You’re already near Namimori Middle School? Wait, we’ll come find you once we finish shopping.”
Hanging up, she didn’t dare enter the school for fear of trespassing on a “beast’s territory.” However, a scream erupted from the side street. “Wait! Kyoya, listen to me…”
The natural, intimate address caught her attention. She moved a few steps and heard the sound of wind whistling, impact, and finally a loud BANG against metal!
“!” Her heart skipped a beat. Before she could see the alley, a familiar, crisper voice rang out. “You talk too much, Cavallone. I’m not interested. You just need to be bitten to death.”
Thud! Thud!
Jin Chaoyan walked into the alley just as the last light of dusk faded. She saw two people. One was a handsome man with blonde hair, wearing long sleeves even in summer, with strange tattoos on his hands. He was slumped against a car, his long whip tangled around his left foot, which was hooked onto the hood.
The other was the fifteen-year-old Kyoya Hibari. The boy looked spirited, his black gakuran draped over his shoulders with the red “Disciplinary” armband swaying in the breeze. He held his silver tonfas, ready to fight the talkative guy, but was distracted by her arrival.
Dino, upside down, struggled to stand straight. Unwrapping the whip, he sighed, “I say, Kyoya, your temper is still so bad. This car isn’t mine… if you break it like this, how am I supposed to explain it?”
Especially since it was lent to him by the future Kyoya’s wife! Dino looked at the dent in the hood. “Modified with such a beautiful blend of Sakura Pink and Ice Berry Pink… I wonder how much the repairs will be.”
“Don’t mention that disgusting color in front of me again—”
Hibari, who had lost interest in biting him, flared with killing intent again. His grey-blue eyes sharpened.
Plop. Plop.
Tears hit the ground. The sound was small, but given the sudden change in the newcomer, it was striking.
Dino and Hibari both looked over. They saw a beautiful woman who had been silent since appearing, now looking like she was trying to endure something but failing as tears streamed down her face.
Kina, frightened by the fight, hadn’t dared to speak, but seeing Chaoyan so upset, she pulled out a tissue. “M-Madam…”
Dino looked at the car, then at the boy, and a terrible realization hit him. “Wait… Kyoya, have you met your wife from ten years in the future?”
…It couldn’t be this lady currently witnessing them wrecking her sports car, could it?
Before Hibari could answer, Kusakabe arrived with Romario, carrying sake and bread. He didn’t realize the problem at first. “Madam, good day.” Then he saw the car and froze.
“Kyo-san, Mr. Dino…” Kusakabe felt like he couldn’t breathe. Seeing the dented car and the two men responsible, he felt a sense of suffocation.
Romario, though out of the loop, quickly moved to his boss’s side. “Boss, I was gone for a minute, and you’ve caused a huge disaster?”
“Romario…” Dino looked helpless. He walked up to Jin Chaoyan. “Mrs. Hibari, I am so sorry. The car was an accident. May I pay for the repairs?”
Hearing that someone would pay, Chaoyan wiped her tears, but she still couldn’t accept the association. Her voice trembled. “M-my name is Jin Chaoyan. Nice to meet you, Mr. Dino.”
You don’t look like you’re ‘nice to meet’ anyone right now, Dino thought. He knew how to handle lovers, but comforting his student’s wife was another story. He looked at Hibari. “Kyoya, you started the fight that broke the car. Aren’t you going to apologize?”
Apologize? That word didn’t exist in Hibari’s dictionary.
He looked at the woman. Her light blue hair, her delicate face, her elegant dark blue dress, and finally, her eyes. The violet eyes were brimming with tears she was trying so hard to hold back.
Kusakabe whispered to him, “Kyo-san, please do something. The last time Madam cried like this, it took two hours to comfort her.”
“Wao.” Hibari raised an eyebrow, letting out a faint exclamation of wonder.
Kusakabe felt a familiar sense of despair. At this moment, he deeply missed the future Kyoya Hibari who actually knew how to behave.
“I didn’t break the car,” the boy said nonchalantly. “Cavallone hit it while dodging.”
Dino: “?” So I should have just stood there and gotten hit?
He despaired at his student’s EQ. Fearing a marital crisis for his future self, he smiled apologetically at Chaoyan. “Miss Jin, this kid is still immature. Please don’t hold it against him. Once this is over, I’ll treat you both to dinner as a formal apology.”
Jin Chaoyan nodded, her nose red. She wiped her eyes and looked away. “I-it’s okay. Sorry you had to see that. As long as it can be fixed.” She paused, then whispered even softer, “…It’s not Sakura Pink. It’s Ice Berry Pink.”
Her beautiful car! What part of the color was ‘disgusting’?!
If only she could beat him… The thought made her want to cry again. She had to look up to stop the tears.
Dino heard her and realized there was more than just money at play. He glared at his student. “Kyoya, your words hurt her. Apologize.”
“…” Hibari barely managed to swallow a refusal.
He glanced at her profile. The most striking thing was the crimson at the corners of her eyes. Because her skin was so pale and thin, the crying made her look like the red clouds of dusk—or a pampered rose blooming in a greenhouse.
Apologize? Not in his rules.
Hibari thought to himself: Doesn’t she look quite good when she’s crying?
