- Chapter 6 - The Last Time I Let Go, I Regretted It for Three Years
With a flash of cold light, the tip of Xiao Jin’s sword came to a halt right against the window lattice, a mere inch away from Xie Lin’s nose.
Under the moonlight, the cinnabar mole between his brows looked bewitchingly crimson, while the emotions churning in the depths of his eyes were ones Xie Lin could not decipher.
“I… just needed to use the nightstool!” Xie Lin said dryly.
Xiao Jin sheathed his sword, suddenly bursting into a fit of coughing as thin threads of blood seeped between his fingers.
Unable to maintain any pretense of composure, Xie Lin rushed out the door to steady him. “You’re injured?”
“An old wound.” Xiao Jin wiped away the blood with casual indifference.
Abruptly, he seized Xie Lin’s wrist. “You are going to the Cliff of Broken Souls.”
This was not framed as a question.
A jolt ran through Xie Lin’s heart as he forced himself to remain calm. “What nonsense are you talking about? I”
“The life plaque senses the whereabouts of its holder,” Xiao Jin interrupted.
His voice was hoarse. “I knew from the start that you would go.”
Xie Lin fell silent.
So this life plaque functioned as a tracking device as well?
“Then don’t stop me.”
He shook off Xiao Jin’s hand. “Xie Wuchen said my mother might still be alive!”
Xiao Jin’s gaze darkened. “Do you know what kind of place the Cliff of Broken Souls is?”
He violently tore open his collar, exposing a ferocious scar across his chest. “Three years ago, I nearly lost my life right there, all because…”
His voice cut off abruptly.
Staring in astonishment, Xie Lin gazed at that scar running straight across the chest, its shape an exact match for the wound from Xiao Jin’s self-inflicted blade in his memories!
“Because of what?” he heard his own voice trembling.
Fastening his collar back up, Xiao Jin turned toward the pear tree. “Someone used Heart-Devouring Lotus hosts as sacrifices in an attempt to tear open the Demon Abyss.”
He plucked a pear flower and tucked it gently behind Xie Lin’s ear.
“I suspect Xie Wuchen didn’t tell you what is suppressed beneath the Cliff of Broken Souls.”
The chilly touch sent a shiver running down Xie Lin’s spine.
The original novel had indeed mentioned the Demon Abyss, but that was much later in the story…
“I have to go,” he insisted stubbornly. “If I miss this clue…”
“I’ll go with you,” Xiao Jin stated suddenly.
Xie Lin’s eyes widened. “Are you out of your mind? Xie Wuchen explicitly said”
“He said ‘come alone,'” Xiao Jin sneered, his fingertips shimmering with spiritual light.
“He didn’t say someone couldn’t follow quietly behind.”
The spiritual light transformed into a slender chain that wrapped around Xie Lin’s wrist, the other end tying itself securely around Xiao Jin’s pinky finger.
Recognizing this as the “Twin-Heart Chain” a high-tier tracking technique utilized by cultivators, though typically reserved for.
“Partners in dual cultivation?” Xie Lin blurted out.
The corners of Xiao Jin’s lips curled upward. “So Young Master Xie is familiar with this.”
Deliberately shaking his pinky, he added, “Now we can openly claim this is a secret technique for dual cultivation.”
The tips of Xie Lin’s ears burned red. Why on earth was this guy bringing up such nonsense in front of Lin Miaomiao?!
“Who wants to…” Before he could finish, Xiao Jin suddenly leaned in close, inhaling softly near the side of his neck.
Frowning, Xiao Jin muttered, “A disguise pill? Who are you planning to impersonate?”
Secretly startled by his sharp intuition, Xie Lin had no choice but to confess, “You.”
The air froze for a single instant.
Xiao Jin’s expression turned peculiar as he suddenly reached out to stroke Xie Lin’s cheek. “If you want to impersonate me, a disguise pill alone won’t be enough.”
Cool spiritual energy flooded into Xie Lin’s facial meridians, and he could feel his bone structure shifting slightly.
When he looked into the basin of water Xiao Jin conjured as a mirror, the reflection startlingly displayed the other man’s cold and handsome face!
“Is this… the Shape-Shifting Technique?” Xie Lin touched his unfamiliar contours.
Draping his own outer robe over Xie Lin’s shoulders, Xiao Jin replied, “The Shape-Shifting Technique combined with a disguise pill will hold for two hours.”
With that, he hung a jade pendant around Xie Lin’s waist.
“My identity token.”
Feeling entirely ill at ease in his own skin, Xie Lin felt as though he had been stuffed into someone else’s shell.
Especially given the way Xiao Jin was looking at him right now with an intensity hot enough to make his panic flare.
“Why are you helping me to this extent?” he couldn’t help asking.
Xiao Jin’s fingers paused as he adjusted Xie Lin’s collar. “You’ll understand soon enough.”
