- Chapter 44 - Are You Two Trying for a Baby?
Ye Qingfeng was the first to voice his support, and with him taking the lead, no one else could say much. Seeing the others nod in agreement, Xiang Hai could only swallow his frustration.
The reason Xiang Hai targeted Yu Wenxi was because, back then, he had confessed to her as well—only to be rejected publicly. Feeling humiliated, he had turned his bruised pride into resentment toward her.
After the staff finished installing the cameras, the livestream finally began.
【Wuhu, look at this crowd—nothing but big shots!】
【Big shots? I don’t recognize a single one.】
【If they’re in the same class as Xixi, their backgrounds must be impressive.】
Once Yan Run and Yu Wenxi took their seats, no one dared to call Yu Wenxi aloof or haughty like they had earlier. After all, Yan Run had a certain unapproachable air herself. But when Yan Run took the initiative to start a conversation, she came across as warm and easygoing, and the atmosphere gradually relaxed.
“What were you saying about a dog? Did someone bring a pet?” Yan Run asked.
No one answered right away, until Meng Qieyi spoke up. “I was just saying I wanted to get a dog.”
Yan Run turned to Yu Wenxi with a smile. “I’ve never had a dog either, Jie. Maybe sometime we can go see what kind of dog to get?”
Yu Wenxi’s lips curved. “If we end up having a baby, a dog might not be the best idea.”
Yan Run nodded—she had a point.
Finally, someone perked up and asked, “Wait… are you two trying for a baby right now?”
Yu Wenxi answered simply, “That’s right.”
A ripple of surprise ran through the group. Wasn’t Yan Run supposed to be unable to conceive? Could that have just been a rumor? After all, both the Yu and Yan families would have thought through such a marriage carefully—if one side couldn’t have children, would they have gone through with it?
Soon, the congratulations came in from all sides—everyone except Xiang Hai, who silently sneered to himself. Yan Run looked so frail—who would believe she could carry a pregnancy?
With a dry laugh, Xiang Hai said, “Well then, congratulations! Hopefully by next year we’ll be hearing some good news from the two of you.”
Ye Qingfeng shot him a glare, his tone all polite venom. “Why don’t we just eat? Seems like some people’s mouths could use more food to keep them shut.”
Xiang Hai’s face darkened. “Who are you talking about?”
Yan Run took a sip of tea and said to him with a calm smile, “Brother Xiang, don’t be mad. Classmate Ye wasn’t talking about you—he was talking about me. After all, I skipped breakfast just so I could look a bit slimmer for today’s banquet.”
Laughter erupted around the table. Everyone thought Yan Run was surprisingly funny for someone from a wealthy family, and that Yu Wenxi was lucky to have her.
Throughout the meal, Yan Run kept placing food into Yu Wenxi’s bowl, fussing over her like the perfect, attentive wife.
Some of the guests had watched their previous dating show and couldn’t help but notice the difference. It was hard to say exactly what had changed, but before, it sometimes felt like Yan Run’s affection for Yu
Wenxi was an act. Now, though, her gaze never left Yu Wenxi—she was every inch the lovestruck Alpha wife.
A female classmate clicked her tongue twice. “Miss Yan, you’re even more attentive than my husband—and he’s famous for his ‘devoted husband’ image. Compared to you, I’m starting to think he’s just putting on a show.”
Her husband, sitting right beside her, bristled. “Are you saying I don’t treat you well?” He promptly began piling food into her bowl with exaggerated care—clearly determined to outdo Yan Run.
Yu Wenxi, looking faint and a little listless, murmured, “I want shrimp.”
Yan Run immediately set to work, peeling more than a dozen shrimp and placing them in her bowl. “Is this enough? If not, I’ll peel more.”
A smile finally touched Yu Wenxi’s face.
It really was a case of sweet after bitter.
When Yan Run had lost her memory, she never spared a thought for her. Remembering that made Yu Wenxi’s heart ache a little—but at least now, she had her real Yan Run back.
Meng Qieyi didn’t eat much. She kept glancing at the two of them, wondering if it was that incident that had made Yan Run realize her feelings for Yu Wenxi were real—and why she was now treating her so differently, so much better than before.
Xiang Hai, on the other hand, could not stand seeing Yan Run dote on Yu Wenxi like this. He was convinced he could do better.
With thinly veiled jealousy, he blurted out, “Miss Yan, what’s with you? Back when I watched the dating show, you wouldn’t even hold her hand without hemming and hawing.”
In his jealousy, he forgot all about the cameras. He simply couldn’t stand seeing someone treat Yu Wenxi so well.
【Who is this guy, talking so big?】
【That’s Young Master Xiang—his family’s pretty influential, works with the Gu Group overseas a lot.】
【Oh, so that’s him? I thought he’d be as good-looking as Yan Run. Guess not.】
【He’s classmates with Xixi. Maybe—and I’m just saying—he confessed to her, got rejected, and now he’s just being petty toward our ‘Ergou’?】
【Petty as hell. Doesn’t he already have a society heiress he’s courting? If she sees this, that engagement’s as good as dead.】
Yan Run let out an exaggerated “Ohhh!” of surprise. “So Young Master Xiang watches our dating show too?”
Xiang Hai’s face flushed. He retorted, “Who even watches that kind of variety show? I just saw it on Weibo. Those netizens said you and Wenxi got married for convenience, and all those lovey-dovey clips were just for show.”
Yan Run let out a soft chuckle. “That’s only because I was too stiff back then. I never thought it’d cause such a misunderstanding. From now on, I promise everyone—never again.”
She leaned in and planted a kiss on Yu Wenxi’s cheek.
