Chapter 66: Wife, Don’t Be Angry.
The phone in Wen Xi’s pocket beeped twice.
“Curiosity killed the cat,” Zhuang Yijia chuckled softly. “Wen Xi, why are you so persistent, so eager to see me? What’s the point?”
Wen Xi lowered her eyes, checked the time, and found it was still early, so she just silenced her phone.
Wen Xi said, “You know me, but I feel like I’ve never truly seen you clearly.”
Zhuang Yijia said, “That only means you’re too naive. You only think those who are kind to you are good people. It’s very easy to get close to you.”
“You don’t even know how to hide anything; you told me everything,” Zhuang Yijia looked at Wen Xi, trying to find a flaw beneath Wen Xi’s calm exterior. “You can only blame yourself for being too eye-catching. You blocked other people’s paths.”
Wen Xi was silent for a long time, then suddenly laughed, like melting ice and snow, or a sudden rain shower just stopped.
Zhuang Yijia deeply disliked Wen Xi’s appearance. She couldn’t understand how Wen Xi could still be doing so well after encountering such a huge event.
Wen Xi said, “Because at that time, I considered you a friend and trusted you. I don’t know how you came to these conclusions. I never thought I was eye-catching. I never blocked anyone’s path. The road is right there. Those who want to walk it will naturally walk it.”
“You didn’t block anyone’s path?” Zhuang Yijia’s gaze instantly locked onto Wen Xi. “You blocked mine! Do you know that wherever you were, everyone’s eyes would be on you? What about me? Am I just a foil?”
“Aren’t we supposed to be the same? Surrounded by the children of wealthy families, we couldn’t compete with them. We were supposed to be ordinary together! How could you betray that… You were good at everything—looks, grades, and artistic talent. Even the rumored arrogant Shen Yu treated you differently… Luckily, who would truly like you? See, I only spread some rumors, and now who looks at you favorably? They don’t think you’re pitiful; they just think you’re beneath contempt…”
Wen Xi unconsciously clenched her teeth tighter.
Zhuang Yijia continued, “Isn’t it obvious? I just hate you, I can’t stand you. I felt your life was too smooth, and I was jealous. I just wanted to give you an extraordinary experience during your school days. Are you satisfied now? This is the answer you wanted.”
Wen Xi’s voice also became slightly tense. “Yes, the answer I wanted… I didn’t know you hated me so much. Initially, I didn’t believe it was you. I left very quickly back then and even regretted not saying goodbye to you.”
“Are you starting to be sentimental?” Zhuang Yijia curled her lips. “Too bad. I was never sincere with you.”
“Zhuang Yijia,” Wen Xi called her name. “I just want to say, you are a failure.”
Hearing this, Zhuang Yijia violently turned her head and coughed a few times, then glared at Wen Xi with red eyes.
“You plotted for so long, trying to make me lose everything, but I’m still doing well. And you? Now you’ve made a desperate move, trying to ruin my reputation. Did you consider the consequences?” Wen Xi said almost calmly. “You said you were never sincere with me. Zhuang Yijia, who is sincere with you now?”
“Shut up!” Zhuang Yijia hissed. “You think you’re doing so great now. Haven’t you seen how many people are criticizing you online? Do you think a rich girl like Shen Yu likes you that much? She’s just intrigued by you, likes the excitement, and your voluntary breakup back then just left a deep impression on her memory. Just you wait, in the future…”
“And you,” Wen Xi interrupted her. “Has anyone ever loved you like that?”
When Wen Xi emerged, the sound of police sirens was very close.
The winter sun was unusually harsh. Wen Xi raised her hand to shield her eyes.
Pu Tao was nearby. Seeing Wen Xi come out, she breathed a sigh of relief. She ran over, grabbed Shen Yu’s hand, and whispered, “Boss, Ms. Shen is a little upset. She called you so many times, and you didn’t answer. She finally reached me.”
Wen Xi quietly gasped. “Didn’t I ask her to come an hour later… Did you tell her?”
