- Chapter 36 - Deep Mansion 15
Shao Xibei held Pei Xi’s trembling body in her arms, her gaze sweeping coldly over Wang Chen’s corpse.
An idea came to her.
Shao Xibei gently pushed Pei Xi back, staring into her eyes with a tender gaze.
“Pei Xi, wait for me here for a moment.”
Pei Xi nodded slowly, then wrapped her arms around herself, seeking some small measure of comfort.
Shao Xibei went to the table and bit down hard on her index finger. She pulled a piece of paper from her robe, placed it on the table, and used her blood to draw a talisman.
She then returned to Pei Xi and knelt down.
“Pei Xi, take off your bridal gown.”
Pei Xi was dazed, not understanding why, but she followed Shao Xibei’s instructions and removed the wedding dress.
Shao Xibei took the gown, placed it next to Wang Chen, and pressed the talisman onto the inside of the fabric.
She began to chant an incantation.
Pei Xi watched from the side, her emotions stretched so thin that any slight disturbance could have caused her to collapse.
Slowly, the wedding dress began to swell.
Unexpectedly, a figure appeared—an exact likeness of Pei Xi wearing the bridal gown.
Its eyes were tightly shut and its face was devoid of color; it lay there lifelike, appearing exactly like a real person.
Shao Xibei picked up a shard of broken porcelain and, without hesitation, slashed the throat of the double.
She made it look like a suicide.
Pei Xi opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
In her state of extreme terror, she had been rendered temporarily mute.
Shao Xibei walked over, pulled Pei Xi close, and slid her arms under the girl’s knees, lifting her into a horizontal carry.
Terrified, Pei Xi gripped Shao Xibei’s collar tightly.
Shao Xibei lowered her gaze. “We can’t stay here. Hold on tight, Pei Xi.”
Pei Xi’s grip was so forceful that her knuckles had turned white.
Shao Xibei carried Pei Xi out of the room. Wang Chen had driven all the servants away earlier, which allowed Shao Xibei to move so boldly.
Holding Pei Xi with one arm, she used her other hand to pull the door shut.
“Close your eyes.”
As soon as she spoke, Shao Xibei exerted force through her feet and leaped directly over the wall.
There was no one around here, but she couldn’t let Pei Xi remain in this state forever.
She had to get Pei Xi out of there.
That illusion would only fool ordinary people; it would certainly have no effect on Pei Ming.
When the time came, if Pei Ming spoke the truth, Pei Xi would never survive. The Wang family would never let her go, and the Pei family would never protect her.
Shao Xibei chanted a long, low incantation.
Spiritual power enveloped the two of them.
In an instant, their figures vanished from the spot.
Shao Xibei walked rapidly while carrying Pei Xi; maintaining invisibility required an immense amount of spiritual energy and physical strength.
Her current body was truly weak. Shao Xibei couldn’t help but cough a few times, forcefully suppressing the metallic taste of blood in her throat.
Fortunately, Pei Xi was thin and small.
Shao Xibei carried Pei Xi to the outskirts of Yuzhou City.
By now, the sky was turning to dusk.
Pei Xi hadn’t made a sound the entire way, but her warm tears had soaked through Shao Xibei’s clothes.
Shao Xibei sighed inwardly.
She carried Pei Xi into a ruined temple.
With her current physical condition, it had been no easy feat to endure for this long.
Her physical strength had reached its limit. After placing Pei Xi steadily on the ground, her legs buckled. She nearly collapsed, but managed to end up half-kneeling in front of Pei Xi.
She touched the top of Pei Xi’s head soothingly, her voice incredibly gentle: “It’s alright. It’s over now.”
Pei Xi had suppressed her emotions throughout the journey, but now, in front of Shao Xibei, she could no longer hold back.
She burst into tears. The more she cried, the louder she became, collapsing into total despair.
For the first time, she showed such a fragile side of herself to someone else, looking as helpless as if she were about to shatter.
