- Chapter 17 - This Relationship Ends Here
Ji Yang did not listen and continued speaking to himself.
“That night, he broke into my room. I was sleeping, and by the time I woke up, he had already stripped off all my clothes. He was so strong; no matter how much I struggled, I could not break free.”
“Just when I was in despair, Yin Zheng saved me. It was probably at that moment that I began to develop different feelings for him.”
“I did not know if it was love, but from that day on, I started paying attention to his every move.”
“Yin Zheng ignored me as usual, as if that day was just a sudden act of kindness on his part.”
“For a while after that, Yin Xun stopped bothering me, but I was traumatized. I avoided him every day, and the first thing I did when I returned to my room was lock the door.”
“During that period, besides studying and avoiding Yin Xun, I spent my time secretly observing Yin Zheng.”
“But Yin Xun was only well-behaved for a few days. After that, he began to harass me frequently again, and I instinctively sought Yin Zheng’s protection.”
“Perhaps for Aunt Yan’s sake, Yin Zheng helped me every time, and I became more and more dependent on him.”
“But Yin Xun was furious. He already did not get along with Yin Zheng, and my actions made him feel even more inferior to him.”
“And so, a vicious cycle began. He bullied me, I went to Yin Zheng, and then he bullied me even more severely.”
“Later, Yin Zheng probably got tired of it. I do not know what method he used, but Yin Xun was sent abroad, and my suffering finally ended.”
“But I was not happy at all because my relationship with Yin Zheng returned to the way it was before.”
“I intentionally applied for the same university as him. I was afraid of him, yet I could not leave him.”
“You probably know the rest.”
He Ran’s emotions were complex, and his chest felt heavy. After a long silence, he exhaled deeply. “So, you only agreed to date me out of spite toward Yin Zheng?”
“…”
Ji Yang slowly turned his head to look at him with a complicated expression. He wanted to say something but ultimately only managed, “I suppose so. Although I knew in my heart he never liked me and only helped me for Aunt Yan’s sake, I just hated him for being so heartless, leaving me all alone and going to America.”
“Ha.”
He Ran suddenly wanted to laugh, and he did. He gripped the steering wheel and laughed until he could barely sit straight.
His car was still parked outside the bar. His laughter drifted through the window, causing passing pedestrians to peer inside curiously.
Ji Yang did not dare to speak and had no face to speak anyway; he buried his head deep in the crook of his arm.
He Ran slowly stopped laughing. “Ji Yang, we were together for five years. You had countless opportunities to tell me the truth, but you never said a word.”
Ji Yang bit his lower lip hard. “I did not dare. I really do love you, but by the time I realized it, it was too late. I was afraid to tell you the truth because I feared you would leave me. I thought we would keep going like this forever. I did not expect Yin Zheng to suddenly return.”
And once Yin Zheng returned, he was bound to find He Ran. Then, everything Ji Yang had done could no longer be hidden.
He Ran was speechless for a moment. After a while, he said, “Forget it. Where are you living now? I will take you home first.”
The drive was silent.
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped downstairs at Ji Yang’s apartment complex. He Ran did not turn off the engine and said, “Go on back.”
Ji Yang had been quiet the whole way. Now, he said softly, “Whether you believe it or not, I really do love you. Things have come to this, and I do not expect your forgiveness. I only hope that you do not hate me.”
“…”
Ji Yang wiped his face, took a deep breath, and exhaled heavily. “I am going now.”
He Ran watched his thin silhouette and suddenly spoke. “Do you know why Yin Zheng went to America back then?”
Ji Yang froze and turned back to look at him. “I do not know. He did not tell me.”
He Ran said, “At that time, his grandfather had an accident in America.”
After saying that, he stepped on the gas, and the car drove out of the complex. From the rearview mirror, he could still see Ji Yang’s figure standing there blankly.
Now that things had reached this point, right and wrong did not seem that important anymore. It seemed everyone had their reasons and their difficulties.
