- Chapter 10 - Ex-Boyfriend’s Big Wedding
The rain was pouring heavily.
Luo Nianshu turned her head to look at the window glass, watching raindrops winding and twisting down the pane, blurring the view outside.
People were bustling around her, hurriedly helping Qiao Jinyan put on a grey blue pearl feather dress, pinning it tightly around her slim waist, making her already slender figure appear even narrower.
Today was Wang Xu’s wedding day. Every staff member dared not mention a single word about Wang Xu’s wedding in front of Qiao Jinyan. She herself cooperated perfectly, acting as if nothing was wrong, even busier than usual.
She had packed her schedule full for today so full that anyone could tell it was deliberate.
Qiao Jinyan was busy among the crowd. In the morning, she had to try on clothes; in the afternoon, catch a flight to the U.S. By this time tomorrow, she’d be walking the red carpet in a gown promoting her movie.
“Assistant Three Million, what are you spacing out for? Help me get my bag,” Qiao Jinyan ordered while adjusting her dress.
Since that night, the atmosphere between the two of them had subtly changed. Qiao Jinyan felt shy whenever she was around Luo Nianshu, and Luo Nianshu… seemed a bit angry?
This timid yet shameless little kitten actually got mad at her?
Luo Nianshu quietly glanced at Qiao Jinyan but said nothing. She squeezed through the crowd and passed by Qiao Jinyan. Qiao Jinyan turned to look at her, hoping she would say something after all, they hadn’t really talked much since that night.
She admitted she had deliberately avoided Luo Nianshu these past few days, and of course Luo Nianshu noticed. But these days she just wanted to talk to someone and that someone could only be Luo Nianshu.
However, Luo Nianshu didn’t even glance at her and walked right past.
Luo Nianshu’s suppressed aura was too strong; others soon noticed, and the atmosphere in the room instantly grew cold.
Molly was stunned for a moment and also noticed Luo Nianshu’s unusual behavior this week. She had a premonition it was related to Qiao Jinyan, so she asked, “Yan Yan, do you know what’s wrong with Luo Nianshu?”
Qiao Jinyan was feeling embarrassed and resentful after being ignored by Luo Nianshu, so she snapped, “I don’t care about her. Let her do whatever she wants.”
Molly: “…” Looks like Yan Yan and the assistant had a big fight.
Luo Nianshu came to the dressing room alone without turning on the light.
The light on a rainy day was always darker than usual. The sky had just brightened, but the outside was still dark, making the inside even darker.
She sat alone on the bench, bending forward with her hands dangling between her legs, lost in thought.
“Qiao Jinyan, do you like me?”
The scene of their passionate kiss flashed through her mind.
“Too much.”
Qiao Jinyan’s words echoed in her ears.
Too much? Luo Nianshu smiled, kicked some messy clothes on the floor, and stood up to grab Qiao Jinyan’s bag to leave. But the room was too dark; she accidentally kicked something, stumbled, and fell to the ground.
Really unlucky, Luo Nianshu silently mocked herself.
She slowly turned to her side, realizing her leg was bruised badly. The pain spread from her knee, and she frowned, rubbing the edges of the bruises. Her eyes instinctively searched for the black bag that had fallen.
The longer she stayed in the dark, her eyes adjusted and things became clearer.
The black bag was under some clothes. It looked like a piece of paper had slipped out.
Luo Nianshu crawled over and lifted the clothes, picking up the paper and stuffing it into the bag.
But one second later, she realized something was wrong and pulled out the paper again.
Why was her name on the paper? Was Qiao Jinyan planning to sell her off?
Luo Nianshu gritted her teeth, struggling through the pain to stand and turned on the light, then read the paper aloud.
“I promise, after Qiao Jinyan drinks this cup of wine, I guarantee not to harass Luo Nianshu anymore, nor disclose her identity information. Signed: Zhang Weiyin.”
What did this mean? Drink wine? Zhang Weiyin?
Crash! A thunderclap outside lit up the entire room.
“Nianshu… I’m… for you… you owe me…”
“For you… Luo Nianshu…”
“…For you… Luo Nianshu…”
Memories flashed through Luo Nianshu’s mind like lightning. She suddenly understood what Qiao Jinyan meant that day.
Luo Nianshu was confused but quickly pieced it together. She realized Zhang Weiyin must have been threatening Qiao Jinyan by holding her identity info hostage, forcing her to drink the spiked wine.
So the root of Qiao Jinyan’s near violation was actually because of her?
“Goddess…” Luo Nianshu muttered sitting on the cold floor.
Qiao Jinyan would do such a thing for her?
Hadn’t she always despised her? Wasn’t tormenting her Qiao Jinyan’s pleasure?
Luo Nianshu was lost in thought.
Qiao Jinyan sat before the makeup mirror, tapping her toes lightly, showing signs of impatience.
The makeup artist didn’t dare make a sound, confused how the usually gentle and sweet goddess could be so distant now.
“What time is it now?” Qiao Jinyan asked.
The makeup artist replied nervously, “Just past 7:10.”
Qiao Jinyan frowned. Luo Nianshu had gone to get her bag but still hadn’t returned after half an hour. Had something happened?
She lifted her dress and suddenly stood up, startling the makeup artist who nearly fell.
Realizing she was too abrupt, Qiao Jinyan quickly put on a sweet smile and pulled the makeup artist’s hand: “Sorry to scare you, little brother. I’m going to the restroom.”
She pointed to the door and walked out slowly, then immediately quickened her pace toward the dressing room.
