Chapter 52: “Does he really want to confess?”
In the next second, Lu Xiao rolled his eyes, put on his pajamas, and shamelessly squeezed himself in between Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che.
“Move over. I’m sitting on the inside.”
Cheng Che stumbled from the impact. If he hadn’t grabbed the ladder, he would have been knocked down.
Mindful of his image in front of Shen Qingyu, Cheng Che suppressed his anger and didn’t argue with him. “Xiao Yu, are you still playing?”
Shen Qingyu was about to say, “Maybe not,” when he heard Lu Xiao dominantly say, “Yes, why not? All three of us will play.”
“…” Shen Qingyu closed his eyes. Here we go again. That familiar, tense, and sarcastic atmosphere of confrontation was back.
Feeling Lu Xiao’s piercing gaze on his back, Shen Qingyu compromised and nodded: “Okay, let’s play a little longer.”
Lu Xiao played jungle and was a dignified V10 with a complete set of skins. Setting aside the fact that he was too loud when playing, Shen Qingyu still liked playing with him, mainly because he could borrow skins.
“Use a couple skin with me,” he commanded imperiously.
Cheng Che lifted his eyelids and glared at him, speaking sarcastically: “What gives you the right? Xiao Yu, ignore him. Use whatever skin you like.”
Shen Qingyu’s finger slid past the Valentine’s Day skin, and he ultimately chose a limited edition skin from a New Year’s collection.
Lu Xiao complained, “Why won’t you use a couple skin with me?”
Shen Qingyu: “This one is prettier. I like this color.”
Lu Xiao grumbled with a depressed “Tch,” feeling he had lost face in front of Cheng Che.
With two people carrying the team this round, Shen Qingyu played easily but had to divide his attention to stop them from bickering.
“Link up with me and go straight to the jungle.”
“Xiao Yu, come to my side. Their support is coming down.”
“No need to go. I can carry.”
“Xiao Yu, stick with me. We’ll crush the bottom lane.”
“You? That’s hilarious. Shen Qingyu, watch my moves.”
“If you’re going to laugh, laugh somewhere else.”
Shen Qingyu was caught in the middle, in a constant state of rushing—either rushing to a lane or on the way to rush to a lane. Finally, exasperated, he simply went straight to the mid-lane to protect the mage: “You two are both great. You don’t need me to protect you. Good luck.”
Cheng Che, Lu Xiao: “…”
Both were determined to win the MVP to prove they were the best, so the entire game was played at double speed. In just over ten minutes, they pushed onto the opponent’s high ground and pinned them under the crystal.
As the results screen popped up, Lu Xiao saw the bright red “MVP” text next to his score and laughed smugly.
“Hurry up and praise me. I’m amazing, right?” Lu Xiao was like a puppy desperately needing his owner to pet him, his tail wagging furiously as he stared fixedly at Shen Qingyu.
Shen Qingyu felt a tingling sensation on his scalp from the intense gaze. “Amazing, amazing. Truly amazing.”
Upon hearing this, a flicker of jealousy crossed Cheng Che’s face. He leaned closer to Shen Qingyu. Their thighs were touching, making the posture look very intimate.
“What about me? I kept getting my kills stolen this game,” Cheng Che said, deliberately glancing at Lu Xiao. “Even so, I’m still second place in score.”
For some reason, Cheng Che also started vying for attention. Adhering to the principle of fairness, Shen Qingyu praised him too: “You’re amazing too. You’re both amazing.”
Cheng Che smiled contentedly, his two dimples making people want to reach out and poke them.
Lu Xiao was irritated just looking at that fawning smile. A nameless fire surged in his heart. He really wanted to rip off Cheng Che’s sheepskin. He tried to force a smile, but his face felt stiff. He knew perfectly well he couldn’t replicate Cheng Che’s smile.
Yet, Shen Qingyu seemed to respond very well to that smile, his eyes quickly filling with adoration. Anyone would think Cheng Che’s dimples were dosed with aphrodisiacs.
Such a big man, smiling so sweetly. How disgusting! Lu Xiao thought scornfully.
But the word “surrender” wasn’t in Lu Xiao’s dictionary. He decided he needed to study how to smile to make Shen Qingyu like him more. He absolutely couldn’t lose to Cheng Che in this matter.
…
The weekend was Cheng Che’s birthday, which Shen Qingyu only found out about two days in advance.
Cheng Che wasn’t the type of person who liked to loudly announce his birthday. He didn’t seem to plan on celebrating it lavishly either.
He had initially only wanted to have dinner alone with Shen Qingyu, but Lu Xiao and Chen Qiming ruined that plan.
On Wednesday evening, Shen Qingyu returned to the dorm after his evening class, eating a fruit salad while watching variety shows.
Cheng Che was pacing back and forth in the dorm. Shen Qingyu looked back and saw him standing silently behind him, his fists clenched, his earlobes flushed. Shen Qingyu’s heart was racing. He almost thought Cheng Che was about to confess to him.
“That…” Cheng Che suddenly spoke, startling both of them. Even he hadn’t intended to speak out loud. He stammered “that” for a long time without making any coherent point.
“What is it?”
“Are… are you free this Saturday?”
