- Chapter 24 - A Lifetime of Being a Couple
Shen Yuzong is from the Yong Kingdom, yet he never mentioned this to him. Qi Yan thought it over and realized that Shen Yuzong rarely spoke about his past. Aside from the nonsense Shen Yuzong usually spouted, Qi Yan knew nothing about him. Wrapped in layers of fog, Qi Yan grew increasingly curious about what Shen Yuzong was hiding from him.
“Customer, your pastries are ready! Call me if you need anything else!” The waiter placed the plates on the table before heading off to greet new guests.
The pastries were beautifully shaped and adorned with small flower patterns. Qi Yan was captivated, so he set aside his thoughts to try them. A yellow one, about three fingers wide, had a fragrant aroma. It was not too sweet, but the texture was dense. To summarize in two words, it was delicious.
Qi Yan tried every plate. Some were sour, and others were sweet. Every bite was good, but he soon felt sick of them. Qi Yan could not eat anymore. He glanced at Shen Yuzong beside him and suggested, “You eat some too. Otherwise, you will say I did not let you.”
Shen Yuzong curled his lips and picked up the date sugar cake that Qi Yan had touched the least. Zhuzhu was afraid of sour things. He really was a picky eater. He did not eat green vegetables, sour food, or anything too sweet.
Seeing that Shen Yuzong was eating, Qi Yan struck while the iron was hot. “Then you finish the rest.”
Shen Yuzong felt helpless looking at Qi Yan’s guilty expression. “Zhuzhu, we do not need to be so frugal. It is fine if we do not finish it. Your husband is not that poor.”
Qi Yan was exposed again and glared at him, pulling his hand away.
After finishing the pastries, Shen Yuzong tossed a pouch of money onto the table and led Qi Yan out. Before leaving, Qi Yan saw the money on the table and scolded Shen Yuzong for being a spendthrift, constantly throwing bags of money around.
Shen Yuzong thought to himself that it was not every day, as this was only their first time in the mortal world. He told Qi Yan they were not short of money. He did not lie. He had mansions, farmland, and property in the mortal world. Even without those, the Emperor had given him a large chest of priceless jewels before he joined the Chaotian Sect. Even with the currency changes over the generations, he could still exchange them at a pawnshop. Fortunately, the currency remained the same.
Qi Yan hummed and ignored him.
They wandered until they reached a hairpin stall.
“Young lady, look at this hairpin made of high-quality jade. Although it is gold-plated silver, who would be able to tell? Buying this is practical and beautiful.” The vendor saw the girl hesitating and continued to persuade her. “This hairpin suits you perfectly. You are not married yet, right? Wear this, and you will surely find a handsome young man.”
The girl blushed, picked it out again, and bought the gold-plated silver hairpin.
Qi Yan watched, stunned. Could it really work like that?
Shen Yuzong had a unique perspective. He looked at Qi Yan and said earnestly, “Zhuzhu, look. Others wish for a caring husband, yet you treat me this way every day. You are not satisfied even when you have one. It is true that what you cannot get is always the best.”
Qi Yan had learned to ignore Shen Yuzong’s complaints, as he would calm down on his own.
The vendor looked up and was amazed by Qi Yan. The capital had an open atmosphere, so men wearing flowers and earrings were not rare, but he had never seen someone as beautiful as Qi Yan, who looked like a person out of a painting. The vendor enthusiastically promoted his wares. “Young master, please stay. I have a batch of new goods today. They are pure gold and feature rubies from the Western Regions. I think they are perfect for you.”
Rubies? Qi Yan was not interested because Shen Yuzong had red ones, as well as blue, green, purple, and yellow ones. But seeing how enthusiastic the vendor was, he could not refuse.
Shen Yuzong saw Qi Yan’s hesitation and spoke first. “Just take out the most expensive jewelry you have. As long as my…”
Before he finished, Shen Yuzong received a deadly glare from Qi Yan. He changed his tone. “As long as my young master likes it, price is not an issue.”
Qi Yan was satisfied and turned to admire the jewelry. The vendor was overjoyed and squatted down to dig through the box. He took out seven or eight items, each in its own box. Qi Yan thought the vendor was exaggerating, but the hairpins were truly beautiful.
Qi Yan picked out one inlaid with a ruby, which was likely the one the vendor had recommended.
“Young master, you have a good eye! The butterfly on this is hammered from gold foil and carved by the best craftsman in the city. I waited two or three months just for this shipment!”
Qi Yan turned the hairpin, and the tassels jingled.
Shen Yuzong looked at Qi Yan gently and tossed a bag of money onto the stall. “These are gold leaves. Is it enough to buy these hairpins?”
The vendor was shocked. He had never seen anyone pay like that. Ten gold leaves were enough to buy a well-located house. He had seen wealthy young masters, but not this extravagant. Out of conscience, he reminded him, “Young master, you gave too much money. You do not need that much.”
Shen Yuzong took the hairpin from Qi Yan and focused on inserting it into Qi Yan’s hair. “A thousand gold cannot buy a beauty’s smile. Keep the rest as a tip.”
The vendor was speechless. He still did not understand the world of the wealthy.
“Please wrap up the rest for me,” Shen Yuzong said to the vendor.
Qi Yan touched the tassels hanging from his hair and asked Shen Yuzong, “Does it look good?”
“Of course. Anything you wear looks good.”
The vendor was speechless again.
“Two young masters, it is wrapped,” the vendor said, handing it to the masked Shen Yuzong. Shen Yuzong took it and held Qi Yan’s hand as they walked.
They had only walked two steps when the vendor called out to them. “Young master, wait a moment!”
Qi Yan turned and asked what was wrong.
The vendor smiled kindly and handed a small box to Qi Yan. Inside were two red strings, each with a small piece of Hetian jade in the middle.
“Since the young master paid so much, I feel I have nothing to give. These red strings were woven by my wife, and these are the last two left. I give them to you both.”
“I wish you a hundred years of harmony and a lifetime of being a couple.”
The vendor ran back to his stall without waiting for a reply.
Qi Yan and Shen Yuzong stared at each other, embarrassed. “How did he see through us?”
Shen Yuzong could not help but laugh. It would be strange if no one saw it.
Qi Yan was angrier at Shen Yuzong’s laughter and pushed him. “What are you laughing at?”
Shen Yuzong raised an eyebrow, pretending to be innocent. “Where did I laugh? This is just my nature. You want to blame me for that too?”
Qi Yan was sharp-tongued but soft-hearted. He pulled Shen Yuzong’s hand in front of him with a sullen face, took a red string from the box, put it on Shen Yuzong’s wrist, and tied it.
“Zhuzhu, why are you not wearing yours?” Shen Yuzong held Qi Yan’s hand.
Qi Yan had intended to wait until he went back at night to put it on secretly while Shen Yuzong was asleep, but now that Shen Yuzong pointed it out, he could not think of an excuse.
Shen Yuzong took advantage of the situation, fiddling with Qi Yan’s fingers, and whispered, “Are you waiting for your husband to put it on for you?”
“No! Stop being so narcissistic!”
Shen Yuzong nodded, pretending to be profound. He picked up the red string, tied it on Qi Yan, looked at it carefully, and let go. “Fine, it means your husband wanted to put it on for you himself.”
