After the Divorce, I Ended Up with My Ex-Husband’s "White Moonlight" [Transmigration] - Chapter 51
“Does Lu Mingze have an uncle?” Ning Qi suddenly remembered such a person from the book. He was a villain; after Lu Mingze’s father passed away, this uncle apparently spent his time trying to seize control of the company.
“Yes,” Qin Shi nodded, explaining to her, “After Lu Mingze’s parents died, the actual power of the Lu Corporation was split. A portion is in Lu Mingze’s hands, and the rest is held by his eldest uncle.”
It made sense. Old Master Lu had stepped back to the “second line” of leadership. With his younger son dead, the company fell into the hands of his eldest son and his eldest grandson. Whether in the original novel or the current reality, it was impossible for those two to coexist peacefully.
“Old Master Lu must have a massive headache over this,” Ning Qi remarked. Losing a child at his age was painful enough as it was.
“It is what it is,” Qin Shi said, sensing Ning Qi’s thoughts and choosing to be blunt. “Old Master Lu favors Lu Mingze as his grandson, but to him, the most important thing will always be the Lu Corporation.”
“So?”
“So, he wants to arrange a marriage for Lu Mingze,” Qin Shi said.
“I know that much,” Ning Qi added quickly. She had seen quite a bit in the original body’s diary. “Back when I visited the Lu family estate, he never really liked the look of me. He didn’t go out of his way to make life difficult, but he certainly looked down on me.”
By that logic, Old Master Lu definitely wouldn’t think much of Yun Shu, either. The original character had only managed to marry into the family because of the support of Lu Mingze’s mother. Now, it seemed the story of the male and female leads was following the original plot of the book.
“Then, Old Master Lu…” Ning Qi suddenly had a bad feeling. In the book, the “White Moonlight” actively wanted to marry the male lead, but now… “He wouldn’t happen to have his eye on you, would he? Is he trying to set you up with Lu Mingze?”
“More or less,” Qin Shi replied.
“What do you mean ‘more or less’!” Ning Qi was no longer calm. “You mean Lu Mingze just came over here to try and steal my girl?”
“Wait, that’s not right! Doesn’t he already have Yun Shu? If his grandfather wants him to go on a blind date, he just… goes? Doesn’t Yun Shu have a problem with that?” After her initial excitement, Ning Qi thought it through and sat back down.
“I didn’t go on a blind date with him,” Qin Shi confessed honestly. “I simply met with Old Master Lu once.”
“I know, I know,” Ning Qi said. She didn’t doubt Qin Shi; she was worried about Lu Mingze. Who knew what that guy was thinking now? She didn’t even know if he had given up on Qin Shi yet. Speaking of which, at this point in the plot, did Yun Shu even know that Lu Mingze only approached her in the first place because of Qin Shi?
“No,” Ning Qi sat down next to Qin Shi. “I’m telling you, Qin Shi, if you absolutely have to see him for some reason, you have to be careful.”
“Are you worried I’ll be scammed?” Qin Shi looked at the anxious girl with an amused expression.
“Of course! I’m worried he’ll try to seduce you,” Ning Qi blurted out.
“You underestimate your girlfriend way too much,” Qin Shi laughed, looking satisfied.
“Fine,” Ning Qi felt a bit conflicted again. “Maybe we shouldn’t have just shut Lu Mingze out like that just now.”
“What did you want to do?”
“Test the waters! Didn’t you say it was his grandfather’s idea? But now he’s shown up at the door personally…”
She wasn’t sure what his goal was. Could it be that he heard about her relationship with Qin Shi from Yun Shu and came to see for himself?
“Don’t worry about any of that,” Qin Shi clearly didn’t want her stressing over it. “I’ll handle everything.”
“Okay,” Ning Qi flopped onto the table listlessly and sighed. She didn’t have the power to solve it anyway.
“What’s wrong?” Qin Shi crouched down to her level and asked.
“I just feel so useless,” Ning Qi said dejectedly. “I feel like I can’t do anything to help.”
Qin Shi had arranged everything perfectly while Ning Qi spent her days tucked away like an ostrich. She had no idea how Qin Shi managed to deal with all those people at the office every day.
Lu Mingze’s grandfather wanted him to marry a woman of equal social standing, and he didn’t think Yun Shu was a fit. But what about Ning Qi and the Qin family? Setting aside whether the Qins wanted an “equal match” for Qin Shi, just the fact that she was a woman would be hard for the family to accept, wouldn’t it?
“What are you overthinking now?” Qin Shi tucked a stray lock of hair behind Ning Qi’s ear.
“I’m not overthinking,” Ning Qi brushed Qin Shi’s hand away and fixed her hair herself, whispering, “I was just wondering… will the person you marry in the future also have to be from a prominent family?”
“Are you regretting it?” Qin Shi asked.
“What?”
“I’m saying,” Qin Shi said, reminiscing about the past, “if the two of us had just gone straight to the Civil Affairs Bureau to register our marriage back then…”
“Well, that’s true!” Ning Qi lazily turned her head the other way. Given Qin Shi’s usual pace, they really would have been at the marriage registration stage by now. However… “Would you really register a marriage without telling your parents?”
