- Chapter 7 - The Host Will Lose Half Their Lifespan
Xie Lin started, suddenly reminded of the memory fragments within the life plaque.
Could it be that they weren’t from the future?
Were they… from the past?
The venomous thorns of the Heart-Devouring Lotus pierced into Xiao Jin’s skin, fresh blood trickling down his arm and onto Xie Lin’s face.
The warmth of the liquid caused Xie Lin’s heart to wrench in pain, a surge of intense emotion shattering his rational restraint—
“Xiao Jin!”
With reddened eyes, he roared, “If you dare to die, I will never forgive you in this lifetime!”
A smile suddenly bloomed across Xiao Jin’s pallid face. “Very well.”
As the sword’s radiance swelled to an explosive intensity, Xiao Jin actually severed his own arm!
In the moment blood gushed forth, he formed an incantation with his remaining hand, transforming his destiny-bound sword into a stream of light that caught Xie Lin and bore him toward the cliff top, while he himself plummeted into the sea of lotuses…
“No!!”
Xie Lin’s agonizing scream rang through the entire valley.
The Heart-Devouring Lotus within his body began to burn fiercely, an unprecedented surge of power sweeping through his entire being.
Breaking free from the sword’s light, he threw himself without hesitation in the direction Xiao Jin had fallen.
“System! Exchange all my points!”
He roared internally, “Give me something that can save him!”
[Exchange successful]
The system’s voice was uncharacteristically solemn: [You have obtained the Twin-Heart Contract; the price is half of the host’s lifespan.]
Without a moment of hesitation, Xie Lin chose to use it.
While plummeting through the air, he held the unconscious Xiao Jin tightly, biting his finger to draw a blood-red rune over the other man’s heart.
“With my life, I extend your soul…”
The instant the crimson rune ignited, the entire field of Heart-Devouring Lotuses abruptly froze.
Xie Lin felt his vitality draining away at a rapid pace, while light patterns began to coalesce and grow into a new limb where Xiao Jin’s arm had been severed.
[Warning! Inner demon value has exceeded 80%!]
Amidst the system’s alarms, Xie Lin saw Xie Wuchen standing at the edge of the cliff, clutching the life plaque he had taken from Xiao Jin’s severed arm.
“Truly touching.”
Xie Wuchen’s voice drifted from a distant place. “Pity… the game has only just begun.”
Darkness consumed Xie Lin’s consciousness.
In his final moments, he vaguely heard the sigh of the woman in cyan:
“Silly child, the Heart-Devouring Lotus was never a curse…”
Xie Lin was awakened by pain.
He snapped his eyes open, his chest feeling as if it had been carved open and his internal organs twisted together, leaving him drenched in cold sweat.
Instinctively, he reached out to touch his chest, only to find the skin completely intact, yet the stabbing pain felt real enough to almost suffocate him.
“Awake?”
A cool, refined voice reached him from his side.
Turning his head, Xie Lin saw Xiao Jin propped up against the head of the bed, his complexion pale as paper, his right sleeve hanging empty and limp—
Wait, that wasn’t right!
Xie Lin’s eyes widened; Xiao Jin’s right arm was clearly perfectly fine, so why…
“Your arm…” his voice trembled.
Xiao Jin lowered his gaze to look at his own right arm and said indifferently, “An effect of the Twin-Heart Contract.”
Xie Lin blinked, realization finally dawning on him—
That excruciating pain wasn’t his own; it belonged to Xiao Jin!
“Sensory sharing?”
Gritting his teeth, he glared at the system panel and found a new notification:
[Twin-Heart Contract has taken effect: Host and target pain synchronization rate is 50%; emotional synchronization rate is 30%.]
Xie Lin took a deep breath, fighting to suppress the urge to curse out loud.
Seemingly aware of his emotional volatility, Xiao Jin curled his lips slightly. “What, do you regret it?”
Xie Lin sneered. “Regret?”
“I, Xie Lin, have never regretted anything I’ve done in my life.”
Yeah, right!
If he had known the Twin-Heart Contract would leave him in such agony, he wouldn’t have used it even if it killed him!
Xiao Jin didn’t call his bluff, merely reaching out to gently press a hand against his forehead, channeling a stream of gentle, nourishing spiritual energy that slowly began to alleviate a portion of the pain.
Xie Lin instinctively wanted to dodge, but the other man held him by the shoulder. “Don’t move.”
