- Chapter 32 - The Turnabout
Oh, bloody hell! The forum post has been deleted!!! Does this mean that post was fake all along?!
What got deleted? Hold on, you lot above! Hand over my popcorn and tell me what I missed!!
Gosh, it’s really gone. Mama Red stepped in personally to ban it. Oh my days, was it actually fake?
Here’s the link to the announcement check it out quick. Mama Red truly nuked the thread. A thousand miles of red tape!
Nuked thread? Marked as slander? So Zhu Zhengwen was telling the truth?
You’re joking, right? I’ve been arguing for ages and it turns out it was slander? Are the admins having a laugh?! That post was up for so long, and tagging Palace Maid Yellow didn’t do a thing. We did all the legwork, and now you delete the thread?
Manually @Mama Red. Don’t mention it.
Hah? Are you taking the mick? Is the admin actually dead? If you hadn’t let that post float around for so long, I wouldn’t have believed it and gone to start a row. I don’t care; my swearing isn’t my fault, it’s the dead admin’s fault.
Agreed. I’m not apologising. Who asked them to leave it up for so long without deleting it? They deserve the abuse!
Major reality check. My face is swollen from the slap, but I won’t apologise. @Mama Red, you were derelict in your duties, that’s not my problem.
…
Manager Ma stood by the desk, feeling stifled as he watched a newly created thread rocket to the homepage, filled entirely with users shifting the blame onto the management.
“Post the announcement,” Manager Ma sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose.
Following the “Mama Red nukes thread, Palace Maid Yellow derelict in duty” fiasco, another massive official announcement pinned at the top titled “Palace Maid Yellow Dismissed” began to trend red. The paid trolls that Zhou Cheng had struggled to buy were once again losing control of the narrative.
The anger of the vast majority of netizens had been somewhat quelled by the forum’s handling of the slanderous post. Since the officials had stamped it as a fabrication, and considering the platform held the streamers’ real household registration and address details, they must have verified it in the backend: Gu Yangyang was indeed not from N City.
So, in the span of a single day, the black water that seemed destined to drown him began to flow backward. All the discourse turned irreversibly toward conspiracy theories about industry competitors, leaving the paid trolls utterly bewildered.
To be honest, in all their years working as trolls, they had never encountered such a difficult job. It felt like the heavens themselves were working against them.
They had posted fake threads for years, but this was the first time the official platform had impatiently rushed out to debunk a rumour before the victim even had a chance to defend themselves!
That was simply too lucky.
The trolls rubbed their greasy keyboards and lamented inwardly, but they had to eat their pot noodles and soldier on.
After successfully reporting Administrator Wang and getting him fired, the office atmosphere was as festive as New Year’s Eve. When Administrator Wang was around, he had tormented the staff relentlessly. So, the moment he walked out with his box of belongings, the employees disregarded the rules, cracked open beers, and passed them around.
In a corner, a female employee quietly approached the new junior staff member.
“Hey, Xiao Cheng, how come our reports were useless for years, but the moment you reported him, it worked? You know, I told you before, Administrator Wang had people above him. Even if he’s been stripped of his position this time, he probably won’t let it go easily.”
The female employee hid her face behind a folder, speaking in a hushed whisper.
The new employee who had reported Administrator Wang gave a pretentious cough. This female colleague had helped him a lot with the report, so he decided not to hide it anymore.
“I’ll tell you, but don’t tell anyone else. Actually, it’s not a big deal.” The employee glanced around, then turned his head, struggling to suppress the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“CEO Cheng is my dad! Originally, I planned to climb the ladder step by step on my own, but Administrator Wang kept deliberately suppressing me. Even though I have genuine talent, it was no use. So, I just asked my dad to contact Manager Ma and sort him out!”
“You’re CEO Cheng’s…!” The female employee covered her mouth in shock to stifle a scream, then smoothed her breathing before whispering again.
“Ahem, you’re the Young Master Cheng? Oh my mum, let me cling to your thigh!”
“Hehe, easy, easy. As long as you work hard, I’ll ask my dad to pay more attention to you!”
