Chapter 61: Go Back to Wancheng
“You would agree to that?” Shen Yu looked up at her.
“I don’t recommend it,” Ke Han admitted frankly. “Your career is still on the rise.”
“She thinks so too,” Shen Yu closed her eyes. “She doesn’t want to go public with me.”
Shen Yu said, “But what use is this reputation to me now? From the start, I thought I had to become famous, I had to be seen by Wen Xi often, I couldn’t let her forget me. I wanted to leave a path for her, so if she was willing to come back to me, I would be waiting for her.”
Shen Yu only wanted to spend her life happily with Wen Xi, but why was it so difficult?
Ke Han: “I’m just clarifying the consequences for you. You need to calm down right now. You can discuss the plan with her later. It’s okay not to issue a statement for now. Less said, less wrong. I’ll control the heat first.”
Although, judging by the current situation, controlling the heat didn’t seem to make much difference.
After speaking, Ke Han called to arrange for bodyguards and a car. There would be many people blocking the way back to the hotel.
“If anyone asks you later,” Ke Han looked at her, “don’t say anything.”
Shen Yu softly hummed in agreement.
Her gaze was fixed on the phone screen, watching Wen Xi’s pictures being recklessly reposted. Her expression was cold, but her heart was filled with anger. She silently took screenshots and archived the most popular posts.
The Shen family had dedicated lawyers and a public relations team. Just because she rarely used them and never had the opportunity to, didn’t mean she didn’t have the right to.
Ke Han’s hunch was right. When they returned to the hotel, a crowd of people was indeed blocking the area. Security could only cordon off a small space to prevent them from blocking the road completely.
Shen Yu was escorted out of the car by bodyguards, and the surrounding noise abruptly intensified.
It was hard to distinguish between the marketing accounts and the fans in the crowd, but all of them wanted an explanation from Shen Yu.
Someone shouted loudly, “Shen Yu, are you really dating?”
Shen Yu pretended not to hear. The team following Shen Yu had never felt this short walk was so long.
“Then be happy! Your happiness is more important than anything,” another girl cried out hoarsely. “Don’t care about what others think. Fans will respect you, and she’s a good person. We will like her too!!”
The “she” clearly referred to Wen Xi.
Shen Yu paused, looking up at the speaking girl. Shen Yu knew her, even remembered her name; she was a fan who often met her offline.
Ke Han urged from the side, “Let’s go, too many people are looking at you.”
Shen Yu could only nod briefly at the fan, then quickly walked inside.
Back in the room, Ke Han immediately started making and receiving calls, busy as a bee.
Ke Han managed to squeeze in a word to Shen Yu. “The director just informed me that you’ll film a few short scenes tomorrow morning, and then they’ll give you a day or two off to handle this matter.”
Shen Yu’s gaze quickly fell on Ke Han.
Ke Han sighed. “I’ve thanked them. You should go thank them too when you go back.”
As expected, a few more hot search keywords popped up: Shen Yu’s First Appearance After Scandal, Shen Yu Cold Face…
“She appeared but still didn’t respond? Is this confirmation by silence?”
“Responding takes time, right? They still need to write a public relations statement.”
“I feel like they’re dating. Otherwise, they would have debunked the rumors already.”
“And what if they are dating? Is she stealing your rice? Why are you so bothered?”
When Wen Xi woke up on the plane, she felt her heart beating very fast.
She removed her eye mask, frowned, and took a few deep breaths, but it didn’t help.
This business trip had a heavy filming schedule, and she hadn’t rested well. Wen Xi had been mostly asleep on the plane, so she attributed the rapid heartbeat to lack of sleep.
Wen Xi sighed softly. By the time she woke up, the plane was almost ready to land.
She was wearing a black overcoat, the loose belt faintly outlining her waist.
She followed the crowd toward the exit, dragging her suitcase with one hand and turning off her phone’s airplane mode with the other.
She had many messages, but before Wen Xi could read them, Shen Yu’s call popped up on the screen.
“Ah, I just landed, and you called right away,” Wen Xi said. “Such great timing?”
“Baby…” Shen Yu’s voice was tinged with an indescribable hoarseness. “Do you have a mask? Put on a mask first.”
“I do, I’ve put it on. Are you coming to pick me up?” Wen Xi had mild rhinitis, so she kept a few masks in her shoulder bag. After Wen Xi asked this, she sensed Shen Yu’s silence, and a rare tension filled the air between them.
Wen Xi’s eyes slightly dropped. “Or… did something happen?”
Wen Xi heard Shen Yu’s breathing deepen. Shen Yu evaded the question. “Be good, listen to me first. You’ll see two bodyguards at the exit. You’ve seen them when you were with me, so they should look familiar. They will protect you. Baby, go back to Wancheng first. Ke Han has bought the plane ticket. I’ll come to find you tomorrow, okay?”
Towards the end, Shen Yu’s voice became softer and softer. It was the first time Wen Xi had heard Shen Yu speak to her with such a fragile tone.
Fragile—the word did not suit Shen Yu at all.
Wen Xi stopped in her tracks, her heart seeming to drop into a bottomless abyss. She vaguely wondered what had happened. After thinking it over, only one possibility remained.
…She and Shen Yu had been exposed.
“…Okay,” Wen Xi said. “I’ll wait for you to find me.”
