Chapter 12: The Wolf and the Whip-Wielder
◎ Is Al smarter than average animals? ◎
Nameless was utterly mortified. She had overestimated her familiarity with this puppy body; otherwise, she wouldn’t have been unable to flip over and end up attracting Jiao Qingyin’s attention.
She had originally intended to wait for Jiao Qingyin to rest and then quietly approach the book on the desk. She hadn’t expected the woman to be so sharp; even the slightest movement was detected. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to wait until Jiao Qingyin was deep in sleep, but those pillows seemed to hide a secret—just lying on them made her drowsy, her eyelids growing heavier no matter how much she told herself to stay alert.
After weighing her options, Nameless had chosen to reach out and nudge the puppy body nearby just before she drifted off. She hadn’t expected that right after switching bodies, she’d feel the urge to sneeze, causing her to lurch backward and fall into a four-paws-up position—where she was completely stuck.
Hearing Jiao Qingyin’s light chuckle, Nameless… the entire dog felt so ashamed the tips of her ears were burning.
In the next second, she was picked up. The familiar sensation of being lifted triggered an immediate reflex; she jolted and snapped her teeth toward Jiao Qingyin’s hand.
Jiao Qingyin was quick, grabbing Nameless’s muzzle in one smooth motion.
Nameless: “…”
“Still biting?” Jiao Qingyin squeezed gently, sounding both annoyed and amused. “I wonder if they have rabies vaccines in this world…”
Rabies… what? Nameless didn’t understand the last two strange syllables, but she understood the first part—Jiao Qingyin was calling her a mad dog.
Nameless bared her teeth in fury.
Jiao Qingyin tapped the puppy’s forehead. “No baring teeth.”
Nameless was livid.
After battling the snarling and paw-waving puppy for a while, Jiao Qingyin breathed a sigh of relief when Nameless finally settled down (from exhaustion).
A bit more obedient at last… She hoisted the puppy higher, cradling her more securely, and walked toward the desk.
Jiao Qingyin’s hold wasn’t a standard way to carry a dog, but Nameless wasn’t a standard dog either. Though her belly felt a bit uncomfortable pressed against the woman’s arm, she didn’t struggle like other dogs would—she had no desire to fall from a height that was quite significant for a puppy.
Jiao Qingyin placed the puppy on the desk, searched for a moment, and pulled out the jerky the butler had sent with the milk that morning, holding it to Nameless’s mouth.
“Al, eat some meat.”
The aroma of the jerky was rich. With a canine’s sensitive sense of smell, Nameless discovered immediately that the nutrients in this meat were higher than anything she had ever eaten before.
She opened her mouth to take a bite—and snapped at thin air.
Jiao Qingyin shook the jerky she had retracted at the last second and held her other hand out in front of Nameless, saying with a grin: “Shake.”
Nameless: “…………”
She really wanted to bite someone again.
Biting Jiao Qingyin earlier had been an instinctive reaction, but with her logic returned, she knew she couldn’t show too much blatant aggression. She needed to play the role of a pet for a while to get what she wanted while the woman’s guard was down.
But even so, acting like a pet and shaking hands was not in her job description!
Nameless turned her head away, showing her absolute refusal to eat.
“Not eating?” Jiao Qingyin looked disappointed. “Is it because the elemental power in the Magic Beast meat is too high?”
At the words “Magic Beast meat,” Nameless’s head snapped back, her blue puppy eyes lighting up instantly.
Magic Beast meat was an indispensable aid for those aspiring to the path of a mage. The elemental power within could not only strengthen the body but also increase elemental affinity. It was said that high-quality Magic Beast meat—even a piece the size of a thumb—was worth more than gold.
Thus, the Nameless who had just refused to cooperate suddenly raised her paw and placed it in Jiao Qingyin’s palm: “Awoo.” Feed me.
Jiao Qingyin: “…”
Even knowing she was in a magical world, Jiao Qingyin felt a momentary daze. Why did it feel like Al understood everything she said? Was she smarter than she imagined?
