- Chapter 104 - Those Wandering Upon the Rooftop
He had not come here before because all his focus had been poured into the escape room.
Since this was his first time relying entirely on himself rather than his parents, although he did take a bit of advice from Cheng Yi, Shen Ran took his first real business venture very seriously.
Because of that, he truly had not found the time to head to the Shen Group to clear up the things he had failed to understand previously.
Now, seeing that the escape room’s opening was a huge success, the visit to the Shen Group had to be put on the agenda.
Because of this, hurrying along while pulling Cheng Yi by the hand, Shen Ran was practically out of breath.
“Ahhh! If we had come even two days later, the company would be on holiday. If we tried to get in then, it would look far too suspicious!”
He did not know how meticulous Shen Xianming and Fu Sijie’s schemes truly were. If they insisted on checking the surveillance every day while the Shen Group was on break, it really would be impossible to come.
Then again, why had he not noticed before? He had not noticed how many cameras were at home, and the ones inside the company were even more numerous.
Even though people were constantly coming and going in the corridors, having his figure exposed to so many cameras still made his scalp tingle with an uncomfortable nervousness.
What made him even more nervous was the unknown on the rooftop.
At the time, Huang Yiheng had only sensed that there was something on the roof. As for the actual situation up there, or whether they would see something terrifying, no one knew for sure.
Compared to the anxious Shen Ran, Cheng Yi appeared much more composed.
After all, without the help of the phone, Cheng Yi could not see any spirits.
As for the cameras, when he was a child living in the Cheng family mansion, the dense cluster of cameras in his and his mother’s room was far more terrifying than this.
He had long since grown accustomed and indifferent to a life lived under the constant surveillance of others.
After all, if he had not adapted to that suffocating lifestyle, he surely would have ended up like his mother, unable to withstand the blow and losing his mind.
That was why, when he first visited the Shen house, he had immediately noticed the excessive number of cameras.
Perhaps because his legs were longer, Cheng Yi was not even as winded as Shen Ran. Though his strides were large, he maintained an air of natural authority.
Shen Ran noticed this too and could not help but grumble:
“You know, you give off the vibe that you are President Shen, and this entire Shen Group building is actually your property.”
To this, Cheng Yi only gave a light laugh. “What kind of talk is that, Ran Ran? I am already President Cheng; I would not deign to be President Shen.”
Heh.
Despite being the young master of the Shen family for so many years, Shen Ran had never once been to the rooftop of the Shen Group.
The rooftop door was not locked, but it was heavily rusted. It was clear that no one usually visited this place.
With a creak and a rather piercing sound, Shen Ran reached out and pushed open the heavy door.
The bitter cold wind immediately rushed in, so strong that Shen Ran instinctively squinted his eyes.
Stepping over the threshold, his vision suddenly opened up.
When he saw the scene on the rooftop, Shen Ran’s eyes widened, and he nearly held his breath.
How could he describe the sight before him in words?
In this relatively small space, many spirits were wandering about, seven or eight of them upon a quick count.
Judging by their age, they all seemed to be young adults, and their attire clearly marked them as office workers.
However, these spirits were different from the ones he had seen before.
They were not as vivid as Xiao Dong or Xia Xingyuan. They paced and swayed without any lively expressions; their hollow eyes did not even have a point of focus.
Shen Ran even felt that they could be described as being in a state of delirium.
Encountering spirits in this condition, Shen Ran began to doubt whether he could even communicate with them, or if he could learn anything from their mouths.
At some point, Cheng Yi had moved to his side, holding his phone in one hand. His expression was no longer its usual nonchalant self; it was actually quite solemn.
“Their condition looks a bit off.”
“I feel it too.” Shen Ran swallowed hard and walked toward one of the spirits. “But since we are already here, I have to try asking.”
“Be careful,” Cheng Yi cautioned, his gaze fixed on Shen Ran, never wavering.
If any sudden change occurred, Cheng Yi wanted to be able to save Shen Ran immediately.
“Hello?”
Shen Ran waved his hand in front of a spirit’s eyes, attempting to communicate. “What is your name? What is your name?”
The spirit’s eyes remained hollow without a trace of a reaction. Its lips moved slightly as it slowly bypassed him.
Whatever it was muttering, Shen Ran could not hear it clearly.
Unsuccessful on the first try, Shen Ran did not lose heart and walked toward the next spirit.
Fortunately, heaven rewards the diligent. After three or four attempts, a young man who looked to be in his thirties finally reacted to him.
“Uh, hello. May I ask why you all turned out like this? And why are you wandering here?”
The young spirit pointed at himself, his voice slow. “I am called Ji Yan. I previously took the fall for the Shen Group. I thought I could save more money for my family, but I did not expect that President Shen would try to silence me.”
Word by word, he outlined Shen Xianming’s cold selfishness and shamelessness.
“I wander here because I found I could not escape. I simply wanted to jump from here, but I did not expect to be caught here by…”
Ji Yan did not finish the rest, but Shen Ran could basically guess.
Looking around, Shen Ran surmised that the other spirits might have experienced similar situations as Ji Yan.
“They have been here even longer than I have. I have wandered here for five years.”
“What are they constantly muttering?” Shen Ran asked.
Ji Yan was silent for a moment, his voice raspy. “Kill Shen Xianming. Kill Fu Sijie.”
The longer time passed, the blurrier their consciousness became. In the end, only the obsession remained.
Until the obsession was fulfilled, they would never dissipate.
The unspeakable suffering of ordinary people had been sealed away on this small rooftop for many years.
Shen Ran felt heavy-hearted and could only offer words of comfort. “Don’t worry, they will die. They will face their retribution. It just still needs some time.”
Ji Yan nodded. “I am waiting.”
Recalling Huang Yiheng’s reminder, Shen Ran asked the final question:
“By the way, there is one more thing I want to ask. Not long ago, did someone who feels similar to me come here?”
Ji Yan stood still for a moment, appearing to think, and then slowly bowed his head.
“A person did come, but they were somewhat different from you.”
As for exactly how they were different, Ji Yan could not say.
After all, Ji Yan had wandered here for a long time; being able to communicate at all was already a stroke of luck.
Upon careful inquiry, Shen Ran only managed to learn two pieces of information.
