After the Real Young Miss Became My Canary - Chapter 55
Chapter 55
The person who spoke from behind, seeing Song Zhi stop, thought Song Zhi must have stopped to wait for her. She quickened her pace and quickly walked over. This person was none other than the unlucky girl, He Rong.
Shen Ying noticed this and merely gave Song Zhi a cold raised eyebrow, the meaning clear.
He Rong, reaching the two of them, realized there was someone standing in front of Song Zhi. She had just met this person, but why were these two together again? They stood face-to-face, not speaking a word, but the atmosphere was extremely odd.
He Rong cautiously glanced at both of them. Her first impression was that they both looked expensive and a bit strange. The stranger’s face was expressionless, but her eyes somehow carried a gentle smile, while her boss, who usually had two shallow dimples, looked cold.
Even with her lack of tact, He Rong dared not speak in this bizarre atmosphere.
Song Zhi, whose flimsy lie had just been exposed, certainly couldn’t speak. Her only thought was that when she got back, she needed to find a place to pray. How could anyone be this unlucky? She wanted to leave, but her hand was still firmly gripped. For a moment, the surroundings were terrifyingly silent. In this anxious silence, Song Zhi suddenly felt a sense of frustration.
Maybe I should just give up. In broad daylight, what could Shen Ying possibly do to her? She just needed to run fast afterward.
In the midst of this eerie silence, Shen Ying spoke: “Long time no see, General Manager Song.”
She pronounced the last two words slowly, enunciating each syllable as if squeezing them from between her teeth, which sent a chill down Song Zhi’s spine. Song Zhi felt that if she mentally replaced that phrase with, “Why are you still alive?” it would sound perfectly natural.
But she kept silently repeating to herself: In broad daylight…
Shen Ying seemed utterly oblivious to her resistance, leaning forward slightly: “Why isn’t General Manager Song responding?”
The distance between them instantly narrowed. Song Zhi was shocked and quickly took a large step back out of fear. She forgot her hand was still held. Her backward step only pulled Shen Ying forward. The distance was already shortened by Shen Ying’s lean, and Song Zhi’s retreat caused her to pull the other woman right up to her face. Fortunately, at the last second, she sharply leaned her head back, avoiding the tragedy of facing her enemy cheek-to-cheek only three minutes after the reunion.
Shen Ying was either dazed or doing something else. She showed no awareness of maintaining distance from an enemy. Her eyes were fixed on Song Zhi without blinking, and her expression remained cold. Song Zhi had no idea what she was thinking.
Song Zhi said faintly: “I apologize, but I don’t have a habit of talking to strangers. But if you don’t let go, I’m calling the police.”
Shen Ying’s gaze settled on her face, staring for a long moment until the second before Song Zhi frowned, when she finally looked away and then released her hand.
As she let go, a small wooden accessory fell from her left hand. It was about the size of two thumbs. Song Zhi had never seen Shen Ying wear accessories before and couldn’t help but glance at it twice. After looking, she suddenly realized what she was doing and uncomfortably looked away.
When she looked up, she saw Shen Ying’s eyes were still on her face. Shen Ying’s expression was as cold as ever, but her gaze was deep, as if hiding something Song Zhi couldn’t understand. Song Zhi simply felt a wave of goosebumps.
Then, she heard Shen Ying say: “I apologize. I just wanted to invite General Manager Song to dinner. Do you have time now?”
Song Zhi: “…”
She was almost driven to laughter. It turned out that everything she had just said meant no more to Shen Ying than rambling nonsense. Is Shen Ying mentally unwell? What was their relationship before, and what is it now? Why is Shen Ying still so utterly out of touch?
Song Zhi said coldly: “Don’t worry, I won’t compete with you for the title of the Song family’s eldest daughter. I don’t care for it. Unless something unexpected happens, I won’t appear in front of you again. You know I keep my word. So you don’t need to scheme in the shadows. Your relationship with Song Qin is tense right now. He might not be on your side.”
Shen Ying stared at her, her mind seemingly adrift, repeating blankly: “What?”
Song Zhi didn’t hold back, rewarding her with an eye roll: “Oh, are you not worried that he might turn around and help me? Are you perhaps hoping I’ll hang myself with a rope? Thank you, but I feel I’m still young and have a lot of life left.”
Shen Ying finally grasped her meaning: “I didn’t.”
Song Zhi’s hand was free now, and she had no intention of speaking to her further. She believed they were not on speaking terms.
However, as she turned to leave, Shen Ying grabbed her hand tightly again.
Song Zhi’s face turned cold: “Let go.”
Shen Ying pressed her lips together but held on tightly: “I didn’t try to harm you. I wasn’t involved with Song Qin.”
Song Zhi sneered: “You didn’t try to harm me?”
Shen Ying: “Yes, I was merely forced to…”
Song Zhi cut her off: “Forced to be with me, forced to deceive me, forced to collude with Song Qin, and publicly humiliate me? Why don’t you get your head checked before you speak? It’s been a few years, but why is your memory so poor? Whether you were involved in the mountain road incident or not is irrelevant to me. You don’t need to explain yourself. We are strangers.”
Shen Ying stared blankly at her. Song Zhi tugged her restrained hand. After a full minute, Shen Ying, the punctual person who usually guarded every minute, slowly let go.
Song Zhi: “He Rong, let’s go.”
“Ah, oh, oh.” He Rong, who was still out of the loop, nodded dazedly and followed her out. When they reached the car, she curiously looked back to see if that person had left. She turned and saw the person was still standing there, expressionless, but her eyes were fixed on them. He Rong followed her gaze and realized she was staring at Song Zhi. Her figure was shrouded in an atmosphere of loss.
Once in the car, He Rong whispered: “General Manager Song.”
Song Zhi was amused: “I didn’t do anything to you, did I? Why are you suddenly deflated?”
He Rong felt a little guilty. After thinking for a long time, she finally spoke: “I’m sorry. It’s all because of me.” He Rong figured that regardless of the situation, apologizing was safe, and the atmosphere between them seemed fine until she arrived and spoke up.
Song Zhi raised an eyebrow and smiled: “Why don’t you say it’s because the hotel door opens in that direction? What does it have to do with you? Don’t overthink it.”
He Rong hummed and fell silent. Sitting in the passenger seat, she could see Song Zhi in the rearview mirror.
The driver was just pulling away. Through the mirror, she saw Song Zhi slightly turn her head and look out the left window. He Rong instinctively looked up, following her boss’s gaze, and saw the woman still standing in the same spot, her lips pressed, her face lacking animation, but her whole being was enveloped in a sense of despair.
“What are you looking at?” Song Zhi asked faintly.
The car was driving quickly. In a moment, she couldn’t see the person anymore. Just as she was about to turn, she heard Song Zhi’s voice, which was different from her usual smiling tone, sounding deeply unhappy.
He Rong nervously hemmed and hawed for a few seconds, then braced herself and asked: “Who was that just now?”
For a moment, He Rong thought she had lost her hearing. All she could hear was the faint sound of the car tires rolling on the ground. Other than that, there was only a deathly silence. In this silence, He Rong felt like hitting herself. Why be curious? And why ask out loud? Is my mouth really that hard to control? It’s so hard for college graduates to find jobs these days.
“She was my lover.”
He Rong turned around in shock, her pupils involuntarily widening.
Song Zhi’s voice was light: “And my enemy.”
