After the Zerg General Was Accidentally Marked - Chapter 30
Chapter 30: Threat
In the blink of an eye, Saturday arrived. The day of Everett’s date.
Right after breakfast, the little high-rank received a delivery. It was a custom-made suit. As soon as he unpacked it, he couldn’t wait to try it on.
Sears didn’t have much knowledge of fashion; he used to wear various military uniforms combat gear, training fatigues, and full dress uniforms. Regarding the little high-rank’s new clothes, he could only tell it was a light-colored suit that fit perfectly and complemented his silver hair well.
It looked very good.
But at the thought that the little high-rank had dressed up so handsomely specifically for a date with Walter, he felt a bit uncomfortable in his heart.
Sears unfastened his bite-guard and lowered his head to take a sip of juice as a cover-up.
“Does it look good?” After admiring himself in the mirror for a long time, the little high-rank finally began to ask for his opinion.
Before Sears could speak, Bigu, who was nearby, clapped enthusiastically: “So good-looking!!!”
“As expected of a high-rank! You were already handsome, but after putting on nice clothes, you’re practically glowing!” The little cub genuinely liked Everett’s new outfit and circled him several times. “Like the stars in the sky, bling-bling!”
Everett was quite happy to be praised and bowed back with a gentlemanly gesture. “Thank you, Bigu!”
Then, “But the allowance still can’t be increased.”
The little cub’s motive was exposed, and he instantly lost most of his enthusiasm, but he still stood by his point: “High-rank is very handsome!”
“What do you think?” The little high-rank asked Sears again.
Sears put the bite-guard back on. He let out a muffled “Mhm.”
“What does ‘Mhm’ mean?”
“It looks good.”
“Do you like it, then?”
“Mhm.”
Sears’ answer was quite perfunctory. What use was it whether he liked it or not? It wasn’t being worn for him to see anyway.
He completely ignored the fact that he was the one who originally persuaded Everett to agree to the date.
“Then it’s happily decided!” the little high-rank announced. “I’ll wear this set for my birthday!”
“Birthday? When is Master’s birthday?” Little Dummy immediately followed up, as if he didn’t already know his master’s basic information.
“Exactly one month from today!”
“Wow! What is the thing High-rank Brother looks forward to most for his birthday?” Bigu asked with his chin in his hands, displaying a childhood innocence he had never really owned before.
“Of course it’s the whole family going out to play together!” Everett paused, then added, “And receiving birthday gifts!”
“Yay! Then Bigu will prepare an awesome birthday gift for High-rank Brother!”
“What gift is Female Brother planning to give?” Bigu looked toward Sears.
The little high-rank also looked at him expectantly.
These three were chiming in one after another as if performing a skit. It was clearly rehearsed beforehand, just to ask him that final question.
So the little high-rank’s birthday was coming up. Sears noted the date and thought for a moment. “I’ll give something I made with my own hands.”
“Really?” Having received an unexpected answer, Everett was very pleasantly surprised. He had originally expected a cold “nothing.”
Sears didn’t reply; he just felt that the light-colored suit suddenly looked much more pleasing to the eye.
“The clothes are very beautiful,” Sears praised sincerely.
Everett didn’t press further. After finishing the trial of his birthday suit, he changed back into his usual hoodie, long pants, and sneakers, preparing to go to the “date” just like that.
Before heading out, he asked as if casually, “What are you planning to do today?”
To this, Sears’ answer was: “I have to take care of Bigu today. I can’t leave a cub at home alone.”
Bigu, who often went out alone or occasionally took Little Dummy to explore the map near the house: “Huh? Watching me?”
Then, under Sears’ pointed gaze, he obediently changed his tune. “Correct, I need to be watched. After all, I am just an underage cub!”
After Everett left, the room fell into a moment of awkward silence.
Bigu threw up his hands: “Can you two adults not always involve me in your business, please?”
Although it was an excuse, Sears did indeed need to have a proper talk with the little cub. “I heard you got into a fight with other cubs at the kindergarten?”
Bigu realized things were bad. In the instant he tried to flee, he was accurately pinched by the back of the neck by the military female. He could only be captured obediently, but he still shrieked: “They insulted me first!”
“They said I’m a little cub that nobody wants!”
Sears frowned upon hearing this. “Everett and I want you, of course.”
“I know that, but…” Bigu sputtered for a long while before blurting out the truth. “The other cubs all have someone to drop them off and pick them up.”
“But I only have Little Dummy.”
