- Chapter 35 - Deep Mansion 14
Shao Xibei galloped all the way, hoping to find Pei Xi as soon as possible.
Finally, she saw the Wang residence in the distance, decorated with lanterns and streamers, featuring a massive plaque inscribed with the words “Wang Manor.”
This had to be the place.
Shao Xibei stood a short distance away. The gates of the Wang Manor were wide open, and well-dressed people laughed and chatted as they entered and exited.
She didn’t intend to enter through the front door. Surveying the surroundings, she noted that the perimeter walls weren’t particularly high—perhaps a challenge for an ordinary person, but for Shao Xibei, it was effortless.
Finding a secluded spot, she first used her spiritual power to sense that no one was on the other side. With a single leap, her body felt as though it were being propelled by the wind as she flew into the manor’s courtyard.
She was moving entirely by the push of her spiritual energy.
Standing inside the courtyard, Shao Xibei looked at the festive red decorations and sneered inwardly. She had never seen a wedding conducted like this—completely without notifying the bride or giving her any time to prepare.
She planned to question the servants. Although her spiritual power was formidable at the moment, her physical body remained weak. While she could find Pei Xi instantly by flooding the entire manor with her spiritual sense, she wasn’t sure her body could withstand the strain. She feared that if her physical health failed, she wouldn’t be able to carry Pei Xi away.
She occasionally encountered servants scurrying about. Seeing Shao Xibei’s refined temperament and attire, they assumed she was a guest and answered her questions dutifully.
Wang Chen smiled as he bid farewell to the last guest offering congratulations. He then hurried toward his bridal chamber.
It wasn’t even the Hour of the Rabbit (5:00 AM – 7:00 AM) yet, but his heart was already racing with impatience. Ever since that first breathtaking glimpse of her, he had kept those clear, translucent eyes in the back of his mind. It wasn’t the affection of a lover, but rather the thrill of a hunter finding a prize.
Two maidservants stood guard at his bedroom door; they quickly bowed upon seeing him.
Wang Chen waved them away with a flick of his hand.
He pushed the door open gently and immediately saw Pei Xi sitting on the bed. She was dressed in a red wedding gown, her face hidden beneath a red bridal veil.
Everyone in Yuzhou City knew he had beaten several servants to death and suspected his first wife had died by his hand as well. Those suspicions were facts—that “wretched woman” had indeed been beaten to death by him.
Wang Chen knew his reputation in Yuzhou was foul; despite his family’s wealth, no woman was willing to be his wife. Yet, the Pei family—knowing exactly what kind of man he was—had pushed their own daughter toward him anyway.
Even the wedding date had been changed on a whim. There were no “Three Letters and Six Rites,” no “Eight-Carrier Sedan Chair,” and no “Phoenix Coronet.” Nothing. The second miss of the Pei family had simply been sent to the Wang house to be wed to him, Wang Chen, as his second wife.
It was clear the Pei family didn’t care at all about Pei Xi’s feelings.
At the thought of those eyes soon shedding crystalline tears, Wang Chen’s breathing quickened.
He entered the room and slowly closed the door. The slight click of the latch reached Pei Xi’s ears.
Her body shuddered. Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps drew near.
“Sister Xi, we are finally married,” Wang Chen said, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
Pei Xi bit her lip hard. Her face was deathly pale. Her hands and feet were bound tightly, and her wrists were already bleeding from her frantic attempts to struggle free.
As the footsteps grew closer, her trembling intensified.
Why is Mother doing this to me?
Pei Xi’s trembling only served to heighten Wang Chen’s excitement. His first wife had trembled just like this, pleading with him in her helpless misery.
Wang Chen reached Pei Xi’s side and snatched away the red veil.
Suddenly exposed to the light, Pei Xi’s eyes squinted against the stimulus, and tears spilled over.
She had been meticulously made up today. Her usually messy bangs had been trimmed, revealing exquisite brows and eyes. A beautiful small flower had been painted on her forehead, adding a touch of elegance to her features.
Her pale lips were painted with bright red rouge, and her white skin contrasted sharply with the crimson wedding dress. In the dimly lit room, Pei Xi looked vividly alive and alluring.
