Chapter 56: A Plea
An ineffable bitterness spreads across Tao Ning’s heart. He lowers his eyes, suddenly remembering the uncomfortable talisman he saw. Is that really what happened?
But in his heart, Song Yucong isn’t a bad omen, nor is he a lowly weed… Then what is he?
Tao Ning feels lost. A-Yun sighs and continues, “Later, the Second Young Master grew up. Those kinds of things happened less and less often, until now. The villa is much more harmonious. It’s just… it’s said that the Second Young Master’s bad temper is due to psychological issues, and many doctors have been hired to see him…”
Loud noises and car sounds come from outside the window. As A-Yun speaks, he closes the bedroom window, worried that the outside wind will chill Tao Ning.
How could a person so small, locked alone in a basement and forced to have blood drawn, not have psychological problems? Tao Ning can’t bear to listen anymore. He changes the subject at the right moment. “What’s going on outside?”
Song Yucong won’t let him leave, and he has a tendency to keep him locked in the room.
“Master Song is back. There’s a banquet in a few days. I’m not sure what kind of banquet it is. But I will be very busy then, and Nuan Nuan has also left… Young Master Tao, will you be okay here alone?”
A-Yun can tell that Tao Ning’s freedom has been restricted.
Tao Ning shakes his head. However, he isn’t answering the question of whether he’ll be “okay,” but the question of being “alone.” He has a feeling that Song Yucong won’t let him be alone.
His premonition is correct. After A-Yun leaves, the bedroom becomes quiet. Tao Ning sits quietly on the sofa. But not long after, the dull sound of leather shoes on the carpet echoes. The sound is actually very faint, but Tao Ning hears it.
It’s Song Yucong.
The dull footsteps continue until a black pointed toe touches Tao Ning’s canvas shoes. Song Yucong bends down, his handsome and sharp face almost touching Tao Ning’s pale forehead.
Neither of them speaks, but a subtle tension grows between them.
Tao Ning looks up, blinking at him. His brown, gem-like pupils reflect Song Yucong’s image. Song Yucong straightens up, grunting as he turns his gaze away. He crosses his arms, but his earlobes are unnaturally red.
“Bumpkin, three days from now, at nine in the evening, you must go to the top floor.”
“I don’t know where the top floor is.”
“Are you stupid? I’ll arrange for someone to take you up there.”
“But you didn’t say that.”
Song Yucong glares at him. Tao Ning isn’t angry. Instead, he curves his eyes into two shallow crescents, adorning his small face, like a sly little fox’s smile. It’s incredibly beautiful.
The threatening words he was about to say stop abruptly. Song Yucong grunts, and the redness on his earlobes deepens from pink to a dark red. Tao Ning notices and stares intently. He asks, “Did you see my glasses?”
Ever since he fell asleep here, his glasses have disappeared.
Song Yucong’s eyes narrow. “I threw them away. What are you going to do about it?”
Tao Ning’s eyebrows furrow slightly. Even though it’s just a pair of glasses, it’s not his own possession… He doesn’t want to get into a conflict with Song Yucong right now, so he softens his voice. “Those… those were bought for me by my sister. They’re very important. Where did you throw them? I’ll go get them back.”
As Tao Ning is about to walk out, his arm is suddenly grabbed by a cold hand. He is pulled into Song Yucong’s embrace. The phoenix-like eyes sink. “Don’t go.”
His tone is fierce, with a hint of a threat.
But if Tao Ning listens carefully, there’s always a hint of grievance and a plea in his voice.
He looks up at those phoenix-like eyes, and the person holding him is also looking down at his pearl-like eyes.
Song Yucong encircles him with an extremely possessive posture, locking him tightly within his iron-like arms. Tao Ning suddenly realizes with great sensitivity that the person holding him is very anxious. It’s as if only by holding him can his frantic and tyrannical heartbeat calm down.
