Chapter 79: “As long as he wants, it can be me anytime.”
Shen Qingyu froze in place. It took him two or three seconds to realize he was being hugged by Lu Xiao, and inside the dorm, no less.
He quickly pushed against Lu Xiao, his hands pressed against Lu Xiao’s chest. Through the high-quality suit jacket, he felt Lu Xiao’s firm chest muscles.
“Let go of me quickly. Cheng Che is about to come out,” Shen Qingyu urged.
Lu Xiao chuckled, but held him tighter, his lips brushing Shen Qingyu’s earlobe as he lightly exhaled: “Are you saying that if he’s not here, I can hug you for as long as I want?”
Misinterpreted, Shen Qingyu was angry and embarrassed, saying sharply, “Try talking nonsense again, and I’ll ignore you.”
He knew how to deal with Lu Xiao: often, this sort of high-quality, most childish form of argument was the fastest way to make him surrender.
Sure enough, Lu Xiao “hmphed” in dissatisfaction and released him. Still feeling like he was losing out, he reached out and touched Shen Qingyu’s face a few times. Even this simple gesture was done with a strong, roguish flair.
Lu Xiao lowered his head and turned the gaming controller Shen Qingyu had given him over and over again. “I like this gift.”
His tone was direct and sincere, giving Shen Qingyu, the gift-giver, a great sense of achievement. There was nothing more satisfying than having a personally chosen gift appreciated!
Lu Xiao then put the gift down, casually leaned against Shen Qingyu’s wardrobe, his body slightly tilted, his posture relaxed and casual. Just standing there, he exuded a sense of being difficult to mess with.
“Am I handsome?” Lu Xiao suddenly asked.
Shen Qingyu blinked blankly. Logic told him he should be reserved; his praise would only make Lu Xiao push his luck further. But his emotions told him to be honest. In the end, reason lost to emotion, and he nodded seriously, saying, “Very handsome.”
It was “very handsome,” not just “handsome.”
Lu Xiao felt a surge of secret delight. He was the type of person who couldn’t hide his feelings. Even though he tried hard to control his expression, Shen Qingyu could instantly tell he was very pleased with himself.
In terms of both looks and temperament, Lu Xiao was the type most gay men would find attractive, and Shen Qingyu was no exception. He was tall and handsome, every move radiating a hard-to-tame wildness. Yet, this person rushed back specifically to receive his birthday wishes and gift before midnight…
It was hard for Shen Qingyu not to be moved.
But his emotion didn’t last long, as Cheng Che finished his shower and walked out of the bathroom. He saw Shen Qingyu and Lu Xiao alone, and his expression soured. Although he didn’t say anything, his first action was to step in front of Shen Qingyu, shielding him behind himself.
Cheng Che eyed Lu Xiao, who was wearing a suit, mentally cursing him as a “poser.” Their eyes clashed fiercely, and the air seemed to crackle with static electricity.
Cheng Che quickly turned around, bent slightly, and looked into Shen Qingyu’s eyes, saying, “I’ll dry your hair for you.”
Shen Qingyu nodded, using his fingertip to flick away the water droplets at his hair ends. “Your hair is wet too.”
“Mhm. Then you can dry mine later.” Cheng Che put his arm around Shen Qingyu’s shoulder, guiding him toward the bathroom, and made sure to close the door, blocking Lu Xiao out.
This action irritated Lu Xiao, and he couldn’t help but suspect they were going to do something naughty in the bathroom.
Even if Cheng Che was Shen Qingyu’s boyfriend, he wouldn’t allow him to do anything to Shen Qingyu!
Lu Xiao took off his suit jacket. His white shirt was neatly tucked into his pants. He still had garters on his legs, which were uncomfortable. Suppressing his discomfort, he walked to the bathroom door and rudely pulled it open without knocking. Seeing that Cheng Che was genuinely just helping Shen Qingyu blow-dry his hair, he relaxed.
Cheng Che glared at him, asking over the roar of the hairdryer, “Lu Xiao, what is your intention?”
Lu Xiao leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed, and said flippantly, “No intention. I just want to talk to you guys.”
Shen Qingyu’s hair was flying in the air. He tilted his head slightly. “What do you want to talk about?”
The hairdryer was of poor quality and noisy. Shen Qingyu raised his voice, afraid Lu Xiao couldn’t hear him.
Lu Xiao said, “Anything.”
Cheng Che suppressed the anger churning in his chest but deliberately softened the movements of his hand. He said, “Stop trying to make conversation when you have nothing to say.”
“What’s wrong? You’re allowed to talk to Shen Qingyu, but I’m not?” Lu Xiao pouted. “We’re roommates. You don’t need to exclude me like this, do you?”
Cheng Che was left speechless. The thought that he not only had to guard against Lu Xiao but also had Song Yu lurking in the shadows made him even more frustrated. He desperately wanted to hide Shen Qingyu away.
Shen Qingyu didn’t want them to start arguing and quickly found a topic: “Lu Xiao, where were you tonight? Why did you come back so late?”
At the mention of this, Lu Xiao’s expression soured: “My dad insisted on throwing a birthday party for me. He dragged me into talking and drinking with a bunch of old men. Thankfully, I slipped away quickly, or I wouldn’t have made it back.”
Shen Qingyu said, “Oh.”
Lu Xiao didn’t need a response from him and continued talking happily on his own. “Some old guy insisted on introducing his daughter to me.” He paused here, deliberately watching Shen Qingyu’s expression in the mirror. He saw a flash of bewilderment on his face, then showed a satisfied smile.
