Chapter 42: Xia Shinan Wants to Escape…
Tang Yin rushed to the hospital room and immediately saw the unconscious elderly woman lying on the bed. Her gray hair was currently messy, her face was covered with an oxygen mask, and she was completely pale.
She lost her footing and fell to the ground, but fortunately, Ming Jing held her up.
“Tang Yin, Tang Yin!”
Tang Yin struggled to her feet and sat by the bedside, her lips trembling as she asked the landlady: “Auntie, how did my grandma…?”
The landlady was a kind-hearted woman who knew the grandmother and granddaughter relied on each other, so she usually paid extra attention to the elderly woman.
She recalled that last night, it seemed like people were talking in the house. The elderly woman’s tone wasn’t good, and there seemed to be an argument. At first, she thought Tang Yin had returned, and as an outsider, she didn’t want to disturb a family quarrel, thinking she would check later.
But when she went back, she found the door open, Tang Yin was nowhere in sight, and the elderly woman’s painful groans drifted out. She rushed in and found that the old woman had fallen in the kitchen.
“There might have been some oil on the kitchen floor, and she slipped accidentally,” the landlady sighed. “I quickly called an ambulance and kept trying to call you, but I couldn’t get through.”
Ming Jing, seeing Tang Yin utterly distraught, spoke for her: “She lost her phone and only got a replacement SIM card this morning.”
The landlady said, “Ai, that’s too much of a coincidence. An old person can’t take a fall. You take good care of her, ask the doctor about her condition, and let me know if you need any help!”
Tang Yin looked at her grandmother on the hospital bed and nodded like a robot. “Thank you, Auntie.”
Ming Jing was worried Tang Yin couldn’t handle it, so she stayed at the hospital to help her with the procedures and consulted with the doctor. The news wasn’t good.
“Your grandmother is old. Her last hospitalization was for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular issues. Now she’s fallen and has a fracture… In short, you must prepare for the worst.”
“What about surgery? The last surgery was successful, so this time…”
The doctor hesitated for a moment. “Surgery can be considered, but the risk is not small, after all, she is old. You need to think carefully.”
The doctor’s somber words lingered in her mind. Tang Yin knelt before the bed, crying silently, filled with even more remorse.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” Tang Yin choked out. “It’s my fault. I should have accompanied you whenever I had time. I should have cooked for you every day and stayed by your side, and you wouldn’t have fallen…”
She couldn’t believe what Grandma had gone through during those few hours she was at the police station.
Did it hurt? It must have hurt.
Grandma must have been calling out for her then, but she knew nothing.
Tang Yin took a few deep breaths, picked up her phone, and walked out. She made a call, and the other end took a while to connect.
“What is it?”
“Auntie Qi, Grandma had an accident… she needs money for surgery.” Tang Yin suppressed her emotions, begging the person word by word. “Can you help me one more time? I will pay you back all the money.”
The other end was silent for a moment. “How much do you need?”
“I don’t know, but… it might be a lot,” Tang Yin said frantically.
“I can,” the woman’s voice was still gentle. “Tang Yin, don’t rush. I can give you as much money as you need, but you should know my condition. The plan needs to be moved up. I need to see your attitude within a week.”
Tang Yin froze. “I…”
The woman smiled: “I know you are a kind child. I’m not in a hurry, Tang Yin. Call me back after you’ve thought it through.”
The call ended, and Tang Yin looked at her phone, suddenly plunging into a whirlpool of distress.
“You don’t necessarily have to find that auntie. I still have twenty or thirty thousand in savings. Let’s find Qian Yu again, and Xia Shinan… right, she’s your girlfriend, she will definitely help you!” Ming Jing, who had been listening quietly behind her on the phone, couldn’t help but rush forward and say.
Tang Yin closed her eyes and shook her head.
“Ming Jing, I already deceived Xia Shinan’s feelings. Do I have to deceive her money now too?” She didn’t want to abandon the last shred of dignity she had left in front of Xia Shinan.
Ming Jing asked, “Then let’s go ask the bank! We can get a loan!”
Tang Yin looked up at her, her face deathly pale, but a flicker of light crossed her eyes: “Is that possible?”
“Why not?” Ming Jing comforted her. “I always feel like that Auntie is strange and not right. It’s better not to find her for now. Only if there’s really no other way.”
Tang Yin nodded tearfully. Last time when Grandma had surgery for a cerebral hemorrhage, Qi Ning helped her a lot, and of course, she agreed to the corresponding conditions. This time was the same.
“Family member, the elderly woman is awake!” Walking back to the inpatient building, Tang Yin saw the nurse looking for her and immediately rushed toward the room.
The elderly woman opened her weary eyes and gave Tang Yin a faint smile.
“Grandma, where does it hurt? Tell me, the doctor will be here soon.” Tang Yin tightly held the elderly woman’s hand.
