- Chapter 2 - Soft Rice (Eating Soft Rice)
No one knew that Ming Shu was also standing at the entrance of the orthopedic inpatient building.
Tucked inside her pocket, her hand tightly gripped a square velvet ring box.
It was something she had intended to give to Su Chuiyun. If the younger girl accepted it, Ming Shu wouldn’t go through with any future blind dates.
From a distance, Ming Shu saw Song Xi standing ahead, delicately carrying a fruit basket.
Ming Shu’s beautiful phoenix eyes cast downward as she moved further into the shadows.
“President Ming,” the young secretary behind her said, “I’ve found out. Miss Su has a fracture in her right leg and just underwent surgery yesterday afternoon.”
Ming Shu glanced at the thick stack of medical records, they were as thick as a one yuan coin standing on its edge.
Her eyes grew deeper, and her finger unconsciously brushed against the bite wound at the corner of her mouth.
“All these years, she…”
The secretary whispered, “Five years ago, after you went abroad, Miss Su suddenly fell ill and lost her sight. Song Xi and Miss Su were close, and they likely got together around that time.”
To say they “got together” was an exaggeration; they simply had frequent contact. After all, who could refuse a rich albeit blind heiress?
Ming Shu’s hand trembled as she picked up the top medical record. Her heart hammered against her ribs.
Behind her rimless glasses, a layer of mist filled her eyes. She almost lost the strength to hold herself up, feeling as though she might faint.
Over these years, what exactly had Su Chuiyun gone through?
Yesterday, she hadn’t understood the situation at all. She had simply carried the drunken Su Chuiyun to the hotel. A waiter mentioned she had left something behind, and when Ming Shu had someone retrieve it, it turned out to be a folded wheelchair.
If she had known, she would never have let her recklessly break up and move abroad alone.
The intense emotion hidden in the depths of Ming Shu’s eyes turned into a poison-tipped blade the moment she spotted Song Xi.
Sensing something, Song Xi turned. “And you are?”
Ming Shu replied, “I’m here for Su Chuiyun. Move, please.”
Her upbringing prevented her from using vulgar words, but she used her shoulder to forcefully shove past Song Xi, pushing her aside.
A flash of disgust crossed Song Xi’s eyes. “Tsk, she really has a lot of people around her.”
“You’re Ming Shu, aren’t you? Chuiyun mentioned you. She said she had a thing with you once, but that you were too serious and boring. Other than childhood stories, all you talk about is work, no sense of romance at all.”
Ming Shu stopped in her tracks, narrowing her eyes as she looked back. The atmosphere was thick with tension.
“What did you say?”
Inside the Ward
Su Chuiyun watched as the nurse inserted an indwelling needle into the back of her hand. The thick needle pierced through the skin and into the vein.
The nurse said, “Don’t move your right hand, and don’t let it get wet.”
Sitting on the pale hospital bed was a slender young woman. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her smoky gray eyes stared forward without focus. She held a half-eaten apple in her hand.
Apple juice trickled through her fingers, the sweet and sour scent cutting through the smell of disinfectant.
The blind girl turned her head, nodding toward the direction of the nurse’s voice. “Thank you for the trouble.”
Her soft, clear voice made the nurse turn back, her cheeks flushing involuntarily.
The young nurse hurried away, but couldn’t resist stealing one last glance at this overly beautiful woman before leaving.
Su Chuiyun smiled at her.
The nurse: !
Chen Yue clicked her tongue, thinking that Su Chuiyun was a true “heart arsonist.”
Being beautiful without realizing it was the most lethal trait of all.
“I said you can’t go in!” the head nurse shouted in the hallway. “Take one more step and I’m calling security!”
Su Chuiyun tilted her head to listen to the commotion. The hallway was noisy, accompanied by Song Xi’s sobbing voice.
“Why are you stopping me but not her?”
Song Xi’s peach-blossom eyes, brimming with tears, looked at the head nurse. “I’m the girlfriend of the patient in Bed 12. I just want to see her, just one look.”
As Song Xi spoke, her body trembled, a picture of fragile pity.
The head nurse wavered, seeing Song Xi’s “Green Tea” act. If she had tried to force her way in, it would be one thing, but this tearful performance was making a scene.
Patients from other rooms poked their heads out to watch; the situation was chaotic.