“Ms. Shen’s tone was too anxious. I couldn’t help it,” Pu Tao put her hands together. “But she’s very calm now. You probably need to coax her.”
“You’ve worked hard too. That was very efficient,” Wen Xi sighed. She saw the police had already arrived. “Go and follow up with them. Where is Shen Yu? I’ll go and comfort her first.”
Wen Xi looked around and even saw Ke Han walking into the coffee shop. She exchanged a look with Ke Han, who shrugged and gave Wen Xi a look that said fend for yourself.
Pu Tao pointed in a direction. “In the car.”
With that, Pu Tao patted Wen Xi’s shoulder.
The black car was hidden in the shadow, very inconspicuous.
But just looking at the car, Wen Xi’s heart rate spiked again. Her wristband emitted a quiet alert.
Just as Wen Xi was about to approach the black car, the door was opened from the inside.
Wen Xi quietly thought, Oh no.
She slowly got into the car, carefully closed the door, and didn’t dare to look at Shen Yu, let alone meet her eyes, perfectly embodying the meaning of guilty conscience.
“CEO Shen,” the driver in front said, “where to now?”
Wen Xi heard Shen Yu say in a cold tone, “To the police station.”
After saying that, Shen Yu manually raised the partition in front.
The car started, and the car’s music automatically played.
In the back seat, Shen Yu leaned over and pressed Wen Xi against the backrest, kissing her. The kiss was forceful, carrying a punitive edge, yet Shen Yu was reluctant to bite Wen Xi’s lips, just repeatedly kneading the soft mouth.
After a while, Wen Xi couldn’t endure it anymore. Her fingertips pushed Shen Yu’s shoulder, her breathing ragged.
Shen Yu looked down at her, then returned to her seat. Only then did she say, “Don’t you know how to breathe anymore?”
“You kissed too urgently,” Wen Xi explained softly. “I didn’t have time.”
Shen Yu turned her head away, remaining silent, looking out the window.
Wen Xi sighed internally. She pulled Shen Yu’s sleeve and coaxed softly, “Wife… stop being angry.”
Shen Yu…
Shen Yu became even angrier.
The term of endearment she had been too shy to say before, she was now using to appease her.
Shen Yu was reluctant to push Wen Xi’s hand away, so she just tightened her grip on it.
“Do you know how anxious I was when I couldn’t get through to you?” Shen Yu’s throat tightened. “Wen Xi, I know you were afraid of worrying me, but we have better ways. We can discuss things.”
Wen Xi opened her mouth, but only said, “I’m sorry.”
“You knew it was dangerous. You knew I wouldn’t agree to you going to see her alone,” Shen Yu looked at her. “So you kept it from me again?”
Wen Xi scratched Shen Yu’s palm. “I wasn’t alone. I had my phone location shared, and Pu Tao was nearby.”
“You two are completely honest with each other, even sharing your location,” Shen Yu felt like her lungs were about to explode with anger. She took a deep breath. “Am I the only one who can’t know anything?”
“We always keep our location on because we use the same brand of phone,” Wen Xi watched Shen Yu’s expression, and quickly put her other hand on Shen Yu’s shoulder, trying to soothe her. “Listen to me. Just let me explain. I can explain.”
Wen Xi was actually very stubborn, always.
This had pros and cons. In the early stages of her business, whenever there was a disagreement with the team, Wen Xi would first brood for a while, then come out within an hour to call a meeting, asking everyone to express their thoughts so they could discuss and solve the problem together.
It was the same this time. She didn’t know why Zhuang Yijia did this. She was perplexed, she was sad, but at the same time, she knew that constantly self-reflecting and denying herself would only increase internal friction.
She needed to know why Zhuang Yijia did this.
Wen Xi was too prone to internal conflict, and this was hard to change. Persistent internal conflict also significantly reduced Wen Xi’s mental state.
She knew she should tell herself that she was not wrong.
But deep down, her mind raced, thinking it must be because she had done something wrong, otherwise why would Zhuang Yijia inexplicably do such a thing?