The light was still on, but no one was inside.
Qiao Jinyan’s eyes caught a piece of paper on the bench. She froze, understanding instantly.
She quickly dialed Luo Nianshu’s phone, but got several busy signals. A voice said Luo Nianshu’s phone was off.
Qiao Jinyan frowned, dialing Molly: “Molly, send people to find Luo Nianshu immediately.”
“What’s wrong? What happened?” Molly asked.
“I’m worried she’s going to find Zhang Weiyin,” Qiao Jinyan said anxiously.
Hearing Zhang Weiyin’s name, Molly’s face darkened. “I’ll send people now. Don’t worry, Zhang Weiyin isn’t someone Luo Nianshu can find easily.”
Qiao Jinyan nodded but felt uneasy, ordering staff to search the building for Luo Nianshu. Then she hurried to the security room.
“Show me the surveillance. I want to see where my assistant went.”
“Miss Qiao, we searched every room but found no trace.”
“Miss Qiao, the cameras show Luo Nianshu left the building forty minutes ago.”
Luo Nianshu left? Qiao Jinyan panicked even more. Was she going to confront Zhang Weiyin?
At that moment, Molly arrived: “Qiao Yan, Zhang Weiyin is currently promoting in the U.S., Luo Nianshu couldn’t have gone to find her.”
Qiao Jinyan relaxed a little but grew even more curious. Where did Luo Nianshu go?
Just then, Qiao Jinyan’s phone rang sharply, breaking the tense silence.
It was Luo Nianshu!
Qiao Jinyan was stunned but answered immediately, interrupting: “Three Million, where are you? That night had nothing to do with you. Don’t be delusional! Come back now!”
Luo Nianshu rubbed her nose on the other end: “Hey, Goddess, don’t worry. I won’t cause you trouble, so I definitely won’t look for Zhang Weiyin.”
Qiao Jinyan was so angry she nearly saw red: How could she be so carefree at such a time?
But she didn’t dare upset her and softened her voice: “Then where are you now? Please come back. We’ll go to the film festival together.”
“I might miss my flight, Goddess,” Luo Nianshu stretched and yawned, standing in the pouring rain without care. “But I have no regrets. I want to give you a gift.”
“I don’t want gifts, I want you. Come back to me now,” Qiao Jinyan pleaded, ignoring the shocked stares around her.
Luo Nianshu laughed on the phone.
“Goddess, I grew up with my grandma since childhood. My parents left early. Without guidance, I’ve been wild and unruly, relying on a despised job to survive, often acting like a little hooligan. But I’m upright and never hurt anyone until I hurt you.”
“Three Million…”
“Listen,” Luo Nianshu said calmly, “I know that night has been a barrier in your heart. You’re kind—even if you wanted revenge, you still helped me in danger. But you could never fully forgive me. What I didn’t expect was that you would make such a sacrifice for me.”
Yeah, they were like heaven and earth.
One shining brightly on stage, the other drifting the streets in a hated profession.
Just like now Qiao Jinyan in a pearl feather dress inside the warm air-conditioned room, Luo Nianshu in faded old clothes standing on the rainy open grass.
If not for that wedding crash, they would never have met.
Yet even so, the big boss, always reluctant to admit feelings, still wanted to give up something precious for her little rogue.
“Luo Nianshu…” Qiao Jinyan’s voice choked, “Come back… I wasn’t hurt that night…”
“What if I hadn’t arrived in time?” Luo Nianshu asked softly.
Qiao Jinyan said nothing.
Suddenly Luo Nianshu laughed, her voice returning to playful and light: “I said I’m giving you a big gift. Even if you don’t say it, I know you want it. I’ve always felt guilty to you, so this is my small compensation.”
“I don’t want it.”
Her voice grew gentle: “I don’t like owing people. Consider this gift repaying that night, okay?”
“No,” Qiao Jinyan gripped her phone tightly. “Come back now.”
Luo Nianshu chuckled and hung up.
“Three Million? Hello? Hello?” Qiao Jinyan shouted into the receiver, but only got busy signals.
She tried again, but Luo Nianshu’s phone was off again.
Molly anxiously asked, “Have you found Luo Nianshu?”
Qiao Jinyan shook her head, equally anxious.
She replayed the call in her mind.
In the noisy background, what music was that?
The wedding march!
Qiao Jinyan suddenly looked up.
“You’re the professional at helping people escape weddings, right? Go and mess up Wang Xu’s wedding for me.”
“I think I know where Luo Nianshu went…” Qiao Jinyan murmured.
Was Luo Nianshu really going to do that? She must be crazy! How could she manage it alone?
Would she get caught? Would netizens find her? Would Wang Xu throw dirty water on her?
Molly asked urgently, “Where did she go…?”
Before she could finish, Qiao Jinyan lifted her dress and dashed into the rain.
Molly was stunned for a moment, then ran after her: “Yan Yan, where are you going? Come back! We still have to catch the plane this afternoon!”
But Qiao Jinyan heard nothing maybe she didn’t want to.
She was stubborn and resolute. Once decided, no one could change her mind.
The rain drenched Qiao Jinyan. She didn’t care as she ran wildly through the storm.
She wanted to be faster and faster. She had to reach Luo Nianshu.
She needed Luo Nianshu to stand safely by her side and laugh like before.
Raindrops splashed on her face, even into her eyes, but she didn’t flinch.
She just wanted to run faster.
She wanted to see her.
Right now. This very second.
She wanted to see her Luo Nianshu.
