Chapter 57: “You can do anything you want to me, I don’t…”
Shen Qingyu followed Cheng Che back to the dorm and was slightly stunned when he saw him take out his guitar.
“What are you doing?” Shen Qingyu asked curiously.
Cheng Che smiled, looking at him with a doting gaze: “Did you forget? I promised to play the guitar for you before. I learned two songs over the summer break, and today is a special occasion, so I can play them for you.”
Cheng Che was always like this. Whether Shen Qingyu said something seriously or just casually, he would take it to heart and prepare thoroughly in advance. It was impossible not to be touched. Shen Qingyu was moved by his sincerity every time, and his heart felt a warm, fine thread of comfort.
“Let’s go.”
Shen Qingyu quickly followed his steps. “Where are we going?”
“How about the sports field?”
Almost every night, students at Wen University played guitar and sang on the field. Shen Qingyu remembered seeing a Wen University senior on a video platform with hundreds of thousands of followers, who had accumulated fans by live-streaming singing on campus.
“Will there be too many people?” Shen Qingyu was a little worried.
“It’s okay. My friend has a speaker, and he’s at the East District field today.”
The East District field was a bit far from their current location. It was the largest field at Wen University, adjacent to the library and the gymnasium. As they passed the small path leading to the library, they glanced at each other, as if silently asking for each other’s opinion.
Shen Qingyu blinked, pursed his lips, and gave a reserved smile.
Cheng Che instantly understood what he meant. He proactively took his hand and headed toward the small path. Cheng Che’s hand was a size larger than his, easily enveloping Shen Qingyu’s palm.
It wasn’t Shen Qingyu’s first time walking on this path, but it was his first time feeling so nervous.
The flickering streetlights seemed to set the mood for this new couple. In this environment, it felt wrong not to say or do something to match the atmosphere.
The feeling of holding hands with Cheng Che was wonderful; Shen Qingyu felt very secure.
The air was quiet, but Shen Qingyu didn’t feel awkward at all. He even enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere. He and Cheng Che intertwined their fingers, and a feeling of happiness welled up spontaneously.
They were almost at the end of the path. Cheng Che felt he couldn’t keep delaying. He suddenly stopped walking. Shen Qingyu looked at him in surprise: “What’s wrong?”
In the dim environment, Cheng Che couldn’t clearly see Shen Qingyu’s features, but Shen Qingyu’s eyes were deeply imprinted in his mind. He could imagine the expression on Shen Qingyu’s face right now.
“Do you… want to?”
Shen Qingyu could understand his unfinished thought, but he hadn’t expected Cheng Che to be thinking about this after all that hesitation. So he chose to play dumb to tease him, “Want what?”
Cheng Che said, “You can do anything you want to me, I don’t have any objections.” His tone was serious and carried a hint of possessiveness, making Shen Qingyu think more deeply.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” Shen Qingyu lowered his gaze, saying shyly.
Cheng Che slowly took his hand and placed it on his chest. He gradually leaned toward Shen Qingyu, his breathing growing heavier. Just as he was about to kiss him, the sound of urgent footsteps suddenly came from behind them. Both their bodies stiffened simultaneously, then quickly separated, like a pair of high school sweethearts caught dating early.
“Let’s just go first,” Cheng Che said, frustrated.
Shen Qingyu obediently said “Mhm” and continued walking along the path, clutching his hands together.
Shen Qingyu only relaxed once they saw the large streetlights.
Looking from a distance, there weren’t many people on the field, probably because it wasn’t the weekend. In the center of the field, a tall, slender boy was sitting on the ground, with a large black speaker in front of him and a microphone in his hand, looking down to adjust the sound.
Cheng Che greeted the boy, briefly introduced Shen Qingyu to him, and then directly asked to borrow his equipment.
His friend readily agreed and said, “Why don’t you go live? Maybe you’ll gain some followers.”
Cheng Che smiled and waved his hand: “No need. I’m playing specifically for him today.”
The friend looked at Shen Qingyu with a curious gaze, seeming to wonder if their relationship was purely that of roommates.
“Are you from another college? I haven’t seen you around the PE college,” he asked.
Shen Qingyu responded naturally: “I’m from the School of Foreign Languages.”
“No wonder. Then how are you roommates with Cheng Che?”
“When I transferred rooms, the system seemed to have an issue and mistakenly assigned me to a dorm in the PE college.”
The guy was surprised by the blunder and laughed heartily a few times: “Well, you guys take over. I’ll take a break. My throat is killing me from singing just now.”
“Thanks. I’ll treat you to a drink later,” Cheng Che bumped fists with him.
“No problem, we’re buddies.”
Cheng Che played a love song. The melody was soft and delicate, perfectly matching his clear voice, making it incredibly pleasant to listen to. Someone knowledgeable about the guitar might notice his playing was a bit clumsy and nervous, but in Shen Qingyu’s eyes, the performance was perfect.
As the music faded, Shen Qingyu clapped vigorously to cheer him on: “Amazing! That was wonderfully played!”
“Really?” Cheng Che touched his neck awkwardly.
“Of course it’s real. I never lie.” In those brief minutes, Shen Qingyu felt like Cheng Che was a shining knight, and his entire body and soul were dedicated only to himself. This brought him immense satisfaction and fulfillment.
“Then I’ll learn a few more songs to play for you next time.”
Shen Qingyu’s eyes turned red. He bit his lip and whispered, “Why are you so good to me?”