Seeing Jiao Qingyin staring blankly, Nameless couldn’t resist patting the woman’s palm with her paw. Jiao Qingyin snapped out of it and instinctively handed over the jerky. Nameless immediately bit down, chewing happily.
The jerky was tough. As a young puppy, Nameless’s teeth weren’t sharp yet, meaning every bite required effort from her ears down to her tail. She buried her head in her meal, her white tail-tip twitching. As Jiao Qingyin watched, her eyes involuntarily curved into a smile.
She was discovering the joy of owning a dog!
Jiao Qingyin watched for a long time with her chin resting in her hand. When Nameless finished and started licking the crumbs from her muzzle, Jiao Qingyin reached out and scratched the puppy’s chin.
Nameless didn’t have time to dodge before she heard a smiling compliment from above: “Our Al is the cutest little puppy.”
Nameless’s movements paused unnaturally. She flicked her ears, pretending not to hear. She was actually starting to get used to Jiao Qingyin’s split personality between her public and private life.
“By the way, I haven’t heard you bark much. Al, give me a ‘woof,’ okay?”
Nameless: “…”
She pretended not to understand, but then Jiao Qingyin pulled out another piece of jerky, looking at her expectantly.
No, whether in public or private, this woman is equally malicious!
In the middle of the night, under a star-filled sky and bright moonlight, Nameless opened her eyes.
She was dazed for a good while, her paws instinctively kneading the soft surface beneath her. After a long time, she fully woke up in the warm, dark environment. Using the superior night vision of her animal body, she discovered… she was sleeping with her enemy.
At this very moment, her paw pads were pressed right against the face she hated most.
Nameless endured the urge. To avoid waking the woman, she didn’t press down hard. She remembered that a puppy’s body couldn’t handle too much elemental power; the excess needed to be processed during sleep. She must have passed out right after the two pieces of jerky, not knowing she had been brought into bed by Jiao Qingyin.
Nameless had never heard of anyone allowing a pet on the bed. She was momentarily stunned. Especially when that person was Otillia Hughes…
Glancing at the deep-sleeping Jiao Qingyin, Nameless’s gaze darkened. Wasting no more time, she jumped lightly off the bed—fell—and headed straight for the desk.
Next, she spent a great deal of effort and multiple attempts before finally using the crossbar of the chair to climb onto the desk. She successfully flipped open the Introduction to Basic Elemental Magic.
The title page read: “To Her Highness the Princess, may you…” Nameless didn’t recognize the incantation that followed, but guessed it was a blessing. The signature was “Filna Black.”
A family name… at least Knight class then. Nameless pressed her nose against the book and used both paws to turn the page.
In a world where culture was a monopoly, slaves and most commoners were illiterate. Fortunately, Nameless had been taught by an elder in her youth, otherwise, she wouldn’t even be able to read the script.
The book was entirely handwritten. The author seemed not to expect others to read it, omitting many explanations. It only briefly mentioned the entry points for learning elemental magic at the beginning, followed by records of common First and Second-Tier spells.
The incantations, required tools, and hand gestures for these spells varied, but Nameless could memorize and understand them after a single glance. To learn as much as possible before Jiao Qingyin woke up, she skimmed through the pages.
Throughout the process, the magical theories that others found obscure posed no challenge to her. For Nameless, the hardest part was actually turning the pages—furry puppy paws were not suited for the task.
Before she knew it, dawn was breaking. Seeing the sunlight gradually filtering through the curtains, Nameless hesitated for a moment, closed the unfinished book, and jumped off the desk.
Reluctant as she was, she ran back to the bed, intending to return to her original position undetected. However, while getting off the bed had been easy, climbing back up proved to be a massive challenge for her current body.
After three attempts and falling back just as she reached the edge, Nameless began to consider whether she should just pretend she had fallen off the bed in the middle of the night.
Just then, a hand reached out from the bed, cupped her bottom, and scooped her up.
Nameless froze, meeting Jiao Qingyin’s calm, emotionless eyes.
