- Chapter 10 - The Cannon Fodder Top in a Rich Family Story (10)
Days without classes or painting were originally very happy—if one weren’t being held down on Jiang Henian’s lap and forced to watch educational movies.
For the first ten minutes, Juezhou could still cooperate with Jiang Henian and watch seriously. He even nodded along when the protagonist shouted “Learning is my goal!” with a delivery that sounded like a primary schooler reciting a textbook.
Jiang Henian: “It’s good that you understand.”
Who knows what the director was thinking, but the subsequent plot consisted entirely of the protagonist finding various new ways to study every day.
If a diligent and studious person watched it, it would indeed generate a sense of anxiety and ignite their fighting spirit. For a “salted fish” (slacker) like Juezhou, it meant screaming internally, “It’s over, it’s over, I haven’t even touched a single brushstroke of my graduation project,” while remaining as motionless as a mountain against Jiang Henian’s shoulder. He even felt a trace of sleepiness.
His chin dipped repeatedly, and his eyelids felt like they were fighting a war to stay open.
Jiang Henian tightened his grip on his waist: “Sit steadily and watch seriously.”
“Mm… okay,” Juezhou replied, trying his best to cheer himself up.
He only made it halfway through the movie before falling asleep, his upper body slumping into Jiang Henian’s embrace. Surrounded by the young man’s soap scent, he slept very peacefully; even his curled eyelashes stopped fluttering.
Sensing the increased weight in his arms, Jiang Henian stared at the screen for a while before looking down.
Asleep, Juezhou was much better behaved than when he was awake. His fresh red lips were slightly parted, revealing pearly white teeth. He had absolutely no sense of vigilance, even rubbing against Jiang Henian’s chest.
Jiang Henian reached out his hand and touched Juezhou’s front teeth. In his dream, Juezhou subconsciously stuck out his tongue to lick the foreign object that had intruded into his mouth. The object smelled fragrant, but it tasted bland and flavorless, so Juezhou used his tongue to push it out.
Jiang Henian withdrew. A semi-transparent silver thread of saliva bridged from his fingertip, sagging under the weight of gravity until it broke.
Juezhou looked quite thin, but the flesh on his body was soft and squishy, making him very comfortable to hold. Jiang Henian found a reason for himself to continue the embrace.
The movie reached its end. As the cast list appeared, a gentle and lyrical song began to play. Juezhou moved slightly, seemingly because his bottom was being poked by something hard.
Jiang Henian lowered his dark, thick eyelashes, concealing the churning turbulence in the depths of his eyes.
When Juezhou woke up, it was already the middle of the night.
His chin rubbed against the quilt, and his nose caught a scent that was both familiar and strange. He rolled around on the bed before tiredly opening his eyes.
The decor that met his sight was simple and cold, much like the owner of the room. Memories from before he fell asleep slowly resurfaced. Just as Juezhou was about to prop himself up on his elbows, he froze in place.
Ah, crap…
[So embarrassing, so embarrassing… System, are you there?] Juezhou touched his face, his ears suddenly heating up with unbearable shame. He wasn’t a child anymore, yet he had fallen asleep in the arms of an foster brother who was only a few years older than him.
The System responded quickly: [I’m here, Host. You slept for over four hours.]
Juezhou stared silently at the ceiling for a moment before realizing that Jiang Henian was still sitting at the desk, wearing headphones and conducting a video conference.
Their gazes met in mid-air. Jiang Henian raised a finger, signaling Juezhou to stay quiet. Juezhou quickly made an “X” over his mouth with both hands, indicating he would lie there quietly and not cause trouble.
After lying there for less than ten seconds, he felt a bit uncomfortable. When Jiang Henian carried him to bed, he hadn’t taken off Juezhou’s clothes; his shirt and trousers were still fully intact.
Because he had slept in Jiang Henian’s bed before, Juezhou was quite used to it. He shamelessly huddled under the covers and quietly stripped off his pants.
From Jiang Henian’s perspective, the quilt suddenly puffed up and started wobbling back and forth. His brow twitched slightly.
The alien on the other side of the video conference noticed Jiang Henian’s emotional fluctuation and quickly asked, “Mr. Jiang, what’s wrong?”
Jiang Henian shook his head: “Nothing.”
They were discussing a business deal. The Federation government wanted to acquire a batch of goods, and two countries were willing to trade with them. The responsibilities of a diplomat in the Interstellar Era were different from those of Ancient Earth; sometimes they also took on commercial trade matters.