“It doesn’t hurt…” Tang Bixia spoke the two faint words. Seeing her granddaughter’s tears, she was powerless and could only move her fingers, wanting to comfort her.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be fine after the surgery.” Tang Yin smiled at her, completely unaware of how terrible her smile looked, her eyes already swollen from crying, and her face covered in tear stains.
“No…” Tang Bixia said slowly. “No… surgery.”
She knew the family’s situation and her own health condition very clearly. She also knew how much money the surgery would cost. At her age, she couldn’t burden her granddaughter anymore.
“Grandma! I asked the doctor, it’s not a big deal, you’ll be fine.”
Tang Bixia’s head slowly turned towards the window, where the sunlight was beautiful. She closed her eyes and sighed, “Yingying…”
“Grandma…” Tang Yin looked at the elderly woman nervously. “Tell me, I’m here.”
The elderly woman opened her eyes again and slowly said to Tang Yin, “I’m old, and that day will come sooner or later. Will you take Grandma back to the village? I want to go home and see.”
Tang Yin froze in place, tears pouring down in large drops. Facing the elderly woman’s plea, she couldn’t utter the word “no.”
After returning to the Xia family house, Xia Shinan was locked up.
The guest bedroom on the third floor was rarely occupied, and now she was locked upstairs.
Perhaps because of her last escape attempt, Xie Wan was worried that Xia Shinan, staying on the original second floor, would try to get out from the balcony.
Her phone was confiscated. Without electronic devices, the room contained nothing but a bed, a desk, and a television.
Three meals were delivered by Housekeeper Zhang. Xia Shinan looked at her, recalling Assistant Li’s mention that Housekeeper Zhang had been docked a lot of money last time for not keeping a proper watch over her.
Out of guilt, Xia Shinan didn’t dare to ask her for help again, only asking if Xie Wan could come up for a moment.
Xie Wan came upstairs to see her after she came home in the evening.
The red mark from the slap on her face hadn’t faded, and Xie Wan felt uneasy just looking at it.
It was all Xia Shinan’s fault for being so disobedient.
“Mom, how is my friend?” Xia Shinan asked anxiously.
Xie Wan looked at her daughter and said faintly, “She’s out, and she’s doing very well.”
“What about the Lin family…”
“I will naturally communicate with the Lin family and say it was a misunderstanding,” Xie Wan slowly sat down. “How about it, are you satisfied with the result?”
Xia Shinan sighed in relief. “Thank you, Mom.”
Xie Wan curled her lips. “Don’t thank me. This is the trade we agreed upon.”
Xia Shinan was stunned for a moment, then nodded.
Xie Wan agreed to persuade the Lin family not to trouble Tang Yin, on the condition that Xia Shinan first marry Lin Yu and register the marriage by the end of the month, and then go abroad.
“Mom, I want my phone to make a call,” Xia Shinan said. “They won’t be able to contact me and will be worried. Can I let them know I’m okay?”
“Is that so?” Xie Wan smiled. “Or… are you calling them to come and pick you up, to help you escape?”
“Of course not, I promise.” Xia Shinan gave a docile smile. “You can watch me while I make the call.”
The sound of a door opening came from downstairs. Housekeeper Zhang called out from below: “Madam, the Master is back.”
Xie Wan frowned with a hint of displeasure. She waved her hand, signaling Assistant Li to hand the phone to Xia Shinan, and then she went downstairs.
“Watch her. Five minutes to finish the call.”
Xia Shinan got the phone, and Assistant Li stood right beside her, clearly indicating the call had to be made in his presence.
She first called Tang Yin, but the phone was turned off and didn’t connect.
She sent Tang Yin a few WeChat messages, then called Qian Yu.
Qian Yu answered quite quickly.
“Shinan, are you okay! I went to your house to find you, and your mom drove me out.”
Xia Shinan chuckled softly. “I just got my phone… everything’s fine. What about Tang Yin? How is she?”
“She’s out. I heard your family sent a lawyer to help. It wasn’t a big deal.”
Xia Shinan sighed in relief. It seemed her mother hadn’t lied; Tang Yin was truly fine.
“But I just called her, and her phone is off, no one answered.”
Qian Yu said, “I can’t reach her either. Ming Jing said she’s too tired and resting at home. Don’t worry too much.”
“Mmm…” Xia Shinan glanced at Assistant Li, and remembering his help from last time, a surge of courage rose in her heart.
“Little Yu Mao, I have good news for you. I’m marrying Lin Yu at the end of the month.” She forced a smile and said this. After she finished, she noticed Assistant Li looking at her with great surprise.
Xia Shinan paused. “The date is set. We’ll get the marriage certificate at the end of the month and then have the wedding abroad. As my good friend, you have to be my bridesmaid… I won’t tell Tang Yin. I’m not close to her, so it wouldn’t be good to have her as a bridesmaid.”
