Chapter 48: “You are truly my mother!”
Shen Qingyu’s heart pounded for a long time because of that hug.
He tossed and turned in bed, completely unable to sleep. His mind was filled with the question: Why did he hug me?
He couldn’t figure it out no matter how hard he tried. He even wondered if he should just ask directly, but when he opened the chat window with Cheng Che, he fell silent again. He felt that the hug didn’t carry any lustful overtones; it was a very pure embrace.
Did I really overthink it?
Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but doubt himself.
Shen Qingyu decided to distract himself, so he opened a video app, logged into his secondary account, and found that the default account with a string of numbers for a nickname, which looked like an NPC, had sent him more than a dozen messages. Catching sight of the account, he had to think for a moment before remembering that it was Song Yu’s account.
He chuckled helplessly and changed the contact’s name, then opened the videos Song Yu had forwarded to him one by one.
He had been traveling for the past few days, feeling exhausted every day. Let alone short videos, he barely checked his Moments. He hadn’t expected Song Yu to persistently forward videos to him daily.
They were mostly videos of very cute cats and dogs, with the occasional landscape scene. The accompanying comments were very machine-like: “Very cute cat.” “Very chubby dog.” “Very beautiful scenery.”
Hmm…
The term “old person” quietly popped into Shen Qingyu’s mind.
Despite thinking this, Shen Qingyu watched every single one, then replied to them individually: “So cute, I want to snuggle it,” “It is indeed very chubby, worried about its health,” “Simply an earthly paradise!”
Hmm…
The term “Emperor reviewing memorials” popped into Shen Qingyu’s mind, judging himself.
After this interaction, Shen Qingyu quickly cast aside Cheng Che’s confusing hug.
On Sunday, Shen Qingyu taught his last tutoring session and walked out of the student’s home with a sense of relief.
Next Friday, he would return to school, and this time he would be a sophomore. Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but feel that the past year had flown by too quickly.
He rested at home all afternoon, then went to his aunt’s house for dinner, where he brought up his trip. His aunt was very surprised.
In his aunt’s eyes, Shen Qingyu was a particularly well-behaved child. When he first mentioned moving out, she strongly disagreed, always worrying that he would be bullied, suffer grievances, and be unable to take care of himself alone.
But until that day, Shen Qingyu hugged her with a smile and told her, “Auntie, I know you mean well, but you can’t protect me forever. You have Uncle and Xiao Chen. You’ve taken care of me for so long; it’s time for me to grow up.”
When his aunt heard him say this, tears streamed down her face. Ever since Shen Qingyu’s parents passed away, he had stayed by her side, well-behaved and obedient, unlike her own son, who was hard to manage. He was always the “child of another family” spoken of by the neighbors. She was always proud of him, but the more she felt this way, the more she felt she owed him. She often wondered what kind of life Xiao Yu would have had if his parents were still alive—he would definitely be more optimistic.
But she also knew she couldn’t take care of him forever. As Xiao Chen grew up, her attention was gradually divided.
Until the day Xiao Yu suggested moving out.
“You haven’t been bullied outside, have you?” His aunt held his shoulders, carefully examining him with her eyes. She only relaxed when she found no injuries on him.
Shen Qingyu felt a little helpless, “Auntie, this is a law-abiding society. I went traveling and consuming; how could I be wronged?” As he spoke, he took out the souvenirs he brought for her. “These are the local specialties I bought especially for you. This chili oil is especially fragrant. Don’t you love chili sauce? Try this one.”
His aunt was an emotional person. She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes: “Okay, it looks delicious.”
“Of course, I tasted it myself before buying it for you.”
Seeing Shen Qingyu’s proud expression, his aunt also smiled.
“Xiao Yu, stay here tonight,” his aunt said. “Tell Auntie all about your trip.”
Shen Qingyu hesitated for a moment but nodded in agreement.
…
Shen Qingyu had an evening shift on Monday, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a break time in the evening. He arranged to have dinner with Cheng Che during his break.
Cheng Che appeared at the clothing store half an hour early, holding two cups of milk tea.
As soon as the time came, Shen Qingyu clocked out for his evening break.
Cheng Che handed him the milk tea: “I got you three-tenths sugar.”
Shen Qingyu liked milk tea and fruit tea but didn’t like them too sweet. He usually got three-tenths sugar for milk tea and half sugar with ice for fruit tea.
“Thank you!” Shen Qingyu poked the straw in and took a big gulp, his cheeks bulging like a small animal feeding. “So delicious~”
Drinking his favorite milk tea, Shen Qingyu squinted, his face full of happiness.
Cheng Che found his appearance incredibly cute and couldn’t help but poke his bulging cheek with his finger. Fortunately, Shen Qingyu swallowed quickly, or he might have sprayed milk tea onto his hand.
“…”
“…”
Cheng Che touched his neck, embarrassed, and said, “I’m sorry.”
He apologized so quickly that Shen Qingyu’s momentary annoyance was quelled before it could even fully form. He could only say helplessly, “It’s fine.”
They wandered around the mall for a long time without deciding what to eat.
Suddenly, a female voice came from behind: “Cheng Che!”
Shen Qingyu and Cheng Che turned around simultaneously and saw a woman in a light green long dress with a low bun waving at them. Next to her stood a woman who looked quite similar to her.
