Chapter 51.2: Video Call
The next three days were neither long nor short.
Yet, it was the first time the two of them had been separated for this long since they got back together.
Although Wen Xi didn’t say anything, in their brief video calls each night, Wen Xi’s eyes were completely fixed on Shen Yu, unable to look away. She was like a little hook, softening Shen Yu’s heart.
When the variety show ended, dusk was setting, and the production team discussed holding a “wrap-up” party. A lot of good wine was on the table, tempting Wen Xi’s slight craving for alcohol.
Lu Xuan Yi looked at Wen Xi’s eyes, clicked her tongue, and poured a small amount into Wen Xi’s glass. “You can only drink this much.”
A nearby guest sitting next to them teased, “Little Lu is managing Teacher Twilight so strictly?”
“Hey, you can’t say that,” Lu Xuan Yi quickly waved her hand. “It’s just that she has a stomach condition, and drinking too much is bad for her.”
“It’s right to keep it under control then,” the person nodded knowingly.
Before the banquet began, Lu Xuan Yi, relying on her phone’s privacy screen protector, rapidly typed a message to Wen Xi.
Lu Xuan Yi: “Oh my god, she better not get me into trouble.”
Wen Xi: “? What’s wrong?”
Lu Xuan Yi: “You’re already taken! If your partner hears something like that, she’ll get seriously jealous!”
Wen Xi couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time.
Wen Xi: “She’s not that jealous. She has a very good personality.”
Lu Xuan Yi: “…”
Being told once again that Shen Yu had a good personality, Lu Xuan Yi had to pause and think. Could it be that she was looking at Shen Yu through biased glasses?
After three rounds of drinks, many people toasted Wen Xi. Whether for collaboration or social networking, Wen Xi found it hard to refuse. Lu Xuan Yi wasn’t powerful enough to stop it, so she could only anxiously watch Wen Xi drink several cups of wine.
When the banquet was over, Lu Xuan Yi gently hooked Wen Xi’s arm to lend her support. They returned to the hotel and packed Wen Xi’s luggage together. On the way downstairs, Lu Xuan Yi wore her mask, covering herself completely.
Lu Xuan Yi sighed a few times. “What now? Should I find someone to drive you back?”
“Sure,” Wen Xi, sobered slightly by the evening breeze, said, “I can also just take a taxi back.”
“It’s too late for that, and you’ve been drinking,” Lu Xuan Yi picked up her phone, ready to have her manager arrange a car. She had a flight early tomorrow morning to join a new production crew after leaving Bay City.
“I drank, but I’m not drunk,” Wen Xi leaned gently on Lu Xuan Yi, lazily saying, “I have good alcohol tolerance.”
“You were greedy, mixing different kinds of alcohol,” Lu Xuan Yi said. “When you get back, remember to have your partner cook you a hangover soup, or you’ll be in trouble.”
“Got it, got it,” Wen Xi slowly nodded.
There were few stars in the sky tonight, and the moon was hiding behind the clouds. It was 9 PM now. They would get home around 10 PM. Shen Yu said she would wait for her to return.
Thinking this, Wen Xi asked, “Did you find a car?”
“Are you in a hurry to go home?” Lu Xuan Yi didn’t lift her head. “Almost. The car will take a moment to drive over.”
Just as Lu Xuan Yi finished speaking, two dark cars pulled up nearby with their lights on. Lu Xuan Yi let out a sound of surprise and looked up. “Speak of the devil… huh?”
A person pushed open the car door and stepped out. Delicate, voluminous waves of hair swayed slightly with the movement. Wen Xi, who had been leaning on Lu Xuan Yi, instantly straightened up. Her previously languid mood was immediately rekindled. “Why did you come here?”
“To take you home.” Shen Yu raised her hand and gently flicked Wen Xi’s forehead with a bent finger, then took the suitcase from Wen Xi’s hand.
She then greeted Lu Xuan Yi briefly. “Teacher Lu.”
Lu Xuan Yi was a little flattered.
Shen Yu opened the trunk and lifted the suitcase into it with one hand. After setting the luggage down, Shen Yu turned back and took Wen Xi’s hand. “Shall I take her away now?”
“No problem,” Lu Xuan Yi couldn’t help but straighten her posture. “Have a safe trip.”
Shen Yu didn’t leave yet, seeing Wen Xi’s eyes entirely focused on her. She said helplessly, “Baby.”