Cheng Che immediately became alert. He felt Lu Xiao was trying to gain Shen Qingyu’s attention. Just as he was about to interrupt, he heard Lu Xiao’s shocking statement:
“Then I told him I already had someone I liked.”
Lu Xiao’s gaze bypassed Cheng Che and locked onto Shen Qingyu. The look was focused and deeply affectionate. Anyone could see his infatuation.
Cheng Che clenched his jaw, a vein pulsing on his forehead. He turned off the hairdryer, wrapped his arms around Shen Qingyu from behind, and looked at the embracing pair in the mirror, his eyes pointedly looking at Lu Xiao, as if flaunting his rightful status as boyfriend.
The air solidified for a moment. Shen Qingyu patted Cheng Che’s hand. “Let me dry your hair.”
Dissatisfied that his declaration of love was ignored, Lu Xiao stiffly inserted himself into the conversation: “If it were me, I wouldn’t bear to let Shen Qingyu do anything for me.”
Cheng Che sneered, “Too bad it’s not you.”
“As long as he wants, it can be me anytime,” Lu Xiao countered without hesitation.
“I won’t give you that chance.”
“I…”
Shen Qingyu looked utterly resigned. He rubbed his hair and said, “Lu Xiao, do you want to shower? You go in first. Cheng Che, let’s go out to dry.”
Only after successfully separating the two did Shen Qingyu feel peace return to the world.
…
On New Year’s Day, it snowed in Wen Cheng. Shen Qingyu woke up to a white landscape outside the window.
He loved the snow and stood by the window in his thin pajamas for a long time, admiring the view.
The dorm door was suddenly pushed open. Shen Qingyu turned and saw Song Yu walk in, bundled in a black down jacket and carrying a gust of cold air. His glasses were fogged up, indicating the large temperature difference between indoors and outdoors.
In such cold, snowy weather, he had to rush from home to school. The library was closed today, so he could only study in the academic building, but the heating and air conditioning there were practically useless. Shen Qingyu had almost caught a cold in the academic building before.
Shen Qingyu’s heart was overflowing with concern. He bit his lip until it was pale, his voice muffled: “Why did you come back?”
Song Yu explained, “I just came back to get something. Nothing else.”
He seemed afraid of being misunderstood by Shen Qingyu, his posture cautious.
Shen Qingyu looked at his hands, which were red from the cold, and felt a pang of sadness. “Is it cold outside?”
The word “cold” reached his lips but he couldn’t bring himself to say it. Song Yu smiled faintly and said, “Not very cold, but if you go out, you should wear more.”
Shen Qingyu nodded.
Song Yu stood by his desk, rummaging for a while. Shen Qingyu continued to gaze out the window. Snowflakes fluttered down. Footprints on the snow were quickly covered. A chill seeped in through the window crack, and Shen Qingyu shivered.
The next second, a fuzzy blanket was draped over him.
“Be careful not to catch a cold,” Song Yu’s caring voice sounded.
He only lingered behind Shen Qingyu for a moment before turning and leaving the dorm.
Shen Qingyu touched the soft blanket, feeling utterly bewildered.
Soon after, Cheng Che woke up. He saw Shen Qingyu wrapped in a blanket by the window, sat up, and quietly asked, “Why are you up so early?”
“It snowed,” Shen Qingyu told him, pointing at the view outside.
Cheng Che was slightly startled. He quickly got out of bed and noticed the blanket on Shen Qingyu was unfamiliar, but he didn’t think much of it. He stood beside him, looking out the window: “The snow is heavy. Are you still going to study?”
Before Song Yu came in, Shen Qingyu was thinking it might be better to rest for the day because of the snow. He didn’t want to freeze in the classroom. But for some reason, after Song Yu left, he suddenly wanted to go and experience the temperature of the academic building.
“Let’s go to the academic building. Wear more clothes,” Shen Qingyu said.
“Okay,” Cheng Che agreed.
After a quick wash-up, Shen Qingyu pulled the curtains tightly before leaving, blocking out every ray of light. Lu Xiao, on the first bunk, was fast asleep. His obviously expensive suit was crumpled and casually thrown onto a chair, looking very messy. Shen Qingyu smiled helplessly.
The snow had just stopped when they left. It wasn’t as cold outside as Shen Qingyu had imagined. The wind wasn’t strong, but Cheng Che still persuaded him to wear an extra layer. A soft scarf wrapped around his neck and chin. The white scenery was a little hard on his eyes.
Shen Qingyu quickly rubbed his eyes with his hand, then pulled his hand back, like an agile small animal.
Cheng Che chuckled indulgently, supporting his arm. “Be careful on the stairs. Don’t fall.”
“I know, I know. These shoes are anti-slip. How could I—” Before he could finish his sentence, his foot slipped, and his body abruptly lost balance.
Fortunately, Cheng Che immediately steadied him, preventing Shen Qingyu from falling disastrously onto the snowy ground.
Once steady, Shen Qingyu took a deep breath. The icy air rushed through his body, barely suppressing his wildly pounding heart.
“You scared me to death!” Shen Qingyu complained.
“Who was it who just said these shoes were anti-slip and they wouldn’t fall?” Cheng Che teased.
Shen Qingyu cleared his throat uncomfortably, playing dumb: “Who said that? It certainly wasn’t me!”