No way? Is he really going to confess? Isn’t this a bit fast? Wait, maybe not. They had known each other for over half a year…
Shen Qingyu wasn’t stupid. He could feel who treated him well, and he could sense what kind of liking that kindness stemmed from. But… Shen Qingyu was a little unsure how to respond.
Cheng Che was great. Being with him would certainly be happy. But…
Shen Qingyu let out a faint sigh. He found himself resistant to all of this. Because people are often happiest when they are on the brink of happiness, he was worried that the relationship might not last. If so, he would lose not just a lover, but a rare and valued friend.
Essentially, Shen Qingyu was a coward.
“I’m free.”
“Then let’s have dinner together on Saturday,” Cheng Che smiled in relief. “I’m going to get a haircut Saturday morning. My hair is getting a bit long.” He raised his hand to fiddle with his curly hair.
“Okay. Where should we eat?”
“Let me keep it a secret for now,” Cheng Che slightly bent down. His chin was just above Shen Qingyu’s head. If he lowered his head further, he could pull him into an embrace.
Shen Qingyu stiffened all over. “Why are you deliberately teasing me?”
“Teasing? Teasing about what? Let me hear it too?” Lu Xiao’s voice echoed in the air like a ghost.
Shen Qingyu jumped in surprise. He hadn’t noticed when Lu Xiao appeared.
“It’s none of your business,” Cheng Che’s voice turned cold. He glanced at Shen Qingyu’s fluffy head and a look of tenderness returned. “This is a secret between Xiao Yu and me.”
Lu Xiao’s suspicious gaze darted back and forth between the two. He resolved to compete with Cheng Che and gave a cold smile:
“He’s the only one with a little secret with you? Shen Qingyu and I have a big secret.”
After saying that, he glanced smugly at Shen Qingyu.
Shen Qingyu instantly knew what his “big secret” was—it was about their trip together. Afraid that Lu Xiao might carelessly reveal it, Shen Qingyu shot him a harsh glare, threatening him with his eyes: “Dare to say it out loud.”
Receiving his signal, Lu Xiao shrugged and plopped down on his gaming chair.
Cheng Che didn’t care what Lu Xiao’s “big secret” was. He even thought Lu Xiao was just saying it to try and distract him.
“Then that’s settled,” Cheng Che raised his hand, rubbed Shen Qingyu’s head, and then went to the bathroom to wash up.
Shen Qingyu no longer had the mood to watch the variety show. He finished the rest of his fruit salad, wiped his mouth, and started daydreaming.
There was a knock on the dorm door, but the person who knocked was clearly very familiar with the occupants. Before anyone could say “Come in,” the door was pushed open, and the person entered as if the dorm were their own home.
“Hey, where’s Chezi?” Chen Qiming casually pulled out Cheng Che’s chair and sat next to Lu Xiao. “Are Brother Xiao and Xiao Yu free this weekend?”
“Doing what?” Lu Xiao was playing a game and barely spared him a glance.
“I’m asking you!” he said mysteriously.
Shen Qingyu was about to say, “No,” when he heard Chen Qiming, who couldn’t keep a secret, blurt out, “It’s Chezi’s birthday on Saturday. Let’s go out and celebrate! Get a big private room at a KTV and have some fun?”
Even though it was Cheng Che’s birthday, Chen Qiming was incredibly excited, acting as if he were the protagonist.
Wait a minute? Saturday?
Wasn’t that the day Cheng Che invited him to dinner?
So, Cheng Che didn’t want to confess to him. He just wanted to invite him to a gathering because it was his birthday?
Shen Qingyu was amused by his own narcissism and overthinking. He was relieved that Chen Qiming had revealed the correct answer, or he would have been restless until the day he had dinner with Cheng Che.
“Have you mentioned this to Cheng Che?” Shen Qingyu asked.
“Not yet. I came here to discuss it with him.”
“…He’s taking a shower in the bathroom. Wait a moment.”
“So, are you free this weekend?” Chen Qiming asked.
“Cheng Che invited me to dinner this weekend. I don’t know if he only planned dinner or dinner and fun together,” Shen Qingyu replied truthfully.
Lu Xiao perked up his ears. His mind whirred, and with a man’s intuition, he guessed that Cheng Che actually wanted a private date with Shen Qingyu.
How could he possibly allow that to happen?
Lu Xiao smirked and said, “It won’t interfere. Let’s go together! All of us roommates should celebrate Cheng Che’s birthday together.”
Chen Qiming: “Yeah! Let’s invite a few more people. It’ll be so lively!”
Shen Qingyu: “…Then I’ll ask Song Yu when he gets back.”
Cheng Che had no idea that his meticulously planned date had just dissolved into thin air through the collaboration of Lu Xiao and Chen Qiming.
“What are you guys talking about?” Cheng Che opened the bathroom door, wiping his wet hair. He saw Chen Qiming and had a bad premonition. He raised an eyebrow. “Why are you here?”
“We’re discussing how to celebrate your birthday!” Chen Qiming said cheerily.
Cheng Che paused his hair-wiping motion, a flicker of something like a crack in his expression: “Birthday?”
“Yeah! This Saturday! As your good brother, how could I forget your birthday!” Chen Qiming said proudly. “I remember Brother Xiao’s too. You’re a Virgo and he’s a Sagittarius.”
