- Chapter 31 - The White Immortal
“Director Ma?” Manager Wang, having straightened his attire, stepped into Director Ma’s office. Although he was unsure exactly which of his misdeeds had been exposed, he remained outwardly fearless.
“This is tea from Haijiang… Director Ma, I noticed you’ve been working rather hard lately, so I brought a little something for you.” Manager Wang placed a large, ornate package of tea onto the desk, ensuring the gilded, archaic calligraphy was facing upwards. It read: A Thousand Years of National Tribute, Imperial Grant from Haijiang.
Director Ma kept his head down, his eyes fixed on the lengthy document on his computer screen. It detailed every single one of Manager Wang’s exploits with such clarity that no rebuttal was possible.
The tea on the desk was worth its weight in gold; a single gram cost hundreds of yuan. It was currently the trendy status symbol among the upper class of Changjing.
“Take it away.” Director Ma’s expression was thunderous as he picked up a tablet and tossed it across the desk, hitting Manager Wang. “Have a proper look. Do you have anything to say for yourself?”
Having occupied a high position for a long time, Director Ma acted with swift decisiveness. He had never tolerated incompetence; in his eyes, petty theft and laziness were cardinal sins against the company, let alone this brazen abuse of power to line one’s own pockets.
“This… I…” Manager Wang caught the tablet. A mere glance at the screen sent him into a cold sweat. He stammered, unsure how to talk his way out of this. However, he quickly reminded himself that he wasn’t some powerless, unconnected ordinary employee. He straightened his back, his voice regaining some stability.
“Director Ma, you must see clearly! This is an injustice! I have worked conscientiously for this company for so many years, climbing the ranks step by step. How would I dare do such things?” Manager Wang hurriedly skimmed the data. Seeing that it was merely a trivial matter concerning that anchor, he breathed a sigh of relief. His skin thickened instantly as he began to cry foul.
“Injustice?! You have the nerve to say that! The facts are right there! The forum has clear regulations prohibiting the spreading of rumours and baseless information. The dangers of cyberbullying are posted on every single one of your desks! If you didn’t do it, were you blind to the four thousand reports sitting unprocessed in the backend?!”
“What does your employee handbook say? Hm?! Threads like this aren’t allowed to appear on the forum in the first place! They must be deleted within four hours! And you? were you too full of food to see straight?! How long has this been hanging on the homepage? How do you think netizens view our forum now? How do you think our competitors will use this against us?!”
Seeing that Manager Wang showed not a shred of remorse and instead looked as though he felt entirely justified, Director Ma’s fury boiled over. He grabbed a notebook from his desk and hurled it at Manager Wang’s head, unleashing a crackling barrage of scolding like a string of firecrackers.
“I was only thinking of the company’s traffic…” Manager Wang, having enjoyed smooth sailing for so many years, felt a surge of resentment at being hit in the head with a notebook and scolded so viciously. However, he knew better than to explode right there and then, so he temporarily swallowed his anger.
“Thinking of the company? Bullshit! You know perfectly well what you were thinking of! Today, for your own performance figures, you disregard internet laws and morality, and you ignore company regulations. Tomorrow, for your own future, you’ll be accepting bribes! Selling out the company!!!”
Director Ma had been in senior management for a long time; he knew naturally that people of this nature usually ended up as parasites within the company. Consequently, he didn’t save Manager Wang any face. Seeing that the man had no intention of humbly repenting, Ma made a call right in front of him, stripping Manager Wang of his duties and banishing him to the small staff office where he had started out.
“I’ll keep you on for a few days. Once you’ve sorted this mess out, take your things and get out. Our company doesn’t welcome people like you. Go seek better prospects elsewhere!” Director Ma pinched the bridge of his nose, refusing to listen to any more of Manager Wang’s excuses, and signaled his secretary to throw him out.
Kicked out of the office, Manager Wang’s face was dark. He wished he could go back in and teach Director Ma a lesson, but in the end, Ma held the higher rank…
No, I struggled so hard to become a manager. How can I go back to suffering in that cramped little corner?
“Hello? Big Brother? It’s me… Ah, Big Brother, you have to save me…”
Looking wretched, Manager Wang checked to ensure no one was nearby before slinking into a corner to call his brother. Now that he had been removed from his post, only his big brother could help him turn the tables!
While things were turbulent inside Orange Blossom, Gu Jiaoyang, having finished his live stream, had already enjoyed dinner with Mr Dai, who was home from work.
“I want to go and see Little Red. Will you come with me, Mr Dai?” Gu Jiaoyang sat on the sofa, rubbing his tummy. He took Dai Gucan’s hand and gave it a squeeze, his eyes fixed on Dai’s chest as if he were feeling shy.
In reality, Mr Dai was wearing a dark shirt today. The weather was getting hotter, and despite the air conditioning, eating a hot meal had caused him to perspire slightly. As a result, he had undone an extra button, revealing a hint of the deep groove of his muscular chest.
So damn sexy!
Gu Jiaoyang was quietly drooling internally, but he had his own little strategy. They say people don’t cherish what they get too easily. Before the relationship was official, he could be as flirtatious as he liked, but actually snagging the man was the main priority. Once he had him, he’d have to be a bit more reserved so the man wouldn’t think he was easy or lacked novelty.
“Little Red?” Dai Gucan looked at his little boyfriend, who was squeezing his hand with such a meek and shy expression. He didn’t connect ‘Little Red’ to the tomato plant at all; his eyes were filled entirely with his adorable boyfriend.
“It’s those tomatoes Mr Dai planted. In my previous worl uh, my master used to grow spirit plants to eat, so I infused a tomato plant with a bit of spiritual energy. I don’t know if it can adapt and transform into a spirit plant. If it does, we can share the fruit it bears with you, Mr Dai. Spirit plants eaten by ordinary people can strengthen the body; there are quite a few benefits.” Gu Jiaoyang leaned naturally against Dai Gucan, kicking his feet up to rest casually on Dai’s thigh.
