- Chapter 15 - My Wife Is So Smart, Hehe
Qiao Jingshu teased the little white cat hiding in its carrier like a cat playing with a mouse, exuding the unbothered demeanor of someone in power.
Her assistant, however, suddenly paled and held out her phone. “Sister Jingshu, look at this.”
Qiao Jingshu glanced at the screen, her lips tightening slightly, but her expression remained disdainful. She reached out, her sharp nails gently hooking the red string on the kitten’s paw, and smiled sinisterly. “Tsk, little kitten, your owner really cares about you, doesn’t she? What a pity, she’s still too naive. Some things, once spoken, just hand others leverage.”
Cheng Nianian watched Qiao Jingshu’s face, twisted with smug satisfaction, and felt a chill run through her. How could someone like this be an artist under her company? Li Shengran’s judgment in selecting talent was clearly slipping.
On the other hand, she found it laughable how easily the red string with the bell had been snatched away.
Utterly foolish, a waste of space who can’t even manage to do bad things properly.
Thinking about how Shen Yunmiao had silently let these idiots strut about and make fools of themselves, a sense of pride swelled in Little Cheng’s heart.
Shen Yunmiao truly deserved to be the chosen one.
Her fluffy tail swished inside the carrier as Little Cheng waited calmly for someone to pick her up. With the tracker around her neck, it wouldn’t be long before Shen Yunmiao arrived.
Qiao Jingshu twirled the red string with the bell a few times before tossing it to her assistant. “Take care of this,” she said coldly. “Let our little princess search to her heart’s content.”
The assistant didn’t dare say more and whispered, “If you need anything, just ask the driver.”
“I know, no need for the extra chatter,” Qiao Jingshu replied impatiently, waving her off.
The assistant didn’t linger a moment longer. Grabbing the bell, she hurried out. That thing was nothing but a hot potato if she didn’t get rid of it quickly, the entire studio would be in trouble.
Their star actress, who thought of herself as a newly crowned Best Actress and rising star, would never have been directly cast if not for recommendations from higher-ups. Jian Shen never made a habit of handing out roles without auditions.
Now, Qiao Jingshu was acting recklessly only because her childhood friend was a trusted aide of CEO Cheng. But if things blew up, even the closest friend wouldn’t be able to protect an assistant, she’d be the first one thrown under the bus.
Thinking of Shen Yunmiao’s usually gentle smile, the assistant sighed helplessly. She was just a lowly assistant, powerless to change anything.
After riding her electric bike for half an hour, she casually buried the red string by the roadside.
Shen Yunmiao led the way, with Jian Shen and the rest of the crew following behind. Everyone in the group was on edge, eager to find the cat as soon as possible, though a few were just there for the drama. The young man in charge of surveillance tried to sneak closer to the props team.
Jian Shen felt uneasy but didn’t dare ask Shen Yunmiao directly. Instead, she leaned toward Yuan Duan and whispered, “Hey, Yuan Duan, that bell was a prop from the set, right? I’m not mistaken, am I?”
Yuan Duan smirked coldly. “Director Jian, just follow along for now. Haven’t you figured things out yet?”
“Huh?” Jian Shen looked at her blankly.
Yuan Duan sighed. “Never mind that. Did you do what Yunmiao asked you to earlier?”
Jian Shen nodded emphatically. “Yes, it’s done.”
Just moments ago, Shen Yunmiao had privately messaged her on WeChat, instructing her to inform the props team that a tracking chip had been pre-installed in the bell, allowing it to be used as a locator. She also emphasized that they must carefully note anyone who inquired about the bell.
Yuan Duan said nothing more and watched the girl walking swiftly ahead. Still in her costume, her snow-white shoes tread on the muddy ground yet remained spotless, her sleeves fluttering like a celestial maiden.
This girl was brave and resourceful, calm and composed, unflustered in the face of trouble and fearless in adversity, handling everything with ease.
She was perfect in every way, except for one thing: Yuan Duan couldn’t shake the feeling that Shen Yunmiao shouldn’t have lived this kind of life. Compared to an actress, her reserved, frost-like aura seemed more fitting for a researcher in some laboratory.
Suppressing that strange and untimely thought, Yuan Duan quickened her pace and offered comfort, “It definitely can’t be the cat thief.”
Shen Yunmiao turned her head and gave her a pale smile. “Sister Yuan, thank you. Even if I stop acting, I’ll remember your kindness.”
Yuan Duan’s heart trembled, unsure of how to respond.
In truth, Shen Yunmiao had already recognized the location on her phone. Of course, she knew it wasn’t the cat thief, the spot was where Qiao Jingshu usually parked her RV.
Shen Yunmiao was more observant of her surroundings than most people and often noticed many subtle details.
But what good did knowing do? It was better to pretend she knew nothing.
Shen Yunmiao had realized many years ago: if a wrong isn’t thoroughly concealed, it only means the perpetrator is confident and unafraid of being exposed because the victim lacks the power to seek justice.
She lowered her gaze, her long eyelashes trembling slightly in the wind. Shen Yunmiao thought to herself that not riding the bike earlier had been the right decision, the ground was too uneven, and cycling probably wouldn’t have been much faster than walking.
Besides, if she had ridden, Jian Shen and the others wouldn’t have been able to keep up. Without them, she might not have been able to bring Guaiguai back alone.
Next time Guaiguai was on set, she would stay by its side every step of the way.
Soon, they arrived at the location indicated by the tracker.
The film set was already in the suburbs, with few residents nearby. Qiao Jingshu didn’t want to rest too close to the set, so she always had her driver pick her up and drive the RV out for a temporary break.
Thus, the RV was parked in a very quiet, secluded spot with no one around.
A vehicle stood abruptly in front of the woods.
Even if Jian Shen hadn’t paid much attention, he recognized whose car it was, and his expression immediately darkened.
It wasn’t just him with Qiao Jingshu flaunting herself every day, who in the crew didn’t recognize this car?
They just didn’t dare to say anything.
Shen Yunmiao looked astonished and turned to Jian Shen for help. “Director Jian, this car but the navigation shows it’s definitely the right place.”
Her dark eyes were bright yet fragile, misted with moisture like clouds swirling around, so delicate they seemed to dissolve at a touch.
Jian Shen’s protective instincts surged instantly. He stepped forward and knocked on the door. “Jingshu, are you in there?”
Inside the RV, Qiao Jingshu had been trying to provoke the white cat but to no avail. The cat, half-hidden in its carrier, didn’t even spare her a glance. Her violent urges were just about to erupt when she heard the knocking.
Jian Shen’s voice was unmistakable. Qiao Jingshu roughly shoved the cat back into the carrier, zipped it up, and irritably stuffed it under the bed.
Almost instantly, Cheng Jianian was plunged into utter darkness, so pitch-black that she couldn’t even see her own hand. Not a single ray of light penetrated the space, and a wave of intense unease washed over her. Unable to control herself, she let out a sharp scream.
Qiao Jingshu kicked the cat carrier and said coldly, “Shut your mouth, or I’ll pull your teeth out.”
Unfazed, she yanked the door open, stepped out, and closed it behind her, her face wearing an innocent smile.
“Director Jian, oh, what brings all of you here?”
