- Chapter 7 - Afraid of Thunder
Ming Shu stood rooted to the spot, the security guards in black blocking her path.
“I apologize, please return inside,” the guard repeated.
The rain grew heavier, and streaks of lightning flashed across Ming Shu’s glasses. Her knuckles paled as she gripped the handle of her umbrella tightly. “I still have things to do,” the tall beauty whispered, her voice so faint she seemed to be speaking only to herself.
“What did you say?”
The torrential rain hammered against the eaves, knocking entire yellow camellia blossoms from their stems into the mud.
“Nothing. I’ll go back,” Ming Shu said. She removed her glasses and methodically wiped the water droplets from the lenses. The security guard breathed a sigh of relief and returned to his post.
Inside the bedroom, a frail girl sat in a wheelchair by the bed, draped in an oversized black trench coat that clearly didn’t belong to her. Su Chuiyun rubbed her nose and sneezed. As a “devoted little lover,” how could she possibly let her benefactor leave in such a downpour?
Su Chuiyun twirled the diamond ring her benefactor had given her and placed Ming Shu’s business card in a vanity drawer. Seeing Ming Shu walking back through the courtyard, her smile grew even more “attentive.”
“Sister Ming Shu, come and sleep for a while.”
Su Chuiyun maneuvered herself toward the bed with a tea-scented (manipulative) charm, patting the space beside her. Ming Shu’s hair was damp with rain, and her entire body carried the earthy, metallic scent of a storm.
Ming Shu tugged at the corner of her mouth in a faint smile. “You’re a big girl now; you shouldn’t always cling to your sister.”
She had no intention of getting into bed; on the contrary, her posture was wary. Ming Shu’s gaze fell upon Su Chuiyun’s clear, smoky-gray eyes and the carbon fiber splints fixing her legs, the very picture of fragility.
But Ming Shu hadn’t forgotten. Five years ago today, during a similar thunderstorm, she had been locked in a basement by her adoptive parents for coming out. On that same day, the person she loved most sent her a message to break up.
Thinking of this, a shadow crossed Ming Shu’s eyes. Does Su Chuiyun have no heart? Has she forgotten everything that happened?
The girl on the bed tilted her head innocently. “Really now, your clothes are soaked. You should be more careful, or you’ll catch a cold.”
With that, Su Chuiyun supported herself against the wall and stood up, slowly limping toward Ming Shu. Ming Shu, the woman who had struck it rich abroad, remained composed even when drenched. However, that composure shattered the moment Su Chuiyun’s fingers brushed against her chest.
The “poor little blind girl” fumbled against her, her voice soft and delicate: “Sister, why did you leave?”
“Go back to bed,” Ming Shu scolded. “Don’t move, I’ll help you back.”
The girl flinched as if hurt by the harsh tone. “Sister, are you angry with me? I didn’t mean to stop you. It’s raining so hard outside and I’m scared… I didn’t want you to go.”
Su Chuiyun, her mind full of little schemes, greedily watched Ming Shu’s suppressed irritation. Even though Ming Shu’s brow was furrowed from the touch, her reddened ears gave away her true reaction.
A boom of thunder shook the sky, and Su Chuiyun trembled in Ming Shu’s arms. Weak, helpless but desperate for contact.
Ming Shu thought: I think I smell the scent of a ‘Green Tea’ (manipulator).
Su Chuiyun managed to strip Ming Shu of her outer wet clothes, and the two crawled under the covers just as they had when they were children. Ming Shu wanted to push her away in a fit of embarrassed rage, but her touch softened the moment her hand met Su Chuiyun’s thin shoulders.
“Have you forgotten?” Ming Shu’s voice was strained, bordering on tears.
In the dim bedroom, Ming Shu tried to block out the memory of that cold, dusty basement and the old mirror she had huddled next to, staring at her own battered reflection. If she hadn’t come out to her parents… she often wondered if life would be different if she hadn’t loved Su Chuiyun.
“Don’t hold me. Just sleep, it’s late,” Ming Shu turned away, pulling Su Chuiyun’s wandering hands off her waist. Sometimes Ming Shu felt she was pathetic. Su Chuiyun clearly didn’t love her, yet she couldn’t bring herself to refuse her.
Thunder and lightning broke the silence of the dark room. The red glow of the lightning reflected in the full-length mirror. In the darkness, Su Chuiyun’s hands became restless again, sliding onto Ming Shu’s waist.
“I’m scared. Sister, hold me while we sleep.”
With every clap of thunder, Ming Shu’s body shuddered. Her pillow was becoming damp with tears. Su Chuiyun pulled Ming Shu closer into her arms, her voice seductive in Ming Shu’s ear:
“You’re afraid of thunder too, aren’t you? Is that why you didn’t want to stay?”
Ming Shu remained silent, though a small sob escaped her throat. It was hard to imagine the powerful businesswoman Ming Shu curling up like a kitten in bed.
“Don’t move… don’t come any closer…” Ming Shu pleaded softly.
Su Chuiyun held her benefactor from behind, her fingers tracing Ming Shu’s abdomen. She has abs; they feel nice.
Suddenly, the phone on the nightstand buzzed, breaking the atmosphere. Ming Shu reached out and unlocked the screen. A stinging text message appeared:
Adoptive Mother: Come back tomorrow. Your brother misses you.
Ming Shu squinted at the message and put the phone face down without replying.
“I like you so much, Sister. Will you come and stay with me more often?”
“Don’t you think I’m useless?” Ming Shu whispered with a sob. Her eyes caught the reflection in the mirror; she had been terrified of mirrors ever since those three days in the basement.
“For someone as amazing as you, being afraid of thunder isn’t a weakness it’s a highlight. it makes you more approachable,” the girl whispered sweet, heart racing words.
As Ming Shu began to relax, she realized Su Chuiyun’s hands were still wandering. Her fingers reached the edge of Ming Shu’s undergarments, playing with the elastic band. Snap… the elastic hit her skin with a slight sting.
Ming Shu’s face flushed instantly.
“Oh, I found a bow. What a cute style.”
“You asked me to stay because you were ‘scared,’ yet you don’t seem afraid of the thunder at all! You…”
Ming Shu tried to grab her hand in embarrassment. The touch on her stomach made her skin crawl with a restless sensation. “Mm… stop…” Her eyes grew misty. It was her first time being teased like this, and by a blind girl no less. Not just a blind girl, her ex-girlfriend.
Another crash of thunder. Ming Shu looked at Su Chuiyun with pleading eyes, forgetting that the girl couldn’t see her or how provocative she looked in that moment.
“I am afraid of thunder,” Su Chuiyun whispered in her ear. “But because Sister is here, I’m not afraid anymore. I’ve lived in darkness for years; you missed so many of my nights. Shouldn’t you make up for them now?”
Ming Shu was reaching her limit, but Su Chuiyun wasn’t actually trying to “finish” anything. She was clearly just teasing.
As the night deepened, Su Chuiyun having successfully “pacified” her benefactor, fell into a peaceful sleep in Ming Shu’s fragrant embrace. Ming Shu felt the restless hands finally go still. Her own body was burning with heat.
“A-Yun?” Ming Shu whispered. Only steady breathing answered her.
Ming Shu: “…”
Fine. She could never truly stay mad at her. Ming Shu carefully climbed out of bed, making sure not to wake the sleeping girl. She crept into the bathroom, and as the water began to splash, she closed her eyes, filled with a mixture of grievance and longing.
