- Chapter 17 - The Wife Shows Her Might and Confronts the Villain!
Qiao Jingshu’s lips trembled, but before she could utter a word, her assistant at the door began wailing dramatically, “Sister Jingshu, that’s not.”
Qiao Jingshu forced a pale smile. “Don’t say anything. It’s fine. If Yunmiao wants to look, let her. What’s the big deal?”
Shen Yunmiao couldn’t be bothered to engage with their clumsy acting. She reached out and pulled open the cabinet door.
The cat carrier was pulled out, and fresh air rushed in, carrying the crisp, cold fragrance of melting snow.
The moment her vision cleared, sunlight and Shen Yunmiao arrived together, both landing squarely in the little white cat’s heterochromatic eyes.
Xiao Cheng, the young CEO, nearly burst into tears at the sight of the person before her.
A sliver of sunlight streamed through the window of the RV, warm and gentle. The breeze lifted her loose strands of hair. Still in her costume, a plain white robe that trailed on the floor, she looked as if an immortal had truly descended.
With a soft whimper, the cat burrowed into Shen Yunmiao’s arms. “Meow!”
Shen Yunmiao, Shen Yunmiao, why did you take so long to come? I was so scared.
Shen Yunmiao fought back tears, holding her little cat tightly as she whispered soothingly, “Don’t be afraid, sweetie. Your sister is here. Everything’s alright.”
Qiao Jingshu’s expression instantly soured. Her smile was barely sustainable, but Shen Yunmiao picked up the cat carrier, cradled the cat, and turned to leave without the slightest intention of speaking to her.
It was glaringly obvious Shen Yunmiao had no intention of saving face for her.
Qiao Jingshu’s temper flared. How dare an amateur with no notable works to her name challenge her like this? What was she thinking?
Outside the door, Jian Shen and Yuan Duan breathed sighs of relief when they saw Shen Yunmiao emerge with the cat. They had already barged in; if they had found nothing, it would have been a disaster.
Jian Shen laughed awkwardly and said, “Ah, this little cat just loves to wander off. Well, since we’ve found her now, then.”
“Oh, yes, this kitten is just too mischievous,” the assistant chimed in, observing Qiao Jingshu’s expression and seizing the moment to interrupt Jian Shen. “But this is the cabinet where our Jingshu specifically stores her medicine.”
Jian Shen was momentarily speechless, her lips twitching almost imperceptibly. Wait, wasn’t she supposed to be smoothing things over? How had the guilty party turned the tables?
Yuan Duan, more composed, smiled and said, “Then it really is the kitten’s fault. How about this, Jingshu? Let us know if the kitten damaged anything here, and I’ll take care of the compensation.”
Qiao Jingshu gave a self-deprecating smile. “It’s nothing. There’s no need for compensation.”
“Wait,” Shen Yunmiao interjected, her voice cold enough to freeze. “No matter how much our kitten loves to wander, she wouldn’t drag her carrier around. If my kitten has suffered any harm, I think it’s you, Senior, who should be compensating.”
She turned, her gaze sweeping over them like a winter blizzard, leaving nothing but chill in its wake.
Qiao Jingshu was momentarily stunned by her stare. Just as she was about to speak, the young woman before her cut her off, declaring coldly, “No, wait. How could someone like you, Senior, ever compensate for a family member others hold dear?”
Her words left not only Qiao Jingshu but even Jian Shen and the others stunned. Shen Yunmiao was usually so gentle she almost never looked at anyone without a smile and never dwelled on trivial matters, always knowing when to stop.
So much so that many people thought of her as a cup of warm water, comfortable and just right.
But now, that cup of warm water had frozen over, sudden and unexpected, leaving everyone shivering in astonishment.
Shen Yunmiao chuckled lightly, “The locator on our little darling also contains a micro-camera. This camera is far more effective than the ones used on set. Senior, do you really want me to investigate?”
