- Chapter 50 - The Unwelcome Guest
“What do you mean, ‘you feel‘ like you love me more?” Qin Shi teased, clearly pleased but picking at the wording.
“Fine, fine, Miss Qin,” Ning Qi laughed, stepping aside. “It’s not a feeling. It’s… the direction of my heart.”
“What are you doing?” Qin Shi pulled her back.
“Packing! You—” Ning Qi was about to ask for help when she realized it wasn’t the weekend. “It’s 2:30 PM! Why aren’t you at work?”
“I don’t need to go today,” Qin Shi said calmly. “I finished my morning tasks, and if anything urgent happens, my assistant will message me.”
Ning Qi sat back down beside her. “Let’s be honest, Miss Qin. How were you so sure I’d agree to move? If I had said no, wouldn’t you have wasted the house-hunting and the time off?”
“You agreed,” Qin Shi said with absolute certainty, standing up. “Now, are you going to pack alone, or are we doing this together?”
The two began organizing. In the study, Ning Qi looked at the bookshelves and hesitated. She thought of the “original” Ning Qi’s notebooks. Should she tell Qin Shi the truth about her identity now, or wait? Qin Shi had never asked about her sudden personality change, but the secret felt heavy.
“What are you thinking about?” Qin Shi asked, noticing her staring at the books.
“Just thinking that I love these shelves,” Ning Qi lied easily, recovering her smile. “They were custom-made. Can we move them as they are?”
“The movers will be here soon. They’ll handle it,” Qin Shi assured her.
“You already called movers?” Ning Qi teased. “You really had this all planned out.”
“I wanted to make sure your things are handled with care,” Qin Shi promised. “Especially your piano. I’ll make sure there isn’t a single scratch.”
The Confrontation at the Door
A knock at the door interrupted them. Ning Qi, thinking it was the movers, hopped off her chair. “That was fast! I’ll get it.”
She opened the door, and her smile vanished. “Lu Mingze? What are you doing here?”
Lu Mingze didn’t answer. Instead, he peered past her into the apartment, his eyes searching the room. Ning Qi immediately went on the defensive. “If you’re looking for something to reclaim, you’re out of luck. What do you want?”
“Is Qin Shi here?” Lu Mingze asked, ignoring her hostility.
“Whether she is or isn’t has nothing to do with you,” Ning Qi snapped. “Don’t you have a girlfriend to tend to? You should learn some boundaries.”
“Ning Qi,” Lu Mingze frowned, “this used to be my property. Do I not even have the right to look at it?”
“Key word: used to,” Ning Qi corrected him. “Now, my name is on the deed. I am the owner, and since I didn’t invite you, you should stand aside.”
Lu Mingze stared at her, looking troubled. “How did you become like this? You used to only have eyes for me. Were you acting the whole time? You should have gone into show business; you would have made more money there.”
“At least I have self-awareness,” Ning Qi retorted coldly. “I know the Lu family has fallen so far that you think entertainment money is a step up. But whether I join the industry or not is none of your concern.”
She tried to slam the door, but Lu Mingze, being stronger, pushed back. Ning Qi wasn’t prepared for the force; she lost her balance and began to fall backward.
Before she hit the floor, someone caught her.
“Qin Shi!” “Qin Shi!”
Both Ning Qi and Lu Mingze shouted her name—one with relief, the other with pure shock.
Drawing the Line
“Lu Mingze, are you insane?” Ning Qi yelled once she was steady.
“I… I didn’t mean to,” Lu Mingze stammered. He truly hadn’t intended to hurt her; he had just pushed too hard in his haste to get inside.
Qin Shi didn’t look at him. She grabbed Ning Qi’s hand, inspecting it. Ning Qi had scraped her skin against the wall while trying to catch herself. “It’s just a scratch,” Ning Qi insisted. “Not even bleeding.”
Lu Mingze stood frozen. Even though Yun Shu had told him, he hadn’t believed it. It was too absurd. Qin Shi had never had a boyfriend, but a girlfriend? And his ex-wife?
“You… the two of you?” he managed to stutter, pointing at them.
“What about us?” Ning Qi challenged. She almost felt for him for a second—finding out your ex-wife is dating your former ‘White Moonlight’ is a lot to process—but his behavior today had erased her pity.
Qin Shi turned to Lu Mingze, her gaze icy. “President Lu’s home is next door. Don’t get lost again.”
“Qin Shi, I—”
“You have nothing to say, so I’ll say it,” Qin Shi interrupted. “I hope you don’t come back to bother my girlfriend again. You had no relationship with her in the past, and I won’t allow one in the future. For the sake of your grandfather, I’ll let this ‘accident’ slide. But if you hurt her again, I won’t be so easy to talk to.”
She slammed the door shut in his face.
Political Realities
Back in the study, Ning Qi looked worried. “Is it okay to treat him like that? You still have to do business together eventually, right?”
“I won’t be doing business with him,” Qin Shi said flatly.
“Don’t burn your bridges too early,” Ning Qi cautioned, remembering her own family’s business talk about ‘no permanent enemies, only permanent interests.’ “The Lu and Qin families have deep ties.”
“You’re overthinking it,” Qin Shi explained gently. “Lu Mingze doesn’t represent the entirety of the Lu Corporation. Old Master Lu has more than one son, and Lu Mingze isn’t the only heir in line anymore.”
Ning Qi was stunned. In the original book, Lu Mingze had total control. “Wait, he doesn’t have the whole company in his hands?”
“Not anymore,” Qin Shi said.
It seemed that by changing her own fate, Ning Qi had inadvertently caused a butterfly effect that was stripping the ‘Male Lead’ of his plot armor.
