After the Fake Heiress Died, She Was Filled with Regret - Chapter 41
Chapter 41: “I’m Scared.”
“Don’t panic. I’ve already called the lawyer uncle in my family to come and help. Let’s get Tang Yin out first, and deal with everything else later.”
Qian Yu and Xia Shinan were sitting in the taxi. Qian Yu was comforting her friend, but she was also feeling uneasy.
Xia Shinan’s face was pale, tears constantly welling up in her eyes. Looking at the night outside, even though it was brightly lit, she felt enveloped in darkness.
She released her tightly bitten lip, revealing a trace of blood, and whispered, “It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t gone to see Lin Yu that time, none of this would have happened.”
“How can you blame yourself! It’s Lin Yu who is terrible. If that bastard hadn’t shown up, nothing would have happened!” Qian Yu comforted Xia Shinan, “You absolutely must not blame yourself. This is entirely not your fault!”
Xia Shinan stared blankly out the window, not arguing with Qian Yu, but she knew very well in her heart that all these terrible things happening to Tang Yin were because of her.
Arriving at the police station, the two got out of the car and ran into Ming Jing waiting outside.
“What’s the situation?” Qian Yu quickly asked.
Ming Jing glanced at Xia Shinan, surprised that she had also come. She briefly explained what happened: “Tang Yin and I agreed that if she wasn’t out in ten minutes, I’d call the police. But I didn’t expect the police to arrive right as she was beating Lin Yu up…”
“Now Lin Yu is in the hospital… his mother is here. She looks difficult to deal with and brought a lawyer.” Ming Jing looked at them, “What should we do now?”
“I’ll go see.” Xia Shinan suddenly spoke up, “Mrs. Lin is usually quite kind to me. I’ll go beg for mercy.”
“No!” Qian Yu immediately pulled her back without a second thought. “How are you going to beg for mercy?”
Xia Shinan paused for two seconds: “Just say it was a misunderstanding, that Tang Yin hit Lin Yu because of me.”
“Because of you? Because of what? Because Lin Yu bullied you, or because of your relationship with Tang Yin?” Qian Yu said seriously: “Shinan, you can’t be foolish at a time like this! If Mrs. Lin finds out you’re with Tang Yin, the consequences will be even more severe! It will be even harder to deal with your mother!”
“Then what should I do?” Xia Shinan cried, asking Qian Yu, “Little Yu Mao, what should I do?”
“Don’t panic, don’t panic. Lin Yu has a lawyer, and so do we!” Qian Yu quickly found a tissue to wipe Xia Shinan’s tears, “Let’s not be impulsive. This is the first time something like this has happened. We need professional help.”
Ming Jing also nodded: “Little Yu Mao is right, don’t panic…”
Footsteps sounded behind them. Xia Shinan quickly turned around, thinking the lawyer Qian Yu mentioned had arrived, but unexpectedly, it was Assistant Li in a suit.
“Miss, the Madam is in the car. Please come with me.”
Xie Wan’s car was parked across the street. Xia Shinan followed Assistant Li, having prepared herself mentally, but still felt the low pressure upon entering the car.
Xie Wan was in the back seat. Xia Shinan met her gaze as she looked up and called out carefully: “Mom…”
“Slap!” An unexpected slap landed, leaving Xia Shinan stunned.
“Madam!” Assistant Li was shocked and couldn’t help but exclaim.
Xie Wan’s anger wasn’t relieved at all. She looked at her disappointing daughter and asked sternly:
“Lin Yu getting beaten, was that your doing?”
Xia Shinan covered her face and said quietly: “No.”
“What is your relationship with that girl?”
Xia Shinan paused before answering: “We are good friends. Lin Yu bullied me last time, and she helped me. Lin Yu held a grudge against her, which is why he’s harassing her now.”
Xie Wan finally relaxed after hearing her explanation, “I’ve been too lenient with you before. You’re moving back home from now on.”
Xia Shinan looked at Xie Wan and reached out to tug at her skirt hem, “Mom, she was retaliated against by Lin Yu because she helped me. Can you please save her?”
