- Chapter 14 - Honey, Someone’s Bullying Me, Boohoo
Cheng Jianian was absolutely furious. She had been minding her own business, safely tucked inside her cat carrier, not bothering anyone. Yet, out of nowhere, some clueless idiot had snatched the carrier with her still inside and made off with it.
Trapped inside, she couldn’t see clearly, but she could vaguely make out that the perpetrator was a grown man. His movements were frantic, his arms swinging wildly as he walked, clearly anxious and in a hurry, probably afraid of being caught.
In an instant, a flood of grim possibilities raced through Cheng Jianian’s mind.
Thinking of Shen Yunmiao, who was still on set filming, she forced herself to stay calm. She was still wearing the tracking device around her neck. As soon as Shen Yunmiao finished shooting and realized the cat carrier was missing, she would come looking right away. There was no need to worry.
But what if the man discovered the tracker and removed it? If that happened, he would have to take her out of the carrier, and once she was free, she could find a way to escape and run back.
The immediate priority was to figure out what this man intended to do.
A cat thief? Unlikely. The market for cat meat wasn’t that big, and it was far easier to catch stray cats than to pull off something like this. Besides, the set was under surveillance, why take such a risk?
That meant someone had done this deliberately. Without a doubt, it was another attempt to cause trouble for Shen Yunmiao.
At that thought, Little Cheng’s face instantly darkened.
They’d better hope she never returned to her original body unscathed, or she would make sure every last one of them regretted it.
The man was walking quickly but not recklessly. He stuck to deserted yet accessible paths, clearly having planned this in advance.
Whoever knew Shen Yunmiao had brought her cat today and had the opportunity to pull this off, it had to be someone else from the film crew.
Cheng Jianian racked her brain, trying to recall the other actors involved in the movie from the original plot. Back then, she hadn’t paid them any mind, focusing solely on Shen Yunmiao’s storyline. Now, her mind was a complete blank.
Feeling a little guilty, Little Cheng lifted a paw. Well, it wasn’t really her fault. This movie was Shen Yunmiao’s screen debut, and the novel had mostly focused on pushing the messy relationship between Shen Yunmiao and Ji Hanfeng, barely touching on her career development.
Soon, the man came to a stop. Peering through the transparent cover of the carrier, Cheng Jianian carefully surveyed her surroundings. Sure enough, they were in what looked like a trailer, spacious and well-appointed.
Cheng Jianian had a rough idea of what was going on. She lazily lay down, flicking her tail, ready to see what this female lead was up to and why she seemed so eager to dig her own grave.
Qiao Jingshu watched disdainfully as the man nervously carried the cat carrier inside. She arrogantly lifted her chin and said, “Put it here.”
She nodded to her assistant beside her and instructed, “Transfer 50,000 to him now.”
The staff member’s face lit up with a grin as soon as he received the transfer notification. He spouted a few flattering words, but Qiao Jingshu had no patience for it and waved him off. “Hurry up and leave. Make sure no one sees you coming here.”
He immediately thumped his chest confidently. “Don’t worry, ma’am. Even if you didn’t mind, I wouldn’t dare risk it. I’ve staked my entire career on doing this for you, I scouted the location ahead of time.”
Her round cat eyes narrowed slightly. Cheng Jianian had already pieced together the gist of the situation. No doubt, this female lead had orchestrated this cat-snatching incident to undermine Shen Yunmiao. Unfortunately for her, the cat’s consciousness was no longer the same as in the original plot. Things weren’t going to go as she had planned.
When her first plan failed, she quickly devised another, having the staff bring the cat over just to make Shen Yunmiao anxious.
The cat carrier was abruptly opened, and a wave of intense, pungent perfume hit the cat, making it nauseous. A pampered hand slowly reached in, and Little Cheng immediately went on high alert, baring its teeth.
Qiao Jingshu clicked her tongue lightly. Her assistant, standing beside her, advised, “This beast is unruly. Be careful it doesn’t bite you.”
“Hah, bite? Let it bite. If it does, it’ll be its owner who suffers.” Sharp nails slowly traced the cat’s head as Qiao Jingshu smiled menacingly. “They say this little creature is clever. Let’s see if it really is.”
Cheng Jianian’s fur bristled all over. She arched her back, claws tightly retracted. Her instincts screamed at her to retaliate against this reckless fool, but reason held her back firmly.
Qiao Jingshu’s goal was likely to provoke her into biting or scratching, which would then justify the unfolding of that particular plotline.
She absolutely could not, under any circumstances, let Shen Yunmiao end up in that situation because of her.
Yet Qiao Jingshu continued her reckless provocation, and the standoff between human and cat persisted.
Shen Yunmiao’s performance in this scene was so outstanding that Jian Shen, aiming for perfection, decided to shoot it in one continuous take without calling “cut.” She filmed several segments in sequence to form a single scene.
While fully immersed in her acting, Shen Yunmiao forced herself not to glance at the cat carrier beside Jian Shen, worrying whether her well-behaved cat was growing impatient.
Fortunately, Shen Yunmiao remained composed. Though the change was sudden and unannounced, she handled it with ease and finished the scene smoothly.
The moment Jian Shen called “cut,” Shen Yunmiao stood up immediately. Jian Shen rose as well, beaming. “Amazing, Yunmiao! I’m telling you, the Best Newcomer award at the Golden Rose is definitely yours!”
She intended to high-five Shen Yunmiao as she approached, but Shen Yunmiao’s gaze never landed on her, brushing past instead.
Jian Shen felt a bit awkward but brushed it off. Just as she was about to say something else, Shen Yunmiao’s voice cut through, icy cold:
“Director Jian, have you seen my cat carrier?”
If one listened closely, her voice trembled slightly.
Jian Shen froze, following Shen Yunmiao’s gaze only to find that the cat carrier, which had been right beside her moments ago, had vanished without a trace.
Flustered, she stammered, “I, oh no, I don’t know! It was just here!”
Yuan Duan, who had also been marveling at Shen Yunmiao’s performance, hurried over upon sensing trouble. “Who took it? Quick, check the surveillance, Director Jian!”
Jian Shen snapped out of her daze at the shout and rushed to have the logistics team pull up the footage. The team scrambled frantically, but the young man in charge of the surveillance system frowned. “Director Jian, it rained yesterday, and the cameras got damaged. The footage is too blurry to see clearly!”
Jian Shen’s vision went dark. She felt like killing him and was certain she was doomed. Shen Yunmiao treasured that cat so much, and despite repeated reminders, she had still managed to lose it. What terrible luck!
Shen Yunmiao, who had been silently following behind, showed no signs of panic or breakdown. Her expression remained calm, her dark eyes reflecting the light from her phone screen. She said softly, “Director Jian, don’t worry. The red string bell on my kitten’s paw is a tracker. We’ll find her soon.”
The man in charge of the surveillance suddenly twitched his hand.
Jian Shen was puzzled inwardly, what bell? Wasn’t that just a forgotten prop?
Watching Shen Yunmiao’s confident expression, she silently swallowed her doubts.