Since there was no difference in choosing which country to trade with, Jiang Henian intended to just follow the procedures. Under the arrangements of his assistants, he was conducting sequential video conferences to negotiate with the kings of two different countries.
The king of the neighboring country before him looked like a glob of green slime. The part corresponding to a human mouth opened and closed repeatedly. Because he was too nervous, he started making small talk to fill the silence: “I saw Mr. Jiang’s foster brother on the news. He is truly a man of great talent.”
The neighboring diplomat’s heart instantly tightened. His soft body made of mucus turned visibly red as he began to worry: The news has brought a lot of public attention to the Diplomat’s friend, and Mr. Jiang has even been labeled a ‘Ultimate Brother-Con.’ Mr. Jiang, who always shows a cold face, might not like this title… Could the King’s words have angered Mr. Jiang?
Jiang Henian gazed at the “Juezhou-filled” quilt on the bed that had finally stopped squirming, and a hint of a smile appeared at the corners of his lips: “Mm.”
Neighboring Diplomat: ? Did I see that doting smile correctly?
The Neighboring King continued to praise: “He must be very excellent.”
“Yes, very excellent. He ranks first in every college evaluation and has won many certificates.” Jiang Henian clicked the screen of his neural link computer, displaying the various large and small awards Juezhou had received for the Neighboring King to see.
Once the topic turned to his younger brother, the Neighboring King stopped being nervous; he had a brother about the same age as Juezhou. Two “brother-cons” huddled together and began to chat fervently about educational issues.
The neighboring diplomat’s expression gradually changed from “OoO” at the beginning to “—_—”.
Finally, he spoke up softly to remind them: “Your Majesty, Mr. Jiang, regarding the matter of this cargo import…”
Planet Slime was quite backward and relied on importing and exporting goods to make a profit.
The corners of Jiang Henian’s eyes and brows were filled with a smile: “I will apply to the President to secure the maximum benefit for you.”
Juezhou felt his phone in his pocket and found that during his sleep, many classmates from school had sent him messages. The first few were all polite pleasantries, so Juezhou skipped them and read the last sentence.
[Mo Guan: Zhouzhou, are you coming to the school anniversary arts performance?]
Mo Guan was the President of the Student Union and often pulled Juezhou into activities, saying Juezhou could bring in “popularity.” Juezhou usually refused; after all, his essence was “universally loathed,” and he feared many people would be scared off by him.
He tapped out a reply with his fingers: [Not going. I have to stay home and paint.]
While waiting for Mo Guan’s reply, Juezhou exited to browse his Friend Circle and boredly opened the “Friend Music Chart.” Ranking first was actually Jiang Henian.
Jiang Henian rarely went online. Because his friend list was small, he hadn’t turned on his privacy protection settings. Out of curiosity, Juezhou clicked in to see and found that just today, Jiang Henian had listened to over four hours of Buddhist scriptures.
…The Diplomat’s hobbies were becoming stranger and stranger.
Mo Guan continued to message persistently: [Come on, come on! Several junior schoolmates asked me if you’d be coming this year.]
Juezhou: [No, I’m busy.]
Jiang Henian finished the video conference and walked over to see what Juezhou was doing. Juezhou quickly used his free hand to make half a heart for his brother.
Mo Guan: [Many freshmen girls will be there, and students from the neighboring Science College will come too! You’re about to graduate; you’ll never see so many girls gathered together again.]
Juezhou looked up at Jiang Henian and typed a reply with flying speed: [I do not have those kinds of worldly desires.]
Although Juezhou indeed really wanted a sweet romance, he would die and leave this world in half a year; it was better not to leave stray feelings and fail the hearts of girls. Juezhou’s current biggest goal was to work hard at playing the cannon fodder villain and save money to get a cute girlfriend in the real world.
[Mo Guan: Among the dance club participants, there’s the Cat-Ear Beauty you like.]
Juezhou’s typing hand paused slightly: [I think I have them again. What’s the specific time?]
Mo Guan gave the specific time, and Juezhou replied with an “OK” hand sign before quickly closing his laptop. He took a deep breath and met Jiang Henian’s gaze.
Jiang Henian: “Cat-Ear Beauty?”
“That…” Juezhou decided to change the subject. “By the way, Brother, why did you suddenly start listening to Buddhist scriptures?”
“I played it for you,” Jiang Henian said coldly, “to wash those ‘worldly desires’ out of your head.”