“Retaliated against by Lin Yu?” Xie Wan frowned at her daughter, “She beat Lin Yu and put him in the hospital. Who is retaliating against whom? Xia Shinan, you must completely distance yourself from this if anyone asks, do you understand? Otherwise, you’ll be finished, and the Xia family will be too!”
Xia Shinan shook her head, “No, I can’t.”
Xie Wan wanted to slap her again, but seeing her red and swollen face and determined eyes, she held back.
Xia Shinan looked at Xie Wan, gathering her courage: “Mom, if you don’t help her, I will tell Mrs. Lin that I told her to hit Lin Yu.”
“It will be hard to say if this marriage will still happen.”
Xie Wan looked disbelieving, “Are you threatening me?”
Xia Shinan forced a smile, an ugly one: “How could I be? Mom, I’m begging you…”
Xie Wan looked at her daughter for a long time, finally speaking as if in compromise: “Getting her out is not a problem, but you must promise me one thing.”
Tang Yin sat in the cramped interrogation room. The clock on the wall showed it was already midnight. She had lost contact with the outside world and didn’t know the situation of the others.
She buried her head in her arms, her mind a chaotic mess.
What was Xia Shinan doing? Would she worry about not being able to contact her? She wasn’t afraid of being locked up herself, but she was afraid of implicating others.
Suddenly, footsteps came from far away and grew closer. It was a man in a suit, wearing a kind smile, unlike the Lin family’s lawyer from earlier.
“Miss Tang? I am your lawyer. I will be handling everything from here on.”
It was already the next morning when Tang Yin walked out of the police station, clutching the lawyer’s business card.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Call me anytime if you need anything.”
“Tang Yin!”
Ming Jing spotted Tang Yin immediately and quickly opened the car door, urging her to get in.
Tang Yin pursed her lips and bid farewell to the lawyer before getting into the car. She was surprised to see Qian Yu in the back seat: “Why are you here? Xia Shinan knows?”
Qian Yu felt a little guilty, “I couldn’t help it. You were here. How could I hide it anymore?”
The stone hanging over her heart finally crashed to the bottom, forming a huge abyss. Tang Yin took a deep breath, “Where is she?”
Qian Yu: “She was taken away by her mother as soon as she got here last night. I haven’t been able to contact her all night. But don’t worry, it shouldn’t be a big problem!”
She looked at the lawyer outside the car and recalled the call from her father’s lawyer friend last night.
“Tang Yin already has a lawyer. I heard the Xia family hired him.”
“Shinan must have begged her family for help. So it looks like her mother didn’t give her too much trouble and even helped out.” Qian Yu looked at Tang Yin, “You haven’t rested all night. Go home and get some sleep. You don’t want Shinan to see you like this and worry. I’ll go home and find out what’s happening. Contact me if there’s any problem.”
Tang Yin nodded, then patted herself down, “I lost my phone. Contact Ming Jing if you need anything.”
“Okay.” Qian Yu was still worried, but at the moment she was more concerned about her friend, so she took a taxi home.
“Tang Yin, you were impulsive last night.” Now that it was just the two of them, Ming Jing looked at Tang Yin’s tired face and sighed. “We agreed you’d just get them out. Why did you have to hit him?”
Tang Yin glanced at Ming Jing. A hint of fierceness still flashed in her eyes when she thought about last night: “If I could go back to last night, I would still hit him. I’d even kill him.”
Ming Jing sighed, “Fine, I won’t lecture you. Should I take you back to rest now?”
Tang Yin shook her head, “First, let’s go to the nightclub from last night. I need to get my phone back.”
She had to contact Xia Shinan no matter what, or she wouldn’t feel at peace.
She was worried Xia Shinan might have agreed to some ridiculous conditions from Xie Wan for her sake.
If it went against Xia Shinan’s wishes, Tang Yin would rather have stayed in the police station.
The two arrived at the nightclub from the night before. The incident had been quite a scene, and everyone who saw Tang Yin knew she was one of the key figures from last night.
“Phone? Didn’t see it. There were too many people last night. Maybe someone took it.”
