Chapter 50: “As long as you like it.”
The next second, Shen Qingyu was pressed into his arms, chest to chest. Shen Qingyu felt like he was suffocating and struggled a few times before breaking free.
Just as Shen Qingyu was about to scold him for constantly getting physical, he heard Lu Xiao say, “I’ll help you.”
Immediately, the clothes in his hands were gone. Lu Xiao actually grabbed a hanger and started hanging up his clothes.
Shen Qingyu: “…”
If someone was eager to help, there was no reason to refuse, especially since Lu Xiao took advantage of him every so often.
With Lu Xiao’s clumsy help, Shen Qingyu quickly finished organizing his bed area. Then, they worked together to give the common area a quick clean.
After working for a long time, they looked up and realized it was already past two in the afternoon.
“Let’s go eat,” Shen Qingyu said, searching for his phone. “Hey, where’s my phone?”
Lu Xiao had watched the phone in Shen Qingyu’s hand the whole time. He couldn’t help but chuckle, then gave him a look as if he were watching an idiot. He gently pulled the phone out of Shen Qingyu’s grasp: “Isn’t it right here?”
Shen Qingyu was silent for a moment, then nonchalantly tucked the phone into his pocket, cleared his throat twice, and said, “Let’s go. My treat.”
Lu Xiao played along, pretending the situation wasn’t hilarious, and worked hard to suppress the corners of his mouth.
“What are you going to treat me to?” Lu Xiao was quite curious.
When Lu Xiao went out to eat with friends, he usually paid. His friends knew his family was wealthy and never refused. Over time, Lu Xiao had gotten used to it.
So, when Shen Qingyu suddenly offered to treat him, he felt a strange sense of novelty.
“The cafeteria. The cafeteria is open today.”
“You’re only treating me to the cafeteria?” Lu Xiao was a little unhappy. He draped his arm over Shen Qingyu’s shoulder, leaning his weight on him as a form of subtle pressure.
“What’s wrong with the cafeteria?” Shen Qingyu gave him a look. He knew this was Lu Xiao’s young master temperament, but Shen Qingyu didn’t intend to indulge him. “We all eat at the cafeteria. If you don’t want to, forget it. I offer to treat you, and you’re so demanding.”
With that, Shen Qingyu shrugged off his arm and walked away.
Lu Xiao hadn’t expected Shen Qingyu to take his joke seriously and get angry. He quickly rushed forward to block him and coaxed, “I was just kidding. Why did you get mad? I never said I wouldn’t eat there. I’ll eat whatever you treat me to.”
Shen Qingyu glared at him: “If you’re not willing, don’t force yourself. I don’t have to treat you.”
“Willing, willing! I’m willing to do anything you ask.” Lu Xiao was quick with sweet talk now. “Come on. Truthfully, since starting university, I can count the number of times I’ve eaten at the cafeteria on one hand.”
His tone was quite exaggerated and easily made Shen Qingyu laugh.
“Then let me give you some tips on what’s good at the cafeteria,” Shen Qingyu said. “Since you don’t have an allowance now, the cafeteria is better—it’s cheap and a large portion.”
“Okay, I’ll listen to you.”
Shen Qingyu gave him a side glance, increasingly feeling that Lu Xiao was shameless, yet Shen Qingyu had no way to deal with him.
“You’re smiling?” Lu Xiao got ridiculously close to observe his expression, even though a normal social distance would have been fine. “Now that you’re smiling, you’re not allowed to give me the cold shoulder anymore.”
“I wasn’t giving you the cold shoulder.”
“Then why were you glaring and rolling your eyes? Your face was miserable.”
Shen Qingyu found him truly hilarious.
“Don’t you feel guilty saying that?” Shen Qingyu scornfully poked his chest. “I still remember when I first moved in, someone looked like he was about to eat me, and was especially narcissistic, saying I shouldn’t try anything with him.”
Lu Xiao did feel a little guilty but still retorted self-righteously: “Bringing up old scores, are we?” He playfully put one hand on Shen Qingyu’s neck as if threatening him.
“How is that bringing up old scores? I’m just telling the truth!” Shen Qingyu said stubbornly and firmly.
“Fine, you win.” Lu Xiao had absolutely no way to deal with him and could only concede.
“Then hurry up and let go of me!” Shen Qingyu, with his neck held, had his back pressed tightly against Lu Xiao’s chest. The distance was so close that Shen Qingyu could clearly feel the rise and fall of Lu Xiao’s chest when he spoke.
“I won’t let go.”
“Hurry up!”
“Then beg me.”
“Lu Xiao, are you sick?”
“Yes, is this the first day you’ve known that?”
“…”
…
Freshman orientation day was the third day after Shen Qingyu returned to school.
The main reason Shen Qingyu returned early was to help welcome the new students.
The School of Foreign Languages inherently had few male students. The English major was slightly better, but overall, girls still made up the majority.
So, Shen Qingyu was tasked with guiding new students. After they completed their registration, he had to take them to the dorm building to drop off their luggage. After that, he had to take them to process their water cards and collect their military training uniforms.
The weather was excellent on the day of orientation. After a week of overcast skies, it finally cleared up.
But walking around under the bright sun was still tough for Shen Qingyu. Luckily, he had applied sunscreen beforehand, or he would surely have gotten a sunburn.
Thinking of this, Shen Qingyu started to worry if Cheng Che might get sunburned.
Cheng Che returned a day after Shen Qingyu, also specifically to help welcome new students. His heart sank when he saw Lu Xiao and Shen Qingyu lying on their respective beds. He hadn’t expected Lu Xiao to return early, which actually left more private time for him and Shen Qingyu alone. The thought alone made Cheng Che irritated.
Although he and Shen Qingyu weren’t together, his possessiveness toward Shen Qingyu was undiminished.
