After the Nerd Marked the Top Omega - Chapter 3
When their eyes met, the hastily ignored details became clearer.
Fang Xu only now noticed that the eyes of the person opposite her were also very beautiful. Her pupils were a slightly pale amber, and the corners of her eyes curved slightly inward, like a work of art.
When she looked over, her thick eyelashes lifted lightly, accentuating a sense of depth and coldness.
Without needing to say anything, a simple conclusion could be drawn: the other person did not like strangers getting too close.
For some unknown reason, when meeting the gaze of the person in front of her, Fang Xu’s nerves felt taut, and she had an inexplicable sense of tension.
She quickly took a few steps back, yielding most of the space, motioning for the other person to enter first. She didn’t forget her apology, repeating, “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking carefully just now. Did I bump you?”
The woman didn’t take the matter to heart. She entered the lounge area and replied with two indifferent words: “No.”
It was clear that she didn’t mind the incident, but she was indeed aloof.
Hearing this, Fang Xu also slightly relaxed. Keeping two steps away from the woman, she walked into the lounge as well.
Perhaps because everyone had gone to the lecture given by the head of the Pei Group, the lounge was quite empty today, with only the two of them.
Fang Xu’s gaze fell on the beautiful and distinguished woman. Seeing her sit down, Fang Xu retracted her gaze and found another place to sit.
Her seat was quite far from the other person, near the corner, but it made her feel much safer.
Fang Xu had an introverted personality and slight social anxiety. It didn’t affect her daily life, but she wasn’t like the cleaning lady she met earlier, who could strike up a conversation with anyone.
In unfamiliar settings, being in an inconspicuous and unnoticeable place made her feel safer and more comfortable.
As the name suggests, the lounge was for rest and relaxation. The designer was also a graduate of Jiangcheng University and put a lot of thought into the design.
Two sides featured bright floor-to-ceiling windows, offering a view of neatly planted ornamental shrubs and flowers outside. Further in the distance was the open-air experimental field for agriculture students, with neat rows of labeled, sprouting crops, green and vibrant, making it feel less like a school and more like a scenic viewing area.
Fang Xu took off her backpack, didn’t look at the scenery much, but noticed the reflection on the transparent floor-to-ceiling window.
The window was clean, clearly reflecting her entire self.
Running back and forth between campus and off-campus for three hours, even though the weather wasn’t hot, she looked particularly disheveled.
Her tied ponytail was slightly loose, a few strands of hair fluttered near her ears, sticking to her sweaty forehead, and her hoodie jacket was a bit messy, with one hood string inside and the other outside.
Fang Xu pulled out the hood strings and smoothed her hair, finally tidying herself up so she wasn’t so messy.
She opened her phone’s camera to check if there was anything else amiss, but then noticed her eyes were red.
Slightly startled, Fang Xu raised her hand and touched them. Her cool skin felt a little stinging. It turned out she had been crying without knowing it.
Thinking that she had apologized to the woman in this state, she suddenly understood Song Shu. With a girlfriend who looked like this, it was inevitable for him to fall for someone else and want to break up.
After staring for a few seconds, she turned off her phone. The pain she had previously ignored surged back, even more intensely, threatening to engulf her.
Fang Xu tried hard to ignore it, unzipped her backpack, and reached inside for a piece of bread to line her stomach.
But her hand first touched the perfectly wrapped hard gift box—the apology gift originally intended for Song Shu.
Fang Xu curled her fingers, looked at it for a moment, and then placed it aside. She found the bread inside and slowly nibbled on it.
The bread had been sitting for a while, making it dry, hard, and somewhat choking. However, it was cheap, the type she bought most often.
She could usually eat it, but for some reason today, it felt difficult to swallow.
The lounge had disposable paper cups and hot water. Fang Xu stood up, intending to get some.
However, her legs, which had been walking for a long time, were a bit weak, and she didn’t control her strength well. The chair scraped against the floor, making a sound.
Pei Yunci, sitting a little further away, looked over.
Their eyes met again, and Fang Xu blurted out, “I’m sorry.”