Wen Xi carefully shifted her position, getting closer and closer to Shen Yu, finally resting her head on Shen Yu’s shoulder. “She made me unhappy. I had to make her unhappy too.”
Was this what they called online: don’t internalize, externalize?
Wen Xi didn’t understand. She was just angry and knew Zhuang Yijia’s purpose for seeking her out.
But looking at Zhuang Yijia’s face and listening to her words, Wen Xi suddenly felt it wasn’t worth it. Being angry or sad over a person like that was pointless.
“She was almost driven mad by me. I’m living a hundred times better than her,” Wen Xi wrapped her fingers around Shen Yu’s hair. “I’m happy.”
Wen Xi heard Shen Yu sigh, and then Shen Yu lifted her chin. “Truly happy or falsely happy?”
Wen Xi smiled brightly. “Truly happy when you’re here. Falsely happy when you’re not.”
“…Always so sweet-mouthed,” Shen Yu said softly.
“And,” Wen Xi continued, “weren’t you looking for her? I know you’re amazing and would find her eventually, but now that I had the lead, I didn’t want you to have to put in more effort to search.”
Shen Yu looked at Wen Xi, narrowing her eyes slightly. “So I should thank you?”
“No, no need,” Wen Xi lightly coughed. “You were doing it for me, so I’m reducing the burden for us.”
“So?” Wen Xi carefully probed. “Not angry anymore?”
“Is that possible?” Shen Yu glanced at her. “Just wait.”
Who knew how terrified she was when she couldn’t get through to Wen Xi? All sorts of scenarios flashed through her mind… How could she not give her some punishment?
“Why did you silence your phone?” Thinking of this, Shen Yu asked again.
“At first, Pu Tao was sending me messages, and it was a bit noisy… and I saw that it was still early, so I thought you wouldn’t be arriving so quickly, that’s why I silenced it,” Wen Xi swore. “I promise, from now on, no matter where I am, I won’t silence it.”
Shen Yu added, “And bring a power bank when you travel.”
“Okay! I’ll listen to my wife!” Wen Xi agreed wholeheartedly.
Seeing that Wen Xi wasn’t taking this seriously, Shen Yu simply turned away to sulk.
After the two arrived at the police station, Wen Xi handed over the recording of her conversation with Zhuang Yijia.
This complicated things considerably. Spreading rumors, cyberbullying, and malicious incitement to school violence. The case would take some time to process, but Zhuang Yijia would be held accountable for her actions and words.
Zhuang Yijia had originally spoken so much to try and make Wen Xi’s mental state crumble, but unexpectedly, it became a piece of evidence against her.
The recording was played publicly. Shen Yu was present, gripping Wen Xi’s hand the entire time, her expression frighteningly calm.
In contrast, Wen Xi, having heard it once already, kept her head down, staring at the floor during the second playback.
After the group left the police station, Shen Yu said softly, “I shouldn’t have let you hear that.”
“It’s okay,” Wen Xi patted Shen Yu’s hand, offering a dry comfort. “It’s really okay.”
Shen Yu looked at Wen Xi silently, her heart tightly clenched.
The car was parked in the police station parking lot. The location was special, so there was no fear of being photographed.
After getting into the car, Wen Xi asked, “Should we go home for the luggage first?”
Shen Yu didn’t object.
But after Wen Xi went home and brought the luggage out, Shen Yu told the driver, “To the hotel.”
Wen Xi’s eyes widened. She instantly turned to look at Shen Yu. Shen Yu calmly met her gaze, and Wen Xi fell silent again.
Upon arriving at the hotel parking lot, Shen Yu got out first. Once Wen Xi was out, she immediately pressed Wen Xi into her arms, escorting her inside while shielding Wen Xi’s face completely.
“It’s no use. They definitely know it’s me,” Wen Xi’s voice was muffled against Shen Yu’s chest.
“No, they won’t,” Shen Yu said coolly. “The paparazzi might say I’m cheating on you with someone else.”
Wen Xi: “…”
