- Chapter 8 - “Think it over carefully before you give me your answer. ...”
It was the busiest time for the snack street in the evening, with people coming and going, and the sounds were lively and noisy. Yet, Fang Xu blocked out all the noise, reading the short line of text over and over.
The person she had been trying to contact in every possible way recently had taken the initiative to message her.
There was only one message, sent two hours ago, but she hadn’t noticed it as she was eating. Fang Xu couldn’t describe her mood, only that she quickly replied.
[Hello, I have time, we can meet anytime.]
Tang Xingxing was discussing the snack shops outside the school gate with Liu Hanxue when she realized a moment later that someone was missing from their side.
Looking around, she found Fang Xu standing motionless behind them, head lowered, focused on her phone, as if waiting for a message.
Tang Xingxing and Liu Hanxue exchanged a glance, walked over, and asked, “Xuxu, why did you stop? Did your advisor contact you?”
Someone so serious and focused that it would make her stop on the spot could only be a girlfriend or an advisor. Since she had just broken up, the first possibility was ruled out, leaving only the advisor.
When her shoulder was patted, Fang Xu snapped back to attention and replied, “Not the advisor, it’s the person who paid for my medical expenses before.”
She, of course, didn’t mention that the person was Pei Yunci.
Tang Xingxing quickly asked, “You found her?”
Fang Xu nodded, and just as she was about to say something, she felt a vibration in her palm.
She had set up a special alert so as not to miss Pei Yunci’s message.
“I found her,” Fang Xu lowered her head to look at the screen. Compared to just now, there was another message on the page.
[Do you have time now? I’m at a café near Jiangcheng University. If you’re busy right now, we can schedule another time.]
Attached to the message was the address of a café near Jiangcheng University.
It was very familiar, close to the milk tea shop where she worked part-time, only two streets away.
Fang Xu raised her head and glanced in that direction. Even without seeing the person, she felt a sudden surge of nervousness.
Her typing speed was faster than before.
[Yes, I have time. I can go over now. Could you please wait ten minutes for me?]
She had searched for Pei Yunci’s information these past few days and knew that with her identity, her schedule was packed, and it was already a big deal for her to spare time to meet.
[Okay.]
“Ding” went the phone, a slight vibration in her palm, confirming the answer.
Fang Xu let out a small sigh of relief and apologized to the people beside her, “Xingxing, Hanxue, I just agreed to meet her, so I probably can’t stay with you two anymore.”
Liu Hanxue and Tang Xingxing readily agreed, “Then you should hurry. Don’t worry about us. Also, we’re going to buy milk tea, do you want us to get one for you?”
Fang Xu smiled, “No need, you two go ahead.”
After saying goodbye to them, she didn’t head straight to the café but returned to the dormitory first.
When she went to the Pei Corporation, Fang Xu had specially converted the medical fee into cash. Since she hadn’t managed to give it, she had put it in her drawer when she returned.
She put the envelope into her backpack. As she was about to leave, her gaze swept over the mirror next to her.
Compared to her disheveled state in the isolation room, she looked much better now.
At least her eye sockets weren’t red, and her face was clean, free of tears and sweat.
Fang Xu tidied her fringe and clothes a little, put on two layers of scent-blocking patches, and left the dorm.
She had promised ten minutes, so she didn’t dare to delay on the way, running almost the entire distance.
She passed the milk tea shop on the way, and the owner saw her and thought he might have been mistaken. “Fang Xu, why are you here now?”
It wasn’t her scheduled part-time shift.
Fang Xu replied, pointing to the café next door, “I’m here to meet someone.”
The owner then realized, smiled, and said, “I see. Then you hurry up.”
Fang Xu nodded, took a deep breath, and pushed open the café door.
After leaving the school, Pei Yunci got the Alpha’s contact information.
She sent a simple message and waited for a while in the café but didn’t receive a reply. Only Du Xing’an’s messages popped up constantly.
[Du Xing’an: Is it really like you broke up with her girlfriend, and then you took advantage of the situation?!]
