- Chapter 22 - I Don't Like Xie Fuyun Coming to My House...
Medical University
Jiang Mingyue had just finished her class. Checking her schedule, she saw the afternoon lecture was Physiology and Biochemistry. However, since she needed to accompany Lu Er to the Beijing General Hospital, her mind immediately turned to Xie Fuyun.
[aaa Proxy Student/Driver/Tutor Xie Fuyun: Fine, but I’m not from the Medical University. I’ll need your classmate to meet me at the school gate.]
[Jiang Mingyue: Okay.]
Shortly after, Jiang Mingyue received a call from the front desk. “Eldest Miss, Miss Lu is feeling very unwell. She misses you terribly, but she’s too proud and stubborn to lose face by calling you herself. So, she asked me to convey her meaning: She really, really misses you and hopes you’ll appear by her side the very next second.”
Those certainly weren’t Lu Er’s exact words. But hearing the front desk’s “translation” felt incredibly satisfying.
Jiang Mingyue replied, “Understood.”
An Unwanted Encounter
Jiang Mingyue parked her car in the business district. Just as she stepped out, she ran into Jian Cheng. She intended to pretend she hadn’t seen him.
“Junior Jiang.”
Jiang Mingyue paused, her face blank as she turned back with a hollow, professional smile. Jian Cheng had appeared again. This time, he held a glaringly bright bouquet of red roses, a smug, “victory is mine” grin plastered on his face as he strode toward her.
“Junior Jiang, wait a moment.” Jian Cheng blocked her car door, forcefully shoving the roses toward her. “I was too abrupt before. But after going back and thinking for a long time, there are things I must say to you in person.”
Jiang Mingyue took a step back to create distance, her voice cold and detached. “Senior Jian Cheng, I believe I made myself very clear on WeChat. I have someone I like. Please stop doing these pointless things.”
Jian Cheng remained deaf to her refusal. He curled his lips into what he thought was a dashing smile, his eyes filled with the typical aggression of an Alpha. “Junior Jiang, don’t be so cold. I know there hasn’t been another Alpha around you. This person you supposedly ‘like’ have you just not caught them yet? Or are they just a shield?”
Jiang Mingyue’s patience evaporated instantly, her mind was entirely on Lu Lingzhi. “It has nothing to do with you.”
“Then give me a chance to prove it. If you become my lover, you can use me to provoke the Alpha you actually like,” Jian Cheng suggested, convinced this was a win-win solution. As he spoke, he pressed another step forward.
Simultaneously, a wave of A-grade Alpha pheromones, the hallucinogenic, cloyingly sweet scent of Datura enveloped Jiang Mingyue. Her expression darkened. A wave of dizziness hit her, she tried to retreat, but her body faltered under the disorienting impact of the pheromones.
“Jian Cheng, take your pheromones back,” Jiang Mingyue demanded, enduring the discomfort. “I’ve already kissed my Alpha. Why would I want to make the person I love jealous?”
“What? Kissed?!” Jian Cheng looked as if he’d heard the world’s biggest joke. His eyes widened, his face etched with shock, disbelief, and a hint of humiliated rage. “Junior Jiang, you’re making up such lies just to reject me?”
He couldn’t accept it. His emotions spiked, causing the Datura pheromones to become thick and chaotic. Desperate for proof, he reached out to grab Jiang Mingyue’s shoulder.
Dizzy and nauseous from the pheromones, the world began to spin for Jiang Mingyue, and she stumbled.
The Intervention
In the split second before Jian Cheng’s hand could touch her, a water bottle cap struck him in the face, forcing him back. A slender figure appeared, holding a freshly opened bottle of mineral water.
SPLASH!!!
Icy cold water cascaded over Jian Cheng’s head like a waterfall. The liquid instantly soaked his hair and cheeks, leaving him frozen in place like a drowned rat.
Jian Cheng was stunned by the sudden chill, reflexively shaking his head as water droplets flew everywhere.
[Splash…]
Time seemed to hit a strange rewind button.
1 minute ago: “I’ve already kissed my Alpha…” “What? Kissed?! You’re lying!…” “Jian Cheng, I told you I have an Alpha…”
A bottle cap hit Jian Cheng’s face, followed by a bottle of ice water poured over his head. This loop repeated five times, a stacking debuff of damage.
