Chapter 62: Going Around in Circles
“? Why so certain? What if the two just have a good relationship? There are no intimate photos of them.”
Blogger replies: “Shen Yu and Twilight not issuing a statement right now is the best proof, isn’t it? I don’t believe they aren’t aware of this hot search.”
Two hours later, Pu Tao picked up Wen Xi at the VIP exit.
Although Wen Xi was wearing a mask, her eyes were dull, and Pu Tao’s heart immediately clenched.
Before either of them could say much, Wen Xi said, “Tell everyone that during this period, if they can work from home, they should. They don’t need to come to the studio.”
“Ah…” Pu Tao glanced at her cautiously. “Boss, did you look at Weibo?”
“No, Shen… she told me not to look,” Wen Xi shook her head. “I’m listening to her.”
“You don’t need to look at Weibo. What those people are saying isn’t nice. It’s the fan circle. Ms. Shen also has so-called rivals, and they’re muddying the waters. The things they are saying… their mouths are especially foul…” Pu Tao led Wen Xi to the parking lot, chattering nervously.
Before Pu Tao could finish speaking, Wen Xi suddenly felt nauseous.
Her stomach was churning. Wen Xi could only quickly walk to a nearby trash can, take off her mask, and dry-heave against the wall.
Pu Tao was startled. “What’s wrong? Is your stomach acting up? Did you eat dinner?”
Wen Xi dry-heaved without bringing anything up. She crouched down and took a moment to recover. “I ate some bread and airplane food.”
Wen Xi looked up at Pu Tao, the corners of her eyes stained red.
Pu Tao walked over and patted Wen Xi’s back, frowning tightly. “Do you want some hot water? I’ll go up and get some. You wait for me in the car.”
“No need,” Wen Xi said softly. “Let’s go back first. Don’t stay outside.”
As Wen Xi spoke, she pressed the power button on her phone. It showed 4% battery remaining.
Wen Xi hesitated for a few moments, then sent a message to Shen Yu.
T.T: “Pu Tao got me. My phone is almost dead. I’ll call you back when I get home.”
Shen Yu hadn’t dared to put her phone down and replied instantly when she received Wen Xi’s message.
S: “Be careful. Tell me when you get home.”
Wen Xi stared at Shen Yu’s message for a few seconds before reluctantly locking the screen.
On the way back, Wen Xi kept looking out the window.
It was very dark outside. Colored lights flashed quickly on the roadside trees. Wen Xi felt, for the first time, that the light was harsh. Otherwise, why would her eyes feel so sore and unbearable?
Pu Tao was about to say something on the road, but seeing Wen Xi closing her eyes as if napping, she held back.
What kind of situation is this?
While waiting for Wen Xi, Pu Tao had been scrolling through Weibo, finding it hard to imagine how people could harbor such malice toward someone they had never met.
It’s just dating, right?
It’s just dating.
Pu Tao softly exhaled, her anger difficult to quell.
Upon reaching the residential area, Pu Tao escorted Wen Xi upstairs.
Since Wen Xi had moved into this home, the guest room hadn’t been tidied and had a thin layer of dust.
Pu Tao was about to start cleaning, but Wen Xi walked over after charging her phone. “It’s too late to clean now. You don’t need to stay with me. I’m fine.”
“But I always used to…” Pu Tao was stunned.
“It’s okay. I wouldn’t do anything silly. I haven’t even logged into Weibo.” Wen Xi leaned against the door, forcing a smile. “I promised her. I’m going to be with her forever.”
Pu Tao became flustered. “I’m just worried about you.”
Wen Xi pressed her stomach and suggested, “Then come over early tomorrow to stay with me? It’s too late today. If you clean and tidy up, who knows when you’ll get to sleep.”
Pu Tao stood still, looked at Wen Xi a few times, and compromised. “Then let me make you some brown sugar water first. You were feeling nauseous earlier, weren’t you?”
“Okay,” Wen Xi said. “Thank you for your trouble, Tao Tao.”
While Pu Tao was in the kitchen, Wen Xi started unpacking her suitcase.
“…Do you need my help?” In the quiet environment, a voice suddenly sounded.
Wen Xi’s hand, holding clothes, trembled. She pretended not to hear anything. She didn’t dare turn around, only placing the clothes into the closet.
“…I can always be with you,” a sigh slowly drifted over. “Haven’t I been all these years?”
Wen Xi took a few steps forward, grabbed her phone charging on the bedside table, and quickly called Shen Yu.
The phone rang for a few seconds, then a voice said, “The party you are calling is currently on another call.”
“Everyone is so busy… only I am here when you need me,” the voice seemed to loop in Wen Xi’s ears. “You really listen to her, not looking at Weibo… and not wanting me either…”
Wen Xi bit down hard on her lower jaw, covering her ears with her hands, but the voice still came through in her mind.
A familiar yet strange tone, saying things Wen Xi didn’t want to hear.
Fake is still fake, not even a good imitation, yet trying to replace the real person.
Wen Xi was lost in thought for a moment. By the time she reacted, she heard the sound of glass shattering on the floor.
Wen Xi looked at her right hand and heard her own rapid breathing.
She had just picked up the glass cup from the bedside table and thrown it behind her. It was so fast that she didn’t see the shadow of the speaking “person” before it disappeared from where it stood.
It was as if everything that happened was Wen Xi’s illusion.
There was no “person” beside her, and she hadn’t heard a voice.
“…Why? Because the fake is fake,” Wen Xi said in a low voice. “My treasure has returned to me. She said she will love me forever and stay by my side forever. I believe her.”
A void in Wen Xi’s heart had been quickly filled by Shen Yu.
Pu Tao, hearing the noise in the kitchen, rushed over. Seeing the broken glass on the floor, she subconsciously wanted to pull Wen Xi away from the fragments.