“To find out just how energetic our little darling is, running all the way here in such a frenzy. Once I’ve clarified everything, I can properly compensate you.”
Little Cheng Zong had already recovered from her earlier fear. Nestled in Shen Yunmiao’s arms, she clearly heard every ruthless word spoken by the person holding her.
In that instant, the surge of emotion she felt outweighed her shock. She certainly didn’t view this as some earth-shattering fall from grace; after the initial surprise, what lingered was an indescribable sense of joy.
The vague memories stirred up were undoubtedly painful. Darkness still clung to her senses, threatening to devour the soul trapped within this feline form. Yet, she never expected Shen Yunmiao to go this far for her. To be treated as a treasure?
It was truly an unfamiliar and wondrous feeling.
But, it wasn’t enough. In Little Cheng Zong’s eyes, this level of response didn’t even qualify as tit-for-tat. This Qiao Jingshu really had no shame just a few truthful words, and she was already tearing up for whose benefit?
Did she think she was pitiable? If it had been any other cat in her place today, it would have likely been stressed to the point of scratching her without hesitation.
One could easily imagine how she would have reacted then probably sobbing endlessly to play the victim, only to incite online harassment afterward.
Now that her attempt at bullying had failed, she was putting on the act of the aggrieved party.
When Little Cheng Zong was in a position of power, she had always looked down on such clumsy tactics. Now, they disgusted her even more.
She instinctively couldn’t be bothered to watch Qiao Jingshu’s performance. Instead, she sniffed the scent of fresh snow and burrowed deeper into Shen Yunmiao’s embrace.
The rich, crisp fragrance had never felt so comforting, so intoxicating, as it did in that moment.
Shen Yunmiao such a beautiful name circled in her mind countless times. The three syllables slowly softened into two, then melted into an affectionate, overlapping nickname.
Yunmiao, ah my Miaomiao.
Little Cheng Zong felt as though the name had softened her entire heart.
She finally admitted to herself that, in front of this person, she had none of the arrogance she once held as Cheng Zong, the acclaimed actress, or the young mistress of the Cheng family. Whenever she saw those dark, liquid eyes, all she wanted was to draw closer, and closer still.
She lowered her usually proud head and pressed her ear into the hand before her, clutching at Shen Yunmiao’s wide sleeve as she let out a soft “meow,” stopping her.
Let’s go, Miaomiao. A gentleman’s revenge can wait ten years. Once I’m back, I’ll surely seek justice for us.
But for now Little Cheng Zong, for the first time in her life, understood what it felt like to be stifled by frustration. Yet, when one is under another’s roof or in this case, a cat in another’s arms, it was clear that provoking Qiao Jingshu now would yield no good outcome.
The thought that this was an artist under her management, one who had leveraged her influence to act so arrogantly, made Cheng Jianian’s breath catch in her throat. She almost wished she could scratch her human self in frustration.
Poor management had allowed those beneath her to commit such foolish and wicked deeds, and now the consequences had fallen upon her. Wasn’t this a case of retribution finding its rightful target?
But Miaomiao was truly pitiable.
She couldn’t let this retaliation fall upon Miaomiao.
Shen Yunmiao glanced down at the little white cat in her arms, desperately clutching at her sleeve. A pang of sorrow and pain flowed through her heart.
She gently stroked the kitten’s head, her dark eyes regaining their usual tenderness as she whispered softly, “Does my darling not want me to say anymore?”
The kitten obediently nodded.
Shen Yunmiao glanced at the silent, densely packed crew members behind Jian Shen, then turned her gaze to the impatient Jian Shen and the slightly awkward Yuan Duan. She had already made up her mind.
As for Qiao Jingshu, she couldn’t even be bothered to spare her a glance.
“Senior, I have nothing more to say. How about you?”
Qiao Jingshu trembled with rage but couldn’t utter a single word.
She could only watch helplessly as Shen Yunmiao walked away, holding the cat in her arms.
