Chapter 13: The Wolf and the Whip-Wielder
◎ Such Indecency! ◎
Nameless’s mind raced: When did she wake up? Did she see me? How much did she see?
A multitude of responses flashed through her head, only to be dismissed one by one. Seeing that Jiao Qingyin was merely staring at her without speaking, Nameless remained perfectly still, deciding to wait and see how the situation unfolded.
Jiao Qingyin had been woken by a strange sound, like chalk screeching across a wet blackboard—a noise so jarring it sent her pleasant dream into a tailspin. In her dream, the soft white fluff-ball in her arms had suddenly transformed into a certain white-haired slave. A slave who had grown powerful and was preparing to lock her in a dark room.
The dream turning into a nightmare caused Jiao Qingyin to bolt awake. She quickly discovered the source of the noise was her own Al—the puppy had somehow fallen off the bed and was struggling to climb back up. Her claws scraping against the wooden bedframe produced the sound she had heard.
Jiao Qingyin felt a pang of guilt. Having never slept with another living creature before, she didn’t know if she was a restless sleeper. Could I have kicked Al off the bed? she wondered.
Seeing the puppy huddled in her hands, quiet and still with a stiff little tail, Jiao Qingyin worried she might have been scared witless. She sat up and nervously checked Nameless’s condition. “Are you hurt? Did the fall be painful?”
Realizing the puppy couldn’t talk, Jiao Qingyin meticulously felt Nameless over from head to toe to ensure no bones were broken. The movements were so swift that Nameless’s already rigid body felt like it had turned to stone; it took her a full cycle of being “petted” before she regained her senses enough to resist.
“Awoo!” Nameless squeezed a threatening low growl from her throat—but due to objective physical constraints, the tiny puppy voice sounded more like she was acting spoiled.
Seeing that the puppy had regained her energy and was no longer acting dazed, Jiao Qingyin relaxed and placed the struggling Nameless onto the duvet. She actually wanted to hold her a bit longer—after all, a white puppy was as soft and squishy as a glutinous rice ball—but seeing the “fur explode” in irritation, she reluctantly gave up the thought for now.
My Al really doesn’t like being touched or held, Jiao Qingyin thought regretfully.
Having never raised a dog and with no one around to give advice, Jiao Qingyin didn’t know how other dogs behaved toward their owners. She could only rely on her intuition to find the best way to interact with Al.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” Jiao Qingyin whispered.
Nameless had not yet cooled down from the fury of having her “entire body touched” when she met Jiao Qingyin’s gaze. For the first time, she saw an emotion in those eyes that could truly be described as “gentle.”
No, perhaps not the first time… Nameless recalled seeing something similar a few days ago. Due to her upbringing, Nameless was an expert at reading people and sensitive to changes. She knew that some aspects of a person’s nature couldn’t be faked with mere acting.
For instance… the old Otillia Hughes would occasionally feign kindness and concern, but the desire in her eyes was always impossible to hide. Every time Nameless saw that smile, she felt only disgust. She didn’t feel… her heart racing, like it was now.
At this moment, an absurd thought surfaced in Nameless’s mind: This person might not be the real Otillia Hughes.
But how was that possible? The royal bloodline was not to be trifled with. If someone had replaced Otillia, the court mages would surely have noticed the anomaly.
Nameless couldn’t fathom that Jiao Qingyin had a System to help her cheat, and Jiao Qingyin couldn’t fathom that her puppy was the protagonist of this world.
Jiao Qingyin let out a long stretch. As her head tilted back, she accidentally caught sight of the person curled up on the pile of pillows. The white-haired slave remained in exactly the same position as yesterday, huddled there motionless. The night had passed and the fireplace had long since gone out; there was no telling how long the girl had been freezing.
Jiao Qingyin guiltily checked the protagonist’s health bar. Fortunately, there was no major issue, but her remaining sleepiness vanished.
“Let’s get up early today…” Jiao Qingyin murmured. Since there was food in the room and she felt too lazy to call the butler and maids, she began to change her clothes herself. Since the “protagonist” wasn’t awake yet, she didn’t feel the need to maintain the original owner’s lifestyle.
Thus, while Nameless was deep in thought, a light piece of clothing fell toward her head, casting a shadow and threatening to cover her.
Nameless: “!”
She quickly extended a paw to swat the unknown object away. When she looked closely, she realized it was… Jiao Qingyin’s nightgown.
Nameless instinctively looked up and her vision was filled with a large expanse of fair, soft skin.
“!!!”
Her mind went blank. The tentative step she had just taken faltered; she lost her balance and went splat, rolling uncontrollably because the surface she was standing on was so soft.
Jiao Qingyin, halfway through undressing, saw Nameless take a tumble and laughed, helping her back up. “Be a good girl.”
Nameless saw the smooth arms, the slight pink at the joints, and… blood rushed to her brain, and she buried her head deep into the blankets.
S-Such indecency!
With nowhere to vent her internal heat, she could only strike a flurry of “combo punches” against the duvet in frustration. Jiao Qingyin, having changed into her daily undergarments, saw Nameless’s “destructive” behavior. She reflected for a second and decided she would take this high-energy creature out for a walk later. The Prince’s estate was large enough for Al to play however she liked.
Jiao Qingyin stayed in her room for most of the morning, only preparing to take Nameless out when the afternoon sun emerged. During this time, the person on the pillows never “woke up.” If the System hadn’t shown the protagonist’s status as normal, Jiao Qingyin might have physically shaken her.
Though Jiao Qingyin was obsessed with petting the dog and had almost forgotten the protagonist’s existence, she still untied the girl’s bonds, threw a blanket over her, left some food, and ordered the servants to stoke the fireplace higher before she left.
Nameless happened not to see this. As a pet with a human soul, she had just spent her time proving to Jiao Qingyin that she could use the bathroom independently and did not require assistance.
Once outside, Jiao Qingyin saw that Al was staying obediently by her heels without any sign of running off. She tucked away the leash she had prepared and handed it coldly to the accompanying knight.
“To the garden.” With outsiders present, her expression returned to the one Nameless knew best.
“Yes,” the knight replied, his gaze casually sweeping over the white puff-ball at the Princess’s feet.
…A white wolf cub. Though he didn’t know if it had Magic Beast blood, it was certainly the kind of pet the Princess would keep. White wolves were considered divine animals; legend said they could take human form under the moonlight. But they were notoriously fierce and impossible to tame, so the legends remained just that—unverified.
When the knight heard the butler say the Princess had a “dog,” he had found it hard to believe. Looking at it now, it was clear the butler was growing senile—unable to tell a dog from a wolf.