Situated along the borders of the Mystic Heaven Sect’s forbidden grounds, the Cliff of Broken Souls was shrouded in a perpetual, thick mist.
Following the agreed-upon arrangement, Xie Lin arrived at the cliff edge alone. Behind him yawned a bottomless abyss, while Xie Wuchen’s figure gradually materialized out of the heavy fog ahead.
“Punctual.”
Still wearing his silver mask, Xie Wuchen spoke in a voice even hoarser than usual. “It seems the young master cares deeply about that secret.”
Feigning calmness, Xie Lin mimicked Xiao Jin’s tone. “Cut the nonsense.”
Xie Wuchen burst into sudden laughter, the sound tinged with a manic frenzy. “Interesting! Xiao Jin taught you how to impersonate him?”
With a violent flick of his cloak, he exposed a blackened Heart-Devouring Lotus mark upon his chest.
“Did you really think I wouldn’t see through this little trick?”
A profound shock rippling through his chest, Xie Lin instinctively took half a step backward.
Xie Wuchen’s Heart-Devouring Lotus was easily twice the size of his own, the edges of its petals stained a rotting, purplish-black.
“Don’t be nervous.”
Xie Wuchen offered an eerie smile. “I anticipated that he would follow.”
Snapping his fingers, he caused a blood-red barrier to erupt all around them. “This is the Heart-Devouring Barrier; only hosts can pass through it.”
“Your dear senior brother… is trapped inside an illusion array right now.”
Mentally cursing, Xie Lin realized he had indeed fallen right into a trap!
Attempting to check the Twin-Heart Chain, he discovered the connection had already been severed.
“Where is my mother?” he cut straight to the point.
Pacing toward the edge of the cliff, Xie Wuchen signaled for him to look down.
The instant the thick fog parted, Xie Lin drew in a sharp gasp—
At the bottom of the cliff lay a massive field of Heart-Devouring Lotuses!
Right in the center of hundreds of blooming lotus flowers stood a crystal coffin, within which the silhouette of a woman in cyan robes was faintly visible.
“That is…”
“Your mother isn’t dead; she has merely been slumbering for eighteen years.”
Xie Wuchen’s voice suddenly turned gentle. “She was the most beautiful Heart-Devouring Lotus host I have ever laid eyes on so flawless that… I simply couldn’t bear to use her as a sacrifice.”
A wave of nausea twisted through Xie Lin’s stomach.
In the novel, Xie Wuchen was portrayed as a pure, ambitious schemer, yet the man before him clearly held a morbid, obsessive fixation in his eyes!
“What do you want?” he asked, maintaining his guard.
Seizing Xie Lin’s wrist with sudden violence, Xie Wuchen stared at him intently.
The moment he touched the life plaque, his pupils contracted sharply. “Xiao Jin gave his life plaque to you? Hah… Heaven truly favors me!”
Before Xie Lin could even react, a tremendous force yanked him toward the edge of the cliff.
Forming an incantation with one hand, Xie Wuchen watched as the Heart-Devouring Lotuses at the bottom of the cliff surged wildly upward, their vines darting toward them like venomous serpents!
“You possess the purest Heart-Devouring Lotus within your body, combined with Xiao Jin’s life plaque…”
Tearing open the clothes across his chest with wild laughter, Xie Wuchen revealed the rotting lotus flower embedded over his heart:
“That is more than enough to open the Demon Abyss!”
Struggling with all his might, Xie Lin froze the instant his eyes fell upon the lotus over Xie Wuchen’s chest.
Embedded right within the pistil of that flower was a cyan jade pendant, identical in every way to the one worn by the woman in cyan from his dream!
“What did you do to my mother?!” he roared, channeling his demonic energy.
Easily deflecting his attack, Xie Wuchen sneered. “Don’t worry, the two of you can be reunited very soon.”
With those words, he shoved him outward. “Down you go!”
The exact moment the sensation of weightlessness washed over him, Xie Lin spotted a flash of white piercing through the bloody mist.
Riding his flying sword, Xiao Jin hurtled toward them, his destiny-bound blade aimed straight for Xie Wuchen’s throat!
“Watch out for the jade pendant on his chest!” Xie Lin screamed out.
With a cold chuckle, Xie Wuchen detonated the entire field of Heart-Devouring Lotuses below.
Amidst a sky-filling eruption of crimson light, countless vines coiled around the falling Xie Lin, dragging him downward toward the crystal coffin.
At the very last second, he saw Xiao Jin plunge headfirst into the abyss without a second thought…
“Catch me!”
With time running out, Xiao Jin’s hand clamped down firmly around his wrist.
Suspended mid-air, the two of them hung directly above the thrashing, clawing sea of Heart-Devouring Lotuses.
“Let go!”
Watching the vines crawl upward along Xiao Jin’s legs, Xie Lin cried out, “You’re going to get dragged down with me!”
Refusing to let go, Xiao Jin only tightened his grip further. “The last time I let go, I regretted it for three years.”