Shao Xibei felt a strange ache in her heart. She opened her arms and completely enveloped Pei Xi’s trembling body.
Resting her palm on the girl’s back, she patted her gently.
“It’s alright.” Shao Xibei whispered those three words softly into Pei Xi’s ear over and over again.
After an unknown amount of time, Pei Xi finally cried herself to sleep.
Shao Xibei gently picked Pei Xi up, found a relatively level spot to lay her down, and then took off her own outer coat to cover the girl.
No longer able to suppress the metallic taste in her throat, Shao Xibei ran out of the ruined temple and spat out a large mouthful of fresh blood. A violent, searing pain in her chest followed immediately.
She clenched her fists tightly, waiting for the agony to pass.
It took quite a while before the sharp pain gradually faded, leaving Shao Xibei gasping for air.
Damn it, what a useless body, she thought.
After cleaning the blood off herself, Shao Xibei returned to the temple. Using the last remnants of her spiritual power and her finger—the wound on which had not yet healed—she drew a talisman on the wall of the temple.
She sat down on the ground beside Pei Xi, leaning her back against the wall. Looking down, she noticed Pei Xi’s brow was still tightly furrowed in her sleep.
Gently lifting the edge of the coat covering her, Shao Xibei saw the wounds on Pei Xi’s hands.
Shao Xibei shook her head. She tore a strip of cloth from her own clothing to give the girl a simple bandage, then pulled the coat back up to cover her completely.
This child has truly suffered today. If only I had noticed sooner, Shao Xibei thought as exhaustion finally overwhelmed her. She slowly closed her eyes.
11:00 PM (Sishi Banke)
The moon hung high in the night sky.
The Wang couple had finally seen off all the guests who had come to offer their congratulations. They realized that their youngest son had been missing since the afternoon.
Madam Wang couldn’t help but complain a little.
She said to Master Wang, “Chen’er is really too much. The girl belongs to the Wang family now anyway, so how could he not spare even a little time for the guests?”
“Those guests didn’t even get to see the bride, and the groom might as well have been dead for all the appearance he made.”
Master Wang laughed heartily. “Haha, Madam, you just don’t understand. I was exactly like Chen’er back in the day. With a beautiful bride waiting, how could he not be in a hurry?”
Madam Wang rolled her eyes. “No, I have to go check on him. I just don’t feel right about this.”
Master Wang said, “They are newlyweds, deeply in love. Why are you interfering?”
Madam Wang ignored him and called for her maid. “Chunhong, come. Accompany me to see the Young Master.”
“Yes, Madam.”
Master Wang was somewhat annoyed by this and let out a huff, but he followed them anyway.
The group arrived at Wang Chen’s bedroom.
Madam Wang called out from outside first. Seeing there was no answer, she sent someone to knock on the door. To her surprise, the door creaked open at the slightest touch.
The sense of foreboding in Madam Wang’s heart grew stronger.
She called out again, “Chen’er, it’s Mother. Are you resting?”
No answer.
After another long moment, Madam Wang called out once more, “Chen’er, could you come out for a moment?”
Still, there was only silence.
Madam Wang took a long stride forward and pushed the door wide open. The room was pitch black, but the overwhelming stench of blood that rushed out made her breath hitch.
Her voice trembled. “Chun… Chunhong, take the lantern and… and light the candles in the room.”
Chunhong carried the lantern and stepped slowly into the room. The light from the lantern wasn’t strong, but it was enough to reveal the contents of the dim chamber.
Chunhong took one look and let out a piercing scream that echoed through the entire Wang manor.
“Madam! The Young Master… the Young Master is dead!!!”
Through the faint light of the lantern, Madam Wang finally saw the state of the room.
She nearly fainted on the spot.
She rushed forward, pushing Chunhong aside, and threw herself onto Wang Chen’s corpse, wailing instantly: “My Chen’er!! How could this happen!! My Chen’er…”
