Chapter 78: “Don’t tempt me.”
Shen Qingyu chose not to interrupt them and quietly left. He thought for a long time and decided to give Song Yu a chance.
At midnight, Shen Qingyu opened his chat with Song Yu and bit his lip before sending him an emoji. It was so late that Song Yu might be asleep, and he preferred it if he was. This way, he could send everything he wanted to say in one go. He had never been so nervous texting anyone before.
Unexpectedly, Song Yu replied instantly, as if he had been waiting for his message.
Shen Qingyu nervously sent him a message:
[Shen Qingyu: Why did you say those things to Cheng Che?]
The “Typing…” notification at the top flashed repeatedly, like a long psychological tug-of-war. Shen Qingyu’s initial pounding heart gradually calmed down. He wanted to see what kind of explanation Song Yu would offer.
[Song Yu: You heard it, didn’t you?]
Shen Qingyu was curious. [Why wouldn’t Cheng Che have told me?]
[Song Yu: I know he wouldn’t tell you. He’s been protecting you.]
Shen Qingyu paused, taking a deep breath.
[Shen Qingyu: Are you truly aware of your mistakes?]
He thought that if Song Yu was genuinely willing to change, he might be able to give him that chance.
[Song Yu: Yes.]
[Shen Qingyu: Okay, then I believe you. You are not allowed to have those kinds of thoughts about me anymore.]
This time, Song Yu didn’t reply immediately. He seemed to be contemplating for a long time on the other end.
Shen Qingyu was starting to get sleepy while waiting. To keep himself awake, he stretched out an arm to reach for the ceiling but only ended up hitting his own bed curtain with the back-and-forth motion.
With a “ding,” a message popped up. He focused his eyes on it.
[Song Yu: I can’t do that.]
[Song Yu: That’s no different from forcing me to die.]
Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but let out a soft “Ha,” but realized it was the middle of the night and the other two were asleep. He had to suppress his anger, grit his teeth, and furiously type on his phone. However, before he could send it, he was shocked by Song Yu’s next words.
[Song Yu: I won’t send you those messages anymore. Can’t I just think about you in my mind?]
A fire surged up from his chest, flushing Shen Qingyu’s cheeks crimson. He deleted the long string of text he had just typed, saying with a mix of shame and anger: [I already have a boyfriend?!]
The implication was—why are you mentally obsessing over someone who has a boyfriend?!
Song Yu, however, was incredibly frank—frank to the point of being shameless. Shen Qingyu felt this shamelessness could rival Lu Xiao’s.
[Song Yu: It’s okay, I don’t mind.]
[Song Yu: Whether you have a boyfriend or not, it doesn’t prevent me from loving you.]
Shen Qingyu was speechless. He didn’t reply to Song Yu, instead turning off his phone and closing his eyes, wishing it had all just been a dream.
The next morning, looking at the double portion of breakfast on the desk, Shen Qingyu recalled their conversation last night, his ears burning. He avoided Cheng Che’s gaze and quickly typed a message.
He sent this message away from Cheng Che, feeling a little guilty, as if he were sneaking around.
[Shen Qingyu: Stop buying breakfast for Cheng Che and me!!!]
Song Yu on the other side glanced at his phone screen and unlocked it naturally—Shen Qingyu noticed his wallpaper hadn’t been changed.
[Shen Qingyu: Change your phone wallpaper, too! Don’t let Cheng Che see it!!!]
Why does this feel like they’re having an affair?
This fleeting thought scared Shen Qingyu quite a bit. He secretly glanced at Cheng Che’s focused studying profile, and his heart settled a little.
Soon, Song Yu’s reply popped up, which almost made Shen Qingyu cough up blood in anger.
[Song Yu: Then, can I buy lunch?]
[Song Yu: But I really like this photo. Can I not change it?]
[Song Yu: I’ll hide it. I won’t let your boyfriend see it.]
Shen Qingyu felt a lump in his throat. He really wanted to take Song Yu’s head apart and see what was inside. With Song Yu’s intelligence, capable of achieving the top score in his major, Shen Qingyu didn’t believe he genuinely didn’t understand his meaning. That left only one possibility.
He was playing dumb.
So annoying! Shen Qingyu cursed him in his mind, but he wasn’t one to use vulgar language. After repeatedly rolling those few words over in his head, he realized they had zero killing power.
[Shen Qingyu: NO!]
[Shen Qingyu: NO!!]
[Shen Qingyu: NO!!!]
Song Yu sadly lowered his eyelids, his gaze sweeping over Shen Qingyu with a hint of resentment, as if Shen Qingyu had done something heinous.