Shen Yu’s tone did not lighten. “Now, listen to me. Delete your Weibo. Tell me if anything happens.”
Wen Xi smiled, paused for a few seconds, did nothing, but simply raised her hand and pressed her chest. “It’s deleted.”
“Don’t hang up the phone, Baby,” Shen Yu instructed. “Turn on Bluetooth and hang up when you board the plane.”
Wen Xi softly replied, “Okay.”
Her earphones were in her bag. When she took them out, she realized her hands were shaking. The small in-ear headphone didn’t stay in her grasp for a few seconds and fell to the floor.
The sound of the earphone hitting the floor was light, but Wen Xi’s heart sank abruptly.
Wen Xi stared at the earphone that rolled a short distance away, regretting that she couldn’t even hold onto her earphone properly.
Wen Xi reluctantly took a few steps forward to pick it up, wiped it clean with tissue paper, and put it on. She listened to Shen Yu asking what happened, smiling easily. “Nothing, the earphone fell on the floor.”
She listened to Shen Yu say she had arranged a VIP channel for her, told her not to overthink anything, and to call her back after landing.
Wen Xi actually felt numb. There were indeed many people at the exit. She didn’t know if they were staking her out, and she didn’t care to know.
No one could easily recognize Wen Xi with a mask on just from having seen a photo.
Wen Xi was smoothly picked up by the bodyguards and safely escorted to the airport lounge.
Along the way, Wen Xi didn’t say much, only simply responding to Shen Yu.
Shen Yu was silent for a while, then spoke again, her voice carrying a light smile. “Baby, what are you doing now?”
Wen Xi nestled on the sofa in the lounge, tightening her coat. “Nothing, just waiting to board.”
Besides Wen Xi, there were others in the lounge, so Wen Xi spoke softly, afraid of disturbing anyone.
She flipped her phone over onto her lap, gripping it tightly.
Besides Shen Yu’s voice, there were other voices in her earphone, loud and messy. It was clear that this incident had caused Shen Yu and her team a lot of trouble. Wen Xi felt that she needed to be obedient and not cause any more trouble.
“Baby, do you miss me?” Shen Yu asked.
Wen Xi: “…Yes.”
“I’ll be there tomorrow,” Shen Yu smiled. “It won’t be long. Just a night’s sleep and a meal, and I’ll appear before your eyes.”
Wen Xi quietly hummed. “I know.”
Before boarding, Wen Xi told Shen Yu she had to hang up.
She didn’t dare look at her phone while talking to Shen Yu. Shen Yu was very smart; if her tone was even slightly off, Shen Yu would definitely guess something was wrong.
But even so, she only dared to look at WeChat messages.
Many people had messaged her. Lu Xuan Yi and Pu Tao were the most frequent. Yu Qiao had just gone abroad a few days ago, and probably still didn’t know.
It was better if he didn’t know. That was one less person to worry about her unnecessarily. She was clearly fine.
Wen Xi thought blankly, reading the bold text, her fingers mechanically typing, saying she knew, she was boarding, and she’d talk later.
…Okay, so she and Shen Yu had been photographed a long time ago.
If she had known, she would have been more careful, not letting Shen Yu move in or moving out herself… Wen Xi frowned, then asked herself: Do you really regret living with Shen Yu?
After Wen Xi hung up, Shen Yu called another number, her voice turning serious. “You still haven’t found her?”
“Sis,” Shen Yu’s younger brother, Shen Shi, sighed. “It’s not that fast. I don’t have a hacker here.”
“Hurry up.”
Shen Shi replied, “It will be soon. We can basically narrow down her approximate location. I’ll give you an answer tomorrow noon.”
Shen Yu hung up first.
A laptop was placed in front of Shen Yu, the light illuminating her face and making it look pale.
It was obvious that the Weibo posts in front of her didn’t say anything good.
Someone claiming to be Wen Xi’s former classmate appeared, hinting in every sentence that Wen Xi and Shen Yu had engaged in puppy love (dating in high school).
They also claimed that Wen Xi was aloof in high school, acting arrogant due to her superior art talent, and never looking people in the eye.
The labels of puppy love and lesbianism were instantly slapped onto the two of them.
“Shen Yu is a public figure, involved in both puppy love and lesbianism. Isn’t that a bad influence? What if some of her fans are minors? Isn’t this corrupting minors?”
“Twilight doesn’t bother with people, and Shen Yu is the same on set. Lol. They’re a pair, alright.”
“Isn’t Twilight a photographer? She used to study art. Why the career change?”
“She probably failed the art exam. She doesn’t have the talent but acts pretentious. I’m sick of people like this.”
“? This person doesn’t even have a single picture. Don’t listen to her one-sided story. Don’t be a fence-sitter on the internet.”
What made Shen Yu most uneasy was that the blogger replied to the comment about the lack of pictures.
Blogger replied: “I have pictures, still compiling them. Don’t rush. I wouldn’t speak without evidence.”
The blogger even added some ambiguous comments in the comment section.
Blogger comment: “Once, I saw Wen Xi return from the restroom with her clothes wet, and she was wearing an extra jacket, a brand name, very expensive. I only remember Shen Yu wearing that one.”
“? Why would her clothes be wet after returning from the restroom?”
“There are many reasons why clothes could be wet. Can the blogger stop making random comments?”
“…The malice is huge. I’m starting to be suspicious.”