Tao Ning relaxes his body and hesitantly hugs him back. The body holding him visibly stiffens, and the redness on his earlobes spreads to his cheeks. Tao Ning hears the person holding him snort, “You stay here. You’re not allowed to go anywhere.”
“But I have to find my glasses.”
“…I’ll have a servant bring them to you later.”
Tao Ning’s eyes curve in a smile. “Oh, but didn’t you say you threw them away?”
Song Yucong is refuted by him again and again. His cheeks turn red with anger, feeling that he has lost face. And what’s with this bumpkin today? Why isn’t he afraid of him at all anymore… Song Yucong can tell that for a while, Tao Ning was a little afraid of him…
Hmph, did he eat a leopard’s heart today?
He stares at Tao Ning’s smug smile. Whether it’s anger or something else, he can’t control himself. He suddenly grips Tao Ning’s slender waist and can’t speak. He simply lowers his ever-proud head and presses his lips against his.
Tao Ning is stunned, his eyes wide.
His mind goes blank. He can’t think, so he just closes his eyes and gently kisses him back.
The room is very quiet because A-Yun closed the windows. Not a single sound of the wind can be heard. Only scattered light, shining through the curtains with hollow rose patterns, falls on the two people embracing each other.
In the evening, as Song Yucong said, a servant brings the glasses. They are placed in a sandalwood box. Tao Ning knows that Song Yucong never threw the glasses away.
He just scared him again, but Tao Ning isn’t afraid of him now.
Tao Ning thinks about it. If Song Yucong says anything unpleasant again, he will retort.
In the evening, Song Yucong comes to have dinner with him. He eats Western food, and Tao Ning eats Chinese food.
His face is a little paler than during the day. He’s still wearing long sleeves and long pants. Tao Ning sits in front of him and doesn’t ask any questions because he has a feeling that if he did, Song Yucong would probably get furious and A-Yun would be dragged into it.
So he pretends he knows nothing and just serves him a bowl of corn and pork rib soup. Tao Ning just tasted it, and the dishes today are all very home-cooked. He recognizes all of them, and there’s no strange fishy smell. This corn and pork rib soup tastes the best.
He wants Song Yucong to try it too.
The steaming soup suddenly appears in front of him. Song Yucong’s hand, holding the fork and knife, pauses. He looks up and meets Tao Ning’s quiet gaze. That day, he was so angry that he lost control, thinking there was nothing in Tao Ning’s eyes. They were so empty that it terrified him, reminding him of the endless darkness in the confinement room and making him look like an unreasonable lunatic.
But now… maybe he was mistaken. Tao Ning’s eyes are very beautiful. When he looks at a person quietly, it makes you feel like his eyes are filled only with that person.
Song Yucong sees himself in these eyes. The darkness that has been shrouded in fear for so long finally catches a glimpse of light. It turns out to be Tao Ning’s eyes.
He gently snorts, puts down his fork and knife, and says, “How dare you bring me such unpalatable things?” But he carefully holds the soup bowl and drinks it all, leaving nothing behind.
Tao Ning sits beside him, his hands obediently resting on his legs, his eyes fixed on Song Yucong as he drinks the soup. The person being stared at slowly blushes. He puts the bowl on the table with a bang and glares at him. “Bumpkin, don’t look at me.”
Tao Ning seems to be obedient, but he says, “I’m not looking at you.”
Song Yucong glares at him even more fiercely. “Then who are you looking at?!”
Tao Ning’s tone is innocent. “A Tyrannosaurus Rex.”
Song Yucong frowns. “Where is there a Tyrannosaurus Rex?”
As the words fall, Song Yucong belatedly realizes that this bumpkin is calling him a Tyrannosaurus Rex. He immediately becomes so angry that he grabs the back of Tao Ning’s collar. But he doesn’t pull him closer. He leans in himself and says with a scowl, “Have I been too good to you recently? Bumpkin, don’t get ahead of yourself. Remember, you’re just my slave…”
“Oh.”