Young Master Cheng thought his dad was the sole hero in this. He couldn’t have imagined that some things were just serendipitous. Even if his dad hadn’t intervened, General Manager Xu, who had a precious darling taking the college entrance exams at home, wouldn’t have tolerated Administrator Wang’s continued insolence.
So, some things really are just coincidences upon coincidences.
While the officials were busy debunking rumours, Zhou Cheng was so angry he couldn’t catch his breath.
“Hello? Master? I can’t reach Zhu Zhengwen. Are you sure your spell is effective?” Zhou Cheng, who had developed two stress blisters on his mouth from rage, couldn’t rest easy and called the Master again.
“If it wasn’t effective, would you still be alive and whole today?! What? Are you questioning my magic? Hmph! Ignorant child! Stop calling! This old man has lost his hedgehog and is extremely annoyed! If you keep blathering on, don’t blame this old man for breaking the contract!”
The voice on the other end was an elderly man in a foul temper. Zhou Cheng knew he couldn’t afford to offend these mysterious masters, but ever since he started targeting Gu Yangyang again, he had felt perpetually restless. Although his own curse of the vengeful spirit had been lifted, Gu Yangyang was like a mutated fishbone stuck in his throat extremely uncomfortable.
It was strange. Before, no matter who he smeared, it was always smooth sailing without error, and the results were impeccable. But since he started targeting Gu Yangyang, nothing ever ended well. Things would always inexplicably turn around and exonerate him. He knew Gu Yangyang didn’t have the capability to clear his own name, but this feeling that the heavens were fighting him made him feel constantly on edge.
Every time a smear campaign gained some traction, it would be interrupted by all sorts of luck, resulting in his efforts merely feeding Gu Yangyang more traffic. Look at it now—Gu Yangyang almost had ten million fans! The top streamer in the food section only had eight million!
Even knowing that many of them were hate-followers, Zhou Cheng was still unwilling to accept it!!!
No, he absolutely could not let Gu Yangyang turn this around! If he did, who knew how he would trample on Zhou Cheng in return!
Zhou Cheng threw his phone onto the table, stubbed out his thirty-fifth cigarette, and hurriedly went to contact the trolls.
At the Dai Residence
“It’s good it didn’t bite you. I heard hedgehogs can carry rabies,” Gu Jiaoyang said, taking the opportunity to stroke Mr Dai’s hand thoroughly. Although a cultivator in the Qi Refining stage didn’t have much spiritual energy, he absorbed the pure essence of the sun and moon daily. For an ordinary person, it was a great tonic.
Of course, for the little white hedgehog, who had stumbled through life without finding a proper cultivation method, it was a delicacy so tempting it almost made him weep.
Delicious!!! Boss, ahhh, put me down, I want to eat!!!
Held by the scruff of his neck by Gu Jiaoyang, the little white hedgehog flailed his short legs. His two black beady eyes stared at Gu Jiaoyang’s hand, which was transmitting spiritual energy, practically flashing red with hunger.
“Why did it suddenly lunge at you?” Dai Gucan’s palm had been pricked, but the skin wasn’t broken, so he was fine. He looked at the small animal dangling from Gu Jiaoyang’s hand with a hint of anger. No matter how different this white hedgehog was from other animals, or how legendary it might be, it was still a wild animal from the outdoors and inevitably carried germs.
“Let’s release it back to Dragon Guard Slope.” Dai Gucan took the small hedgehog from Gu Jiaoyang, handed it back to the nanny, and pulled his little boyfriend back to the living room to wash his hands thoroughly with soap.
Only when the little white hedgehog was wrapped in clothes by the grumbling nanny and driven to Dragon Guard Slope for release did he let out a squeak and burst into tears.
His… such a big Boss… gone!!!
He was just there, right in front of my eyes! So fragrant! Such a big one!
Gone!
Squeak squeak squeak!!!!
The little white hedgehog kicked away the fruit the nanny had left behind, curled himself into a ball under a tree, and squeaked endlessly in sorrow.
Humans are so bad! I finally found a Boss I could mooch food and drink off!!! Especially that man next to the Boss, even worse!!!
No, I have to go back!