[Du Xing’an: The more I think about it, the more I think it’s possible. It must be close to the truth, right?]
[Du Xing’an: Where are you? Don’t worry, with our relationship, I definitely won’t tell anyone. Just tell me.]
During the time she didn’t reply, the person had already finished writing a melodramatic novel.
Pei Yunci swiped away the messages and muted her, finally achieving some peace.
Since the Alpha hadn’t replied, Pei Yunci wouldn’t just wait. She messaged her assistant to hold the cross-border online meeting as scheduled.
The meeting agenda wasn’t long, mainly the quarterly report of the branch company. But even so, the people on the other side of the video call were tense and dared not relax.
Most of the people in the café were students working on assignments, some frowning deeply, staring blankly at their professional textbooks, while others were typing rapidly, clearly rushing to finish their dissertations.
Pei Yunci had her laptop open in front of her. Her suit jacket was casually placed nearby, and one button of her shirt was undone, making her seem less cold and stern and fitting into the café environment.
She was seated in the innermost corner, conveniently shielded by two large potted plants and a corner wall. Unless someone walked right in, they wouldn’t notice her.
Pei Yunci leaned back in her chair, mostly silent.
She listened to the sounds and data coming through her headphones, occasionally speaking to point out errors.
When Fang Xu came in and found her, this was the scene she saw.
The woman was cool and elegant, showing a fair wrist bone. Her fingertip lightly tapped a fountain pen, her eyes half-closed, lost in thought.
In this ordinary café corner, sitting there, she seemed to transform the space into a spacious office with floor-to-ceiling windows.
Fang Xu’s footsteps became much lighter when she moved, and she deliberately kept her breathing low.
However, as the Alpha approached, the pheromones in Pei Yunci’s gland became much more active.
Even without hearing a sound, she knew who had arrived.
Pei Yunci raised her head and saw the girl she hadn’t seen for days.
She was carrying a backpack, seemed to have run all the way, her cheeks were a little flushed, and she was slightly out of breath.
Nine minutes after her message, she wasn’t late.
Pei Yunci, waiting for someone for the first time, didn’t find the experience bad.
She temporarily muted the microphone for her meeting and pointed to the seat across from her: “Please have a seat first. Do you mind waiting a little while?”
Fang Xu shook her head: “It’s okay, you go ahead and be busy.”
Pei Yunci nodded. After having someone bring two more cups of coffee, she told the person on the other end of the meeting: “Continue.”
Fang Xu sat quietly, only occasionally glancing at the person across from her.
Compared to the isolation room, Pei Yunci now looked different—serious, stern, and distant. She occasionally spoke German, her voice cool.
After a brief look, she shifted her gaze.
She also wondered why the other party had contacted her.
Fang Xu couldn’t figure it out, so she stopped racking her brain, took out her phone, and started looking at it seriously.
Half an hour later, the meeting ended.
Pei Yunci closed her laptop and looked at the person in front of her: “I apologize for making you wait so long.”
Before Fang Xu arrived, the key points of the meeting had mostly been covered. The remaining content could be compiled into a document. If there were any issues, they could contact the person in charge via email.
But Pei Yunci didn’t interrupt the meeting.
She did it on purpose.
She wanted to see the Alpha’s reaction.
After waiting for half an hour, Fang Xu showed no impatience and said gently and good-naturedly, “It’s okay. If you still have work, you can deal with it first.”
Hearing this, Pei Yunci didn’t push it any further, feeling a rare, subtle sense of guilt: “I’m done with work. Were you bored waiting?”
Fang Xu told the truth: “I wasn’t bored. I was reading foreign language literature.”
Pei Yunci: “Foreign language literature?”
Fang Xu nodded and answered seriously: “I downloaded it onto my phone beforehand, so I can read it during my free time.”
The previous materials were history-related. After breaking up with Song Shu, she had switched to literature related to her own major.
Pei Yunci: “…”
She had noticed the other person looking at her phone earlier and thought she was just relaxing, never expecting her to be reading literature.
