- Chapter 18 - Honey, Do You Really Not Love Me Anymore?
During the transition between spring and summer, the drizzle fell gently, bringing a refreshing coolness to the face.
This was probably the heroine’s standard setting rain whenever she faced hardship.
Little Cheng sighed inwardly. Miaomiao was truly having a tough time. She stuck out her tongue and gently licked Shen Yunmiao’s fingers, which were stroking her head.
Shen Yunmiao, on the other hand, remained emotionally stable, appearing as if nothing was wrong. She tapped the kitten’s nose gently and smiled tenderly. But soon, she sighed again, “We can’t get a taxi.”
Rainy days in the suburbs indeed made it difficult to hail a cab.
Fortunately, Shen Yunmiao had the habit of carrying an umbrella with her, so neither she nor the kitten got too drenched.
She kept increasing the fare, hoping someone would accept the ride, but even after adding an extra 200, no one did.
Cheng Jianian felt distressed, unable to bear the thought of her spending so much more money. She nuzzled Shen Yunmiao’s wrist and shook her head in refusal.
“You’re so thoughtful, sweetie. Are you worried that I’m spending too much?” Shen Yunmiao set down the cat carrier and let the kitten inside to take shelter from the rain. “Alright, then let’s take the bus, okay?”
If it were any other day, she might have waited a bit longer, but with the rain today, she was afraid the kitten might catch a cold.
Shen Yunmiao carried the cat carrier in front of her and began walking toward the bus stop. The area was too remote there wasn’t even a shared bike parking spot nearby. Every time, Shen Yunmiao would ride for an hour and a half before walking for a while.
Little Cheng had only known that Shen Yunmiao had to ride for a long time, but today was the first time she realized that Shen Yunmiao had to walk afterward as well. A wave of heartache instantly filled her chest, leaving her feeling heavy and stifled.
Shen Yunmiao seemed to have long realized that her kitten was no ordinary cat but a clever one who could understand human speech. As she walked, she comforted the kitten, “It’s okay. I often time it just right so I can catch a ride with Director Jian or Sister Yuan. They’re very kind and always give me a lift.”
The little white cat didn’t make a sound, only licked her palm, leaving the small area wet, as if tears had gathered into a puddle.
She didn’t believe that Shen Yunmiao’s personality would allow her to easily accept favors from others, especially such small ones. In the original plot of the novel, unless absolutely necessary, Shen Yunmiao would never let others help her.
She was indeed a pitiable little white flower, having weathered storms and endured scorching sun. Yet, this little white flower swayed with the wind and grew under the light, firmly rooted in the soil, resilient and unyielding. Nothing could break her.
Whether it was unwarranted malice from others, the unfair treatment from the world, or unattainable affections, none of it could make her crumble.
The biggest flaw in this novel was making Ji Hanfeng, that useless man, her savior. While some people in the world might rely on a relationship to turn their lives around, Shen Yunmiao was definitely not one of them.
First, she didn’t need it, and second, Ji Hanfeng was utterly incapable of saving her.
Ji Hanfeng himself was someone who relied on his family for support. Even later on, he never fully shed his identity as the heir of the Ji family. What kind of savior was that?
Little Cheng thought that even if the male and female leads were destined to fall in love, their Miaomiao would never need Ji Hanfeng to swoop in and save the day whenever she faced difficulties.
She would have more, better, and faster ways to solve those problems.
Cheng Jianian admired this kind of person because she herself was one of them. There were plenty of children in the Cheng family, and her father was not the head of the household. On the contrary, he was nothing but a hopeless mess.
But Little Cheng was still Little Cheng, revered and feared by thousands.
Relying on others would inevitably lead to disappointment one day.
Relying on oneself, even if one failed, there would be no room for self-pity or despair. Try ten thousand times, and eventually, one of those attempts would succeed.
Cheng Jianian was betting on that one-in-ten-thousand chance.
But at this moment, she found herself desperately hoping that one day, this girl who was always rushing around could rely on her.
Little Cheng had never been sheltered, yet she yearned to become a shelter for someone else.