If a hedgehog doesn’t look out for himself, heaven and earth will destroy him. If I let such a fragrant Boss escape, how long will I have to sleep in the wind and eat dew?
Go back, go back!
The little white hedgehog scratched his face with his hind leg, wiped away the non-existent tears from under his black beady eyes, and righteously decided he had to sneak back and cling to the Boss’s thigh for dear life!
…
Ever since Dai Gucan had inexplicably used the strawberry-scented hand wash that one time, the ‘Empress Pine’ brand next to it had fallen out of favour, never to be graced by the royal touch again. However, now that Dai Gucan was bringing Gu Jiaoyang to wash his hands, he naturally didn’t dare use the pink hand wash in front of him.
Gu Jiaoyang extended his hands, letting Dai Gucan lather them up for him. He stared at the half-used strawberry hand wash nearby and suddenly realised.
No wonder I always smell strawberries when we eat. So, Mr Dai likes using such a girly hand wash.
“Are we still going to see Little Red?” Gu Jiaoyang held out his small, fair hands, standing obediently while Mr Dai dried them for him.
“Let’s go. Don’t worry, the nanny has sent the hedgehog back to Dragon Guard Slope. Meeting one of the Five Immortals is a good thing; it brings good luck.”
Dai Gucan finished drying his hands and placed the towel back on the rail. However, glancing at his own towel on the other side, he shifted Gu Jiaoyang’s towel to hang right next to his. Although they weren’t the same model, hanging them neatly side-by-side made them look somewhat like a couple’s set—one large, one small.
Mm, it’s time to buy matching sets.
Having placed the towels, Dai Gucan, who rarely concerned himself with household items, made a mental note to have the nanny replace everything in the house with matching pairs.
“Good luck? Hahaha, Mr Dai, trusting the Five Immortals isn’t as good as trusting Yangyang. Although we cultivators go against the heavens, you must know that the spokesperson for the Heavenly Dao is still humanity. The Heavenly Dao will protect us until the Thunder Tribulation. Plus, we accumulate merit by vanquishing demons and exorcising evil, so our own fortune is incomparable to ordinary people! So, Mr Dai should stay close to Yangyang. Yangyang guarantees your luck will explode!”
Gu Jiaoyang took Mr Dai’s hand and squeezed it, blinking his eyes with a mischievous expression.
“Mm.” Out of all those words, Dai Gucan only heard that his little boyfriend wanted him to stay close, so his tone softened, delighted by his boyfriend’s clinginess.
“Wait, Thunder Tribulation? Is it dangerous?” Recovering from the sweet moment, Dai Gucan paused while holding Gu Jiaoyang’s hand, voicing his worry directly.
“It’s fine. For those of us with Chaos Spirit Roots, the Thunder Tribulation only happens at the Golden Core stage. Given the spiritual energy in this world, I probably won’t have the chance to be struck by lightning even when I’m an old man.” Gu Jiaoyang wasn’t afraid of the tribulation. Firstly, he had already survived it once. Secondly, the spiritual energy in this world was far inferior to his original one; reaching the Qi Refining stage probably already made one a top-tier martial artist here.
“Once my cultivation base is stable and I have energy to spare, I’ll teach this method to you too, Mr Dai. If you can cultivate as well, you can live for many more years to keep Yangyang company!”
This was the truth. Gu Jiaoyang had planned this for a while. Now that he had confessed his cultivation abilities, once his level stabilized, he intended to guide Mr Dai in drawing Qi into his body.
“We’ll see.” Dai Gucan was a bit dazed. He had been so focused on dating that he hadn’t truly considered that he was fundamentally different from his little boyfriend. A cultivator’s lifespan was unknown, whereas he was already thirty.
Thankfully, his little boyfriend was a genuine eighteen-year-old. Otherwise, he might have really believed Gu Jiaoyang was fifty or sixty, as written in books.
Although Dai Gucan read fantasy novels, he wasn’t particularly interested in the whole “An immortal touched my head, granting me immortality” concept. Ultimately, he was someone who had received thirty years of socialist education. Even if he believed Gu Jiaoyang’s words, deep down, he treated the matter of cultivation as something that went in one ear and out the other.
“Let’s go see Little Red.”