“Spirit plants? That magical?”
Dai Gucan’s parent company was a biotechnology and pharmaceutical firm, so even though he had studied economics and management, he was relatively interested in topics concerning plants and health.
“Let’s go and have a look. If it really is useful, I wonder… could Yangyang lend some to me for research?” Dai Gucan’s business mind was always online. He wasn’t some great philanthropist thinking of starting a pharmaceutical company to save the people from fire and water; it was simply the asset left by his parents, so he went with the flow.
“Sure. Yangyang’s things are Mr Dai’s things. If you need it, just tell me. However, Yangyang wants a bit of interest!”
“What interest?” Dai Gucan wrapped his arm around his little boyfriend’s waist. Melting a little at Gu Jiaoyang’s unreserved affection, his ears grew hot, and he thought to himself that he would agree to whatever the boy said.
Not only did he reveal his identity as a cultivator, but he even shared his good things. He really was too endearing.
“Kiss me. Hmm?”
“Clingy little thing.” Although the words were teasing, the doting affection and shyness within them were obvious.
Gu Jiaoyang seized the opportunity to act coquettishly with Dai Gucan, puckering his lips and demanding kisses until he was satisfied.
When their lips finally parted, both were slightly breathless. They leaned against each other for a long while before walking, supporting one another, towards the back garden to see how the tomato plant, Little Red, was growing.
“Oh, Bai Xian’er, it was my son being ignorant. We’re sending you back right now. Please don’t be angry, and I beg you to bless my son with health and good fortune in everything.”
Just as Gu Jiaoyang and Dai Gucan reached the pear tree in the back garden, they discovered the nanny whispering in the corner with her son.
“What’s going on?” Curious, Gu Jiaoyang went over to look and found the nanny’s son holding a small white object in his hands.
“Oh, hello Mr Dai, hello Young Master. It’s nothing, really. School finished early after exams today, so I told my son to wait for me here until I finished work. He was catching bugs in the garden and unexpectedly found a ‘Bai Xian’er’. We were just about to release it.”
The nanny patted the dirt off her son’s forehead, answering somewhat happily. Evidently, encountering a “White Immortal” had pleased her.
“What is a Bai Xian’er?” Gu Jiaoyang was amused. He hadn’t expected to find a servant in a wealthy household who held such superstitious beliefs.
“Ahem, it’s a white hedgehog. It’s one of the Five Immortals from our hometown, also known as White Granny. That hedgehog-shaped white steamed bun in our fridge is meant to represent her.” Dai Gucan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Although he wasn’t superstitious, he knew of it. Perhaps because his elders had spoken of it often, he tended to be more polite to these small animals than to ordinary ones.
Judging by the dirt on the boy’s forehead, the child had probably been coaxed by the nanny into kowtowing three times.
“We’re next to Dragon Slope, so the natural environment is a bit better. Some small animals are quite common, though it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a white hedgehog.” Dai Gucan told the nanny to stand up and brush off the dirt, holding Gu Jiaoyang’s small hand as he spoke.
“A white hedgehog? Can I pay my respects to White Granny’s countenance?” Gu Jiaoyang was curious because, just a moment ago, he had faintly sensed a wisp of spiritual energy, which seemed to be emanating from the white hedgehog.
Could it have gained sentience and become a spirit?
“Ah, Young Master, be careful. The White Immortal can bite.” Although the nanny followed these old traditions, she had received a modern education and knew where to draw the line.
“Wow, it really is a white hedgehog. This is the first time I’ve seen one.” The little hedgehog was only the size of a child’s fist, much smaller than an ordinary hedgehog. Its body was indeed entirely white, and it was currently lying in the boy’s palm, staring at Gu Jiaoyang with two black beady eyes.
This human has a scent I like!!!
The white hedgehog twitched its nose, then kicked its little legs, launching itself directly from the boy’s hand.
“Hey!!! Young Master, watch out!!!” The nanny screamed, frightened by the hedgehog’s sudden movement. Compared to feudal superstition, the boss’s physical safety was definitely more important. If she lost her rice bowl, who would care about some immortal?!
“Careful!” Dai Gucan was much faster than the nanny. Before the little white hedgehog could pounce onto Gu Jiaoyang, he caught it in mid-air. Ignoring whether it was prickly or not, he pulled Gu Jiaoyang behind him with one hand while gripping the hedgehog with the other.
When the little white hedgehog had stared at him with those beady eyes, Gu Jiaoyang realised it really had gained sentience. Its intelligence was at least that of an eight or nine-year-old child, and it knew not to leak too much spiritual energy, implying it knew how to cultivate.
It was likely attracted by the spiritual power he had poured into Little Red the tomato. It probably wanted to pounce on him because he was a cultivator with the rare Chaos Spirit Root; his spiritual energy was the purest, which these little spirits loved.
“How is your hand? Did it prick you?” Gu Jiaoyang was warmed to the core by Mr Dai’s obvious protective gesture. He reached out to pluck the little white hedgehog from Dai’s iron grip, while his other hand stroked Dai Gucan’s long, elegant fingers. Seeing no injury, he secretly transferred a stream of spiritual energy into him anyway.
It’s the smell of delicious food!
The little white hedgehog, having just been caught by Dai Gucan and now dangling by the scruff of its neck in despair, smelled the spiritual energy Gu Jiaoyang was transferring to Dai. Its two small black eyes instantly lit up, staring unblinkingly at Gu Jiaoyang as it began to drool.
Oh mummy… it smells so good!
I’m going to follow.
