After the Fake Young Master Betrayed the Australian Farmer - Chapter 38
“Adams, come here.”
Han Yan did not know why Adams had appeared there, and he did not want to dwell on the grievances between them. At this moment, he desperately needed someone to be with him, a shoulder to lean on, otherwise, he feared he truly might not hold up.
Han Yan gripped the hem of Adams’s shirt tightly, buried his face in his shoulder, and let out low sobs from his throat.
This was the scene Han Jue witnessed when he arrived at the emergency room door. Adams had his hand resting on the back of Han Yan’s head; his palm was so large it nearly covered Han Yan’s entire head. Adams seemed to sense Han Jue’s gaze and looked up to meet his eyes, raising an index finger to his lips.
Han Jue understood immediately. Han Yan really needed to vent. He had been suppressing his emotions since yesterday; several times his eyes had turned red, yet he had forced the tears back. It was painful to watch. Han Jue did not step forward; he turned and walked a short distance away to call and notify Xie Lan and the others.
After a long wait, the moment the emergency room light went out, Han Yan stood up abruptly, and his vision went black. If Adams had not caught his shoulders in time, he likely would not have been able to stand.
Xie Lan was the first to rush forward to meet the doctor coming out of the room. “Doctor, how is Zhiyun?” Her brow was furrowed, and she squeezed the web of her hand so hard the skin turned white. Xie Yu hurried forward to support his mother’s arm.
“The patient’s vital signs have returned to normal. After a night of observation, if everything is fine, she can be moved to a general ward tomorrow.”
Hearing this, Xie Lan’s brow relaxed. She pressed her palms together in front of her chest and murmured, “Buddha bless her, truly, Buddha bless her.”
Adams saw that Han Yan was dazed, as if he had not quite processed the doctor’s words. He squeezed Han Yan’s shoulder and whispered, “Han Yan, the doctor said your mother is fine. Do not worry.”
Han Yan blinked his dry eyes slowly. His swollen eyelids were half drooped, and his throat felt as if it were coated in lead. He spoke with difficulty, “Mom is fine?”
“Yes, she is truly fine.” Han Jue patted his back gently.
Han Yan stared mechanically at the person being wheeled out of the emergency room. In an instant, it felt as if all his strength had been drained. His body went limp, and his consciousness faded into darkness.
His dreams were chaotic, filled with scattered fragments that finally settled on a white cloth covering a hospital bed. From beneath the cloth, a pale, lifeless arm hung down.
“Mom!”
He woke up with a start, bolting upright in bed, gasping for breath with lingering terror in his eyes.
“You are awake?”
A voice sounded beside him. He instinctively turned toward it, and a warm palm pressed against his forehead.
“The fever has broken. Do you feel unwell anywhere else?” Adams wiped the cold sweat from Han Yan’s forehead with his thumb and withdrew his hand.
Han Yan stared into those emerald green eyes and said hoarsely, “My mother,”
“Your mother has already woken up. She is in the next room. Aunt Xie and Han Jue are with her now.”
Han Yan threw back the covers to get out of bed, not noticing the intravenous needle in the back of his hand. The infusion tube swayed violently in the air with his movement. Adams quickly supported his arm and unhooked the bottle from the stand.
“You are still on an intravenous drip. Slow down.” He carefully supported Han Yan’s hand, holding the bottle high as he strode alongside him.
Stopping at the door of the ward, Han Yan took a deep breath. He raised his slightly trembling hand, then curled his fingers back, a bit afraid. Just as he was hesitating, the ward door opened from the inside. Xie Lan walked out holding a thermos and ran right into him.
Xie Lan paused upon seeing Han Yan, then smiled. “Xiaoyan, you are awake? Zhiyun and I were just talking about you. If I had not stopped her, she would have rushed to your room to see you herself. Why are you standing here? Go on in.”
She stepped aside to make a path for him. Han Yan’s gaze fell upon the woman on the bed, who was talking and laughing with the person beside her. Hearing the noise, the woman turned to meet his eyes. Though her face was still pale and weak, her eyes were bright, vivid, and full of life.
“Xiaoyan.”
Song Zhiyun curled her lips and waved him over. He walked toward her instinctively. Han Jue stood up, and Adams hung the bottle on the hook, nodding to Song Zhiyun before exiting the room with Han Jue to give the mother and son some space.
“Son, sit down.” Song Zhiyun patted the chair by the bed, and Han Yan sat down obediently.
She touched Han Yan’s face, her expression one of heartache. “You are still on an intravenous drip. Why were you in such a hurry to see me? Why have you lost so much weight? Have you not been eating properly?”
Feeling her warmth, Han Yan opened his mouth, his voice thick with a nasal tone. “You have lost a lot of weight too, Mom.”
Song Zhiyun gently rubbed his hair and held his hand that was not attached to the needle. “Xiaoyan, no matter what, you will always be my son.”
Han Yan gave a red eyed “Mhm,” and she pinched his cheek helplessly. “How old are you, and you are still going to cry? Have you no shame?”
Han Yan sniffled and gave a natural snort. “I am your son anyway. It is not embarrassing to cry in front of my own mother.”