Wen Xi tightly held Shen Yu’s hand, tilting her head. “What is it?” Wen Xi looked up and met Shen Yu’s gaze for a few seconds before saying, “Oh. Xuan Yi, goodbye. Be careful tomorrow!”
Lu Xuan Yi secretly laughed bitterly. She thought that “abandoning a friend for a lover” must be a perfect description of Wen Xi. However, she had never seen Wen Xi like this in all these years, and it was quite good. When Lu Xuan Yi first met Wen Xi, she thought she was an ice block, then she thought she was a cold-on-the-outside-warm-on-the-inside ice block. Now, she felt that Wen Xi was truly meant to be passionate and free.
It suited her well.
In the car, Shen Yu buckled Wen Xi’s seatbelt and then rubbed her head. “You drank this much?”
“I didn’t drink that much,” Wen Xi exclaimed, hugging Shen Yu’s arm with both hands. “It’s just the smell I picked up at the banquet.”
Shen Yu stared into Wen Xi’s eyes for a few seconds. Without saying much, she leaned in and kissed Wen Xi, a lingering kiss filled with longing and affection. After a long moment, Shen Yu pulled back slightly and pressed the corner of Wen Xi’s mouth. “I’ll cook you hangover soup when we get home.”
Wen Xi realized what happened and covered her mouth with her hand.
Shen Yu paused. “What’s wrong?”
“Will you be tested for drunk driving?” Wen Xi frowned. “…We just kissed.”
Shen Yu: “…”
Shen Yu: “Baby, you’re drunk.”
Wen Xi lowered her head. “Oh, alright.”
Wen Xi was genuinely tired from the past three days. Not long after Shen Yu started driving, Wen Xi fell asleep. Shen Yu drove smoothly, and Wen Xi slept soundly.
They arrived at the apartment complex about ten minutes later than planned. Shen Yu couldn’t bear to wake Wen Xi. After taking Wen Xi’s suitcase out, she opened the passenger door, intending to carry Wen Xi on her back. Shen Yu had been exercising in the gym for years, so carrying Wen Xi was easy, but unfortunately, Wen Xi woke up midway and wouldn’t let her.
Wen Xi took Shen Yu’s hand and shook her head slightly. “You still have to push the suitcase.” It wasn’t far from the underground parking lot to the apartment, and there was an elevator. Shen Yu felt Wen Xi was incredibly clingy today, but Shen Yu enjoyed it.
The longing had been silent, but the air was now filled with a different kind of closeness.
Back home, Shen Yu pushed the suitcase into the bedroom. As soon as she turned around, Wen Xi bumped into her arms. Shen Yu naturally opened her embrace and held Wen Xi, rubbing her head and slightly messing up her hair. “Did you miss me a lot?”
“Is that not allowed?” Wen Xi’s voice was muffled against Shen Yu’s chest. Smelling the familiar scent of Shen Yu’s shower gel and laundry detergent, she felt at home.
“Allowed, of course, it’s allowed.” Shen Yu sighed inwardly, her eyes, filled with deep meaning, hidden by her lashes. “I missed you too.”
Wen Xi chuckled twice. “I was just worried about what we’d do when you go back to filming.”
“You were able to tolerate it well before, weren’t you?” Shen Yu’s fingertip lifted Wen Xi’s chin, with a hint of settling old scores. “You didn’t reply to my messages.”
“Aiya, I was wrong.” Wen Xi squinted and pressed Shen Yu’s hand against her face. “I just didn’t know how to reply. Back then, the thing I did most often every day was click into WeChat and look at the messages you sent me.”
During that time, Wen Xi’s WeChat usage time increased significantly. She didn’t do anything else but stare at Shen Yu’s messages, either spacing out or overthinking. However, there was a certain peace, an ineffable sense of security.
“…Were you overthinking?” Shen Yu paused her breathing. “Was I bothering you too much?” Shen Yu knew Wen Xi’s condition had drastically declined when they first reunited.
“Mmm,” Wen Xi hugged Shen Yu tightly, vaguely saying, “I forgot!”
Shen Yu soothingly stroked Wen Xi’s back, feeling her slender, thin body, and whispered, “Then, if anything bothers you or makes you unhappy in the future, tell me, okay?”
Wen Xi fully agreed: “Okay!”