Seeing Song Xi reach the door of the ward, Ming Shu, standing further back, felt a chill in her heart.
Is this the type of person my “little friend” likes?
She stood quietly in the distance and gave the head nurse an apologetic smile.
“I’m sorry for the trouble.”
Ming Shu was dressed in low-profile luxury brands, carrying a bag that cost more than the head nurse’s annual salary.
She stood tall and elegant, her beautiful fingers currently encased in leather gloves.
The head nurse quickly said it was no problem. “Are you here for…?”
“The patient in Bed 12, Su Chuiyun.”
The head nurse’s expression stiffened for a moment. The patient in Bed 12 had gone missing right after surgery, which had given her a cold sweat.
Ming Shu was granted entry. From a distance, she saw the “Green Tea” girl in the white dress standing at the door, carrying a heavy fruit basket, looking apologetic and concerned as she reached out to touch Su Chuiyun’s arm.
Sensing her presence, Su Chuiyun shifted her body. “I need quiet rest right now.”
Su Chuiyun’s voice was cold, so cold it practically dropped icicles. She had zero favorable feelings toward the original female lead of the novel.
Originally, she had just been reading a novel at night to pass the time. She noticed the villain had the same job she did in real life, but she never expected to wake up having transmigrated into that villain’s body.
Song Xi’s hand grabbed empty air, leaving her standing awkwardly.
“The fruit basket has been delivered. You can leave now.”
“Chuiyun, you’re angry with me.”
Su Chuiyun looked at her coldly. Those hollow, smoky gray eyes had no focus, yet they made one feel a chill from the bottom of their heart.
“How my leg got broken, you don’t know?”
Song Xi bit her lower lip. “I didn’t mean to. I just wanted to joke with you. Chuiyun, don’t blame me, okay? I can compensate you.”
“And… didn’t you go to the bar a few days ago hoping to run into me? I know everything. My heart aches for you.”
In the past, the original Su Chuiyun would have fallen for this.
Song Xi had a very pleasant voice, the kind of soft, sweet “little girl” voice that both men and women liked.
Su Chuiyun: “You intentionally caused me to step into empty air. In other words, you are the culprit.”
Song Xi’s face turned pale instantly. She had no idea that the person who used to fawn over her would suddenly change so completely.
“No, it’s not like that, you’ve misunderstood… Su Chuiyun, do you not believe me anymore?”
The nurses outside saw this and whispered to each other. “No wonder. How could a blind patient be so careless as to fall down the stairs?”
“How excessive.”
“Stop talking, Bed 9 is ringing the bell.”
After the nurses left, several aunties in the neighboring beds watched from afar and gossiped. “That girl in the white dress looks so pure, but who knew she had such a black heart?”
“Girls these days are so wicked, bullying a blind person. Truly shameless.”
“Get her out of here, she’s bad luck.”
“Acting all teary for a blind person to see? If my leg wasn’t broken, I’d roll up my sleeves and give that shameless girl a slap.”
Ming Shu felt disgusted watching from the door. Her face was dark as she watched Su Chuiyun sitting there quietly in her hospital gown, showing no joy or sorrow.
So my little friend likes this type.
Ming Shu pondered to herself that maybe she could learn…
“Get out.”
Su Chuiyun said to Song Xi.
Under everyone’s gaze, Song Xi’s face turned white with embarrassment. She was used to acting innocent, and everyone usually yielded to her no matter what she did wrong.
She had no idea that this rich, blind heiress would actually fall down the stairs. She didn’t do it on purpose.
Song Xi looked aggrieved, but Su Chuiyun who was pretending to be blind didn’t care at all.
Song Xi couldn’t save face. “I’ll leave first. We’re still friends, right?”
Su Chuiyun looked away dismissively. “Get out.”
Song Xi: “…”
Before leaving, Song Xi shot a chilling glance at Ming Shu, treating this well-dressed woman as a rival trying to get a piece of the pie.
The ward became quiet again.
Chen Yue looked at the door at Ming Shu, who hadn’t left.
“You’re back in the country,” Chen Yue stepped forward to greet her. “You’ve grown into quite a young woman.”
Chen Yue knew Ming Shu and Su Chuiyun once had a relationship that ended bitterly after Su Chuiyun initiated a breakup. She awkwardly shut her mouth.
Before leaving, Chen Yue closed the door, blocking out the prying eyes from outside.