Yu Wenxi, for once, seemed the shy one. With so many acquaintances nearby, she couldn’t help feeling flustered—unlike Yan Run, who showed no such restraint.
Ye Qingfeng burst out laughing. “Second Miss Yan, impressive! Keep kissing her and show those civilians how it’s done.”
Seeing the faint blush on Yu Wenxi’s face, Xiang Hai felt his irritation building with nowhere to vent. He immediately whipped out his phone and began unloading a barrage of messages to a friend.
Meng Qieyi, unable to keep watching, excused herself to the bathroom.
Noticing this, Yan Run wiped her hands and said to Yu Wenxi, “I’m going to the restroom too.”
Yu Wenxi continued eating the shrimp Yan Run had peeled for her. “Go ahead.”
Meng Qieyi had just finished washing her hands when she saw in the mirror that Yan Run was standing behind her. Startled, she spun around and blurted, “Second Miss Yan, I’m only here to see Wenxi. I won’t treat her the way I did before—you have my word.”
Yan Run clicked her tongue twice. “I didn’t even say anything yet, and you’re already this nervous?”
Meng Qieyi sighed. “Just say whatever it is you want to say.”
Yan Run crossed her arms. “I’m not letting you off for what happened before. Luckily, I was there to save Wenxi. You’re going to agree to a few conditions, and then you can leave for overseas in peace.”
Meng Qieyi froze. “How do you even know I’m going abroad?”
Yan Run’s voice turned cold. “I spent money to have you investigated, just to see if you were still coveting my wife. Who do you think you are, trying to touch her? She’s my wife, and no one is allowed to hurt her—not even me!”
Her voice wavered on the last part. Clearly, the memory of that night still made her want to beat Meng Qieyi to a pulp.
Feeling the weight of her guilt, Meng Qieyi lowered her head. “Go on.”
“First condition—you’re not allowed to call my wife ‘Wenxi.’ You will address her as ‘Miss Yu.’”
Meng Qieyi clenched her fists and bit her lip, but agreed.
“Second—you’re never to see my wife again. Not ever in this lifetime.”
“Third—you will delete every single way you have of contacting her. If you won’t do it yourself, I’ll make sure I do it for you.”
By the time Yan Run finished, Meng Qieyi felt as if she couldn’t breathe.
Every word stabbed into her chest like a blade—sharp and unrelenting.
“But… having her WeChat was my only hope.”
“Hope? What—are you waiting for us to get divorced?” Yan Run’s expression darkened. She stared at Meng Qieyi with a chilling finality, enunciating each word: “My jiejie and I will never divorce. Get that out of your head.”
Meng Qieyi was silent for a long moment, her fingers clenching so tightly they hurt. Finally, she nodded in agreement and, after a pause, said, “Do you know why Wenxi—Miss Yu—brought you to this gathering?”
Yan Run gave a noncommittal hum. “I don’t know, and I don’t care. Wherever she wants to take me, I’ll go.”
Meng Qieyi gave a low, humorless laugh. “Back in university, Wenxi was too aloof. A lot of people couldn’t stand her. When they heard the two of you got married, they mocked her behind her back. That’s why I thought she’d never come to this reunion. But when she did, I realized she brought you here to show them how much you care for her—that you’re truly in love, and not just in a marriage of convenience like the rumors say.”
“She knew they didn’t like her, but they liked you even less. To them, you’re just a useless, scummy Alpha—a lunatic. So when they mock her, they mock you too. Wenxi must have known her former classmates would keep their distance from her, yet she still brought you along, for your sake. She even mentioned you two were trying for a baby, indirectly proving you’re… capable.”
Yan Run didn’t respond. She’d thought about these things before, but hearing it put into words still stirred a deep gratitude in her.
She didn’t care whether or not she could have children. What mattered was being married to Yu Wenxi.
As long as they could be together forever, that was enough.
“I understand. Thank you for the reminder.” Yan Run smiled faintly—only to glance back and see Yu Wenxi standing at the doorway, no one else behind her.
Meng Qieyi looked over too, memories surfacing of the girl she’d once seen singing on stage. That girl was married now. And so, she let go.
“There’s one more reason,” Yu Wenxi said, her clear, cold eyes locking onto Meng Qieyi. “I had it looked into—A-Yan’s race car was tampered with. But I don’t think it was Xu Tangran. What do you think?”
Yu Wenxi’s gaze was unwavering. Meng Qieyi’s heart skipped a beat. She pointed at herself. “Miss Yu… you think it was me?”
“I’m not sure,” Yu Wenxi said coolly.
“It absolutely wasn’t me,” Meng Qieyi replied firmly. Then, recalling something Lang Feng had once said about hating Yan Run, she added, “But… there’s someone I don’t know if you’re familiar with.”
Yan Run asked, “Who?”
“Lang Feng.”
“Lang Feng?” Yan Run’s eyes widened in disbelief the moment she heard the name.
Yu Wenxi was momentarily stunned—Yan Run had never mentioned this person before. She took Yan Run’s hand. “Who is she?”
Yan Run said nothing.
Meng Qieyi explained, “She’s the one who gave me the drug that night, the reason I believed her and did what I did to Miss Yu. That’s why I’ve been so guilty I decided to leave the country. But when she found out, she didn’t want me to go. She even told me to my face that she’d make sure Yan Run suffered. I didn’t think much of it then, didn’t even know if you two knew each other. But could this race car incident…”
Yu Wenxi pressed, “So who exactly is she?”
Yan Run looked uneasy under her gaze and sighed. “I’ll tell you when we get home.”