Wang Chen’s expression turned fanatical. “Sister Xi, don’t be afraid. I’ll take good care of you.”
Fear submerged her entirely. She struggled with all her might, even as the ropes bit deep into her flesh.
Why would Mother do this? Why…
Wang Chen reached out both hands, trembling as he moved toward Pei Xi’s collar. The emotion in his eyes made her feel nauseated.
Her body shook even more violently.
She couldn’t understand why her mother had treated her this way. It felt as if a knife were scraping against her heart; the pain spread through her limbs and bones.
Pei Xi’s eyes began to lose their luster.
Will anyone come to save me? Will Concubine [Auntie] come?
No… how could anyone come for me? No one likes me.
Something inside her heart seemed to break open.
Suddenly, Pei Xi felt a massive surge of power erupt within her body.
With a forceful jerk, the ropes that had bound her hands and feet for so long actually snapped.
In that lightning-fast moment, Pei Xi lunged to her feet. She grabbed a wine bottle from the table and, before Wang Chen could react, smashed it violently against his head.
CRASH! The ceramic bottle shattered into pieces, and blood began to flow down Wang Chen’s forehead.
However, he remained standing.
After this sudden burst of action, Pei Xi realized her strength had vanished as quickly as it had appeared. Her legs went weak, and she couldn’t stop them from shaking.
Wang Chen wiped his forehead with his sleeve. A roaring fury ignited in his heart, and he growled, “You damn bitch, I’ll beat you to death!”
With a roar, Wang Chen lunged forward, pinning Pei Xi down. He gripped her slender neck tightly with his hands.
“You whore! I’m going to break you today until you’re completely submissive!”
He used one hand to start tearing at her collar, while Pei Xi desperately used her hands to hold her clothes together.
Her cheeks had begun to turn purple; the strength of a malnourished sixteen-year-old girl was utterly pathetic against the power of a grown man.
From the corner of her eye, Pei Xi noticed a shard of porcelain from the bottle she had just shattered. She slowly extended her hand and gripped the fragment. While Wang Chen’s attention was entirely consumed by his assault on her, she thrust the shard into his neck with all her might.
Blood spurted out instantly. With a heavy thud, Wang Chen collapsed onto the floor.
Her neck finally freed, Pei Xi coughed so violently she could barely catch her breath.
She stared at the blood on her hands. Beside her, Wang Chen’s body lay twitching on the ground, blood gushing in great torrents from his throat.
Trembling, Pei Xi wrapped her arms around herself and slowly crouched down. She—she had killed someone.
Intense terror and a sickening nausea churned within her. The horror clung to her entire body like flesh and bone.
I killed him… I killed him!
Pei Xi pressed her lips together tightly and buried her head between her knees, her hands clutching her skull as if to keep it from shattering.
…She had killed a man.
Shao Xibei suddenly caught the scent of blood. The ominous premonition in her heart flared, and she followed the metallic tang until she found a room with the character for “Double Happiness” pasted on the door.
Without a second thought, she kicked the door open.
Inside, she saw Pei Xi huddled on the floor, hugging herself tightly, while the now-heartless body of Wang Chen lay nearby.
Hearing the door burst open, Pei Xi gripped the porcelain shard tighter, ignoring the fact that her own hand was bleeding.
Shao Xibei crossed the room in a few strides and reached Pei Xi. Just as she was about to speak, Pei Xi swung out blindly with the shard.
Shao Xibei easily caught Pei Xi’s wrist and said softly, “Pei Xi, don’t be afraid. It’s me.”
Pei Xi’s unfocused eyes slowly began to reflect Shao Xibei’s face. Her hand relaxed, and the porcelain shard fell to the floor.
“Why did you take so long to get here?” she rasped, her voice hoarse and broken.
“I killed someone… I killed someone… I killed someone—”
Pei Xi’s hysterical, heart-wrenching state sent a sharp pang of pain through Shao Xibei’s heart. She opened her arms and pulled Pei Xi into a firm embrace.
She gently stroked the back of Pei Xi’s head.
“I’m sorry, Pei Xi. I’m so sorry… I came too late.”