Seeing the military female’s expression grow increasingly grim, the little cub hurried to compensate. “I don’t mean that you guys aren’t good enough. I know you’re willing to take me in, and that’s already very good… sorry…” His voice grew smaller until it vanished, and his tail hook slumped down as well.
“No, Gugu.” Sears gently stroked the tail hook along the little cub’s back. “We are the ones who should apologize.”
“Everett and I are both raising a cub for the first time; we didn’t know anything.” He himself had never attended a transitional school like a kindergarten, and as for Everett’s situation, he wasn’t sure either. In short, it was the first time both insects realized that little cubs needed to be picked up and dropped off personally.
“Whatever other little cubs have, we will try our best to give to you. Just say it directly.” Then, Admiral Sears promised, “From now on, Everett and I will take turns picking you up.”
Bigu, receiving encouragement and validation, became bolder. “Not just that, those insects at the kindergarten seem to have a lot of money… so they always want to order me around! I’m not their subordinate! Why should I do work for them!”
Hearing this, Sears felt the little cub was in the right, so he nodded. “Correct. Without reason, you don’t have to do things for other cubs.”
He also seemed to have found the reason why Bigu had been especially money-hungry lately. “Is that why you’ve been trying every possible way to get pocket money out of Everett?”
Although the family of three had originally squeezed into this apartment because they were temporarily short on cash, Sears had left enough cash in the safe house. Combined with the money Everett got from the Magic Lamp Company, it was more than enough for daily expenses. They could even afford Bigu’s expensive kindergarten tuition and the ridiculous treatment fees for Sears’ wings.
Poverty was just one of the family’s false labels.
He just hadn’t expected it to affect the little cub.
“I didn’t steal, and I didn’t rob…” Bigu defended in a low voice.
True. For an insect coming out of the Fourteenth District to manage that was already very kind.
“In the future, if you want to buy something, you can tell me. As long as it’s reasonable, I’ll buy it for you. The family has money.” Sears opened the optical-link to check the funds and immediately discovered the income of over a million in the little high-rank’s account from recently selling merchandise. He was silent for a moment.
…Am I really that expensive?!
Although he didn’t know why the little high-rank had suddenly changed his mind and was willing to sell the merchandise without telling him, at least they were indeed rich now. Very rich.
Sears decided on the spot: “I’ll increase your pocket money by another hundred.”
“Yay!” Having two requests satisfied in a row, the little cub began to get carried away.
“And one more thing! One day in class, the teacher asked what our dreams were. I said, I want to be the most powerful assassin in the Empire!”
“Everyone laughed at me! But I know you’re super powerful! On the spaceship, hitting the robots, swish swish swish a few times! And they fell!”
“So, can you teach me?”
How did the topic suddenly shift from the parenting channel to the adult blood-and-gore channel? Sears couldn’t help but frown. “Bigu, you don’t need to learn these things…”
“But if I don’t learn, how can I avenge my sub-female father?” “How can I protect you and the little high-rank in the future?”
The little cub had quite deep thoughts. “The Zerg Empire has relevant laws that can sanction lawbreakers.”
“When has Zerg law ever cared about the life or death of military females or sub-females?!” Bigu got anxious, his tail hook standing high. “After Sub-female Father died, his body was quickly burned to nothing!”
Even the little cub understood this logic; Sears naturally couldn’t be ignorant of it. But he still hoped that these next-generation insects carrying the Zerg race would not give up hope too early.
However, this was too complex. The little cub clearly couldn’t sit through a long lecture. He could only say vaguely, “There will be a day of change.”
At least in the previous life, Everett had changed some of the Zerg rules.
Even though this future Zerg Emperor had just indicated he wanted to throw in the towel and not do it.
“Who wants to wait that long! As long as you teach me how to fight and kill insects, I won’t have to waste time going to kindergarten!”
That wasn’t right. Sears turned to ask, “You want to use violence to sanction injustice, so you want to turn yourself into a weapon, right?”
Bigu nodded.
“But the power of a single insect is ultimately limited. Do you know what the strongest weapon in the Empire is?”
Bigu thought for a moment. “The strongest starship… the Ireson?”
“Then do you know how to get the chance to pilot the Ireson?”
Bigu shook his head.
“Study hard.”
“For real? If I study hard, I can fly the Ireson?”
“Of course. I’ve flown it.”
“Wow…! What does it feel like?”
Just like that, Sears successfully led the little cub astray.