Shen Qingyu looked closely and found the smiling woman very familiar.
It was Cheng Che’s mother!
“Mom? Auntie?”
Shen Qingyu immediately felt a bit awkward. He took two steps back and hid behind Cheng Che, trying to analyze the situation.
Wait a minute? Why am I being so secretive? We’re not having a secret affair! Cheng Che and I are just having dinner together!
Shen Qingyu realized the impropriety of his action and stepped forward, standing side-by-side with Cheng Che.
“This is…” Cheng Che’s mother looked at Shen Qingyu, her eyes suddenly lighting up. “This must be the roommate you often talk about. He’s so handsome!”
“…” Shen Qingyu was silent for two seconds, then quickly said, “Hello, Auntie. I’m Shen Qingyu, Cheng Che’s roommate.”
Cheng Che’s mother quickly let go of her sister’s hand and took Shen Qingyu’s hand, caressing the back of it: “You’re so handsome! Your skin is so fair!”
Shen Qingyu felt too awkward to pull his hand back, so he let Cheng Che’s mother’s dry palm stroke the back of his hand.
He gave Cheng Che a look of distress.
Cheng Che: “Mom, let go quickly. You’re scaring him.”
Cheng Che’s mother let go reluctantly: “Alright.”
Cheng Che’s aunt asked, “Are you two going to eat?”
Cheng Che’s mother immediately said, “Why don’t we all eat together? Your aunt and I were just about to grab a bite.”
Cheng Che figured Shen Qingyu probably wouldn’t enjoy this situation, so he glanced at him for his opinion. Seeing his difficult expression, he quickly said, “Mom, Auntie, what’s the point of us eating with you? We won’t have anything to talk about.”
A look of sadness immediately appeared on Cheng Che’s mother’s face. She murmured, “Now that you’ve grown up, you feel like you have nothing to talk about with your mom. When you were little, you used to run straight to me when you got home!”
Cheng Che was so embarrassed he wished he could quickly take Shen Qingyu and run. He was terrified his mother would say something else to embarrass him.
Shen Qingyu, seeing the atmosphere getting strange, quickly said, “Eating together is fine. It doesn’t matter.”
“See? Xiao Yu said it’s fine! Otherwise, you can go eat by yourself, and your aunt, Xiao Yu, and I will eat together. I’ll treat Xiao Yu to a bunch of good food!” Cheng Che’s mother said.
Cheng Che: “…”
They all went to eat hot pot together.
Throughout the meal, Cheng Che’s mother was extremely enthusiastic, praising Shen Qingyu every three sentences, either complimenting his handsome appearance or his good personality, and constantly saying, “I wish I had a son like you!”
“Then adopt him as your son,” Cheng Che joked.
Unexpectedly, Cheng Che’s mother cooperated fully: “That’s a great idea! Xiao Yu, would you be willing to be my godson?”
Shen Qingyu saw the anticipation in her eyes. Against his better judgment, he slowly nodded twice.
Cheng Che’s mother was overjoyed, her smile becoming brighter, thrilled as if she had given birth to a child herself. She frequently put food in Shen Qingyu’s bowl but never asked about his family, only casually asking a few questions about school.
Shen Qingyu looked at her gentle features and the faint wrinkles at the corners of her eyes, and couldn’t help but think: If my mother were still alive, she would surely be this easy to get along with.
Cheng Che noticed that Shen Qingyu’s plate was already piled high and quickly stopped his mother from serving any more food: “Mom, don’t put so much food on Xiao Yu’s plate. He won’t be able to finish it.”
“If he can’t finish it, you can eat it. You have a big appetite anyway.” Cheng Che’s mother, who was holding the serving chopsticks over Shen Qingyu’s plate, changed direction and dropped the food onto Cheng Che’s plate instead.
Cheng Che: “…” You are truly my mother!
“Xiao Yu, do you want to come over to our house tomorrow?” Cheng Che’s mother eagerly invited him.
Cheng Che: “He already came over on Saturday.”
“That’s too bad, I wasn’t home. Next time you come, tell me, and I’ll cook you some delicious food.”
Cheng Che: “Mom, with your cooking skills, let’s just leave it. Let Dad do the cooking.”
Cheng Che had previously told him that in their family, his dad cooked and he washed the dishes, but recently, after he learned to cook, it became him cooking and his dad washing the dishes.
And so, Shen Qingyu inexplicably exchanged contact information with Cheng Che’s mother.
After dinner, Cheng Che and Shen Qingyu said goodbye to the elders. Cheng Che’s mother and aunt were going to continue shopping.
Watching the two elders leave, Cheng Che sighed and said, “My mom didn’t scare you, did she? That’s just how she is.”
“Your mother and aunt are both very nice. I wasn’t scared,” he said sweetly.
“My mom secretly asked me earlier what you ate to grow up so handsome. She really likes you.” Cheng Che showed him the chat history with his mother.
It was clear their mother-son relationship was very good. Just a few hours ago, the chat content was about her not coming home for dinner tomorrow either, telling Cheng Che to fend for himself or go out to eat, but to ask his dad for money if he went out.
Shen Qingyu’s envy was palpable. Thinking about it, the person who truly had a happy family was Cheng Che. No wonder he was so cheerful and optimistic.
“Your family is so wonderful, so happy.”