“…” Xie Lin froze, his heart rate accelerating uncontrollably.
Xiao Jin’s fingers were cool, his fingertips calloused, as he lightly rubbed Xie Lin’s temples, the spiritual energy seeping into his meridians like a murmuring stream.
Xie Lin closed his eyes, unexpectedly finding a sense of peace, and even felt himself drifting toward sleep.
“What about Xie Wuchen?” he asked, forcing himself to stay alert.
“He got away,” Xiao Jin replied in a calm tone.
Yet, Xie Lin keenly caught a trace of murderous intent.
“He took my life plaque.”
Xie Lin snapped his eyes open. “What is inside the life plaque?”
Withdrawing his hand, Xiao Jin said blandly, “A few things he should not know.”
Xie Lin stared at him, trying to glean some hint from that composed, ripple-free face, but Xiao Jin’s eyes were as deep as an abyss, completely unreadable.
“How many things are you hiding from me?” Xie Lin couldn’t help but ask.
Xiao Jin was silent for a long moment before suddenly leaning in close, his nose nearly brushing against Xie Lin’s. “Do you want to know?”
Xie Lin’s breath hitched, and as he instinctively pulled back, he found himself locked in place by Xiao Jin’s hand on the nape of his neck.
The distance between them was close enough to feel each other’s breath, and Xie Lin could even make out the curve of Xiao Jin’s eyelashes, as well as the faint markings visible beneath the cinnabar mole on his brow—
They looked like a seal.
“I…”
Xie Lin’s throat felt tight, his heart hammering against his ribs as if it were about to burst out.
Xiao Jin stared at him for a few seconds before suddenly letting out a soft laugh and releasing his grip.
“Never mind. If I told you now, I fear you wouldn’t be able to bear it.”
Xie Lin: “……?”
Is this man insane?!
Running off after teasing him?!
He glared at Xiao Jin with gritted teeth and was about to blow up when the door was suddenly shoved open, and Lin Miaomiao burst in, looking flustered.
“Eldest Senior Brother! The sect master wants you to… oh?”
She froze where she stood, her gaze sweeping back and forth between the disheveled Xie Lin and Xiao Jin standing by the bed, finally fixating on the intimate distance between the two of them.
“Did I… interrupt you again?” she asked cautiously.
Xie Lin: “…”
Xiao Jin’s expression remained unchanged. “What is it?”
Lin Miaomiao gave two dry laughs. “The sect master said that people from the Nether Palace have infiltrated the back mountain and wants you to go to the council hall.”
Xiao Jin nodded. “I understand.”
Lin Miaomiao retreated swiftly, closing the door considerately on her way out, leaving behind a parting remark: “Please, continue! I didn’t see a thing!”
Xie Lin: “…Xiao Jin!”
Xiao Jin raised an eyebrow. “Hmm?”
“Did you do that on purpose?!” Xie Lin was so angry he wanted to kill someone.
Xiao Jin offered no denial, merely taking a medicinal pill from his sleeve and handing it over. “Eat this.”
“What is it?” Xie Lin asked vigilantly.
“It’s for the pain.”
Xiao Jin said coolly, “The pain-sharing from the Twin-Heart Contract will persist for three days; this medicine will mitigate it.”
Half-believing him, Xie Lin took it and swallowed it down.
The medicine took effect rapidly, and the pain in his chest truly eased considerably.
“Stay here and rest.”
Xiao Jin turned toward the door. “I’ll go and be right back.”
Xie Lin frowned. “Are you planning to face the people from the Nether Palace all by yourself?”
Xiao Jin glanced back at him and suddenly smiled. “Are you worried about me?”
Xie Lin: “…I’m just worried that if you die, you’ll drag me down with you!”
Without waiting for a response, Xiao Jin pushed the door open and left.
Xie Lin stared at the closed door, a inexplicable sense of irritation rising in his heart.
The system spoke up abruptly: [The host’s emotional state is undergoing intense fluctuations.]
[It is suggested to take deep breaths to avoid triggering the inner demon.]
Xie Lin inhaled deeply, struggling to soothe his mood.
He lowered his head to look at his palm, where Xiao Jin’s warmth still lingered against his skin.
“System, can the Twin-Heart Contract be dissolved?”
The system replied:
[It is possible, but it requires the consent of both parties.]
[Furthermore, after dissolution, the host will lose half of their lifespan.]