Only two people remained in the room.
Ming Shu walked toward the bed with a complex expression. Through her rimless glasses, she looked at the thin girl sitting on the bed. Her smoky gray eyes were unfocused, staring straight at the white wall, while her hands held an apple covered in juice.
“I’m sorry.”
Ming Shu’s heart throbbed with unbearable pain, and even her voice carried a note of suffering.
“I shouldn’t have left you yesterday.”
That day at the hotel, she thought the younger girl didn’t want her to touch her, but she hadn’t realized Su Chuiyun couldn’t see.
She also hadn’t realized the reason the girl wore excessively long pants was to hide the instability of her legs.
Su Chuiyun’s unfocused eyes moved. She could actually see, and she could see that the person in front of her was crying.
“Don’t cry.” Su Chuiyun reached out to grab her sleeve. Her hands were sticky with apple juice, and worried she would dirty Ming Shu’s clothes, she hesitantly pulled her hand back halfway.
In Ming Shu’s eyes, this looked like a blind person fumbling in the air.
Her heart ached even more.
Ignoring the mess on Su Chuiyun’s hands, she pulled off her leather gloves and grabbed her hand.
“Sister (Jiejie).”
Su Chuiyun’s voice was raspy, containing three parts helplessness, three parts urgency, and four parts fragility.
Ming Shu froze. “What did you call me?”
“Sister.” She threw herself into the older woman’s embrace like a tired bird returning to its nest. “Sister, I missed you so much.”
Su Chuiyun recalled how the original character addressed her in the novel.
She felt a slight sense of guilt for “bullying” her like this, but a moment later, she was dazed by the beauty in front of her.
A single tear rolled down Ming Shu’s cold face, landing heavily on the white bedsheet.
She silently wiped away her tears and managed a beautiful smile.
Five years. She finally heard her “little friend” call her “Sister” again.
The two were only three years apart not a huge age gap but this child had followed her around calling her “Sister” since they were little.
Their families were neighbors; they grew up together and went to the same primary school. By chance, they were even in the same building. The younger girl would secretly share cookies with her after class.
Su Chuiyun was a lover of beauty. She quietly and greedily admired the sight of the beauty weeping. This is the person whose “soft rice” I’m going to eat for the rest of my life.
Wealthy, gentle, and loves her.
Was the original host crazy to be with the female lead?
Before transmigrating, Su Chuiyun had worked hard drawing blueprints and going to construction sites, even falling and hurting her leg. The pittance she earned as a designer wouldn’t even cover an ICU bill.
Soft rice really is fragrant.
Neither of them knew that Song Xi, who had just left, had circled back to the ward door.
The girl in the white dress no longer looked simple or innocent; her eyes were full of calculation.
She wanted to see how Su Chuiyun, who supposedly only loved her, would treat that wooden woman.
Avoiding the passing nurses, she peeked through the glass pane on the door.
Suddenly, Ming Shu went to take the browning apple and the business card pressed beneath it from Su Chuiyun’s hand.
Ming Shu’s business card had been kept very carefully; it wasn’t stained by the apple juice.
The moment she saw the card, Ming Shu felt a sting in her heart.
Her little friend couldn’t see, yet she had still protected her business card so well.
The apple juice on her hands was uncomfortable. “Let go, Sister will wipe them for you.”
The blind beauty obediently let go. “Sister, are you leaving? Don’t go.”
“Don’t take the card either. I’ll have someone save it for me.”
“I’m not leaving. I’m getting a wet wipe,” Ming Shu said softly, eyes downcast. “Should I save the number on your phone?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Song Xi watched as that woman who looked the epitome of abstinence and formality leaned over, tucked a stray hair back, and extended her tongue to lightly lick the apple juice off the back of Su Chuiyun’s hand.
Ming Shu’s tongue tasted the sweet and sour flavor. Her “A-Yun’s” skin was tender, tenderer than the apple. She liked it very much.
Ming Shu was taking advantage of the fact that the girl “couldn’t see.” In her heart, she knew this behavior was sinful, but she couldn’t help herself.
“Sister?”
“Don’t move. I’m warming up the wipe.”
Immediately after, she covered the spot with the wet wipe, pretending nothing had happened.
Su Chuiyun: ?!
I saw it! How bold!
Song Xi: ?
What a high-level move!