Pei Yunci’s gaze swept over her. She stated the fact calmly, “This is a public space. A certain level of noise is allowed. You are not wrong, and you don’t need to apologize to me.”
Since meeting this girl, she seemed to have been apologizing constantly.
Huddled in the corner, like a hedgehog preparing for winter, or perhaps a rabbit would be a better analogy—without any prickles.
Unfortunately, among all animals, Pei Yunci preferred wolves and leopards, and disliked creatures like rabbits the most.
“Oh, okay…” For some unknown reason, Fang Xu’s eyes became completely red, and her voice was a little choked.
The grievances and sadness had been suppressed, but suddenly someone told her, “You are not wrong, you don’t need to apologize,” which made her tears flow uncontrollably.
Tears streamed down, finding a breakthrough and overflowing, impossible to wipe away. Occasionally, an uncontrollable sob could be heard.
Pei Yunci, who had only offered a casual reminder: “…”
She took a rare serious look at the person in front of her.
The girl was dressed simply, wearing a light grey hoodie jacket, casual pants, and canvas shoes. Her hair was dark and smooth, but her bangs were a bit long, covering most of her face.
She clearly looked like an inexperienced student, a well-behaved one at that, but she was crying pitifully.
Because she had to wipe her tears, the girl had taken off her black-rimmed glasses, revealing her hidden brows and eyes. Her eyes were dark and bright, like they had been washed with water, but her eye sockets were very red, unable to hide her distress.
She looked even more like a rabbit.
Pei Yunci had heard friends, employees, and outsiders complain openly and secretly about her personality, usually describing her as “fearsome,” “cold,” or “unapproachable.”
Today was the first time she realized that her words could scare someone into crying.
Pei Yunci pushed the tissues on the table toward her and said coolly, “Take them yourself.”
Compared to her usual self, she was being quite patient and good-tempered.
Fang Xu’s emotions gradually stabilized. Under the woman’s oppressive gaze, she instinctively wanted to apologize, but as the word was about to come out, she quickly changed it to, “Thank you.”
The sadness had lessened, replaced entirely by nervousness.
Pei Yunci: “…”
She stopped looking at the girl, closed her eyes, and continued to rest.
Fang Xu: “…”
Her inability to speak well seemed to have led to another inappropriate remark.
She poured the warm water and returned to her corner to sit down.
Compared to earlier, Fang Xu’s sitting angle had changed slightly. She was positioned a bit further out, so she wouldn’t only show her back.
She knew that whether it was her red eyes or slightly messy hair, her most vulnerable state had been clearly seen and exposed by the other person. There was nothing left to hide.
Thinking these chaotic thoughts, Fang Xu ate the bread in her hand as her dinner for the day.
The busiest time for the milk tea shop was during dinner hours, so she could only eat earlier or wait until her shift ended.
From time to time, she would look at the woman sitting a little distance away. The sleeves of her shirt were rolled up to her forearms, revealing a stretch of cool, pale wrist bone. Her head rested on her arm, eyes slightly closed, her brow gently furrowed, as if she were uncomfortable.
“Something wrong?” Pei Yunci suddenly spoke.
Even with her eyes closed, she could feel the other person’s gaze.
The other person was a Beta, which was why her tolerance was so high.
If an Alpha were staring like this, she would have thrown them out a long time ago.
The clear, cold voice suddenly rang out, and Fang Xu’s heart skipped a beat.
She found her breath and quickly replied, “Nothing.”
After hesitating for a few seconds, Fang Xu tentatively asked, “Are you not feeling well?”
Even if the other person’s gesture of giving her tissues was only polite, it did make her feel much better when she was upset, and she was very grateful to her.
If the other person wasn’t feeling well, perhaps she could help.
Pei Yunci closed her eyes and heard the girl’s question.
She was an S-class Omega, so her sensitivity to pheromones was greater.
More people came to the lecture than expected, and the mixed pheromones of various Alphas and Omegas floated throughout the entire building.
Her glandular condition was already unstable, and affected by the mixed pheromones, her suppression bracelet continuously displayed reminders and warnings.
She raised the threshold of the suppression bracelet, briefly concluded her lecture speech, and left the building.
