- Chapter 8 - Married Life
This matter should be settled as soon as possible, as delays could lead to complications. Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, Wu Daoyuan had Chenyu’s dowry carried out and transported to her East Courtyard by Chuntao and her attendants. The shop’s deed was also transferred to her name at the government office, with Shen Hetang accompanying them. Jiang Chenyu, a beautiful young woman in her prime, couldn’t attend such a public affair herself.
By afternoon, everything was finally settled. Shen Hetang hadn’t expected Jiang Chenyu to act so swiftly. While they were at the government office, the young woman had already hired masons to build a high wall bisecting Jiang Manor, though the work would take a couple of days to complete. This clearly demonstrated her deep-seated resentment toward Wu Daoyuan.
“Is everything done?” Jiang Chenyu asked, flying toward Shen Hetang like a swallow as she entered the room.
“Yes, the deeds for the shop and the estate are right here,” Shen Hetang replied, handing her the documents.
Instead of taking the papers, Jiang Chenyu gazed intently at Shen Hetang, her expressive eyes slowly filling with a crystalline shimmer. With a sudden leap, she wrapped her arms around Shen Hetang’s neck, pressing her slightly chubby cheek against the cool skin of her neck. Her voice, tinged with a nasal quality, murmured, “Thank you, thank you.”
The scent, indistinguishable between roses and Chinese roses, burrowed into her nostrils. Jiang Chenyu’s lips, opening and closing as she spoke, felt like gentle kisses against Shen Hetang’s neck, sending shivers down her spine.
“Let’s talk properly. Come down first.” How could people be so different? Jiang Chenyu clung to her like a soft tofu, and Shen Hetang instinctively wrapped her arms around her waist. Wait, how did I get swayed by her?
“Thank you for coming… sniff… sob…” Now free from the beast’s clutches, Jiang Chenyu couldn’t contain her emotions, clinging tightly to Shen Hetang and refusing to let go.
Shen Hetang had initially wanted to pull her off, but the warm tears spreading across her neck stopped her. She’s just sixteen, and she’s been dealing with her stepfather alone all this time. When I was sixteen, I was still in middle school… Well, she’s upset right now. A hug won’t hurt.
“Don’t cry,” Shen Hetang said, patting Jiang Chenyu’s back soothingly. “He can’t hurt you anymore. You’re free to do whatever you want. He can’t control even a finger of yours now. If he ever tries to hurt you again, I’ll beat him to death for you, okay?”
“Pfft!” The woman, who had been feeling wronged, burst into laughter when Shen Hetang said she would beat Wu Daoyuan to death.
But some words seem to carry a magnetic force. One day, they came true, though the roles of speaker and listener were reversed.
A gentle spring rain pattered against the green leaves all night, leaving the morning air fragrant with the scent of damp earth. The high wall dividing the courtyard after the separation had been completed, splitting the rectangular space into two perfect squares, a clear boundary between the two households.
Jiang Chenyu reopened the main gate. With enough silver, rebuilding a gate only took a few days. The west wing remained eerily quiet, showing no signs of activity for days, as if its occupant had truly been injured.
With all the urgent matters settled, Jiang Chenyu and Shen Hetang found themselves with time to spare. Freed from daily worries, they began to enjoy a leisurely pace of life. Jiang Chenyu’s favorite pastime was dressing up beautifully, twirling before her husband, and then personally preparing nourishing soups for him in the kitchen.
Shen Hetang spent her days reading books, trying to quickly understand this world. At night, people here went to bed as soon as it got dark, but they didn’t fall asleep right away. Lately, Jiang Chenyu had been clinging to her more and more, and Shen Hetang knew it was only a matter of time before her secret was exposed.
But she couldn’t reveal that she was a woman yet. For the past few nights, she’d been having strange dreams: ashen faces in the freezing northwest wind; a desolate border town; lazy soldiers smoking, drinking, and fighting. Then the scene would shift to a jade-faced young general in gleaming armor, riding a tall warhorse. The images played like a film, frame by frame, yet remained blurry and indistinct. She tried to make out the general’s face, but he always wore a mask.
Instinct told her these dreams were connected to the original owner of this body, but the fragments were too scattered to confirm their truth. Even if they were real, what could she do? She was now just an ordinary person with some martial arts skills, unable to shoulder the burdens of her predecessor. It was best to stay hidden and observe quietly for now.
The first night she had these dreams, she woke up in a cold sweat, terrified by some unknown scene. She sat up, frozen in place for a long time. Jiang Chenyu seized the opportunity to wipe her sweat and pull her into a gentle embrace, patting her softly. When Shen Hetang didn’t object or resist, Jiang Chenyu grew bolder and bolder.
At night, she had to hold Chenyu’s hand to fall asleep, and sometimes Chenyu would even press close to her in her thin nightgown. Chenyu probably thought she was just a clueless blockhead, only capable of tossing her a thin blanket. Here was a beautiful woman trying every trick in the book to get close to her, like a delicate flower bud with hair as smooth as silk and eyes that could send sparks flying. If Chenyu were a man, she had probably have experienced the full meaning of “alluring charm” and “jade-like body sprawled languidly” that very night.
But even as a woman, she couldn’t stand having this tender, radiant girl deliberately teasing her every night. On their huge bed, it was always the same game: Chenyu chasing her, her trying to escape, but with no chance of getting away.
She’d wrap the restless girl tightly in the thin blanket to keep her still. Giving her one hand was the limit; thankfully, Chenyu knew when to stop and would stay quiet for a while, content with just holding her hand.
She needed to find a job soon. Being stuck together day and night like this was a disaster waiting to happen.