By the time the five cycles ended, Jian Cheng’s face was swollen, and he was shivering violently from the cold.
Fighting through the vertigo and the nausea induced by the pheromones, Jiang Mingyue finally recognized the person standing a few paces away: Xie Fuyun.
“Meeting again?” Xie Fuyun adjusted her silver-rimmed glasses, her tone flat. She seemingly hadn’t noticed that the water-pouring incident had looped five times. Her gaze swept over the dazed Jian Cheng on the ground before returning to Jiang Mingyue.
“Thank you,” Jiang Mingyue said gratefully. “What are you doing here?”
Holding Lu Lingzhi’s books, Xie Fuyun explained, “I took a proxy class this morning for someone named Lu Lingzhi. I was just coming to return her books.”
“Mingyue!” A voice filled with obvious anxiety called out from a distance.
Lu Lingzhi ran over, clearly having rushed down directly from the apartment building, her cheeks flushed from the sprint. She saw Jiang Mingyue’s pale face and ignored both the pathetic Jian Cheng and Xie Fuyun. She checked Mingyue over urgently. “Are you alright? Did he bully you?”
The undisguised concern and tension in Lu Lingzhi’s voice warmed Jiang Mingyue’s heart, and her dizziness seemed to fade. She shook her head with a forced, reassuring smile. “I’m fine. It was thanks to Miss Xie’s help this time.”
Xie Fuyun is here too… she’s getting in the way of me saving Mingyue.
“I must have forgotten to check the almanac today, two annoying pests in one go.”
Lu Lingzhi couldn’t vent her frustration on Xie Fuyun, who had technically helped, so her pent-up rage needed a different outlet. She spun around abruptly and delivered a fierce kick to the shin of Jian Cheng, who was still slumped on the ground.
“Urgh!” Jian Cheng curled up in agony.
“Jian Cheng, if you ever dare to harass Mingyue again, I’ll have the police come and haul you away.”
Only after the kick did Lu Lingzhi feel a slight sense of relief. Jiang Mingyue gestured toward Xie Fuyun.
“Thank you,” Lu Lingzhi said, extending her hand. Her tone was polite but carried a distinct coldness. “Give me the things.” She was referring to the books in Xie Fuyun’s other hand that clearly belonged to her.
She had no intention of letting this “Godmother” whose identity was far too complicated have any more contact with Jiang Mingyue. Especially not at a time like this.
Xie Fuyun’s gaze lingered on Lu Lingzhi’s face for a moment. Behind her silver frames, her eyes flickered with a hint of understanding, or perhaps something else entirely. She didn’t hand over the books immediately instead, she turned to Jiang Mingyue and asked with a smile, “Miss Jiang, could I go to your place for a glass of water? Just to catch my breath.”
[System Announcement: Mama, Jiang Mingyue’s favorability toward Xie Fuyun has increased by 40 points.]
Lu Lingzhi: “No.” Jiang Mingyue: “You may.”
Jiang Mingyue figured that Xie Fuyun had indeed been a huge help just now. Offering a glass of water was basic courtesy.
Hearing Jiang Mingyue agree made Lu Lingzhi panic. She grabbed Jiang Mingyue’s arm and lowered her voice, winking and signaling frantically: “Jiang Mingyue, how can you let a stranger into our home? I don’t like strangers.”
She emphasized the word “stranger” with extra bite.
[System Announcement: Mama, your favorability toward Xie Fuyun has decreased by 40 points.]
Watching Lu Lingzhi act like a cat with its fur standing on end, combined with the fact that Xie Fuyun was an Alpha, an uncontrollable thought popped into Jiang Mingyue’s head: Is Lu Er jealous?
This realization was like a tiny spark, instantly igniting a dark, hidden corner of her heart. It even seemed to alleviate her physical discomfort from the pheromones. She raised an eyebrow and intentionally leaned closer. “What? Is it because I’m so charming that you’re jealous?”
“I am not!” Lu Lingzhi denied it, yet she clung to Jiang Mingyue’s arm as if afraid she’d be snatched away. She didn’t forget to continue slandering Xie Fuyun: “I just don’t like her. She has terrible character.”
Jiang Mingyue reached back and gently patted the hand Lu Lingzhi had clamped onto her arm. She hasn’t even become an Alpha yet, but she already has the possessiveness of one.
“It’s just a glass of water, don’t be so stingy. Miss Xie did help us.”