The P.E. Department’s welcome booth was near the School of Foreign Languages. Shen Qingyu looked around but didn’t see Cheng Che.
At this moment, Song Anran’s voice came from behind: “Shen Qingyu! Take this junior sister to the dorm. She’s in Building A, Room 513.”
Shen Qingyu quickly responded, stepped forward, and took the luggage from the bob-haired junior sister in front of him.
“Is this the only one?” he asked, a bit surprised.
New students usually brought big and small bags, but this junior sister only had one small suitcase?
The bob-haired junior sister touched her neck. She hadn’t expected the senior helping her with her luggage to be so handsome. She had noticed him while waiting in line to submit her documents and her eyes had gone wide. She even fantasized about him being her direct senior. Unexpectedly, her fantasy came true in just a few minutes.
“No, all of these are mine,” she said timidly.
Following her gaze, Shen Qingyu looked… one, two, three… four… five!
A total of three suitcases and two woven bags.
Junior sister, did you move your whole house here????
Shen Qingyu took a deep breath and said with a wry smile, “Let’s go then.”
The woven bags could be placed on top of the suitcases. Shen Qingyu took the lead, pushing the two 26-inch suitcases. Seeing her embarrassment, he proactively comforted her: “It’s fine. The school dorm has an elevator. We can wait in line for the elevator.”
“Thank you, Senior.”
After pushing the suitcases on flat ground for a while, Shen Qingyu looked at the steps not far away, feeling a bit daunted.
He was thinking about the least strenuous way to lift the two suitcases up.
Just as he was pondering, a familiar figure flashed before his eyes. Shen Qingyu’s eyes lit up.
Song Yu had just finished dropping off a new student at the dorm and saw Shen Qingyu as he left the teaching building. He hadn’t seen him in a while, and Song Yu thought he looked even better, making it impossible to look away once you saw him.
He first saw Shen Qingyu’s cheeks, slightly flushed from the heat, and then the suitcases he was pushing with both hands.
Song Yu’s mouth moved, and he stepped forward: “I’ll help you.”
Having an acquaintance help out was the best thing ever.
At that moment, Shen Qingyu felt like Song Yu was a godsend, saving him from dire straits.
Compared to Shen Qingyu’s struggle, Song Yu carrying the heavy suitcases up the stairs seemed effortless.
He helped Shen Qingyu carry the luggage into the girls’ dorm.
On orientation day, to accommodate new students, boys and parents were allowed into the girls’ dorm building.
“Thank you so much!” Shen Qingyu said breathlessly.
Song Yu smiled and said lightly, “It’s nothing. I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
Although Shen Qingyu didn’t know why he was waiting, he agreed readily: “Okay, I’ll be right down.”
…
After escorting the junior sister into the dorm, Shen Qingyu’s task was temporarily over. He patted his sore palms and took the elevator back down.
Song Yu was still waiting for him outside the dorm building. Even under the blazing sun, he showed none of the common distress, standing tall and straight like a resilient bamboo growing against the wind.
Shen Qingyu bought two ice creams from the vending machine on the first floor. He quietly walked behind Song Yu and deliberately pressed the ice cream against his face. Seeing him flinch from the cold, he couldn’t help but giggle.
“Here, ice cream for you,” Shen Qingyu said playfully. “How was that? Wasn’t it especially cooling?”
Song Yu glanced at him helplessly. “Mhm, very cooling.”
Shen Qingyu detected a hint of fondness in his words, and his heart sped up uncontrollably.
He was truly exhausted. Throwing caution to the wind, he squatted down to eat his ice cream.
Song Yu stood in front of him, casting a shadow that perfectly covered Shen Qingyu.
Knowing that Song Yu was shielding him from the sun, Shen Qingyu felt an indescribable tenderness and gratitude.
“Is it good? Do you like this kind of milky ice cream?” Shen Qingyu loved eating the large milk brick-style ice cream; he found it sweet and fragrant. He didn’t know what Song Yu liked, so he thought he’d let him try his favorite ice cream.
Song Yu took a bite of the ice cream. The icy feeling rapidly spread from his teeth. With the taste of milk in his mouth, he said, “It’s quite tasty.”
Shen Qingyu was delighted. He liked the feeling of successfully recommending his favorite food to a friend; it gave him a sense of accomplishment.
“As long as you like it.” He licked his lips. He forgot he had just finished a scoop of ice cream and accidentally left a milky white ring around his mouth.
Song Yu’s eyes deepened, suppressing a difficult urge in his throat. After a brief internal struggle, he also licked his lips.
“Why are you staring at me?” Shen Qingyu asked, confused.
Song Yu pointed to his lips, “The corner of your mouth. You got ice cream on it.”
Shen Qingyu blinked and let out a lazy “Oh.” He pulled out a tissue and dabbed at the area Song Yu pointed to. “How about now?”
He couldn’t see it and was just blindly dabbing, making the corner of his mouth red. Song Yu quietly took the tissue from his hand and very gently wiped him clean.
“All better.” Song Yu crumpled the used tissue in his palm and squeezed it tightly.
Shen Qingyu held out his hand and said, “Thanks. I’ll throw it in the trash can.”
Song Yu shook his head. “I’ll do it.”
With that, he took Shen Qingyu’s empty ice cream wrapper and wooden stick, walked the few steps to the nearest trash can, and threw them both in. Before turning back, Shen Qingyu saw him tuck something into his pants pocket.
After finishing one ice cream, Shen Qingyu felt much cooler from the inside out.
His mind was fixated on what Song Yu had put away. Thinking about it, he patted his legs, preparing to stand up, but his foot gave way, and his body suddenly lurched forward.
Yet, Shen Qingyu didn’t panic, because Song Yu was standing right in front of him. He knew that Song Yu would surely catch him.