Ji Yang might have truly loved him, but that love was never pure from the start. And He Ran was not generous enough to act as if nothing had happened.
This relationship ends here.
As for why he told Ji Yang the truth, he could not quite explain it to himself.
The main road was empty in the early hours of the morning, with only a few scattered vehicles passing by. The bustling city had shed its daytime noise and heat, becoming quiet and hollow. It was just like his current mood, vast and empty.
He Ran drove very slowly. He did not want to go home, so he just wandered aimlessly. His phone had rung several times, but he did not want to answer, letting the calls end automatically.
But this time, the caller seemed particularly persistent, calling non-stop. After it rang about a dozen times, He Ran finally got annoyed and lost the mood to continue being emotional.
He picked up the phone and answered, his tone cold and heavy. “You had better have something important to say!”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by a low chuckle. The laughter was magnetic and pleasant, clearly belonging to a man.
The voice was both strange and somewhat familiar. He Ran paused and moved the phone to look at the screen. It was an unknown number. He frowned slightly, put it back to his ear, and asked, “Who is this?”
The man on the other end of the phone smiled and said, “What? You forgot me so quickly? That is truly heartbreaking.”
“Yin Zheng?”
“Mm-hmm.”
He Ran: “…”
That cloying tone, it was definitely him.
He Ran asked, “How did you get my number?”
The man replied, “I found it after a lot of hard work, of course.”
He Ran was not in the mood to argue about that and said directly, “Is something wrong? If not, I am hanging up.”
“Hey! Do not! I called because there is something.”
“Then say it.”
Yin Zheng laughed again and suddenly said something quite random. “Look at your rearview mirror.”
The topic changed too fast for He Ran to react. He instinctively followed the instruction and looked at the mirror. He did not see anything unusual; there was only a black sedan driving normally behind his car.
At that moment, the car behind him suddenly honked. Simultaneously, the sound of a horn rang out through the phone receiver.
He Ran snapped to his senses and immediately hit the brakes. The car behind him also slowed down and stopped.
The world went silent; neither of them spoke. He Ran stared intently at the rearview mirror, but the night was too thick. Even with the streetlights on both sides of the road, he could not see clearly who was sitting inside.
But it no longer mattered.
He Ran hung up the phone, drove to the side of the road, and parked. The car behind him followed suit, stopping by the curb.
He Ran unbuckled his seatbelt, opened the door, and got out. The door of the black sedan also opened, and a tall young man stepped out.
He wore a white casual suit and had shoulder-length hair. His face was elegant, and his temperament was otherworldly.
It really was him.
The man greeted him with a beaming smile. “Good evening, President He.”
He Ran: “Are you stalking me?”
In the time it took to speak those two sentences, Yin Zheng had already walked up to him. He smiled and said, “If I said no, would you believe me?”
He Ran asked back, “Do you believe that yourself?”
Yin Zheng shrugged and leaned casually against He Ran’s car with his hands in his pockets, a gentle smile always hanging on his lips.
“Fine, I was indeed following you, but I did not have any other intentions. I was just worried you might do something stupid in a moment of despair.”
He Ran: “You have watched too many TV dramas, have you not?”
Yin Zheng burst out laughing. “I am just teasing you. I know you would not.”
He Ran was speechless and asked him, “When did you start following me?”
Yin Zheng said, “It was not exactly stalking. I knew where you were going. After I left the banquet, I went directly to Ji Yang’s residence to wait for you.”
He Ran’s focus shifted elsewhere. “How did you know where Ji Yang lives?”
Yin Zheng laughed softly. “I have my ways, of course.”
He Ran: “So, you have been following me since I left his place?”
“Exactly.”
So, his behavior of driving around in circles like an idiot had been seen by this man?
He Ran was annoyed and said unpleasantly, “What do you mean by this? Are you afraid I will rekindle things with him and get in your way?”