“Surveillance? The surveillance camera in the private room just happened to be broken…”
Tang Yin was helpless and could only rush to get a new SIM card, then borrow Ming Jing’s spare phone.
Ming Jing was worried about Tang Yin and decided to stay with her at home. But Tang Yin showed no signs of wanting to rest. She sat on the sofa, staring at the phone.
Qian Yu hadn’t sent any messages, and Xia Shinan was unreachable.
“Tang Yin, you have to rest.” Ming Jing was worried about her health. “Even if her family took her away, she has to return to school on Monday, right? You’ll see her eventually.”
Tang Yin looked at the newly logged-in WeChat, the chat history blank, and her heart felt equally empty.
“Ming Jing, you don’t know. Her family can make a student withdraw from school and go abroad the very next day. They can do the same to Xia Shinan.”
“I have a bad feeling. Like something terrible is going to happen.”
“I’m scared.”
Scared of never seeing her again, scared that last night’s rushed goodbye was their final meeting.
Ming Jing opened her mouth. She had never seen Tang Yin like this, so anxious and fragile.
She walked forward and gently patted Tang Yin’s shoulder, “Relax, it’s fine. The bad things are over. You care about Xia Shinan too much, that’s why you’re worried sick.”
Tang Yin lowered her eyes. After a long moment, “Yes, I care about her too much.”
Ming Jing smiled lightly, feigning ease, “I wonder who was just recently being stubborn with me, saying they didn’t like her.”
Tang Yin leaned against the sofa, murmuring, “I like her.”
Tang Yin finally fell asleep. A night’s worth of exhaustion pulled her into a heavy dream.
She found herself back in that tightly closed small room. It was completely silent; she could even hear the ticking of the clock on the wall.
She heard the sound of high heels, approaching step by step.
The door opened, and the person standing there was surprisingly Xia Shinan. She was wearing a white wedding dress, her hair pinned up, looking pure and beautiful.
She held a bouquet in her hand.
Xia Shinan smiled sweetly at her, “Tang Yin, I’m going to marry Lin Yu.”
“No…” She wanted to shout for Xia Shinan not to get married, but found she couldn’t make a sound, not a single word.
She ran towards Xia Shinan, but could never reach her.
Suddenly, Xia Shinan’s smiling face was stained with tears. Her clean white wedding dress was covered in blood, and a vortex appeared behind her. She didn’t know whose hands were grabbing Xia Shinan.
“Take me away… Tang Yin!”
Tang Yin rushed towards the vortex, but in the blink of an eye, she was plunged into darkness. The scene instantly shifted to a vintage coffee shop.
She looked around and found Xia Shinan.
Xia Shinan was wearing a coffee shop waitress’s uniform, busy with work. When she was serving coffee to a customer, she was accidentally pushed, and the coffee spilled all over.
“Hey! What’s wrong with you! You stained my clothes!”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I’ll pay you back…” Xia Shinan apologized profusely.
“Can you even afford it? You look so poor…” The customer rolled her eyes and left angrily, leaving Xia Shinan to look at her hand, burned by the coffee, and cry in distress.
And at a customer table not far away, was herself!
The other Tang Yin.
She was wearing a designer dress, drinking coffee and eating cake with Qian Yu. After seeing the scene unfold nearby, she coldly averted her gaze.
No… it shouldn’t be like this!
Even if she and Xia Shinan had swapped identities, she wouldn’t be so cold to Xia Shinan! She wouldn’t bear to let Xia Shinan live the poor life she once had.
“No!”
A loud exclamation made Tang Yin open her eyes. Ming Jing, sleeping beside the sofa, also woke up.
“What’s wrong?!” she asked groggily.
Tang Yin panted heavily. Only after realizing it was all a dream did she relax. She shook her head, saying she had a nightmare. Just then, she heard the phone vibrate.
Tang Yin immediately picked it up and saw an unknown number calling.
After connecting, the woman’s anxious voice came through the receiver: “Aiyo, I’ve been calling you all night, and you finally answered.”
Tang Yin recognized the slightly familiar voice, “Landlady Auntie?”
“Girl, where are you? Hurry back! Your grandma fell and is in the hospital!”
