- Chapter 1 - Bleeding Is Not Enough To Kill Me
Yan Zhu woke up on top of a lake.
She was lying on the surface of the water, and the moon, which usually rested in the sky, had also descended into the lake, sleeping right beside her.
However, the moon in the water was not as bright as the one in the sky. The moon residing high in the night sky was a bright orange-yellow, and its light scattered across the ground like a layer of silver frost.
Only by using its light could Yan Zhu see everything around her clearly.
As her consciousness returned from dreamland, her mind suddenly became crystal clear.
“Am I not… sleeping in my dorm?”
Her voice was very soft, yet it appeared exceptionally abrupt in the silent night, startling a few sleeping birds on the tree branches and sending them fleeing in panic.
Although the pressure of university final exams was heavy, it was not enough to make someone mentally deranged.
This was obviously an unfamiliar world.
Yan Zhu braced her hands on the water surface and carefully sat up. Her movement caused ripples to spread across the lake, wrinkling the moon resting beside her.
Cascading black hair scattered across her shoulders, and occasional stray droplets of water rolled down from it, slipping into the wide neckline of the nightgown she had worn before falling asleep.
“Bodily transmigration?”
This term popped into Yan Zhu’s mind. She carefully inspected her body, and her brows quickly furrowed again.
This body did not feel like hers; or rather, it did not feel human at all.
Her skin was smooth and fair, devoid of any moles or scars, and even her pores were invisible. If not for the soft texture, she would have suspected it was made of porcelain.
Her heart was filled with doubts, but since none of them could be answered immediately, Yan Zhu had no choice but to let the matter rest for the moment.
She attempted to stand up and felt relieved upon discovering that her body did not sink as a result.
The feeling of walking barefoot on the water surface was very strange, soft, sinking slightly with every step, but the buoyancy would quickly lift her soles back up.
While experiencing this novelty, Yan Zhu walked toward the lake shore.
A strange smell was spreading through the air, becoming more pungent the closer she got to the bank.
Only when she saw a pool of bloody red beneath the bushes did Yan Zhu realize what that smell actually was.
It was blood.
Red liquid flowed out from behind a large tree roughly the girth of two people embracing, gathering fully into a small depression beside the bushes at the lakeside, reflecting the round moon in the night sky into a blood-red hue.
Yan Zhu widened her eyes, and her heart beat wildly.
She did not know where she found the courage, but by the time she came to her senses, she had already followed the bloodstains and walked around to the back of the tree.
Someone was lying there.
A person whose white clothes were stained red on one side and looked as though they were dying.
Seeming to hear her footsteps, the person’s eyelashes trembled as she struggled to open her eyes.
Yan Zhu did not notice the slight movement of the hand holding the sword; she was simply staring blankly at the face of a person who looked as if she would die at any second.
She is just a little girl.
The pain of having her golden core carved out made Song Wenqing almost faint. The fresh blood from her abdomen gushed out uncontrollably, and the surrounding smell of blood grew thicker and thicker.
Hearing the gradually approaching footsteps, Song Wenqing’s eyelashes trembled slightly, her heart sank heavily, and her last remaining shred of luck vanished completely.
She has been discovered.
She thought.
She did not know the identity of this person, nor did she know where she was.
After being pointed out as a demonic cultivator, Song Wenqing exhausted all her trump cards, using even her last life-saving magic artifact until she finally managed to break free from the encirclement of the crowd.
As to where the teleportation artifact had brought her, she was not certain; she had merely sought out the nearest location to hide in order to gain a breathing space.
However, not long after, she heard footsteps, which inevitably led Song Wenqing to suspect that that group of people had followed her.
The pain continued to stimulate her nerves stroke by stroke, and fresh blood soaked her clothes until they were sticky and unbearable. Song Wenqing’s hand holding the sword moved imperceptibly, slowly gathering the remaining spiritual power in her body into her arm.
At the slightest sign of trouble, she would strike to sever the intruder’s neck.
Her brain was groggy, and her consciousness was about to sink into the sea of dreams the next second. Song Wenqing bit hard on the tip of her tongue. The taste of rust spread in her mouth, and her mind consequently regained a brief moment of clarity.
Her eyes were injured, and blood coagulated on her eyelashes, making the simple act of opening her eyes exceptionally difficult.