Tao Ning nods thoughtfully, then straightens up and kisses the man with the terrible expression.
Bang.
The man recoils as if he has been scalded, instantly lets go of him, and quickly backs away, almost falling off the chair. The commotion startles Tao Ning a little.
Song Yucong’s face turns as red as a boiled shrimp shell. He covers his mouth and can barely speak. “You, you, you! Tao Ning, what are you doing?!”
This person didn’t react when he kissed him, so why is his reaction so big when Tao Ning kisses him?
Tao Ning says bluntly, “Kissing you.”
This is the first time Tao Ning has actively kissed him. The immense joy clouds Song Yucong’s mind. His heart pounds, almost bursting out of his chest. He feigns a cough and snorts coldly, “You like me?”
Tao Ning doesn’t say anything.
But Song Yucong is so immersed in his joyful mood that he can’t stop himself. He continues, “Let me tell you, bumpkin, there are plenty of people who want to be with me. You’re unstylish and poor, with no competitive edge… But, but if you can please me, I’ll give you a chance.”
Tao Ning doesn’t know why he’s thinking this way. Ever since their kiss at the club, the relationship between him and Song Yucong seems to have changed. But he’s not sure what’s different because no one has explicitly said so.
But now that Song Yucong has made it clear, Tao Ning doesn’t know how to respond.
He used to think that Zhao Jingqun, Xu Jun, and Song Yucong were all just tasks to him. All he needed was to get them to say “I love you.” But so much time has passed. He still dreams of Zhao Jingqun, worries about Xu Jun’s injuries, and now, he actively kisses Song Yucong.
He doesn’t know what to do anymore.
But Song Yucong thinks he has agreed. The rest of the dinner is visibly more enjoyable. His previously pale face gains some color, and he even snorts and says what flowers, what music, and what food he likes.
Tao Ning nods, but he is a little absent-minded. In the evening, when he lies in bed, Song Yucong refuses to let him go back to his room, but he goes to sleep in the small room next door.
The pillow and blanket are filled with Song Yucong’s cold scent. Tao Ning can’t sleep. He lies with his eyes open, looking at the simulated starry sky on the ceiling, and suddenly asks:
System, after I successfully complete the mission, what will happen to the three of them?
The system doesn’t understand him: Clueless guy, what do you mean, “what will happen?”
I will leave… so where will they go?
They’ll continue living, of course!
Oh…
Right. After the mission is over, all that’s left is separation.
Tao Ning is silent for a moment. He then asks impassively: You said you’re from a high-level cosmic civilization. With so many people on Earth, why did you choose me?
The system says nonchalantly: Because it was set up…
A static-like sound, as if from a current malfunction, rings in Tao Ning’s mind. The rest of the system’s words are blurred like TV static, and he can’t hear them at all. Even his temples begin to throb slightly.
He thinks that maybe this is a question he’s not supposed to ask. But the system said it was “set up”… What does “set up” mean? Is there something about him that attracts these so-called high-level civilizations? And the system once mentioned a research institute…
After a while, the system screams: Clueless guy! You’re trying to trick me!
…I’m sorry.
The system grumbles, and then lowers its voice: Clueless guy, don’t ask about some things.
Tao Ning says “Mhm” and thinks about it. He changes the way he asks: Then are there… other people like me on Earth?
However, after a long time, he receives no response from the system.
Just as Tao Ning is about to give up on getting an answer and go to sleep, a mechanical voice with no emotion sounds in his mind. But this time, the voice has a hint of a deeper meaning:
Yes.
His entire body instantly stiffens. Tao Ning closes his eyes and doesn’t respond. Instead, he suppresses the waves of shock in his heart because he suddenly feels that, more than the unexpected answer, what truly shocks and unsettles him is this: he feels as if he has heard this voice somewhere before.
Not in his mind, but in real life.