“My hand slipped,” Wen Xi opened her right hand. “I wanted to take the cup to get some water.”
Pu Tao pursed her lips. “Then come here. Go sit on the living room sofa. I’ll clean this up. Don’t touch any of this.”
Wen Xi sighed quietly. “I’m telling the truth.”
Pu Tao wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and turned to get the broom. “I didn’t say you were lying.”
Wen Xi was shooed by Pu Tao to sit on the sofa. Wen Xi also knew that her current state was not suitable for looking at other social media platforms, so she guarded her phone, waiting for Shen Yu to call back.
Wen Xi quietly counted in her heart. Before she reached thirty, the phone rang.
“Baby, you’re home,” Shen Yu said. “I was on another call just now. I’m sorry, Baby.”
“I know. You’re busy right now,” Wen Xi swung her foot. “What do you need me to do?”
Shen Yu chuckled softly. “I do need something. I need you to go to sleep early, eat breakfast and lunch on time tomorrow, and wait for me at home.”
“What kind of task is that? Too easy,” Wen Xi gripped the sofa fabric with her other hand. “I want a different task.”
“Do you trust me, Baby?” Shen Yu’s words were like feathers, tickling Wen Xi’s heart. “Let’s switch roles. You protected me once before. This time, you don’t need to worry. Leave everything to me, okay?”
Shen Yu used a negotiating tone, as if afraid Wen Xi wouldn’t agree.
“I haven’t looked at Weibo,” Wen Xi said. “How big is the impact on you right now?”
She had lied to Shen Yu, saying she deleted Weibo, but she hadn’t. Yet, she looked at the Weibo icon and couldn’t bring herself to tap it.
Never mind. It would only spoil her mood to look.
Shen Yu spoke playfully. “What if it’s a big impact? Will you support me if I lose my job?”
Wen Xi paused, then said, “My studio’s revenue this year has doubled compared to last year. I can support you.”
Shen Yu laughed a few more times. “No more jokes. Ke Han just scolded me. I told her to sign a few new artists, so she wouldn’t be pitiful without an artist to manage later.”
Shen Yu added, “But if she signs artists, they will join my studio, and I’ll still make money.”
Wen Xi quietly commented, “Heartless boss.”
Shen Yu protested. “How am I heartless? I have a red heart.”
“Be serious,” Wen Xi said gently. “You’re distracting me again.”
Shen Yu: “I’m not distracting you. The worst-case scenario is just what I said.”
“However, before that, or maybe tomorrow, I will issue a lawyer’s letter first.”
Wen Xi asked, “Saying they are spreading rumors? And don’t people say lawyer’s letters are useless?”
“Trust the speed of my legal team,” Shen Yu said. “I need to sue them for malicious personal attacks.”
“…” Wen Xi frowned, her head throbbing slightly. “Then a lawyer’s letter is necessary.”
“What are you doing now?”
“Pu Tao made me brown sugar water. I’m drinking it.”
“Get some rest early.”
“I know. I’m getting ready to take a shower.”
Shen Yu thought of something. “It’s a shame we can’t video chat today. I still have people around me.”
“…Mhm,” Wen Xi whispered.
“Is your stomach still bothering you?” Pu Tao asked before leaving.
“Much better,” Wen Xi shook her head. “The sugar water helped a lot.”
“Take some medicine if it starts bothering you again,” Pu Tao instructed. “I’ll take you to the hospital tomorrow.”
“Got it,” Wen Xi waved her hand. “Be careful going home.”
Wen Xi had hung up the phone not long ago. Shen Yu seemed to have another matter to attend to; people kept looking for her.
As soon as Pu Tao left, Wen Xi couldn’t help but walk into the bathroom. Coughing and dry-heaving immediately erupted from inside.
Eventually, stomach acid came up. Wen Xi’s stomach was empty, and she had no appetite.
She turned on the faucet and washed her face, looking at her reflection in the mirror—her expression was tear-stained, terribly ugly.
Water droplets on her face slid down her cheeks and hit the back of her hand.
It was strange. The ice-cold water that ran down her face felt scalding hot.
Wen Xi had only one thought now: she couldn’t lose Shen Yu again, as long as Shen Yu didn’t give up on her.
She had promised to love Shen Yu for a long, long time.
Let all those people scold her. She was the one who confessed to Shen Yu first, and she was the one who agreed to reconcile with Shen Yu.
She was selfish, wanting to cohabitate with Shen Yu, wanting to live with Shen Yu.
Wen Xi had expected this day to come; she just didn’t expect it to arrive so quickly.
Wen Xi felt a rush of confusion. Didn’t she break up with Shen Yu back then because she was afraid of affecting Shen Yu?
It felt like they had gone around in circles, only to end up with the same result.
…But at least Shen Yu’s art exam went smoothly.
The world seemed to be telling Wen Xi that it had its own operating rules, which could not be changed, only followed.
Wen Xi walked back to the bedroom and curled up into a ball on the bed.
She did nothing wrong. She protected Shen Yu. She had no regrets.
Before making any decision, Wen Xi habitually asked herself, Will I regret this later?
No. She would not regret it.
Because Shen Yu didn’t blame her. Shen Yu still loved her. Shen Yu even looked at her with those focused and gentle eyes.
On the other side, Shen Yu lowered her eyes, looking at the message Shen Shi had sent.
S: “I understand.”
Shen Shi: “It’s my fault for not watching him. It’s my mistake.”
S: “You’re busy with work. You can’t be blamed.”
Shen Yu looked at the message from Shen Shi, finding it funny.
Shen Shi had just said that the person who posted the thread wouldn’t be caught quickly. How was it that the speed suddenly accelerated, and the mastermind was already apprehended?
