- Chapter 18 - Barely Good Enough to Enter My Fish Pond
Lu Baihai had two small canine teeth, and when he smiled, he looked completely harmless and approachable, much easier to get along with than Qi You, who wore a cold face most of the time.
He sat down on Wen Yuluo’s other side and pulled out his phone. “Xiao Yu, you’re from the student union, right? Can we add each other on WeChat? Qi You and I are new here, and everything is unfamiliar to us. We really need a friend from the student union!”
He and Qi You had reported to the student union the moment they arrived at Yan University. How could they possibly not have the student union president’s WeChat?
Wen Yuluo was frequently hit on by others and understood this was just an excuse to get his WeChat.
Although he didn’t know why Lu Baihai wanted to add him, he still took out his phone. “Sure.”
Qi You watched coldly from the side, catching a glimpse of Wen Yuluo’s phone wallpaper.
It was a pot of mint and a night-blooming cereus.
He narrowed his eyes. So the mint scent on Wen Yuluo came from the plants he raised.
After adding Lu Baihai on WeChat, Wen Yuluo clutched his phone and looked over at Qi You.
His gaze darkened as he mustered the courage to ask, “Senior Qi, would the two of us like to add each other too?”
Qi You rarely added people on WeChat. He froze for a moment before replying, “I didn’t bring my phone.”
Wen Yuluo understood instantly. When Qi You didn’t want to add someone, he would use that excuse.
Fair enough, considering he and Qi You had only met twice including the day before yesterday. What right did he have to ask for his WeChat?
Wen Yuluo smiled bitterly, suddenly feeling as though the air around him had frozen solid. He stood up from the spectator seats. “Ah, what bad timing. I just remembered I have things to do, so I’ll be leaving first.”
Hearing that, Qi You tucked his long legs back and watched as Wen Yuluo hurried away as if fleeing.
“Isn’t your phone right in your pocket?” Lu Baihai asked.
Qi You’s gaze remained indifferent. He quietly looked at Lu Baihai’s phone, where Wen Yuluo’s friend request interface was still open. Wen Yuluo’s WeChat profile picture was a collection of colorful chemical reagents from a laboratory, and his display name was a single character: Tan.
Combined with his phone wallpaper, Wen Yuluo seemed to really like the night-blooming cereus.
It wasn’t until Lu Baihai pressed the button to turn off his phone screen that Qi You snapped back to reality. “When did you get interested in Betas?”
Lu Baihai laughed. “How did you know I was interested in him? Was it that obvious?”
Qi You remarked, “You added him using your secondary account. I remember that account is specifically used for keeping spare options in your fish pond, right?”
“Those who know me best are always Qi You.” Lu Baihai flashed his white teeth. “I might not be interested in Betas, but this Wen Yuluo is so pretty, he’s barely good enough to enter my fish pond.”
Qi You.
Ever since the parting at the basketball court, another week had passed, and Wen Yuluo finally understood why Lu Baihai had added him on WeChat. He would find any excuse to invite him out for meals or movies, and his messages felt mass-sent, clearly treating him like just another fish in his pond.
Gradually, Wen Yuluo stopped replying to him, and Lu Baihai eventually weeded him out of his fish pond.
It had been a full week, and Wen Yuluo found himself staring at photos of chance encounters with Qi You on the campus BBS, turning green with envy. Why couldn’t he ever run into him by chance?
Then again, Qi You wasn’t even in his grade or major, and Xingyan was so massive that the probability of the two of them walking the exact same path was practically zero point zero zero zero zero one percent.
Thinking of this, he let out a sigh.
“Group leader, what is with you? Letting out such long sighs?”
Wen Yuluo tilted his head. It was Dai Qin, the other Omega in his study group.
Come to think of it, it was strange; there were only two Omegas in the entire class, and both ended up assigned to his group.
Wen Yuluo shook his head. “Nothing.”
Dai Qin clicked his tongue. “Don’t lie. I’ve been watching you space out for ten full minutes. What are you thinking about? Did you fall in love or something?”
“Is there anything else in your head besides romance?” Wen Yuluo handed him the group’s homework submission roster. “You’re the only one who hasn’t submitted yet.”
Dai Qin pouted. “Hey now, can we not have a normal conversation? You can’t go two sentences without nagging about homework.”
“Group leader, I honestly think you should go get checked out at a hospital. You’re twenty years old, right in the prime of your youth, yet you act like a meditating monk.”
Wen Yuluo asked with a puzzled look, “Why would you say that?”
Dai Qin pulled out his phone, opened the BBS right in front of Wen Yuluo, and showed him a bookmarked post.
OP: Ahhhhhhhhhhh!! Senior Qi playing basketball is so cool, the way he drinks water is insanely sexy!
He pointed at the blurred figure in the picture. “Is this you?”
Wen Yuluo hadn’t expected Qi You’s fan girls to be quite so considerate as to actually mosaic him. “It’s me.”
Dai Qin exclaimed, “Qi You was sitting right next to you! Qi You, for goodness’ sake! A top-tier Alpha, and you actually ran away without looking back?!”
That was because Qi You had rejected his request to add him on WeChat back then, leaving his self-esteem shattered so he couldn’t bear to stay a second longer.
Still, had he known that running away meant not seeing him for a whole week, he would have stayed a bit longer.
Wen Yuluo said, “There was nothing to talk about. Sitting next to him brings a ton of pressure, you know.”
Dai Qin begged pathetically, “Please, pass that pressure onto me, thanks.”
“Still, group leader, how did you even meet Qi You? Your relationship seems pretty good. Was that water he drank yours?”
The mere thought of Qi You’s bobbing Adam’s apple made Wen Yuluo’s face flush red again. He coughed to cover it up. “We’re not close. I just saw him in the student union.”
“Is it still time to join the student union now?!”
“Dai Qin!”
Xie Xia shouted from the podium. “You’re the only one making all the noise in the classroom. If you want to mess around, fine, but don’t drag the people around you into it.”
Dai Qin protested unfairly, “Class monitor, isn’t your bias a bit too obvious? Clearly, Yuluo and I were chatting together. Not only do you give him a pass, but you’re blaming me for leading him astray.”
Someone nearby chuckled. “Didn’t you know the class monitor is famously double-standarded? He treats Yuluo and the rest of us with two completely different sets of rules.”
People around the classroom started hooting again, and Wen Yuluo, used to it by now, quietly lowered his head.
“Alright, stop messing around,” Xie Xia clapped his hands, drawing everyone’s attention back. “Let’s talk about something. Two exchange students recently arrived at the school. You’ve all heard about it, right?”
“Heard about it.”
For once, the class actually answered in unison. Xie Xia smiled. “When the school officially releases announcements normally, nobody cares, but the moment two handsome guys transfer over, you all get so energetic.”
Sour-grape Alphas chimed in, “A bunch of flirty girls and guys, probably dying to lick their boots.”
Wen Yuluo frowned, and just as he was about to speak, Dai Qin piped up, “Ha! Luckily these two are Alphas. If two delicate little Omegas had dared to show up, you lot and your sour, stinking Alpha pheromones would probably be circulating the entire campus.”
“Agreed!”
“Agreed!”
“Totally agree!”
“If you’re jealous of them, just say it. Stop beating around the bush to mock us.”
Seeing another gender debate about to erupt, Xie Xia let out a helpless sigh. “Cut it out! No attacking genders. Some of you Alphas watch yourselves too, don’t embarrass us.”
Wen Yuluo quickly steered the topic back on track. “Class monitor, what’s this actually about? What does it have to do with the exchange students?”