Bigu reflected deeply and stated that he would definitely study hard from now on, make progress every day, and strive to pilot a large starship as soon as possible!
“But I have another wish that can be fulfilled right now.” Bigu winked. “I want to go watch High-rank Brother’s date!”
The little cub tugged at Sears’ wrist pleadingly. “Let’s go, let’s go! Just say I’m the one who wanted to go!”
On the other side, Everett arrived at the dating spot right on time a particularly expensive high-rank-exclusive Western restaurant in the city center.
When he arrived, Walter had already booked a window seat according to his suggestion and waved to him from there.
As soon as he saw Everett approaching, Walter immediately stood up and, with a smile, proactively pulled out the chair opposite him for the little high-rank. “Good afternoon, Excellency Everett Langston.”
Then he handed over the menu with great attentiveness. “This restaurant is widely popular among high-ranks. Excellency Everett, see if there is anything you like?”
The first thing Everett did after sitting down was look outside, but unfortunately, he didn’t see any familiar figures. Then, upon opening the menu, his vision was immediately struck by a pile of live-food. His throat moved, and he nearly gagged.
Fortunately, eggs count as semi-live. He flipped directly to the back and ordered a fried egg set.
During this time, the Walter opposite him had already begun enthusiastically introducing himself from age, height, and weight to assets, position, and family. Like submitting a resume, he detailed his individual situation.
Everett was absent-minded and didn’t listen carefully to the other’s “resume,” feeling only that Walter was being far too eager for success.
He closed the menu and interrupted the other directly: “I’m sorry, I already have a military female I like.”
“I came this time mainly to talk about the cargo company’s compensation.”
The smile on Walter’s face faded slightly. “Regarding that, I have some bad news to tell you.”
“The cargo ship you were on exploded while approaching synchronous orbit. I checked the surveillance for that day and found that it wasn’t an accident, but was caused by a missile hit.”
“The compensation process might be dragged out for a very long time.”
Upon hearing this news, Everett immediately looked up, instinctively straightened his body, and his eyes widened.
Someone wanted to kill him? Or Solas? There were only three living insects on the ship; it couldn’t possibly be targeted at Bigu, right?!
Seeing the little high-rank’s shocked expression, Walter felt even more confident. “But there is something even more serious. Though I am very sorry, there are indeed insects who harbor hostility toward you, a noble and beautiful Excellency.”
“And on this planet, only I, as the commander of the stationed troops, can ensure your safety. At the same time, I have enough financial power to improve your life. However, in order to reasonably provide you with close and comprehensive protection, the most appropriate way is to become your fem—”
“Wait a second,” Everett interrupted him. “Where did the missile come from? Was it from the Legion? If so, shouldn’t you be responsible for this safety incident?”
Now he highly suspected that the so-called missile attack was an excuse fabricated by Walter just to force him to become his high-rank master.
The smile on Walter’s face froze for a moment but was quickly adjusted. “Excellency Everett, you seem to have missed the point…”
The fried egg set was served. Everett used his knife and fork roughly to cut the egg; the sharp sound of metal hitting the plate interrupted the military female’s words. The egg white was sliced open, and the soft golden yolk flowed out.
The opposite military female’s gaze fell on the messy, mangled fried egg; his Adam’s apple bobbed, and the corner of his mouth twitched.
“I didn’t miss the point.” Everett took a bite of the fried egg and found the taste was good. He could ask the chef later and learn how to make it at home. “First, let me state my position.”
“One, I don’t need your protection.” “Two, you will never be my Female Sovereign, Female Attendant, or Female Slave.”
As the three words starting with “Female” popped out one by one from the little high-rank’s mouth, Walter’s expression grew increasingly grim.
The fried egg was bit by bit cut into pieces and eaten. Walter finally broke the silence again, handing over several photos. “Excellency Everett…”
Everett originally thought they were photos of himself and was about to wave them off in refusal. But the other persisted, “Take a look first!”
The first photo was of Everett; the shooting angle looked like it was in front of the apartment building, likely on a day he went out. The second was Solas at the same location. The third was Bigu and Little Dummy.
With the three photos laid out, Walter interlaced his fingers on the table. “Excellency Everett, of course we must prioritize the protection of a high-rank like yourself. But the Transit Star is not like the Capital; an undocumented military female and a deformed little cub can easily lose their lives by accident.”
“Unless they have my protection.”
Everett put down his knife and fork and finally looked directly into the other’s blue eyes for the first time. “Are you… threatening me?”