Since her gland issues began, Pei Yunci often faced this situation and knew how to deal with it. Finding a place with few people and no pheromones usually allowed her gland to slowly stabilize.
However, she naturally wouldn’t discuss these matters with a stranger.
Pei Yunci didn’t speak and wouldn’t offer any explanation.
The lounge was silent for a moment, and Fang Xu understood what the person in front of her meant.
She opened her mouth, but felt that anything she said would be inappropriate, so she returned to her seat in silence.
Perhaps the other person disliked her, or perhaps she felt that since she was so disheveled, what help could she offer? Fang Xu was not angry and understood.
Given the other person’s clothes and demeanor, she must be a young teacher or a senior student at the university; there wouldn’t be any accident.
Fang Xu also put her mind at ease, packed her backpack, and pushed open the lounge door to leave.
It was very quiet, and her footsteps were barely audible.
When Pei Yunci opened her eyes again, she was the only one left in the lounge.
Her gaze fell on the other spot; the red-eyed person was gone.
Pei Yunci withdrew her gaze, raised her hand, and pressed the area of her gland. A burst of needle-like pain spread, and she could feel some swelling.
She adjusted the suppression bracelet’s threshold to the maximum, grabbed the inhibitor she carried with her, and entered the adjacent isolation room.
Alphas and Omegas account for about two-thirds of the population. To prevent accidents, isolation rooms are provided in places like lounges and restrooms.
If someone temporarily loses control of their pheromones due to strenuous exercise, injury, or emotional fluctuations, they can slowly calm down in the isolation room.
The isolation room was small but equipped with a professional ventilation system to prevent pheromones from leaking out.
Pei Yunci’s pheromones were currently within the control range, but to prevent accidents, she skillfully tore open the packaging, injected the inhibitor into her arm, and waited for it to take effect.
Since her gland became problematic, injecting inhibitors had become as common as drinking water for her.
Pei Yunci lowered her eyes, thinking about her upcoming work.
She didn’t just come to the university for the donation; the main purpose was to establish a partnership with Jiangcheng University.
The lecture could be handled simply and delegated to an assistant, but the subsequent negotiation could not be left to others, or it wouldn’t reflect the Pei Group’s seriousness about the matter.
Talent cooperation, laboratory cooperation, technology research and development… As contract clauses flashed through her mind, Pei Yunci’s fingers suddenly paused a moment later.
The pain in her gland intensified, and she could smell a faint scent of pheromones on the tip of her nose, causing her body to slowly begin heating up.
The inhibitor just now had no effect; instead, it brought on symptoms of a heat period.
Pei Yunci’s brow furrowed slightly. Subconsciously, she wanted to adjust the suppression bracelet, but the threshold was already at its highest, and a danger alert popped up simultaneously.
【High Pheromone Concentration Detected. Do you require assistance? Should a message be sent to your emergency contact?】
【No command detected. Reminder: Your pheromone concentration is still increasing. A message will be automatically sent to your emergency contact in five minutes.】
Pei Yunci glanced at the bracelet, endured her body’s reaction, and, before her body completely gave way, injected two more doses of the inhibitor.
She closed her eyes, recalling what the doctor had said a few days ago.
“You can’t have more than two inhibitors a day, or more than ten a week. If you keep abusing your body like this, don’t expect to live past thirty-five.”
“For your condition, the most suitable solution is to find an Alpha with a high compatibility rating for a temporary mark. You know this very well, don’t you?”
“I’ve been keeping an eye out for you recently, but you still need to be serious about your own health. Don’t take it lightly. Take your medicine on time and follow the doctor’s orders…”
As the memory reached this point, fine sweat broke out on Pei Yunci’s forehead. The pheromone concentration from her gland was growing thicker, and even her breathing felt like burning.
She looked at the three empty inhibitor packages in her hand when a knock suddenly sounded on the door.
In a daze, Pei Yunci thought the doctor had instantly teleported over to settle the score for her non-compliance.
The knocking sounded again, “Are you alright?”
A strange yet familiar voice. This time, Pei Yunci heard it more clearly—it wasn’t the doctor.
It was the rabbit-like girl, who had returned.