After a bout of pain akin to flesh being torn apart, Song Wenqing caught sight of a world blurred into a single mass.
Through the moonlight, she could barely make out the intruder’s silhouette, slender in build, and not particularly tall.
“No spiritual power fluctuations; not that group of people.”
“The walking posture is not like someone trained in martial arts; it lacks aggressiveness.”
Having drawn this conclusion, Song Wenqing relaxed the hand holding the sword slightly, and the brows that had been slightly furrowed in pain relaxed for a split second.
However, the next moment, she tensed her body again.
She no longer had any capital to trust others; a single wrong step would plunge her into an abyss.
That figure was slowly approaching.
Closer and closer.
Song Wenqing blinked her eyes, attempting to see the scene more clearly, while silently estimating the distance in her heart.
One step, two steps, three steps…
The tenth step was taken, but the eleventh step was long in coming.
“You…”
Are you alright?
Her voice was carried into her ears by the night wind, sounding timid.
Song Wenqing’s grayish eyes looked over, but she could still only see a blur. Yet, a wondrous feeling arose out of nowhere in her heart; she suddenly felt that the expression on the face of this unidentified person right now must also be timid.
It was the sound of gravel being ground down as the other party took another step forward.
“Are you still conscious?”
Long silence was the response given to her.
Perhaps the lack of a reply led the intruder to assume that Song Wenqing had already lost consciousness, so she began to talk to herself in a small voice.
“So much blood… What should I do? If this goes on, she’s going to die…”
“What kind of world is this… I really hope this is a dream. Why did I have to encounter this…”
“She looks like she’s just a little girl. If I leave, she will die here. I, I can’t bear to stand by and watch someone die…”
“But I don’t know how to do these things. What should I do?”
“Wait, calm down. You need to calm down, don’t panic, think of a way… Right, in this situation…”
“In this situation, you need to stop the bleeding first… Stop the bleeding, stopping the bleeding requires gauze and medicine… But I don’t have any of them. What should I do…”
“No, no, no… I, I need to think carefully… I need to calm down, calm down.”
By the end, her voice was trembling.
The intruder seemed genuinely panicked by her condition.
Song Wenqing was slightly stunned, and the killing intent in her heart receded by a layer.
Yan Zhu was unaware that she had just escaped a disaster; she was busy pacifying her chaotic thoughts.
“Calm down.”
These two words served as a full stop, simultaneously symbolizing that after the previous flurry of chaos, reason had once again suppressed emotion and taken the upper hand.
Yan Zhu let out a long sigh.
She finally broke free from the initial panic of seeing the scene before her and was capable of clearer thinking.
“First, I need to stop the bleeding, and then bring the person to a safe place.”
“Let’s just do these two steps first.”
While sorting out her train of thoughts, she walked toward the dying little girl lying under the large tree.
Getting closer, Yan Zhu discovered that the other person’s eyes were actually open. A wave of joy washed over her heart; the situation was much better than she had expected. If the person was still conscious, the subsequent rescue could proceed more smoothly.
“Don’t be afraid… You must hold on; I will save you…”
Her voice was very soft, but when it drifted into Song Wenqing’s ears, it sounded like a spring thunderclap.
Save me?
She keenly captured this word. A certain place in her heart seemed to be gently poked, and then her breathing stalled for a moment.
“I’ve studied a little bit of first aid knowledge. I hope I can help you. Don’t be afraid…”
The blurred figure in her vision grew larger and larger, and the distance between the two of them was closing bit by bit.
The intruder even seemed to deliberately slow down her speech rate, speaking in a tone as gentle as if she were afraid of startling something, carrying an obvious and bright pacifying intent.
Song Wenqing recalled the sobbing tone that had leaked out from the end of the sentences she had heard earlier, so when she smelled the sweet fragrance rushing toward her face, the sword in her hand ultimately did not swing down.
She chose to believe her.
Very stupid.
Song Wenqing knew that doing this was completely gambling with her own life.
However, the best timing had already been missed, and the distance between that person and her was now no more than two steps away, a place where a hand could easily reach out and pinch her neck.
Because of a momentary hesitation, she had placed herself on the edge of a cliff once again, and could only gamble that the person in front of her would not take that step forward.
But would she really not take that step forward?
A doubt arose from the bottom of her heart.