“What bridesmaid? Shinan, are you kidding me?” Qian Yu sounded extremely surprised on the other end. “Are you… being forced by your mother?”
Xia Shinan continued speaking as if to herself: “Oh, and I might not be going to school for the next few days. Remember to submit the group PPT for the professional class on Wednesday night, or it will hold everyone up. The USB drive is in the nightstand in my bedroom. The room password… is the date of the physical fitness test.”
“What PPT? You’re thinking about homework when you’re in such a rush?”
Xia Shinan steadied herself and continued, “Did you forget? It’s the PPT about the Haicheng historical sites, the one we worked on together… Remember to submit it for me. Bye.”
She didn’t dare to say more and hung up the phone herself. After seeing that Tang Yin still hadn’t replied on WeChat, she turned off the phone and handed it to Assistant Li.
Assistant Li took the phone, looking hesitant. “You used such an important five minutes just to submit a piece of homework?”
Xia Shinan smiled. “I’m a student, how could homework not be important? Oh, and I haven’t thanked you yet for letting me off the car last time.”
Assistant Li looked awkward. Before he could say anything, Xia Shinan asked again, “There’s nothing about the call you need to tell my mom, right?”
The sound of smashing came from downstairs. Xie Wan and Xia Shentu were arguing again over the distribution of assets in their divorce.
Assistant Li nodded. “Madam is in a bad mood lately. You… try to appease her.”
After saying that, he deliberately closed the door, locked it, and went downstairs with the phone.
Xia Shinan watched the door close and quietly said, “Thank you.”
She walked around the room and finally went to the window. There was only a crescent moon in the night sky, faintly visible through the clouds. She hoped Little Yu Mao had understood her meaning, and she hoped Tang Yin would not be harmed by her any further.
At ten o’clock in the deep night, a motorcycle sped out of the villa area and arrived at the small house where Xia Shinan was currently staying.
Qian Yu entered the password, successfully opened the door, and then walked straight to the bedroom, to the nightstand Xia Shinan had mentioned.
She frantically searched. Forget the USB drive, there was nothing special, except for the bottom of the second layer, where Xia Shinan’s ID card and a bank card were tucked inside a professional textbook.
Qian Yu, clutching the ID card, finally understood.
She knew Xia Shinan wouldn’t casually ask her to get some USB drive.
There was no professional class on Wednesday night, no homework about Haicheng’s historical sites. Xia Shinan was mentioning these fabricated things, clearly hinting for her to help book a plane ticket to Haicheng for Wednesday night!
The ID card was there, and the bank card was there…
Xia Shinan was planning to escape!
Realizing this, Qian Yu immediately booked a plane ticket online. At the same time, she felt it was necessary to notify Tang Yin, but no matter how many times she called, the phone was still turned off. Ming Jing didn’t answer either.
“What is everyone doing!”
In the small alley, Tang Yin was packing her belongings into large bags and loading them into the car she had just rented.
Ming Jing helped her, but she was still a little worried.
“Are you really not going to treat her? Why don’t you discuss it with your grandma again…”
Tang Yin was deathly pale and shook her head.
She knew her grandmother too well. If Grandma said she wouldn’t have treatment, she truly didn’t want it. Even if she was forced to have surgery, Grandma would be in pain.
Grandma said she wanted to go home, to see if the little creek in front of the door had dried up, and to see if the little girl next door was now in junior high school.
She said she was afraid she wouldn’t come out if she went into the operating room.
Tang Yin nodded tearfully, agreeing. She knew in her heart that what Grandma feared more was becoming a burden to her.
The highway to their hometown had been completed long ago. It would take a maximum of three hours to drive back.
Now that the things were packed, they could go to the hospital to pick up Grandma when she woke up, and then drive back to their hometown overnight.
Ming Jing didn’t know what Tang Yin was thinking. Was she really not going to tell Qian Yu or tell Xia Shinan?
But in this situation, she didn’t dare to say a word without Tang Yin’s permission.
That’s why she hadn’t answered any of Qian Yu’s calls since leaving the hospital.
She couldn’t pretend everything was fine and tell Qian Yu that, nor could she tell Qian Yu that Tang Yin was in a terrible state right now.
Looking at Tang Yin, who was silent and holding on, Ming Jing didn’t know what to say to comfort her, so she just focused on her task. Once everything was packed, they could go to the hospital to pick up Grandma and drive back to their hometown overnight.
Just then, a couple living nearby walked past, glanced at their car, and muttered as they walked into the alley.
“Hey, is that a nice car? It looks pretty good, right?”
“It’s just an ordinary electric car, not worth much. The car parked here last night was the one that was impressive. Too bad you didn’t see it. A million-dollar Maybach!”
Tang Yin’s movements paused, her eyes fixed on the couple.