Telling himself not to be fooled by his expression, Shen Qingyu gripped his pen and started memorizing vocabulary.
One second, two seconds.
The gaze fixed on him showed no sign of moving. Shen Qingyu had to look up and give a threatening expression, completely unaware that his supposedly “fierce and deterrent” look was seen by Song Yu as no different from a kitten baring its teeth.
Song Yu smiled, tapping the screen twice with his slender finger. A cute cartoon emoji appeared.
[Song Yu: It’s a secret.]
[Song Yu: Then I’ll just keep the current wallpaper.]
[Song Yu: Won’t delete it. Not ugly. Very cute.]
To be fair, he was truly a master manipulator of the human heart. Compared to this new photo, Shen Qingyu actually felt the previous one wasn’t so bad. After all, his face wasn’t showing in the previous one; as long as he didn’t admit it, no one could be sure the person in the photo was Shen Qingyu.
“Tired of studying?” Cheng Che’s voice sounded by his ear.
Shen Qingyu turned his head, met his clear gaze, and subconsciously pressed his phone screen off. He smiled and nodded gently, acting as if nothing had happened: “A little tired, yes.”
Cheng Che leaned close to his ear and whispered, “Then let me take you for a walk downstairs.”
“Okay.”
They left the study room one after the other, leaving Song Yu alone. His expression was flat, betraying no emotion. He tapped the desk with his fingers, then let out a satisfied smile.
He had always been patient and was not in a hurry. At least for now, he had gotten what he wanted.
…
The last day of December was Lu Xiao’s birthday. Shen Qingyu had prepared a gaming controller as a gift for him.
Before buying the gift, he had asked for Cheng Che’s opinion. After all, his boyfriend was the most important person, and he didn’t want him to harbor any resentment.
Cheng Che just stroked his head, pecked him lightly on the lips, and said, “I was a little jealous, but after you told me, I’m not anymore. It’s just a gift for a friend. I understand.”
Shen Qingyu smiled and stood on his toes to kiss him on the chin: “Yes, you’re right.”
On his birthday, Lu Xiao was not at school all day. Shen Qingyu thought he had gone out to celebrate and found it a bit strange. After all, starting a week before his birthday, he had been constantly appearing in front of Shen Qingyu, repeatedly mentioning that it was his birthday, as if afraid Shen Qingyu’s memory was poor and he would forget.
But when the day actually arrived, he was nowhere to be found.
Lu Xiao finally showed up, dressed in a sharp suit, ten minutes before the dorm curfew.
Normally, his fashion was unconventional and carefree. No one had ever seen him in such formal attire. He attracted a lot of attention on the way. Many students who were on good terms with Lu Xiao tried to talk to him, but he ignored them all, rushing straight back to the dorm.
When he pushed the door open, Shen Qingyu had just finished showering. His hair was damp, a towel was draped around his neck, and water droplets slid down his cheeks, extending into the collar of his pajamas. Under the light, Shen Qingyu’s skin was so white it almost glowed.
Lu Xiao tugged off his tie and casually pulled open a few buttons on his shirt. Only then did he feel somewhat relieved. He approached Shen Qingyu step by step, his thin-soled leather shoes making a crisp sound on the floor.
His expression was somewhat serious, his eyebrows furrowed. He stopped right in front of Shen Qingyu.
Just as Shen Qingyu was feeling utterly confused, Lu Xiao suddenly held out his palm, raised an eyebrow, and said, “Where’s my gift?”
He was wrapped in the cold outside air, which diffused into the dorm. His expression, a look that said, “If you dare to forget my gift, I’ll punish you severely,” made Shen Qingyu realize he had rushed back just before curfew to demand his present.
Shen Qingyu froze. His shower had been long, and the heat had left his eyes and cheeks slightly flushed.
Before he could react, Lu Xiao picked up the towel, vigorously rubbed his head twice, and said, “Don’t tempt me.”
Shen Qingyu: “?” Is he crazy?!
Forget it, don’t argue with a lunatic.
Shen Qingyu endured it, letting the towel stay draped over his head, obstructing his view. He slowly moved to his desk and retrieved the gaming controller.
“Here,” Shen Qingyu nudged his thigh, feeling the taut muscle. “For you. Happy Birthday.”
Lu Xiao forcefully pulled him up, lifted the obstructive towel, and saw his own reflection in Shen Qingyu’s eyes, which had contracted sharply in surprise. He couldn’t resist. He wrapped one arm around his slender waist, rested his head in the crook of his neck, and let out a long sigh:
“Good thing I made it back before the day ended.”