Pei Yunci looked at the young girl with a hint of naivety in front of her, her tone carrying a note of praise: “No wonder you’re the top student in your major every year.”
She made no secret of the fact that she had investigated the person in front of her.
After learning that the other party had broken up with her girlfriend, Pei Yunci reread the Alpha’s file, remembering more details.
Suddenly being praised, Fang Xu felt a bit embarrassed and didn’t know what to say, finally just blurting out two words: “Thank you.”
Pei Yunci’s lips curved slightly and, following her words, she said, “You’re welcome.”
After a moment of silence, Fang Xu spoke, “I’m very sorry about what happened in the isolation room. Because of the secondary differentiation, I couldn’t control my pheromones, which caused you trouble. I am truly sorry.”
Pei Yunci said calmly, “There’s no need to apologize. It was simply too much of a coincidence. Not to mention…”
“I allowed you to mark me at the time.”
“If that’s the case, then I should apologize to you too.”
With those words, the scene of the woman slightly turning her body and exposing her flushed scent gland amidst the hot breathing in the isolation room immediately reappeared in Fang Xu’s mind.
Fang Xu’s ear tips were burning, and she quickly shook her head, “No need to apologize.”
As she spoke, she took out the prepared envelope and said, “I also need to thank you for paying the medical expenses back then.”
Pei Yunci did not refuse. She accepted it and asked, “How is your body now?”
Her voice was still calm, but for Fang Xu, the simple, polite concern from the person in front of her was already a surprise.
“I’m alright,” Fang Xu paused for a moment, then lowered her voice slightly, “How is your body? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?”
Pei Yunci took a sip of her coffee and didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she asked, “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”
Somehow, Fang Xu felt nervous: “I don’t mind.”
Pei Yunci put down her cup, her thick, long eyelashes fluttered, and their eyes met.
“Miss Fang, are you single now?”
After the question, Fang Xu was still a little dazed. After a moment of astonishment, she said, “Yes, I am single.”
The expected answer.
After confirming, Pei Yunci returned to the original topic. She said, “Miss Fang, my body is not very well.”
Fang Xu ignored her confusion, her tone a little anxious, and quickly said, “Is it because of the marking? Should we go to the hospital now?”
The café wasn’t big, and the distance between the seats was close.
Therefore, Pei Yunci could see the Alpha in front of her very clearly.
“I have a scholarship and money from my part-time jobs. This is certainly not enough, but if you need me, I will do my best…”
Anxiety, worry, guilt… and behind the spectacle frames, those clear and beautiful eyes.
In a short sentence, the Alpha was about to lay out all her possessions.
She was indeed a simpleton.
Pei Yunci interrupted her, “Did you never think I might be deceiving you?”
Fang Xu said almost without hesitation, “I never thought so.”
Given the identity of the person in front of her, there was no need to deceive her.
Her sincere and decisive answer improved Pei Yunci’s mood considerably.
She stopped teasing the young girl in front of her, took out her medical examination report, and placed it in front of Fang Xu.
“My health is indeed poor—gland disorder, pheromone imbalance, and other issues. But these symptoms were pre-existing, unrelated to your marking.”
“On the contrary, to alleviate these symptoms, I require a stable Alpha’s marking. I am not repulsed by your pheromones, which is why I wanted to come and ask you today if you would be willing to assist with the treatment.”
“Of course, this is a collaboration and an exchange. If you agree, I will do my best to meet any of your requests.”
The series of statements stunned Fang Xu. Her mind felt a little blank.
Fang Xu opened her mouth: “I…”
She only managed to utter a single syllable before Pei Yunci interrupted her: “No rush. You don’t have to give me an answer today.”
“If you sign the contract, it means I might contact you for pheromone comfort at any time.”
“And, during this period, it’s impossible for you to establish an intimate relationship with any other Omega.”
Pei Yunci looked at the well-behaved and obedient girl in front of her and said slowly.
“Think it over carefully before you give me your answer.”