Not like now, with raindrops drifting in the wind, allowing this person to tuck her safely into a cat carrier under an umbrella while she herself was drenched by the slanting drizzle.
Fortunately, the timing was just right. Shen Yunmiao politely asked the driver if she could bring the cat on board. The driver glanced over, pointed to the back, and said, “There’s no one on the bus right now. Take the cat to the very back seat. When it gets crowded later, it won’t get squished.”
Shen Yunmiao thanked him repeatedly and quietly made her way to the last row, holding the cat carrier.
The rain grew heavier. Spring rain revives all things, but now, in the late spring, this downpour was heralding the arrival of summer.
The tightly closed bus windows kept the rain at bay but couldn’t block the interplay of light and shadow falling upon them. The shifting brightness and darkness cast on her face added a touch of melancholy.
Cheng Jianian, hidden inside the cat carrier, watched Shen Yunmiao outside. For a moment, she almost felt as though Shen Yunmiao didn’t belong to this world.
This strange feeling had surfaced many times before. The current Shen Yunmiao seemed to lack so much, yet also seemed to bear too much hardship.
The words “It shouldn’t be like this” coiled around her heart, tightening until even the cat felt suffocated.
Several stops passed with no one boarding. The driver called out to the only passenger in the back, “Let the cat out for some air. Don’t let it suffocate. Just make sure it doesn’t go to other seats.”
Shen Yunmiao thanked him again. She didn’t like troubling others, but when it came to the cat, it was a different story. She unzipped the cat carrier slightly, and the little white cat leaped out gracefully.
“Meow,” she purred, snuggling back into Shen Yunmiao’s arms and kicking away the bothersome carrier.
Shen Yunmiao placed the carrier at her feet and gently stroked the little white cat in her arms. Its soft, white long fur was no longer smooth, revealing the hardships the kitten had endured.
Silence hung between them.
Suddenly, a phone rang. Shen Yunmiao fumbled for a while but couldn’t find her earphones, so she turned down the volume and answered on speakerphone.
“Yunmiao, um, have you checked Flow?” It was Yuan Duan calling.
Shen Yunmiao lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes casting a faint shadow on her eyelids. “No, I haven’t.”
“Oh, that’s good, that’s good. It’s nothing serious, just trivial matters. Once the movie is released, it’ll all blow over.”
Yuan Duan’s own words felt somewhat insincere. Nowadays, actors were practically equivalent to celebrities relying on fans, resources, and agencies, but rarely on acting skills.
No matter how talented an actor was, if they were targeted by an established actress before even officially debuting, unless they had strong backing and that backing had to be powerful enough, they were doomed.
Shen Yunmiao looked down at the little white cat in her arms, who was straining to hear more, and smiled silently. She said, “No matter what, I’m grateful for your help and Director Jian’s support. I just hope I won’t affect the movie’s promotion.”
Yuan Duan fell silent for a long moment before sighing. “Ah, you’re just too stubborn. This situation has turned out worst for you. After all, she’s under Young Master Cheng’s protection. That’s the advantage of being an artist in the Aquarius system.”
Shen Yunmiao didn’t deny it, but neither did she break down in tears of regret. The conversation lapsed into silence before they eventually hung up.
Shen Yunmiao met the pair of heterochromatic eyes gleaming under the light and sighed softly. “Darling, it seems your sister is about to get roasted online.”
“How could she recruit someone like this as an artist.” Shen Yunmiao’s voice trailed off into a murmur.
Unbeknownst to her, the cat in her arms was even more resentful, how had such a person ever been allowed into their company?
Gently squeezing the white cat’s paw, Shen Yunmiao whispered:
“Alright then, I’ll stop liking her by the summer solstice. It’ll be hot enough by then anyway.”
Cheng Nian met her clear, beautiful eyes and felt a pang in her heart. Though her Miaomiao didn’t explain, she somehow understood the reason behind choosing the summer solstice to stop caring.
When the day grows hot, perhaps a little chill in the heart won’t feel so bad.