Song Zhiyun was amused and gave his face a few more firm rubs to satisfy her motherly urge. They chatted for a while before Song Zhiyun grew tired again. She had been in a coma for nearly a year; after waking up, her bodily functions had not yet recovered, and she still needed a lot of rest.
Han Yan flattened her bed and tucked her in. “Mom, get some rest. I will come to see you again tomorrow.”
“Fine, go on then. Your drip is almost finished; hurry and have someone remove the needle so the blood does not back up. Your fever just broke, so remember to eat something light. Or should I have the cook at Aunt Xie’s house boil some porridge for you?”
Han Yan listened patiently to every word of Song Zhiyun’s nagging. “No need to trouble Aunt Xie. I will find something to eat myself. Do not worry about it, Mom. Just go to sleep.”
As he picked up the bottle to leave, Song Zhiyun suddenly laughed and remarked, “Son, you really have grown up.”
Han Yan looked at her in confusion, and she waved him away meaningfully. “Go on. Tell your mother all about those romances of yours later.”
She emphasized the word “romances,” and Han Yan’s body instantly stiffened. He said sheepishly, “Mom, where did you hear that from?”
“I saw it with my own two eyes.”
Well, his Mother Song truly did have a sharp eye.
As soon as Han Yan stepped out of the ward, Adams met him and took the bottle from his hand. “Let us find someone to pull the needle first. I bought porridge downstairs. You should eat something light today; tell me what you want tomorrow, and I will make it for you.”
Han Yan glanced at him and spoke calmly, “Adams, did you investigate me?”
Adams bit his lip and remained silent. Han Yan felt a sense of “as expected.” Normally, he should have felt angry, as if he had been offended or monitored. However, after everything he had been through over the past two days, his heart had become unusually calm.
It would be a lie to say he was not moved. Although the other’s methods might have been extreme, Adams had indeed appeared when he was most helpless, staying by his side through the most difficult moment of his life. Those broad shoulders had completely shielded him like an airtight wall.
“Regardless, thank you for this time.” Han Yan curled the corner of his lip and gave a heartfelt thanks.
Adams had expected a fierce reaction like before; he had not expected a calm thank you, and for a moment, he was at a loss. Seeing such a tall man not knowing what to do with his hands or feet because of a single sentence, Han Yan felt a strange sense of joy and let out a very soft laugh.
When Song Zhiyun was first rushed into the emergency room, Han Yan’s father had been notified, but he did not show up. He finally arrived several days late, just as everyone was in the ward keeping Song Zhiyun company.
Xie Lan, who had long disliked the father, was the first to lose her patience. She rolled her eyes and said sarcastically, “Oh, so you finally decided to visit your wife? What? Did you finish negotiating that multi-billion dollar business deal?”
Han Yan sat by the bed, focused on peeling an orange for Song Zhiyun, without even looking at his father. Han Jue gave a perfunctory “Dad” before turning back to talk to Song Zhiyun.
Adams walked in carrying a lunch box. Seeing the tension in the room, he was unsure of the situation. Han Yan looked up and beckoned him over.
“Adams, come here.”
Adams gave an “Oh” and walked straight past the father, striding to Han Yan’s side and setting the lunch box on the table.
The way everyone clearly drew a line between themselves and him made the father’s face darken for a moment, but he quickly recovered. He said warmly, “Zhiyun, I was busy with work and only just found the time. Do you feel better? I found a nutritionist to help you recover. Are the two caregivers working out? If you do not like them, fire them, and we will find others.”
Song Zhiyun looked at him and sneered, “You came at the right time. The lawyer will be here shortly; we should discuss the divorce arrangements.”
Except for Xie Lan, everyone was stunned. “Mom, you,”
Before Han Yan could finish, Song Zhiyun pinched his face. “Do not worry, son. You are definitely coming with me.” She then turned her head to look at Han Jue and held his hand. “Xiaojue, you are also my son. I may not be as rich as your father, but I have enough to ensure you are taken care of for the rest of your life.”
Han Jue had not expected her to want to take him with her, and he froze for a moment.
“Divorce? I do not agree!” This outburst tore away the father’s mask. His face was gloomy as he spoke coldly.
Song Zhiyun had long expected this result. After all, divorce involved the division of assets, which directly affected his interests. Unless he was stripped of a layer of skin, he would likely not agree to a divorce easily.
“It does not matter if you do not agree! Zhiyun must get this divorce! You can stay with your broken company and grow old alone!” Xie Lan had been unable to stand this man since the beginning. When she knew Song Zhiyun was going to marry him, she advised her to break up eight hundred times a day. Now that her best friend had returned from the gates of hell with a clear head, she wished she could have her son bring a truckload of champagne to celebrate.
The lawyer arrived, and the younger generation was ushered out. Xie Lan, fearing her friend might be at a disadvantage, naturally stayed behind.
The ward door cut off the sounds from inside. The group stood in the hallway, looking at each other. Han Yan looked at Han Jue’s dazed expression and teased him with a raised eyebrow, “It looks like you really are going to be my younger brother now.”
However, after experiencing this ordeal over the past two days, his heart had become unusually calm.
