- Chapter 20 - Crossdressing
Wen Yuluo stopped eating, his expression hesitant. Finally, under Zilan’s expectant gaze, he said, “I am a guy. Sleeping Beauty is a female role.”
“So what?!” Zilan was extremely excited. “I am a girl. Am I prettier than you? You trim your brows, put on a bit of lip color, add a head of long hair, and who could tell if you are a man or a woman?”
The whole school was going to watch the play, and making him dress in a skirt to play a girl in front of everyone was a level of embarrassment he simply couldn’t handle.
Wen Yuluo refused. “Let us just forget it. Qi You would think I am a weirdo.”
“Just think of it as sacrificing yourself for art,” Zilan said, seeing Wen Yuluo’s lack of enthusiasm, before shifting her approach. “If you do not want to try, then you can just watch Crown Prince Qi kissing some other girl later.”
Wen Yuluo was torn and hesitant, but in the end, he still didn’t agree.
When selection day arrived, the entire campus was filled with people wearing bizarre costumes. Word was that the principal had issued a hard-and-fast directive: the class that put on the best play would be awarded a special honor prize.
The principal was personally footing the bill to treat the winning class to a seafood feast, a perk completely unheard of in the past. As a result, many classes pulled out all the stops, even coming up with original scripts.
Wen Yuluo was staring in shock at the absurd campus when he failed to notice a girl wearing a fairy costume walking past him. The fairy seemed to have forgotten about the large wings on his back and didn’t swerve around, and since Wen Yuluo didn’t dodge either, the wings brushed directly against him.
Feeling resistance as he walked, the fairy turned around, his wings stuck on something. “Sorry about that. I keep forgetting I’m wearing a costume.”
Wen Yuluo appraised his face on the side. Clearly it was a girl’s appearance, but the voice… how was the voice?
So deep!
If you have a question, you should ask it. That’s what his elementary school teacher taught him.
Wen Yuluo gave a light cough and asked, “Pardon me for asking, classmate, are you a guy or a girl?”
After struggling for a good while, the fairy finally managed to detach his wings and smiled. “Looks like this outfit of mine is truly convincing if you couldn’t even tell.”
So he was a guy.
Wait, what on earth was wrong with this world?
Stunned into speechlessness, Wen Yuluo listened as the fairy continued, “I’m not a weirdo. It’s just that our class has fewer girls and we couldn’t find a suitable person, so I had to step in.” He gestured toward a group of people near the diagonal staircase. “They’re guys too.”
Wen Yuluo followed the fairy’s gesture and looked over. One by one, they were wearing little skirts with delicate, pretty faces, looking no different from real girls.
Wen Yuluo’s mouth twitched as he asked, “Don’t you guys feel awkward or embarrassed at all?”
“What’s there to be embarrassed about? It’s what the role requires,” the fairy said. “And nobody is giving us malicious looks either. Take you, for instance, classmate. Do you think me dressing like this is laughable?”
Wen Yuluo looked him over once more before concluding, “No. It looks good.”
Satisfied with the compliment, the fairy walked away.
Wen Yuluo’s mind suddenly cleared up.
“Yubao!” His shoulder was heavily patted. Zilan appeared behind him, wearing a maid outfit.
Wen Yuluo had never seen Zilan dressed like this. He stared for a couple of seconds before asking in confusion, “Zilan, why are you dressed like this too?”
“Don’t even get me started,” Zilan said. “Is the principal out of his mind? It’s just a normal welcome party, but he insists on setting up some honor prize. Now every class is fighting for it, our class chorus was canceled and turned into a play, and I just finished trying out for a role.”
“Haha!” Wen Yuluo tilted his head. “This actually suits you pretty well.”
“Suits my foot!” Zilan gritted her teeth. “All morning, your big sister here has already stepped on her skirt six times. Alright, enough of that. Which classroom is your class holding auditions in? I’ve got nothing to do, so I’ll tag along to watch the fun.”
“Building A, Room 307.”
As the assistant director, Wen Yuluo had to coordinate with the director for auditions. He had wasted time on the way, and glancing at his watch, he realized he was about to be late. He grabbed Zilan and rushed toward Room 307.
Stepping into the classroom just as the bell rang, he saw that Xie Xia had already set the place up nicely. It actually looked the part.
Zilan waved at Xie Xia. “Xie Bao, I heard your class has an exchange student bonus. Doesn’t that mean this honor prize belongs to your class for sure?”
Xie Xia stared at Zilan in a daze for a moment before bursting into loud laughter upon realization. “Why are you dressed like this? You scared the hell out of me. Hurry up and get out of here, don’t stall me from working.”
“Damn it!” Zilan raged. “You weren’t even as tall as me back in high school. Now that you’ve grown up, is your skin itching or something? Have you forgotten who came to your rescue when you got cornered in an alley?”
Sitting beside Xie Xia, Wen Yuluo watched the two of them bicker and smiled helplessly. The three of them had been classmates in high school and ended up at the same university. What kind of fate was this…
A miserable fate.
Xie Xia urged anxiously, “Keep your voice down, don’t let people in our class hear!”
“Hear what?” Dai Qin walked in through the front door. “I could hear the monitor’s voice from a mile away.”
“Still taking your sweet time even when you’re late?” Dai Qin was the last person missing. Seeing everyone present, Xie Xia began the audition process.
With strong leadership skills, Xie Xia ran things smoothly while Wen Yuluo assisted him on the side. The room operated in an orderly fashion, and an hour later, most of the roles had been decided.
“Alright,” Xie Xia looked at the character sheet. “Last one, Her Royal Highness the Princess! Everyone trying out for this role, go change your clothes!”
Every single girl in the class stood up in unison.
Xie Xia yawned. “I knew it. The princess role was definitely going to be the hardest to lock down.”
Without making a sound, Zilan pinched Wen Yuluo’s palm and whispered, “Yubao, you really aren’t going to try?”
Wen Yuluo was still a bit shy, stiffly saying, “Wait. Let’s see how it goes.”
After all, the princess was the main lead, so Xie Xia didn’t dare be sloppy. He was much more meticulous than he had been when casting supporting roles. Out of the sixteen girls in the class, he passed on ten. He wasn’t entirely satisfied with the remaining six either; the custom school-issued princess costumes came in a single standard size, and the girls were either too skinny to fill them out, too short so the skirts dragged on the floor, or their expressions were too stiff and lacked liveliness.
Massaging his temples in frustration, Xie Xia muttered, “Should we just go borrow a princess from another class?”
Enjoying his predicament, Zilan gloated, “Borrow from where? Don’t you know other classes are so short on people they’re resorting to crossdressing?”
“Crossdressing?” Xie Xia suddenly had a breakthrough. “That’s a great idea!”
Wen Yuluo’s entire body tensed up.
“Dai Qin!” Xie Xia roared.
Dai Qin, who was sneakingly playing on his phone in the corner, slowly raised his head.
“Go try on the princess dress. You’re the only soft-skinned male omega in the whole class, you’ve got to take responsibility for this.”
“Huh?” Dai Qin wore a face full of question marks. “Me? Monitor, don’t use public office to settle personal grudges! The worst I can do is promise not to be late or leave early, and hand in my homework on time from now on, okay?”