Song Wenqing looked at the person in front of her. Being closer, the appearance she could see of her became clearer.
Her hair was loose, and the style of her clothes was also strange; her attire did not resemble that of ordinary people seen in the mortal realm.
“You’re still awake… That’s great…”
There was obvious joy in her tone.
The other party maintained her posture and stopped moving, seemingly observing her condition.
“The blood… seems to be flowing out from the abdomen…”
“Pardon me, but I think I must lift your clothes to take a look… You need to stop the bleeding right now…”
“It might hurt a little bit; I need you to bear with it slightly.”
“If it really hurts too much, just say it, and I won’t continue.”
Pain?
Song Wenqing felt a bit like laughing. Her entire body hurt, already to the point of numbness.
She had exhausted all her spiritual power and pills in the great battle, and even her golden core had been dug out. Her entire cultivation base was scattered, making her a crippled person.
The only thing to be thankful for was that her golden core physique still remained, meaning her wounds could slowly recover, and she would not die just yet.
Her clothes, mixed with sticky blood, were pulled open, triggering a dense wave of pain. Song Wenqing frowned and reached out to grab the wrist of the person who was about to inspect her wound.
“Never mind.”
She spoke with great difficulty, every word squeezed out as if from her chest cavity.
It was warm.
Her fingertips happened to press right against the pulse, beating rhythmically, a strong, pulsing vitality lightly tapping against her skin.
Song Wenqing raised her eyes. Everything within her field of vision remained a blur, but she suddenly… suddenly wanted to see what the person in front of her looked like.
“If you don’t stop the bleeding, you will die.”
“Healing… is happening.”
Having spoken too hastily, Song Wenqing felt a pain in her chest, frowned, and suppressed the sweet, bloody taste rising up her throat.
“Go.”
The smell of blood was growing heavier.
If she stayed here any longer, it would definitely attract wild beasts.
“Never mind, leave first.”
Song Wenqing’s hand holding the sword trembled slightly as she struggled to prop up her body, wanting to stand up.
Seeing through this intention, Yan Zhu stepped forward in a timely manner to support her with both arms.
Whether it was a perk of being a time traveler or not, she found that her strength was much greater than before, allowing her to support a person without much effort.
“Go to… the lake.”
This sentence was already whispered in a breathy voice. Had it not been spoken right next to her ear, Yan Zhu most likely would not have heard it.
Although she felt that the little girl currently needed to stop the bleeding the most, seeing that the other party insisted, she decided to follow her lead for the time being.
Red color rippled through the clear lake water. After a brief immersion, the small patch closest to the shore was dyed red.
So it was to wash away the smell of blood on her body.
Yan Zhu thought to herself. She turned her head to look at the little girl beside her, and seeing that she still maintained that expressionless look, a trace of pity welled up in her heart.
The rest of things went much smoother.
A cave suitable for taking shelter was not far away, and inside there was even a large stone for people to lie down on.
Yan Zhu carefully supported the person onto it, noticing that the other’s condition was not as calm and collected as she portrayed; the wound on her abdomen had not healed at all, and blood continued to ooze out from time to time.
“You are still bleeding… If this goes on, you’re going to die…”
Yan Zhu’s heart beat fast, and her hands trembled slightly from the panic caused by things being out of her control.
She did not understand this world, and having previously heard the little girl say “it’s healing,” she had taken it at face value. Now, seeing the blood on the abdomen flow uncontrollably and observing the other person’s eyes closed tightly with pale lips, looking thoroughly on the verge of death, she instantly panicked.
Disorderly emotions were of no positive use at this moment.
Yan Zhu tried hard to calm her mood, reached out, and lightly and slowly lifted the clothing soaked ice-cold by the water.
“Pardon me…”
Her voice drifted into the ear.
Song Wenqing instantly realized what she was doing and could not help feeling somewhat annoyed and ashamed, yet she completely lacked the strength to stop the other party’s actions.
She moved her lips slightly, wanting to say something. Before the words could leave her mouth, fresh red blood gushed out in streams from the corners of her mouth.
Her head grew heavier and heavier, and her thoughts were churned into a messy ball.
Bleeding is not enough to kill me.
This was the last sentence that Song Wenqing choked back in her throat and failed to spit out before her consciousness sank into oblivion.
