Chapter 47: “Then I’ll go now, goodnight.”…
Cheng Che found a large, floral-patterned cushion for him to sit on the floor, leaning against the sofa. He then pulled out controllers, and the two agreed to play Overcooked.
Since Shen Qingyu hadn’t played a few of the maps before, Cheng Che taught him how to play.
“Yes, just throw it to me.”
“I’ll chop the vegetables and send them over to you on the conveyor belt.”
“Give me the dirty plates; I’ll wash them over here.”
“Don’t worry, take your time. The fire extinguisher is on my side.”
The few times Shen Qingyu had played this game, it was always with Yang Yu. They would be loud and rowdy, often shifting blame when things got hectic. This was the first time he experienced “gentleness” while playing this game.
Amidst Cheng Che’s soft-spoken instructions, Shen Qingyu couldn’t help but secretly glance at him.
“What’s wrong?” Cheng Che noticed his gaze and let out a soft chuckle.
He was wearing off-white loungewear, and his hair was neatly styled, making him look very clean and fresh. Especially when the sunlight fell on him, Shen Qingyu found him particularly lovely.
Shen Qingyu said, “This is the first time I’ve met someone who can play this game so… gently.”
Cheng Che burst into laughter: “Did you want me to yell at you?”
“No, not at all.”
“I think you’re playing very well,” Cheng Che said earnestly. “You haven’t seen how clumsy my little brother is when he plays this game.”
Shen Qingyu looked at the chaotic game screen. The two incorrect orders were his fault for rushing the delivery. They had lost a lot of coins, yet Cheng Che still thought he played well. He began to wonder just how terribly Cheng Che’s brother played.
Cheng Che’s phone rang. He looked at the caller ID, put down the controller, and said, “Keep playing for a bit. Wait for me. My delivery is here.”
“Huh?”
Shen Qingyu was flustered, holding both controllers. He controlled his own character for a bit, then had to control Cheng Che’s character. In just a few minutes, he was sweating and felt like his eyes were blurring.
“Open your mouth.”
A piece of cantaloupe was popped into Shen Qingyu’s mouth. He chewed and said, “What did you buy?”
“I bought some vegetables and meat. I promised to cook for you, remember? Try my cooking.”
The chewing slowed down. The cantaloupe was sweet, but Shen Qingyu felt a sourness in his heart.
Cheng Che picked up his controller again, and the scene instantly became orderly. However, Shen Qingyu was a bit out of sorts. Several times, Cheng Che asked him to throw vegetables, but he threw the wrong ones.
Noticing his distraction, Cheng Che didn’t start the next round after the current one ended. Instead, he tilted his head and observed Shen Qingyu’s expression.
“Don’t you want to play anymore?”
Truthfully, if Cheng Che hadn’t mentioned it, Shen Qingyu would have almost forgotten their agreement, but he hadn’t expected Cheng Che to genuinely keep it in mind.
Shen Qingyu shook his head and said, “No, let’s play a little longer.”
“Alright.” Cheng Che figured he might not like the current mode, so he switched to a simpler map.
After playing for about an hour more, Cheng Che got up to prepare dinner for him.
He had originally told Shen Qingyu to play whatever he wanted, but Shen Qingyu felt awkward letting him cook alone, so he followed him into the kitchen.
Shen Qingyu noticed that although Cheng Che’s cooking movements were a bit clumsy, he had the overall flair of a chef and didn’t look like a beginner at all.
With Shen Qingyu present, Cheng Che was quite nervous, and Shen Qingyu took in all his flustered movements. Shen Qingyu occasionally offered guidance and even gently wiped the sweat from his forehead.
“I practiced at home a few times and cooked for my parents, so you can eat without worry,” Cheng Che said, with some confidence. “My mom said it was pretty good, but she might have been wearing thick ‘motherly filter’ glasses.”
Shen Qingyu hadn’t expected Cheng Che to practice in advance for a promise that he didn’t know when he could fulfill, and this moved him greatly.
“Actually, your slicing and stir-frying movements are quite skilled. It’s really impressive for a beginner to reach this level,” Shen Qingyu praised without hesitation. “I definitely wasn’t this good when I first started learning to cook.”
Cheng Che was clearly delighted by the praise, the curve of his lips very pronounced: “Really? Does that mean I have some talent in this area?”
“Yes, you are very talented.”
Cheng Che chuckled, served the cooked dish onto a plate, and used chopsticks to offer a small piece of meat to his mouth: “Try it and see how it tastes.”
Shen Qingyu first lightly touched his lips, then opened his mouth to take the meat. His pupils slightly dilated as he exclaimed, “It’s delicious!” As he spoke, he raised both hands and gave a thumbs-up.
Neither his expression nor his actions looked fake. Cheng Che immediately relaxed. He had been so afraid of “failure” this time, but thankfully, everything went smoothly.
They didn’t eat at the dining table. Instead, they chose to sit on the floor, eating at the small coffee table.
They sat close, arms brushing against each other, watching a movie while they ate.