“Wouldn’t your parents…” Ning Qi asked worriedly, “…give you a total beating?”
“Now you’re worried about me,” Qin Shi laughed. Just a moment ago she was fretting over herself, and now her thoughts had jumped to her partner.
“I’m not,” Ning Qi stood up. “I’m just speaking hypothetically. Just talk.” She wasn’t even ready for marriage yet! Why was she worrying about all these “what-ifs”? Wasn’t it better to just cherish the present?
“Ow.” As soon as Ning Qi stood still, she felt Qin Shi flick her nose. She immediately glared at her.
“That’s for not listening to me,” Qin Shi said. “Next time, I won’t be so gentle.”
“Listening to what?” Ning Qi rubbed her nose. It didn’t actually hurt; Qin Shi hadn’t used any force at all. It was more like a light graze.
“Is that the moving company?” A knock sounded at the door, and Ning Qi’s attention immediately shifted.
“Likely,” Qin Shi opened the door to a familiar face.
“Miss Qin,” the man who entered was middle-aged, tall, and very thin. Ning Qi momentarily felt like making him do manual labor was a form of mistreatment.
“And this must be Miss Ning?” the man smiled kindly. “Miss Qin mentioned you.”
“Qin Shi,” Ning Qi pulled her aside after the greetings and whispered, “Are you sure he can actually carry things?”
No sooner had the words left her mouth than the man hoisted the coffee table up with ease. He even glanced toward Ning Qi and gave her a friendly smile.
“Forget I said anything,” Ning Qi scratched her head and looked around.
“Let’s head out,” Qin Shi suggested. “We’ll only be in their way here.” It was true; the two of them had already packed what needed packing and given the necessary instructions.
“Miss Qin, Miss Ning,” the man overheard them and patted his chest. “Leave it all to me. I guarantee everything will be handled properly.”
“Alright, Uncle Zhang. We’ll leave it in your hands then,” Qin Shi said, taking Ning Qi’s hand and leading her out.
“Where are we going?” Ning Qi asked as she sat in the car and buckled her seatbelt.
“Is there anywhere you want to go?” Qin Shi slowly pulled the car out.
Since she wasn’t familiar with anything, Ning Qi was about to say “nowhere,” but then a thought struck her. “Qin Shi, how about we go see the new house?”
“Okay.”
“Why did we stop?” Ning Qi noticed there was no traffic and they weren’t in a residential area. Looking out the window, she understood.
“I know where your company is,” Ning Qi teased. “You underestimate me too much. The Qin Corporation is so famous, how could I not know where it is?”
Qin Shi remained silent, but upon hearing this, she turned the steering wheel again. The whole stop had lasted barely a minute.
At the entrance, a guard watched curiously as Qin Shi drove away again. “Xiao Li, I heard the ladies in the building saying Manager Qin took the day off today?”
“Seems so,” the young man named Xiao Li replied, standing ramrod straight. Only after checking that no one was watching did he add, “So why did she come by?”
“I think I saw someone else in the car. A woman.”
“Mrs. Qin?” Xiao Li guessed immediately.
“No, a young woman. She looked quite beautiful, someone I haven’t seen before.”
“Oh,” Xiao Li said neutrally, clearly not very interested.
Inside the car, Ning Qi was still on the subject. “Qin Shi, you really don’t trust your girlfriend enough. I’m always thinking about you. I definitely know your office location and your home address.”
“I suppose that’s not bad,” Qin Shi glanced at her while waiting at a red light.
“What do you mean ‘not bad’?” Ning Qi argued. “If I didn’t even know where my girlfriend worked, I’d be a total failure, wouldn’t I?”
“Then do you want to go take a look?”
Meeting Qin Shi’s gaze, Ning Qi had no doubt that if she said “yes,” Qin Shi would pull a U-turn and charge straight into the office.
“House first,” Ning Qi pointed to the road ahead. “Housing is a major priority. As for your workplace, I can visit some other time. There’s no rush.”
“No rush at all,” Ning Qi repeated.
“Alright then,” Qin Shi’s tone sounded slightly disappointed, though she didn’t push it. Ning Qi was right about one thing: it was better to get her “kidnapped” back home first.
“Qin Shi, is this the place you found?” Standing in the lobby, Ning Qi felt this building was several tiers above her old place.
“Let me ask a very realistic question,” Ning Qi stood on her tiptoes and whispered, “Is this a house I can afford to buy… or even afford to rent?”
She knew a bit about property prices, and this was the city center—prime real estate. It was very close to the Qin Corporation, maybe a twenty-minute drive. It was convenient for Qin Shi’s commute, but something felt slightly off.
“Let’s go up and see,” Qin Shi took her hand. The receptionist at the desk seemed to recognize Qin Shi and walked over with a bright smile.
“Um, Qin Shi,” Ning Qi nudged her arm, trying to pull her hand back. Just then, she heard the distinct sound of a camera shutter.
“It’s fine,” Qin Shi heard it too. She patted Ning Qi’s hand and looked toward a specific spot. Ning Qi followed her gaze and saw a girl who looked to be about twenty years old.