This question made Cheng Che laugh out loud. He said, “Do I need a reason to be good to you? Haven’t we gotten together?”
Shen Qingyu nodded heavily. “You’re right. I’ll be good to you too.”
Cheng Che put down the guitar, rubbed his head, and said, “It’s okay even if you don’t do anything. Just letting me stay by your side is enough.”
Shen Qingyu had never heard such a sweet declaration of love, especially since Cheng Che’s words were extremely sincere and humble, completely devoid of any attempt to deceive, which made his heart ache even more.
Soon, tears welled up in Shen Qingyu’s eyes. Cheng Che was immediately flustered. He rushed forward to wipe his tears, saying helplessly, “Don’t cry…”
“I’m not crying,” Shen Qingyu insisted stubbornly.
“Yes, yes, you’re not crying. It’s just sand in your eyes.”
Shen Qingyu lightly bumped him. “You said everything I wanted to say. What am I supposed to say!”
His charmingly petulant manner completely captivated Cheng Che. His heart pounded wildly, thumping painfully in his chest.
“I was wrong,” Cheng Che surrendered, wanting to pluck the stars and the moon from the sky just to make him happy.
“Um… I don’t want to interrupt you two, but…” The friend who had been watching the show for a long time weakly broke the lovey-dovey atmosphere. “Cheng Che, are you done with this?”
“I’m done. You can take it back, thanks.” Cheng Che’s ears were burning. “What would you like to drink? Is juice okay?”
The friend teased: “Skip the drink. Bring me some wedding candy, though. Oh, and no soft candies, they stick to your teeth.”
Shen Qingyu: “…”
Cheng Che’s first reaction upon hearing this was to check Shen Qingyu’s reaction, seeing a faint blush on his face. He turned his back to Shen Qingyu and fiercely glared at his friend. “What nonsense are you talking about? I’m leaving the guitar here. Use it if you want. I’m going to the supermarket.”
Saying that, he pulled Shen Qingyu up. Their hands only touched for a few seconds before separating quickly as if burned, and they deliberately kept a distance from each other afterward, as if afraid others wouldn’t notice there was something special going on between them.
Shen Qingyu felt a little hungry on the way to the supermarket. After buying water for his friend, Cheng Che ran all the way back, afraid Shen Qingyu would wait too long, then ran back again. After all that running, he had a thin layer of sweat on him.
Shen Qingyu felt a pang of sympathy and took out a tissue for him to wipe his sweat. “You don’t need to rush so much. I won’t run away.”
“I know,” Cheng Che took his hand, letting him help wipe the sweat. “But I wanted to see you sooner.”
Shen Qingyu was taken aback. He avoided Cheng Che’s gaze, slightly overwhelmed by his sweet talk, and pulled his hand back, asking, “What should we eat?”
“Anything is fine for me. Whatever you want.”
Shen Qingyu glared at him with a straight face.
“How about a mini hot pot?” Cheng Che noticed no change in his expression and changed his suggestion, “Grilled meat rice? Rice noodles? Spicy hot pot?”
Shen Qingyu was amused by him. “I don’t know what to eat either. How about we go eat outside the school? I’m tired of the food here.”
“Okay, let’s go then.”
The snack street outside Wen University was always lively, especially in the summer. Even after the dorm curfew, the snack street was still brightly lit.
They navigated through the crowd and chose a chuan chuan xiang (skewer hot pot) restaurant.
When Shen Qingyu went to choose vegetables and meat, his phone vibrated twice on the table. Cheng Che glanced at the lit screen and saw that Lu Xiao was asking in the dorm group chat when he was coming back.
Cheng Che sneered, opened his own phone, and challenged him in the group. Now he had a legitimate status and didn’t need to tolerate Lu Xiao’s bad temper anymore, especially since he clearly saw what Lu Xiao was thinking about Shen Qingyu.
【Lu Xiao: @Shen Qingyu I brought you some sashimi. Come back quickly to eat it before it spoils.】
【Cheng Che: He probably can’t eat any more [Image]】
Cheng Che directly sent a picture of the hot pot they were currently eating. The steamy air blurred the photo, but it was clear that two people were eating together.
【Lu Xiao: Are you and Shen Qingyu eating together?】
【Cheng Che: Doesn’t concern you, does it?】
The moment he sent that message, Lu Xiao immediately called Shen Qingyu. Cheng Che secretly peeked at Shen Qingyu’s back, still choosing skewers, casually swiped the screen, and hung up on Lu Xiao.
When Shen Qingyu returned, Cheng Che was sitting bolt upright, a bit guilty.
“You should go get some skewers too,” Shen Qingyu said.
Cheng Che proactively admitted his mistake: “I just hung up on Lu Xiao’s call for you.”
Shen Qingyu was surprised, but didn’t have a strong reaction. “So?”
“Aren’t you angry that I touched your phone?”
Shen Qingyu froze for a second. After confirming that he had deleted all the spam messages in his inbox, he smiled and said, “You didn’t peek at my privacy, so why should I be angry? Why did Lu Xiao suddenly call me, though?”
When he decided to be with Cheng Che, he had already thought it through. Since they lived in the same dorm, they could hide it from others, but certainly not from their roommates. So he was prepared for Lu Xiao and Song Yu to find out. As for how to quell Lu Xiao’s anger when the time came… he hadn’t figured that out yet.
Thinking of this, Shen Qingyu felt a little worried. After all, Lu Xiao was like a Beagle dog—how much trouble he could stir up, Shen Qingyu knew all too well.