After the meal, Cheng Che washed and cut some fruit. Shen Qingyu ate two pieces but couldn’t manage any more, waving his hands and saying his stomach was so full it was about to burst.
Cheng Che just intended to tease him, but he was slightly taken aback when his gaze fell on Shen Qingyu’s slightly bulging stomach.
Shen Qingyu didn’t know what image flashed through Cheng Che’s mind. He just rubbed his belly, secretly glad he hadn’t worn jeans that required a belt today, or he might have been forced to unbuckle and adjust it.
…
Cheng Che’s house was a bit far from Shen Qingyu’s. After eating, Cheng Che washed the dishes, and they played games for a while. Seeing that it was getting late, Cheng Che, though reluctant, offered to take him home.
Shen Qingyu was also planning to leave, but he felt he didn’t need to be escorted. He tried to stand up, but because he had maintained one posture for too long on the floor, it was a bit difficult to get up. Shen Qingyu instinctively put his hands down to brace himself, but his legs were numb, and his body went soft, causing him to fall directly onto Cheng Che.
“Ugh…” Cheng Che let out a muffled groan.
Shen Qingyu scrambled to his feet, seeing his pained expression: “I-I’m sorry. Are you okay?”
Shen Qingyu wasn’t actually heavy, but unfortunately, the position where he landed was just too precise…
Cheng Che didn’t want him to feel too guilty. He curled up, covering his painful lower body, but Shen Qingyu still noticed.
“D-Did I hurt you?” Shen Qingyu knelt beside him, his face crumpled with worry. Noticing that Cheng Che was slightly turned to the side and clutching his lower body, a thought flashed through his mind. “Did I… hit you there?”
Cheng Che didn’t know how to answer.
This worried Shen Qingyu immensely. He gently placed his hand on Cheng Che’s arm: “Do you need to go to the hospital?”
Cheng Che’s expression was complicated. He covered his face with his arm in slight frustration. He didn’t want Shen Qingyu to see his strange expression right now. Even without a mirror, he could guess what his face looked like.
Because more than the pain… what Cheng Che felt in those few seconds was, surprisingly, more like pleasure.
Pain and pleasure were interwoven. The more it hurt, the better it felt. Inseparable.
“Cheng Che, s-speak to me.” Shen Qingyu’s voice was trembling. The longer Cheng Che stayed silent, the more worried Shen Qingyu became that something serious had happened.
“I’m fine.” Cheng Che moved his arm away. His lips were pale, but his eyes, when he looked at Shen Qingyu, were firm.
Shen Qingyu nervously glanced at his crotch. “Are you really sure?”
He was afraid Cheng Che was just being tough for the sake of his pride.
“Really.” Cheng Che took a moment to quietly recover. As the painful sensation gradually faded, he let out a long breath and stood up.
“Let me take you home,” he said to Shen Qingyu with a smile.
Shen Qingyu felt that Cheng Che needed to rest now to avoid any real injury. But he felt awkward saying it directly, so he kept waving his hands: “I can go back by myself.”
Cheng Che seemed to have a ready response: “But I want to spend a little more time with you. Just let me take you.”
He looked at Shen Qingyu with pitiful, puppy eyes, making it impossible for Shen Qingyu to refuse.
After all, harming a puppy is unforgivable!
“…Alright then.”
How do both of them know my weakness?!
Shen Qingyu roared in impotent rage in his mind.
There weren’t many people on the subway at this time. They found two empty seats as soon as they boarded.
The subway ride would take over an hour in total. Cheng Che opened his palm, revealing an earbud resting inside: “Listen to my playlist this time.”
Shen Qingyu was about to put it on, but Cheng Che feigned a move and pulled his hand back. He looked at Cheng Che, confused about what he meant.
Cheng Che simply helped him put on the earbud and made a small adjustment: “How is it? Is it uncomfortable?”
He was constantly concerned about Shen Qingyu’s experience, which Shen Qingyu found very heartwarming.
Shen Qingyu shook his head. Cheerful music flowed into his ears. Unlike what he expected, Cheng Che’s playlist leaned more towards lyrical styles.
When the music switched to the next track, Shen Qingyu recognized it as a relatively obscure song from his own playlist, based solely on the first two or three seconds of the intro.
Shen Qingyu said in surprise, “You like this song too?”
“No. I listened to your playlist last time and thought this song was really good, so I specifically added it to mine.”
Cheng Che escorted him all the way to his door.
“It’s getting late. Be careful on your way back!” Shen Qingyu said.
“Are you free on Monday? I remember you have an evening shift. Want to have dinner together?”
Shen Qingyu was startled, surprised that Cheng Che remembered his work schedule so clearly.
“Yes! See you on Monday!” Shen Qingyu raised his hand and waved at him.
Cheng Che copied his gesture and waved back, though because he was tall with long arms, the action looked a bit awkward.
The sensor light by the door suddenly went out, plunging Shen Qingyu into darkness.
Just as he was about to stomp his foot to trigger the light again, he heard Cheng Che take a deep breath.
In the next second, he was gently embraced by Cheng Che.
“Then I’ll go now, goodnight,” Cheng Che whispered in his ear.
